2017 Men s Mexico Mission Oaxaca - Chiapas November 11-26, 2017 This Mission consisted of 8 team members and team leaders from the congregation of Coquitlam Alliance Church to the south states of Mexico in Oaxaca & Chiapas. They worked together with Pastor Tomas Bencomo and Brenda Granados, President and Secretary of the Christian and Missionary Alliance in Mexico. They have served in this role for the past 3 years and give oversight to all the urban and rural churches in Mexico. Oaxaca and Chiapas are the poorest states in all of Mexico and the churches have struggled for many years. They have difficulty providing for the needs of their church buildings and the ability to pay salaries to their church pastors. Voice of Martyrs has reported that persecution of evangelicals occurs throughout this area and the people face prejudice, harassment, expulsion from their villages, attacks against their churches and private properties, threats of sexual assault, imprisonment and murder. Opposition to evangelicals derives mostly from their refusal to participate in syncretistic community religious events that involve pagan rituals and heavy drinking. Evangelicals are considered a threat to local political and religious leaders control. Tomas Bencomo had seen this occur and desires to encourage the churches and leaders through foreign assistance which includes financial donations and aid, theological teaching, evangelism, church planting strategies, goals and personal coaching. A plan is underway to help the people in this area with spiritual knowledge and understanding by spreading the good news of salvation. Much travel to urban churches and remote villages is underway to establish churches who will in turn reach out to their communities. As people gain spiritual understanding, receive small amounts of assistance and help, their lives are encouraged through Page 1
renewed hope and love. Because of poverty, many live with sadness and hopelessness. Coquitlam Alliance Church began to partner and help alongside Pastor Tomas in 2006 and has been involved with many projects over the years. This partnership has proved to be beneficial in helping CA Church follow its mandate to demonstrate and speak the gospel to the world by serving and giving their time, resources and finances not only to our community here in Canada but also to the world. The 2017 Project of the Men s Mexico Mission consisted of 4 major components. 1. Following up with the churches that have received support from CA Church in Tuxtla, El Progreso (Chiapas) and Juchitan (Oaxaca). 2. Giving assistance in building the foundations for the churches in Juchitan and El Progreso. 3. Visiting some areas near Juchitan that had been devastated by the Earthquake to bring relief of food and clothing supplies. (400 pounds of clothing & soup mix, 100 food hampers, 300 toys) 4. Offering a teaching conference for the Leaders/Pastors who live in the areas of La Ventosa & El Progreso. Early in the Mission, the team visited the Tuxtla Alliance Church where they were finishing up tiling the floor. Our donations enabled them to tile a floor that had only been cement for 20 years. They were thrilled and grateful to make these upgrades to their church. Page 2
Tuxtla Alliance Church Building the foundations at the Juchitan Alliance Church was hard work for our team, but they gave great efforts in digging holes, making rebar, making bricks by hand, and doing whatever was necessary to help the local workers complete their daily goals. The foundation was carefully constructed because of the risks of earth quakes in this zone. Page 3
In El Progreso the team worked in fog, rain and mud, however the climate was cooler and much easier to work in. Digging and rebar were the main themes of each day. Progress was made and the church leaders were very encouraged that foreigners (Canadians) were willing to come such a long distance to work with them and pray with them. El Progresso was definitely the poorest area we visited. Our donations of food, soup mix and clothing were given to Pastors to distribute to their suffering congregations. Page 4
To walk through the streets of Juchitan and Ixtaltepec was heart breaking. Devastation from the earthquake could be seen everywhere. People are still living in the streets as they are afraid to go into their homes. Tremors continue to plague the area and the uncertainty and safety of the buildings is a certain risk. The government has inspected throughout the cities and labeled condemned buildings and houses with numbers. The buildings are unusable and could collapse at any time. Page 5
The team gave out clothing, food, and toys on several occasions. It was an opportunity to share God s love and care over people who suffered through horrific devastation. Everything was received with gratitude and joy. Once again, knowing that visitors had come all the way from Canada to show love, care and offer assistance meant so much! Page 6
There were many opportunities for the team to teach, preach, share their testimony and their faith through church services, group meetings, a basketball game and local conferences. Every team member had the opportunity to share at some p o i n t a n d w a s g i v e n opportunities unique to their situation. Page 7
This mission provided so many unique opportunities to serve and help in an area that our church has not entered before. Great friendships and relationships were formed that will not be easily forgotten. It seems that God has opened up a new area for us become involved and share the love of Christ. It is another great step in building a strong relationship with our Mexican Global Partners and in doing our part to participate in the Great Commission; to spread God s love in the world, to minister God s grace by addressing spiritual, physical, and emotional needs, to serve the poor and to freely give as we have received. Thank you to a great, strong team who sacrificially served for the sake of others! Page 8
