G to 1999 We have all entered Royal Arch Masonry, some through curiosity, some for further knowledge of our Craft, some because they were coerced to do so. No matter how, we all accepted an invitation to join, and took an obligation to further the interests of the Chapter. Unfortunately there are too many who have lost sight of that aim and, as elsewhere in Masonry, came instead in search of vain glory and self gratification, and, not having found it, are unwilling to contribute time or effort to further the interests of the organisation to which they professed allegiance. We should be ever active in encouraging our Brethren and those new to Royal Arch Masonry to be inquisitive and research the secrets in which they have received instruction thus might the wisdom of the ancients who created our Order be appreciated. The Companions sitting in the columns are the principal support in Royal Arch Masonry and must be given every encouragement to remain by a continual reassessment of the Objects of the Order. Perhaps this little book will provide some inspiration to our members and so encourage them to show those same true hallmarks of a Royal Arch Mason, Fervency and Zeal, which have been so amply exhibited by our earlier Companions. 2 of 1919 to 1944 Introduction. Chartered 20th June 1919 Consecrated 13th September 1919 '' The history of Chryston district has been well chronicled with evidence of the various ages of man having been discovered throughout the district, and as part of the Bishopric of Glasgow it became a religious centre during the 1500's The earliest available population statistics for Chryston appear in the 1951 census returns giving a population of 1780 persons. We have no way of knowing how Chryston has grown as the census records do not contain figures for locations below 1000 of a population, and by 1991 the area had been absorbed into the larger Strathkelvin district. Being situated at the junction of roads from Glasgow in the west to Falkirk in the east. From the north through Kirkintilloch to Carlisle in the south it is only natural that it should become a meeting place for travellers to sojourn and pay their tolls before travelling on. Although some of these early travellers may have been Masons, of either an operative or speculative nature, Freemasonry did not begin to flourish in the Chryston district until the consecration of Lodge Cadder Argyle No 147 on 2nd February 1778 which was some 39 years before Royal Arch Masonry came into being in Scotland. Although there were a number of Craft Lodges in close proximity to Chryston it is not until 1919 that a Royal Arch Chapter is contemplated. One wonders if this was born out of frustration at the lack of opportunity for advancement through the Offices in other Chapters or was the travelling so time consuming that to sojourn nearer home became more attractive. -- Such a question may never be answered. The opening meetings of the founder members are fully recorded, in much detail. This together with original correspondence and balance sheets attached to appropriate minutes provide a valuable source of information on the development of the Chapter, and created difficulties in condensing to book form. All of the aforementioned documents have been returned to the appropriate place in the Minute Books. There will of course be errors to note, some glaring, some subtle. However poetic licence is claimed so that tolerance can be exhibited of the inadequacies of the human mind when flooded with an over abundance of detail. James F Denholm P.Z. No 454 August 2001 The Beginning. On Tuesday 22nd April 1919 the initial meeting to discuss the formation of a 'Local' Royal Arch Chapter was held within the Masonic Temple, Muirhead. Companions Archibald W Barr, Thomas A Thomson, George White, George Williamson, William Gilchrist, William Peat, Archibald Douglas and Thomas Duthie being present. Comps Williamson and Gilchrist being appointed Chairman and Secretary respectively. The above named were joined the following week by Comps Alex Gorrie, William Johnston and Francis Wilson and agreed to petition Provincial Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Lanarkshire Middle Ward for the formation of a new Chapter at Chryston. Comp. Gilchrist having prepared such a petition required the names of the various Office Bearers to be added. The Companions proposed and seconded to be the first Office Bearers of the new Chapter were: - Comp. William Gilchrist Z No 226 George Williamson H No 226 George White J No 226 Alex Gorrie Scribe E No 226 Thomas Duthie Scribe N No 79 Archibald Douglas Treasurer No 226 William Johnston 1st sojourner No 226 Archibald W Barr 2nd Sojourner No 226 Francis Wilson 3rd Sojourner No 226 William Peat Janitor No 226 Archibald Montgomery Sup of works No 226 Thomas H Thomson Capt 3rd Veil No 226 Thomas Smith Capt 2nd Veil No 69 Having established their Office Bearers it was agreed that the Chapter be called 'Chryston Royal Arch', and that the Founder Members should progress through the offices in rotation. Following on from these preliminary meetings there was a great deal of activity in obtaining or procuring the items of equipment and paraphernalia necessary to furnish and equip the Chapter. Frequent meetings are held throughout the summer months, and on 7th June Comp. Gilchrist reported the petition had been passed by Supreme Grand Committee, and they should now make preparations for the dedication ceremony. Various costs having been identified the Chairman remarked that if some one would lend them at say 4½% interest this would get them out of their difficulty. The necessary funds were quickly forthcoming with Comp. Douglas lending , and Comps Gorrie and Montgomery each. The Chairman thanked the Companions and instructed Comp. Douglas to draw up the necessary agreements with the lenders and handed over a receipt for 5-5-0( 5.25) being the fee payable for the Charter as his contribution to the Chapter. Orders to a total value of were placed with Hamilton and Inches (Edinburgh), for a full set of Regalia. Wm Bishop (Edinburgh) for a set of books, and 50 Working aprons and sashes from Vernons of Glasgow. On the 18th June Comp. Gilchrist tabled a letter, which is attached to a page Draft edit Draft edit 029 4

of the minute book, from P.G. Scribe E with instructions to prepare for the Dedication of the Chapter in August and that the Number would be 454. It was agreed to order 12 R.A. Cable Tows from Vernons (Glasgow) and Comp. White, who had not been present at the previous meeting, made available should it be required. Equipment and regalia was coming forward and with it the problem of storage, such a problem as we have today. Comp Wilson, who had provided the Arch Rods, was instructed to purchase a 'press', and to alter it as necessary to accommodate our equipment. The Founder Members received instruction in Royal Arch Ceremonial from M.E. Comps Richard Aitken and William Logan both PZ No 226, on Thursday 14th August. On the same night there was a letter from P.G. Scribe E giving the date for the Dedication as 24th August. This night was deemed not suitable and the request was made for either the 8th or 13th September. At a further instruction meeting on 21st August it was confirmed that the Dedication of the Chapter would take place on Saturday 13th September It was agreed that 150 programmes should be provided for the use of the Companions. Provincial Grand Chapter would arrange printing with the Chapter to pay cost. There must have been a degree of panic on Wednesday 3rd September when it was discovered that the Principals Aprons, Caps and Jewels had not been ordered. This was to be done with all haste. M.E. Comp. Aitken P.Z. No 226 not only offered the use of Old Monklands Regalia should our own not be forthcoming, but also to lay-out the Chapter for the dedication ceremony. Both offers were gladly accepted. Catering arrangements were confirmed and Companions were reminded that they must be clear in their Mother Chapter books. To facilitate this there was a special meeting of Old Monklands No 226 on Friday 12th September. The final meeting of the Founder members was held on 10th September when all arrangements were confirmed, with every effort being made to have the Principals regalia delivered on time. The Burning Bush and a supply of candles were handed over by Comp. Williamson who was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for the manner in which he had conducted the various meetings thus enabling the forming of the Chapter to be carried through so smoothly. Comp. Gilchrist hoped that the same could be said for the progress of the New Chapter. Consecration and Dedication. 3.30pm on Saturday 13th September 1919 saw nearly 100 Royal Arch Masons assembled within the Masonic Temple, Muirhead ready to receive the deputation from the Provincial Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Lanarkshire Middle Ward headed by M.E. Comp. Col. P Spence VD JP, Depute Grand Superintendent. The programme lists Grand Superintendent Sir Robert King Stewart KBE to carry out this duty but he was not in attendance. Chryston R A Chapter No 454 was then Constituted and Dedicated in due form with an oration on the theme 'Behold I have surely built thee an house to dwell in, a settled place for thee to abide for ever, thy name shall be there' being delivered by M.E. Comp. C.R. Larkman, P.G. Scribe E. The Office Bearers where then installed into they re respective offices with M.E. Comp. Spence accompanied by 21 Installed Principals conferring the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Chair degrees on Comp. William Gilchrist. 2nd and 3rd Chair degrees on Comp. George Williamson, and the 3rd Chair Degree on Comp. George White. Indicating that the Founder members were relatively 'young' Royal Arch Masons. The other Office bearers, as previously listed were then installed. M.E.Z. William Gilchrist in his address to the Companions expressed the thanks of the Founder Members for the help and assistance given by all present, in particular the Provincial Grand Chapter for their meritorious work and as a token of appreciation asked each member of the deputation to accept Honorary Membership of No 454. Which was duly conferred by M.E.Z. Gilchrist on: - M.E. Comp. Col. Peter Spence VD JP Depute Grand Superintendent Alex Gold P G H (act) Wm. Bryce While it can be seen that in one fell swoop the membership of the Chapter was doubled, it should be noted that neither Comps Wm. Bryce nor A S Hamilton have signed the sederunt book in any capacity. The Provincial Grand Chapter then retired. The Chapter was closed in full form and the Companions retired to high tea. The First Meeting. At a special meeting on 23rd September 1919 there were 27 Companions in attendance when applications for admission were read on behalf of 20 Brethren. 19 of whom were from Lodge Cadder Argyle No 147 and one from Lodge St Claire of Dalbeggie No 867. Stephen Dowell, Alexander Thomson Sen., Alexander Thomson Jr., Ivie Cooper, Lennox J Lauchlan, William Armstrong, Lawrence A Luke, James Marshall, Leonard Winkworth Robert Gray, Robert Barr, Charles B Henderson, Charles Henderson, William Richardson, William Williamson, James McDerman, James Murray, Hugh Beattie, James Muir, John Cormack No 867 The ballot for admission was by a show of hands and the ceremony of Affiliation to Mark degree, Excellent Masters Degree and Exaltation to the Holy Royal Arch degree were all carried through by M.E. Comp. Richard Aitken PZ Old Monklands Chapter No 226. From his involvement in the formation of the Chapter, and until his death was reported on 8th December 1931, Comp. Aitken was most regular in attendance being involved in ceremonial work and Installations. Draft edit Draft edit 029 6

The First Regular Meeting. The minute of this meeting held on Tuesday 14th October 1919 is a very lengthy one. There were 5 applications, all from Cadder Argyle No 147. Who were given their instruction by M.E. Comp. Aitken assisted by M.E. Comps Preston and William Logan all PZ No 226. As well as being the first name in the Petition Book Comp Stephen Dowell became the first initiate to be installed into office when he was nominated and elected to the office of Captain of the 1st Veil. He attained the Office of 2nd Principal in October 1938 and was re-elected in 1939, but did not continue to 1st Principal. His death was reported to the Chapter on 14th February 1948 Acknowledgement is made of the various financial and material donations, which enabled the Chapter to be consecrated. Some of these have already been listed but for the sake of regularity are as undernoted: - M.E. Comp. Archibald Douglas E. Comp. Alex Gorrie together with Decoration of Alter M.E. Comp. Archibald Montgomery M.E. Comp. William Gilchrist Charter Fee Comp. A W Barr Volume of the Sacred Law, Inscribed with Chapter name and number. Comp. F Wilson Alter and Rods Comp. G Williamson Burning Bush, candles and Brass Emblems for alter Comp. Thomas H Thomson Accumulator (to light alter) Comp. William Peat Square and Compasses Comp. Bishop (Cannongate Chapter No 56) Scroll of Sacred Law Comp. Thomas Duthie Bottle of old Port Comp. Wm. Johnston (amount not stated) M.E. Comp. George White Harmony refreshments Comp. Archibald Montgomery Loan of Organ Also welcomed to the meeting was Comp John Jamieson Chapter No 257, and the following accounts were passed for payment: - Wm. Bishop, Edinburgh ( 13.65) Alex Gillies, Muirhead ( 8.75) Smith and Mclean ( 6.61) It was felt necessary to include the early meetings in detail to ensure that the development of the Chapter is clearly shown and that the support given by others is appreciated. Chapter Records. The return of the Chapter Roll Book in 1994 makes complete the records of the Chapter records consist of - Five Minute Books from 22nd April 1919 to the present. Which contain various original documents. Among them the Programme for Constitution & Dedication, Inventory of Furniture etc., 14/12/43. Various balance sheets and letters are also included. All have been replaced by the writer. Committee Minute Book from 1985 to present. Four Sederunt Books 13th September 1919 to the present. Petition Book and of course the Roll Book. There are also two large Bibles - Wm. Collins circa 1860 and the Swan Memorial Bible. For the Side Degrees there is a separate Minute Book, Sederunt Book, and Roll Book for the Royal Ark Mariners and Cryptic Council. Also included is the Consecration and Dedication programme, Saturday 3rd September 1949, for these Degrees. To make these Chapter records complete we are grateful to M.E. Comp. Tom Wilson, P.G. Scribe E, who provided a photocopy of the original Petition for a Charter to hold a new Chapter. Signed by our Founder Members and by the members of the Provincial Deputation who attended the 75 th Rededication Celebrations.. Bye-laws. There are no copies available of the original Bye-Laws, which must have been a lengthy document with reference being made in 1934 of a proposed amendment to Bye-Law No 56. However when Provincial Grand Chapter formally approved the Chapter bye-laws there was an amendment to byelaw No 4 (Voting). One wonders if this was to do with the practice of deciding issues by show of hands? Shortly after the Bye-Laws were approved there was a discussion and debate on the method of ballot being used in the Chapter, involving M.E. Comp. Logan PZ No 226. E. Comp. Gorrie, Scribe E proposed that the Chapter should comply with the Supreme G.R.A. Constitution and Laws, and Chapter bye-laws and Vote by secret ballot, this proposal was seconded by Comp. Lennox Lauchlan. M.E.H. Henderson seconded by E. Comp. Dowell Capt. 1st Veil moved that votes be by show of Hands. The amendment was carried, by a show of hands. This matter should have been finally resolved when M.E.Z. Wm. Gilchrist announced that as our Bye-Laws had now been passed by Supreme Grand Chapter a secret ballot must be taken for all applicants for admission into the Chapter. This was not to be with continual reference to ballots being decided by show of hands for a considerable time to come, and is still a favoured form of voting today. The meeting on 11 th November 1919 closed with agreement to accept the suggestion of P.G. Scribe E that the Standing Committee should consist of The Three Principals, Scribe E, Treasurer and three Companions, not office bearers, from the body of the hall. It would appear to have been the intention to hold meetings each month however as early as 11th May 1920 a proposal to close the Chapter during June, July and August was placed before the Chapter. This was followed by an amendment to close during June and July only. While these were being discussed a counter motion that the Chapter remain open during these months was tabled. The original proposal was withdrawn, and following a vote the counter motion to stay open was carried. One wonders what prompted these proposals as there appear to be sufficient candidates coming forward to justify staying open. Again could it be low attendances due to holidays etc? At the meeting on 12th September 1922 E. Comp. Lawrence A Luke drew the Chapters attention the minute passed at the founders meeting on 29th April 1919 which read - 'It was agreed that the Founder Members should progress through Offices in rotation', and asked if that minute still held. After a discussion it was agreed on the motion of E. Comp. A Barr (Founder Member) seconded by Comp. Armstrong to rescind the minute. With the deaths being recorded of Comps Wm. Johnston Draft edit Draft edit 029 8

P.Z., Archibald Montgomery and Archibald Douglas there are 6 founder members still in office, and supporting their Chapter. On 12th June 1923 it was agreed to obtain permission of Provincial Grand Chapter to cancel July meeting. The letter giving this permission is attached to a page in the minute book. This was followed on 12th May 1925 with the proposal that Scribe E should obtain permission of 'District Grand Chapter' to amend the latter part of Bye-law No 18 to read '2nd Tuesday of May, June and July excepted. There is no evidence of this being ratified and meetings continued through May and June. Lean times indeed with poor attendances, apathy among the Office Bearers things were indeed becoming critical this prompted an application to extend the summer recess and on 14th August 1928 Scribe E was instructed to obtain dispensation to cancel August meeting. This was granted on 12th March A proposal by E. Comp. Luke, which had been rejected at an earlier meeting became a notice of motion in 'That the Chapter meet quarterly instead of monthly'. This was debated at length and the status quo was agreed. However a notice of motion to change the start time of meetings from 7.00 to 7.30 pm was agreed by one vote, and confirmed by Provincial Grand Chapter. Concern over the lack of support, and the impending hostilities, is such that on 12th September 1939 Scribe E was instructed to apply for permission to cancel the meetings of the Chapter for a period. At the A.G.M. on 10th September 1940 Scribe E reported that although dispensation to cancel meetings had been given, 6 meetings had been held, a similar dispensation had been received for next year. Membership. The meeting of 13th July 1920 was the first occasion when there were no Candidates. Until then there had been 53 candidates for exaltation of whom 48 were from Cadder Argyle No 147, with one each from Lodges Nos. 28, 199, 867, 963 and Of special interest are Bros. Robert Milligan and John A Gibson, both Cadder Argyle who, on separate occasions were advanced to the Honourable Rank of Mark Master before being Exalted to the Holy Royal Arch degree. There is a steady reduction in applications with the next nine years producing only 22 applicants with Cadder Argyle again having the major representation. The other Lodges being Nos. 114, 384, 544, 592, 683, 1067, and Their occupations being as varied as their names - Miners, Steelworkers, Builders and Hospital workers being predominant. Not withstanding the problems with attendances there was a special meeting on 4th October 1922 when Bro. George Jamieson, Medical Practitioner, Lodge Coltswood No 1067, and Bro. Charles Glen, Doctor, Lodge Cadder Argyle No 147 were Exalted to the Holy R.A.degree. Bro. William Chapman, The Athole Lodge No 384, exalted on 13th March 1928 was to be the last candidate until 10th January From 1933 until the end of 1944 Steelworkers have the largest representation followed by Mineworkers and Builders among the 27 Candidates. Lodge Cadder Argyle No 147 providing the largest number of applicants closely followed by Griffon Gartcosh No 1254 with Lodge Alloa No 69, No 544 and No 1230 having one each. Notable among these were Bro John Park Craig, MM of Lodge No 147 and IPM of No 1254 a founder member of that Lodge, and on 11th January 1944 there was an application from Bro. John Cameron, who is credited with membership of both No 147 and Affiliate Members. There were 8 affiliate members during this period. Most notable were Comp. John Jamieson, (Chapter St John No 257) admitted on 10 th February 1925 who not only took chair of First Principal, but also gave sterling service as Scribe E. He was followed as Scribe E by Comp. David J Bell, (Chapter Galloway No 269) admitted on 14 th March 1933 who also was First Principal of the Chapter. Complete list of affiliate members is given in Appendix D. Honourary Membership. The honouring of the complete Provincial deputation, at our dedication is followed, in 1920, with Honorary Memberships being conferred on M.E.Comps Richard Aitken, William Logan and Armour Hendry all P.Z. of Old Monkland R.A. Chapter No 226. Later that same year M.E.Comp Henderson 1st Principal No 226 was added to the roll. All of these Companions were warmly thanked for their help, assistance and guidance in raising the Chapter and also with the subsequent Degree Work. For similar reasons on 12th October 1943 M.E. Comps William Mair, Robert Adie and William Walker all PZ No 201 were also Honoured. M.E. Comp. John Stirling, Depute Grand Superintendent, was made an Honorary Member during the Provincial visitation on 8th November 1921, and at the next meeting the Treasurer announced a donation of 5/-(25p) from M.E.Comp. Stirling. A complete list of Honourary members is given in Appendix E. Ceremonial Work. Although other Chapters, No 26, 201, and 67 are represented throughout the years it is Old Monklands No 226, the 'Mother Chapter' which is the major influence in the development of Chryston Chapter. Indeed the Honorary Memberships conferred on the Companions from No 226 were well justified through their ongoing involvement. Joining in debates and discussions, and of course giving instruction in ceremonial work. This instruction is beginning to pay of. On 13th March 1920 the Affiliation to the Mark Degree being carried out by E. Comp. Archibald W Barr, 2nd Sojourner with E. Comp. Archibald Montgomery, Supdt. of Works conferring the Excellent Master Degree. This was indeed a landmark for the Chapter. However this glory was to be short lived with the activities of the Chryston Members being erratic the involvement of the Companions of No 226 continuing for some time into the future. As to day some meetings without Candidates are used for instruction on Ceremonial working, and on 13th December 1927 the first 'mock' degree was worked when M.E. Comp. A Gorrie acted as a candidate to allow the working of the R.A. Degree by the Companions. It was agreed that the excellence of the Degree work augured well for the future, and Scribe E was instructed to obtain additional copies of the ritual. The education of the Companions on various aspects of Freemasonry, and Royal Arch matters in particular was progressed with lectures being given and papers being read. M.E. Comp. John A Gibson IPZ gave a short address on the origins of the Mark Token, tracing it back through the ages and comparing it to various points of present day usage. On two occasions M.E. Comp. Richard Aitken PZ No 226 gave a most interesting extempore lecture on the preparation of a Candidate for the various R A Degrees and a discourse on the Signs and working of the R A degree. On another occasion a deputation from Cathedral R.A. Chapter No 67 was introduced and M.E. Comp. Raines Draft edit Draft edit

2nd Principal gave an excellent address on 'Freemasonry'. One far travelled visitor to the Chapter was M.E. Comp George Murphy PZ No 213, Provincial Grand Scribe E of the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Ontario, Canada, home on a visit after 15 years absence was welcomed on 13th August 1933 and gave a short lecture on Freemasonry in Canada with particular reference to the efforts in instruction as to the true ideals of Freemasonry. Comp. Murphy was to make a return visit in 1935 as Grand Superintendent of Ontario. On 10th April 1934 M.E.Comp Skiel 3rd Principal No 266, who later became one of our Installing Principals gave an interesting and instructive address on 'Masonry, its ideals and what it stands for', more especially R A Masonry. It would appear to have been the custom for the Installing Principals to be present throughout the opening and business part of the meeting until 13th October 1936 when it is recorded that the Installing Principals, M.E. Comps John Sneddon and Robert Addie PZ No 201, were admitted and offered the Emblem of Power and Authority. This was to be the second time these two Companions performed this duty, and the third consecutive year when Companions from No. 226 were not involved. The Installation meeting on 11th October 1938 had its share of problems with M.E. Comp. Logan PZ No 226 reporting that M.E. Comp. Skeil had taken ill and was unable to act as Installing Principal, however M.E. Comp. Mair and Addie PZ No 201 were willing to act in his stead. The Principals elect were presented to M.E. Comp Mair with M.E. Comp. Logan installing the office bearers. This is the first occasion that three Principals have been named as participating in the Installation ceremony. From the mid twenties the names of Comps Robert and Alex Barr occur most frequently, with Comp. Lennox Lauchlan, and E. Comp. Jack also being mentioned in relation to Ceremonial working and at the January 1925 meeting the Barr Brothers are involved in the Exaltation ceremonial. This was to be the second occasion when it is recorded that Companions of No 454 carried through the complete ceremony. Another landmark was achieved on 10th February 1925 when Comps George Rae No 89 and John Jamieson No 257 became the first affiliate members of the Chapter with the ceremony being carried out by E. Comp. Alex W Barr. At the meeting in December 1931 it was agreed that each Office Bearer should learn the ritual associated with his office in the E.M. Degree, and be prepared to carry it out at the next meeting. This is not recorded as having taken place. M.E. Comp. Robert Barr PZ is still active and in 1937 became the first PZ of No 454 to be recorded as carrying out any part of the installation ceremony when he installed E. Comp. Dowell, who had been absent from the installation meeting, into the Office of 1st Sojourner. Although there is an increased reference to deputations being admitted there are only occasional reports of Companions visiting Sister Chapters, with invitations to Old Monklands and Roman Fort installations being received annually. One notable deputation is on 10th January 1933 when, for the first time at Chryston, Provincial Grand Royal Arch Chapter headed by M.E. Comp. C.R. Larkman, Grand Superintendent, carried through the R.A. Exaltation. With the lectures held over until the next meeting. This carry over of the Lectures is a common occurrence with the Affiliation to the Mark, Excellent Masters and Royal Arch Ceremonial all being carried out at the one meeting the R.A. Lectures being held over 'due to pressure of time'. Regalia. Following the initial purchase, in 1919, there is no mention of regalia until 12th September 1944 when the absence of a PZ Jewel was discussed and there was agreement that particulars and design be got for our own Chapter. However with PZ Jewels not being available during the war it was agreed to take no further action at this time. Paraphernalia. The donations made to get the Chapter started are given in the note of the first regular meeting and were quickly followed by other necessary pieces of equipment. On 11 th November 1919 M.E. Comp. Wm. Logan PZ No 226 presented a set of two Royal Arch Jewels, and cases,as a token of best wishes from the 'Mother Chapter'. Further donations included a Collection Box from Comp. Alexander Thomson on 13 th January 1920 and on 10 th February that year Comp. William Peat presented the Square and Compass, beautifully engraved to lay on the Alter. On 9th March 1920 Comp. John Douglas of Maryhill Chapter No 296 presented a walking stick. At the same meeting Comp. Wilson presented a brass plate and circle to adorn the top of the Alter, which he had donated earlier and Comp. Dowell presenting four footstools for obligation purposes. On 8 th June 1920 M.E. Comp. G Williamson presented to the Chapter three small Mallets, and M.E. Comp. Armour Hendry PZ No 226 presented to the Chapter, 13 th February 1923, a book of drawings of Royal Arch Jewels. 13th January 1931 Comp. John Melville was thanked for the gift to the Chapter of a new attendance book and in April 1934 M.E. Comp. Gibson, on behalf of M.E. Comp. C.R. Larkman, Grand Superintendent presented copies of the passages from scripture used in the ceremony of exaltation. A copy of the inventory of paraphernalia taken after the meeting on 14th December 1943 is provided in the minute book and confirmed that the various donations made to the Chapter over the years were still in use and have a value of ( 96.72½p). Statistics. The first regular meeting attracted 47 Companions of whom 16 were from No 226. This was to be the largest attendance achieved by the Chapter during its first 10 years. There was a steady decline in attendances with the summer months of May June July and August being poorest. The number of meetings was reduced from 12 in the first 4 years to 8 meetings during With the average attendance being 18, the bulk of whom were 454 members. The support of Companions from Old Monklands No 226 is still acknowledged at this time. This pattern continued through the next ten years with the average attendance being 18 with 9 meetings each year. The outbreak of hostilities in 1939 reduced the number of meetings to 6 with, on occasion; barely enough Companions present to open the Chapter. Visitors are not to numerous with Office Bearers the only members in attendance. The Installation meetings attract the highest attendance as they do to day. Affixed to the minute of the meetings of 12th January 1926 and 8th March 1927 and reproduced in this book are the Provincial Statistical returns of the Chapters within the Province for 1925 and From these it can be seen that Chryston are not alone in their struggle for survival. Those Chapters, which enjoy low annual fees, have a high number of Exaltations together with the highest attendances. Chryston Chapter with the second highest Annual Fees of 3/-(15p), has the second lowest number of fee-paying members. The exaltation fee is not recorded however the affiliation 7/6(37½p) and Life Membership15/-(75p) fees are comparable with the other Chapters. The value of the Chryston paraphernalia is depreciated each year with the other Chapters holding theirs at what could be an insured value. A point raised by our auditor in The closing value of the General Fund is given as 2-8-2( 2.41) for 1925 and nil for 1926 with the Benevolent Fund rising Draft edit Draft edit

from ( 7.39) to ( 45.60). The number of Companions in each Provincial deputation to Chryston is 10 and 11 respectively which is below the average for the Province, and reduces in future years. There is recurring reference to the Chapter being adjourned to enable informal discussions to take place. One such occasion was on 8th November 1938 when a proposal was considered to celebrate the 21st Anniversary of the Chapter. No action was taken and the event passed unrecorded. Finance. When M.E. Comp. A A A Murray, Grand Scribe E informed the Chapter on 9th March 1920 that the Bye-Laws had been approved. Scribe E was instructed not to print the Bye-Laws until Supreme Grand Chapter had advised on the raising of the Exaltation fees, and on 13th April 1920 there is notification that the minimum Exaltation Fee had been raised from 2-2-0( 2.10p) to ( 3.15p). Although there is no indication of the Chapter Exaltation fee, the 200 copies of the byelaws agreed at the previous meeting would now be printed. A matter of constant concern to the Chapter is the outstanding loans made by the founding Companions such that on 12th September 1922 it is agreed that the General Fund should borrow from the Benevolent Fund at 3% interest. This would enable the General Fund to pay off one loan and part of another. These debts are still giving concern into 1925 when an appeal realised the sum of ( 4.75p) from 7 Companions. A further two appeals are made with every Companion being 'canvassed'. The result of these appeals were unsatisfactory and at the meeting on 10th October 1925 it was agreed that money to repay these debts be borrowed from the Benevolent Fund at a rate of interest. This was 'homologised' by the Companions present and the Treasurer reported he had on hand following payment of these debts. There is no indication as to the repayments, if any being made on the loans from the Benevolent Fund, and on 9th December 1930 the interest rate is reduced to ¼%. At the A.G.M. on 11th September 1923 E. Comp. Luke, Treasurer, appealed to the Companions present to encourage their fellow Companions to keep their test fees up to date. The Benevolent Fund collections were 1-5-2½( 1.26p) down on previous year, and the value of our assets were depressed by , and our Liabilities reduced by Following acceptance of the balance sheet, which had been printed at a cost of 1-6-6( 1.32½p), it was agreed that the Office Bearers clear the remaining ( 15.67½p) on loan at the earliest opportunity, and that we do not purchase any Provincial calendars next session the cost of which were ( 1.5p) for 100. The first recording of Life Membership Certificates being issued is on 10th November 1925 with the recipients being Comps Francis H Taylor, George Bryson, Tom Smith, Dr Charles Glen and Dr George Jamieson. While no cost is given a motion was tabled that the annual test fee will be 3/- (15p) and our life membership ( 1.50). This is the first time fees, of any kind have been reported in the minutes, and the first recording, in the minute book, of test fees being paid is on 14th April 1934 when E. Comp. Murray paid 3/-(15p). In August 1925 the financial distress of the Chapter resulted in a request to Lodge Cadder Argyle No 147 to forego hall rent for the past year. Any commission due to the Hall Keeper would be paid. The Lodge agreed to this request. Later Scribe E reported on an unofficial meeting with the Management Committee of Lodge Cadder Argyle No 147 re scheme for raising money. It was agreed that 20% was a fair proportion of the work and profits. At the same meeting the Treasurer reported that the proposed scheme had been unavoidably postponed! The financial deterioration continued into 1928 when it is agreed to ask life members to pay annual dues to assist with the financial position of the Chapter, and that the co-operation of Lodge Cadder Argyle be requested - to do what is not stated. However a vote of thanks is proposed to the Lodge on 12th January 1929 following a report that the hall rental is reduced to On 11th August 1931 it is agreed to pay instalment of 1-1-0( 1.05) to the Lodge for hall rent and that they be approached for a reduction in hall rent. However on 9th August 1932 it is agreed to pay 2-2-0( 2.10) for hall rental. On 11th December 1934 a notice of motion: - 'That the entire Annual Contribution of three shillings (15p) be devoted to the General Fund until such times as it may be deemed desirable to return to the status quo. In consequence the words 'Annual Contribution and' should be deleted from the first line of bye-law No 56. At the A.G.M. on 8th September 1936, which opened with M.E. Comp. Luke in the Chair and apologies from the three Principals, two of whom were in London on business, the Treasurer reported that the General Fund was out of debt with ( 12.69) in hand, and it was agreed to make a donation of 5-5-0( 5.25) to Lodge Cadder Argyle, and when Scribe E gave his report on 14th September 1937 the average attendance had been 19.6 compared to 23.3 (his figures not the writers) the previous year, and there had been two Exaltations compared to three last year. Part of the Janitors duties, at this time, was to entertain visiting Companions and Provincial Chapter in particular. On 14th December 1926 an account for 1-3-0( 1.15) for the purvey and hire of dishes for the Provincial visit was passed for payment, and it was agreed to add 5/-(25p) to pay Comp. McColl for his work in connection with this purvey. However on 11th January 1927, following the reading of the minute of the December meeting Comp. Luke lodged a protest at the expenditure of 1-8-0( 5.40) for purvey as detailed. He gave his reasons for his protest and asked that these be minuted - they are not. Following further discussion Comp. Luke tendered his resignation. This was not accepted by the Companions present. On 8th March 1927 Comp Luke made a statement withdrawing his resignation. To add to the financial and attendance worries the Installation on 9th October 1928 was to be the first occasion when a P.Z. was installed into a minor office and several Companions were laid aside with illness. All being wished a speedy recovery. From 1933 onwards a copy of the balance sheet is enclosed at the minute of the A.G.M. each year. This gives not only an insight into the finances of the Chapter, but also an indication of the appeals being made to the Companions. Previous to the A.G.M. on 10th September 1940 it was agreed not to print a balance sheet, as there was so little to enter, but that a short appeal to Companions to attend and support the Chapter be issued. The question of insurance, raised in 1936, but not mentioned since, is highlighted at the A.G.M. on 14th September 1943, when the auditors reported on the balance sheet, and commented on the low valuation of clothing and furnishings which must be a mistake as this value would be taken in the event of a fire - this was to be considered further and the balance sheet was adopted. The financial climate within the Chapter prevents external benevolence to be practised. This is evidenced during the 1920s when Scribe E is instructed to inform the Glasgow Royal Infirmary and Outdoor Association for the Blind that there are no funds available, and later by the ongoing reference to 'letting lie on the dais meantime' appeals from various organisations such as the Sick Children s Hospital. However in May 1937 the General Fund is reported as being in a healthy condition and a request from Chryston District Coronation Celebrations Committee was favourably Draft edit Draft edit

received with a donation of 2-2-0( 2.10) being made, and on 12th September 1944 it was agreed to make a donation of 1-1-0( 1.05) to Caledonian Royal Arch Chapter No 325 to help rebuild their Temple which had been destroyed by enemy action. Benevolence. With the Benevolent Fund receiving all collections, averaging 8/11(44½p), and half the annual contributions the Fund is very healthy. The only draw on the fund has been the two loans made to the General Fund in 1922 and 1925 and on 12 th May 1925 when a grant of was made to a widow of a Companion. Consideration for the plight of our own Companions is re-awakened in the 1930s when the active Companions recognise that these were indeed hard times and that some may be less fortunate than others it is agreed to provide Christmas gifts to needy Companions or relatives from the General Fund, and it is suggested that if any Companion knew of a Companion who was in straitened circumstances this should be brought to the attention of the Chapter. During this period only three grants, two of and one of were made. From February 1940 there is an increase in the amount of Benevolence being dispensed with regular applications to Provincial and Supreme Chapters on behalf of Companions in need, and E. Comp. John Jamieson, Scribe E, together with E. Comp. Lawrence A Luke, Treasurer, were authorised to act for the Chapter in any emergency which may occur before the next meeting. To strengthen the Benevolent Fund it is proposed by Comp. Luke on 8th December 1942 that all interest accruing to the General Fund should be credited to the Benevolent Fund. This was unanimously agreed but was to lead to complications later. Provincial Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Lanarkshire Middle Ward. At its constitution on 29 th April 1878 Provincial Chapter had as its subordinate Chapters Robert Burns No 143, Bothwell No 170, and Hamilton No 172. The Bye-laws, published in 1916, give the number of Chapters in the Middle Ward as eleven. New Monklands No 201, Old Monklands No 226, Clark Forrest No 236, Motherwell No 264 and Cam nethan No 321 having been added to the Roll. Chryston No 454, Consecrated 1919, brings the Roll to twelve. The first Provincial Visitation is on 9th December 1919 and a cup of tea is to be provided for the deputation, headed by M.E. Comp. Colonel Peter Spence, Depute Grand Superintendent. Following this it is regularly reported that on completion of the business of the visitation Provincial Grand Chapter retire and are entertained to tea, by the Janitor. The business of the Chapter continued with, on one occasion the Installation of Office Bearers absent from the Installation meeting, and again when M.E. Comp. Archie Barr First Principal gave a lecture on the signs. Previous to the Provincial visitation on 14th November 1922 it was the practice of the Provincial Deputation to sign the Minute Book in the margin of the AGM minute. On this occasion, and for all future meetings a special minute is inserted, before the Chapter minute, and signed by all members of the deputation as before. This continued until 10th September 1940 when a space is being left in the minute of the AGM to allow Provincial to sign at their visitation. Provincial Grand Chapter is fairly well pleased with the administration of the Chapter. Scribe E and Treasurer are congratulated on the manner in which the books are being kept. However on two occasions the Chapter came in for criticism. There were congratulations on the increase in exaltations, but criticism for not having a 'Mark Book'. The Chapter was instructed to purchase one immediately, with all members subscribing their marks therein (Were is this book now). The second occasion was for not having the petition book signed personally by each candidate at his exaltation. The Alter was draped with black cloth for the meeting of 14th September 1926 when M.E.Z. Alex Gorrie spoke in sympathetic terms on the recent death of M.E. Comp. Colonel Peter Spence V.D., J.P., Grand Superintendent. Nominations were requested for the office of Grand Superintendent. Lord Belhaven and Stenton is reported to have consented to accept the Office if nominated. With nomination forms completed and sent on to Supreme Chapter it was learned that Lord Belhaven had taken ill, cancelled all engagements and was wintering abroad. This caused consternation with a special meeting of all First Principals in the Province unanimously agreeing to recommend M.E. Comp. John Stirling, Depute Grand Superintendent, who reluctantly agreed, and the Chapter supported his appointment. The newly installed Grand Superintendent headed the Provincial Deputation on 8th November Which was his only visit to Chryston before his sudden resignation in March The first occasion that a Provincial Office Bearer is recorded as attending an Installation at Chryston is on11th October 1921 when M.E. Comp. C R Larkman, P G Scribe E was present, and on 9th October 1934 M.E. Comp. Larkman, Grand Superintendent, addressed the Chapter at the end of the Ceremonial. This was to be his last visit before retiring from office. His death was intimated on 10th November 1936 with the announcement that there should be a period of two months mourning. M.E. Comp. David W Brown, Grand Superintendent, headed every official deputation to Chryston even when on 14th December 1937 a snow storm cut short the visitation, but not before Grand Superintendent had given a good report on the working of the Chapter. On 13th April 1943 M.E. Comp. Luke reported on his attendance at Supreme Grand Chapter, and suggested that a letter of congratulations be sent to M.E. Comp. Brown on his appointment as Grand Treasurer, and on 8th August 1944 four copies of the proceedings of Supreme Grand R A Chapter were received which recorded the exaltation into Royal Arch Masonry of the first Most Worshipful Grand Master Mason, while in office, by M.E. Comp. David W Brown, 3rd Grand Principal elect, and Grand Superintendent of Lanarkshire Middle Ward. With the lack of information available to Provincial Grand Chapter it is difficult to confirm what involvement, if any, the Chapter has with its parent body. Tickets for the Vernal Equinox being returned often as not 'as there are no suitable trains to Motherwell'. However four Companions did attend a festival in Coatbridge, and at the Provincial visit on 8th November 1932 the sederunt book was signed by M.E. Comps George White as 2 nd Sojourner, Alex Gorrie as 3 rd Sojourner and George Williamson as Sword Bearer. Later, as part of the deputation of Provincial Office bearers, led by M.E. Comp. Larkman, Grand Superintendent, to confer the R.A. Degree at Chryston on 10 th January 1932 M.E. Comp. Gorrie signed as 3 rd Sojourner. A request for a donation to a presentation to M.E. Comp. Turner, P G Treasurer, was read on 9th August 1932 and it was moved by M.E. Comp. Luke seconded by Comp. D Buchanan that it is left to the individual members to make a contribution. The resultant collection amounted to 7/-(35p). Following the nomination, 11th April 1944, of M.E. Comp. Robert S Anderson as Grand Draft edit Draft edit

Superintendent it was agreed that a donation of 4-4-0( 4.20) be made to the testimonial for M.E. Comp. Brown. There was an addition to the Roll in 1938 with the Consecration of Rhinsdale Chapter No 690. Supreme Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Scotland. To ensure that the Principals were aware of the rules of the Order they were issued with copies of the Constitution and Laws of Supreme Chapter and the Royal Arch Ritual. With copies of the ritual only to Scribe E and the three Sojourners. All of which had to be returned to Scribe E on any Office Bearer vacating office. It is recorded that this was faithfully carried out in earlier years. Did Scribe E already have a copy of the Constitution and Laws, or was he to be guided by the Principals - I wonder. Included with the minute of 13th January 1920 is a letter from Supreme Chapter requesting that the full names of candidates be given on all returns, which should be made immediately following each meeting together with the correct remittance. As the Auditors are very cross about this not always being attended to. At the same meeting notification was received that M.E. Comp. Sir Robert King Stewart was resigning as Grand Superintendent and requesting the Chapter to make a nomination for his successor. Later in the same minute is a report by M.E. Comp. Williamson, who had been present at Supreme Grand Chapter when M.E. Comp. Colonel Peter Spence V.D., J.P., had been elected Grand Superintendent of Lanarkshire Middle Ward. On two occasions in 1921 it is recorded that Supreme Chapter has written to each Chapter instructing the First Principal to question direct each Companion as to their involvement with 'The Supreme Encampment' or 'The Royal Order of Scotland' or 'The Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite'. It would appear that these bodies were considered spurious and purporting to work degrees similar to bodies in amity with Supreme Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Scotland. Any Companions associating themselves with these spurious bodies must consider themselves suspended from Royal Arch Masonry until they surrender their spurious diplomas and take the Royal Arch obligation again. There is no record in the minute book of this dictate being withdrawn. However following the reaffirming of amity with Grand Lodge of Scotland on 3 rd June 1921,and the subsequent recognition of these spurious bodies by Grand Lodge there must now be concordat between them and Supreme Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Scotland. That the Chapter was maintaining itself clear with Supreme Chapter is indicated by receipts for annual dues etc being regularly recorded and Scribe E is instructed to protest to Supreme Chapter at the short times being allowed to consider the draft Constitution and Laws, with particular reference to the increase in life membership fees and to claim for delay? Various Principals reported on their attendance at Quarterly Convocations. These reports were appreciated by all present, but the Principals did not appear to be greatly impressed with Supreme Grand Chapter as on most occasions it was reported that there was nothing very important transacted. Principals. The information available on the early First Principals is very sketchy, and is obtained entirely from the minute books from where it can be determined that each Principal attempted to stamped his own personality on his year in office, with some becoming more involved in the development of the Chapter than others. The Roll Book highlights the input and influence, which Lodge Cadder Argyle has on the membership of the Chapter. William Gilchrist, the founder First Principal, figured prominently in the formative meetings of the Chapter. His business commitments would appear to necessitate him being away for long periods, which would account for his infrequent appearances at meetings during his tenure of office. At the July meeting he apologised for his absence from the previous meeting 'as he was now residing some distance so far removed from the Chapter'. There is no record of his having attended the Chapter on completion of his term as First Principal. However it is recorded that following an appeal for financial assistance in 1925 there is a cheque, value 1-1-0( 1.05) from Companion Gilchrist. Tuesday 12th October 1920 saw the first Installation meeting which was opened with a tinge of sadness when it was reported that Comps A Barr and R Barr were absent due to the death of their father so soon after the death of their Mother. M.E. Comp. Richard Aitken PZ No 226 installed the three Principals, and M.E. Comp. Henderson Z No 226 installing the Office Bearers. This was to be the first of many Installations, which these two stalwarts of No 226 were to carry out together. At the close of the Chapter refreshments were served to the Companions 'when a very enjoyable evening was spent with song and sentiment'. Comp. Williamson, whose death was intimated on 10 th September 1949, occupied the office of Janitor and is also recorded as being Provincial Grand 3 rd Sojourner in 1930 with no record of any further involvement. Comp. George White was one of the few members who were ever present and this was continued during and following his Installation as First Principal. The death is reported, on 10 th January 1922, of Comp. Archibald Montgomery, a Founder Member. Comp. White was re-elected to First Principal on 11th December 1929 following the sudden resignation of M.E. Comp. Robert Barr. On this occasion there is recorded the acknowledgement of a donation from M.E.Comp. George White being the proceeds from the Installation Harmony, the cost of which he had defrayed himself. His death was reported to the Chapter on 11th January The fourth Founder member to take the Chair was Comp. William Johnston who presided over the Chapter with quiet dignity before handing over in 1923 to Comp. Thomas H Thomson, another active Founder member who, with no reason being given, carried on for a second term as First Principal. Comp. Thomson served in various offices, including treasurer. His death was reported to the Chapter on 13th October Comp. Alexander Gorrie, our first Scribe E, was a very active member taking various offices before being installed in In 1930 Comp. Gorrie signed the Minute at a Provincial visitation as P.G. 1 st Sojourner. His death, together with that of Comp. Francis Wilson, a Founder Member, was reported to the Chapter on 13 th February The death is reported of another Founder Member, Comp. Archibald Douglas, at the April meeting Comp. Archibald W Barr, his death was reported on 8 th February 1947, was regularly involved in Ceremonial work and together with his Brother Robert carried out various degrees. Comp. Archie also performed the first Affiliation ceremony in 1925, and shortly after his installation as 2nd Principal there appears to have been some unrest with his resignation being tendered. However following an 'interview' with M.E. Comp. Gorrie, First Principal, the matter was resolved. Comp. Robert Barr, having been Exalted on 23rd September 1919 was to be the first initiate installed as First Principal, and the third Companion to be re-installed for a second term of office. His prowess as a ceremonial worker has already been highlighted. His second term of office was terminated rather abruptly on 12th Draft edit Draft edit
