015 Book of Mormon Class by Mike Stroud Transcribed by Patrick Crisp Today is 1 Nephi 21. Great chapter here, look at the heading, The Messiah will be a light to the Gentiles and will free the prisoners Israel will be gathered with power in the last days Kings will be their nursing fathers Compare Isaiah 49. Let's start right in verse 1 And again: Hearken, O ye house of Israel, all ye that are broken off and are driven out because of the wickedness of the pastors of my people; yea, all ye that are broken off, that are scattered abroad, who are of my people, O house of Israel. Listen, O isles, unto me, and hearken ye people from far; the Lord hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. This is the scattering of Israel. The people have apostatized. The leaders are wicked and when the wicked lead, the people mourn. Lehi is interested in this section of the brass plates because it is talking about his little group. Now, who is the me and my there? He is talking about the house of Israel. So, whenever you see that the Messiah will be light unto the Gentiles, up at the top, the very first thing, Hearken O ye house of Israel. So, everything in vs. 1 is talking about the house of Israel as a nation and as individuals. When it says, the Lord hath called me from the womb, that means that the house of Israel was foreordained and set up before the pre-mortal life. There was a house of Israel before the earth was formed and before the first children were born into it. From the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. That is the calling and foreordination of the house of Israel from a pre-mortal life as far as their destiny, assignments, and ministry to mortals in the fallen world. Look at this: 2 And he hath made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me, and made me a polished shaft; in his quiver hath he hid me; That little hiding there is an interesting statement because, if you go to D&C 86 you will see another section about being hidden in the Lord. Let's take a look at that because it has application here. Section 86 has to do with the parable of the wheat and the tares, the first 7 verses. Verses 8 and 11 are priesthood blessings to those who are lawful heirs according to the flesh. We are talking priesthood blessings. We are not talking about ordination to the priesthood. We are talking about the fullness of the priesthood. So, all of the blessings that accompany what is called the 'fullness of the Melchizedek Priesthood' is what we're talking about here. Let's go to verse 8. Verse 7 ends the modern interpretation of the parable of the wheat and the tares. 8 Therefore, thus saith the Lord unto you, with whom the priesthood hath continued through the lineage of your fathers. The word Therefore refers back to the previous 7 verses. These next verses have a direct reference to what was spoken there. Look at verse 7: Therefore, let the wheat and the tares grow together until the harvest is fully ripe; then ye shall first gather out the wheat from among the tares, and after the gathering of the wheat, behold and lo, the tares are bound in bundles, and the field remaineth to be burned. There is a sifting and that is happening right now. It is happening world wide, but it is also happening in the church. There is a great sifting that is taking place in the church and I think that the gay and lesbian movement is one of the great sifting processes that's taking place. The burning of the field is the Second Coming. Now, we have a separation going on of the wheat and the tares. Remember that a tare is a plant that greatly resembles wheat. When it is young, it comes up and you really can't tell the difference until they are fully mature and they grow this stalk on that. What he's talking about is, because of what's coming, because of the sifting, because they are bundled together and ready to be burned, Therefore, thus saith the Lord unto you, with whom the priesthood hath continued through the lineage of your fathers. That's us. It refers exactly back to 1 Nephi 21:1 when it talks about, the Lord hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. That means we are foreordained as the house of Israel and have the right to certain priesthood blessings, certain blessings of the temple, blessings of the Second Comforter, and the blessings of calling and election. All of those rights and privileges belong to those who are legal heirs of the Melchizedek Priesthood. Those legal heirs are found within the house of Israel. Now, in 1 Nephi 21:2 he says...in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me. Go back over to D&C 86:9 For ye are lawful heirs, according to the flesh, and have been hid from the world with Christ in God These people here, who are lawful heirs, means they have a right to all of the higher blessings of the Melchizedek Priesthood and are hid from the world with Christ in God. Look over at 1 Nephi 21:2 and it says, In the shadow of his hand he hath hid me, and made me a polished shaft; in his quiver hath he hid me;. Let's come back to D&C 86:9... have been hid from the world with Christ in God. Joseph Smith interpreted that to mean that your calling and election has been made sure. Without the Prophet Josephs' statement on that, we have this little statement that he gave to William Clayton. William Clayton was the scribe to the Prophet Joseph Smith and his body guard. He's the man that wrote Come, Come Ye Saints when they were coming across the plains. Now listen to what he said, Your life is hid with Christ in God and so are many others. Nothing but the unpardonable sin can prevent you from inheriting eternal life, for ye are sealed up by the power of the priesthood unto eternal life having taken the steps necessary for that purpose. That's in the History of the Church. Vol. 5 page 391. So, when it says in verse 9: For ye are lawful heirs, according to the flesh, and have been hid from the world with Christ in God 10 Therefore your life and the priesthood have remained, and must needs remain through you and your lineage until the restoration of all things spoken by the mouths of all the holy prophets since the world began.

What we have over here in 1 Nephi 21:2 is a promise that the house of Israel, because of their foreordained status in verse 1, they have access to all of the priesthood blessings of the Melchizedek Priesthood, because of promises made to their ancient fathers. Those of us that hold the Melchizedek Priesthood, all we need to do now is understand these things and have faith, obedience, and submission and go up and claim these great blessings which are ours. I think about a statement that the Lord makes in the topical guide in the Bible Dictionary under prayer. It comes out and says, 'the Lord is already willing to give you all of these blessings and in other places, anxious to give them to you'. However, the receiving of these blessings are conditioned on you asking. So, the blessings that he already has reserved for us and anxious to give you, he cannot, if you never ask. Hence, the importance of ask and ye shall receive, seek me and ye shall find me, knock and it shall be opened. Let's go to verse 5: And now, saith the Lord that formed me from the womb that I should be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him though Israel be not gathered, yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the Lord, and my God shall be my strength. You have to look closely and see who's speaking. Now, we are going to be talking about the Messiah, the coming of Jesus Christ. Jacob is the house of Israel. Remember that at this point, the house of Israel is in a scattered state. So, what we are talking about is the gathering of Israel in the latter-days. Now the Lord up above would be the Father that formed Jesus from the womb, that he should be his servant to gather Israel again to him. That is what we call a Messianic prophesy. That right there is talking about the mission of the Messiah to restore priesthood power in the last days, to restore knowledge, to have temples to be built, so the house of Israel can be gathered one last time and brought to temples so they can receive the full knowledge of the Lord. So, at the margin, I put the Father and drew a little arrow up to verse 5 where it says the Lord. I have identified that as the Father. The me, as for me, I ran a little arrow over to the Messiah in the Chapter 21 heading, The Messiah will be a light to the Gentiles. You will see that this is a correct interpretation as we go on. These verses, 5 and 6 and 7, are talking about a relationship between the Father and the Son as it pertains to the gathering of Israel. The purpose that the Lord formed the Messiah, was to bring Jacob, that means to gather scattered Israel. Another name for Jacob is Israel. To 'bring him' means 'to gather him from his fallen state'. In verse 1 it talks about scattered and in verse 5 we are talking about gathering. Let's go down and see if it fits into verse 6: And he said: It is a light thing that thou shouldst be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel. I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the ends of the earth. Look back over to the chapter heading and 'the Messiah shall be a light unto the gentiles'. You see who we are talking about now? You need to take the time and identify who is speaking, and if you understand. Look at verse 6: he said (the Father),... thou shalt be my servant (the Messiah), to gather Jacob. The gathering of Israel takes place because of Christ's Atonement. Without Christ's atonement, there is no gathering of Israel. There would be no need for dispensing priesthood keys and dispensations if the atonement hadn't happened. So, Jesus is the first great cause of the gathering of Israel. Everything else: prophets, prophesies, and priesthood keys, take place under his direction. So, Jesus is to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the preserved Israel. I (the Father) will give thee (the Messiah) for a light unto the gentiles. That thou (the Son) mayest be my (the Father) salvation unto the ends of the earth. See how that works? If you learn Isaiah and catch that, it starts to make sense. 7 Thus saith the Lord the redeemer of Israel, His Holy One. To him whom man despiseth, to him whom the nations abhorreth, to servant of rulers: Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of the Lord that is faithful. You see we are on the right track. Who is the Lord, the redeemer of Israel? Christ, who is the His Holy One, the Father's Holy One. All through the history of the Saviors ministry it is looked upon as nothing. He was considered as naught. He had no authority, even though genealogically he was a rightful heir to the Kingdom of David. In a time when theocracy ruled, He had a right to be the King of the Jews. They knew that, because they knew his genealogy. They were great genealogy keepers. At the time of his ministry Jesus was considered nothing. However, what verse 7 is saying is that as he was considered nothing in an earlier day, in a later day kings shall arise, princes shall worship because the Lord that is faithful. That's all going to turn around. So, now we are looking down through the time of the millennial day. 8 Thus saith the Lord: In an acceptable time have I heard thee, O isles of the sea, and in a day of salvation have I helped thee; and I will preserve thee, and give thee my servant for a covenant of the people, to establish the earth, to cause to inherit the desolate heritages; This is the Savior speaking. The dispensation in the fullness of times is the great dispensation of the gathering of scattered Israel. Scattered Israel began to be scattered as early as 721 B.C. when the Assyrians took away the 10 tribes into the northern kingdom. Then, in 586 B.C., the Babylonians came down and destroyed Jerusalem and scattered the Jews. They were gathered 7 years later, and then they were scattered in 70 A.D. Finally came the great Diaspora by the Romans and they remained in that total scattered and lost state until the state of Israel was formed in May of For the first time in 2000 years, Jews had a national homeland and began to gather to their ancient land of inheritance. That all takes place in the dispensation of the fullness of times. So, the Lord said, in an acceptable time. Who do you think the servant was that restored the covenant relationship in the last days in the dispensation of the fullness of times? Who was the great prophet, seer, and revelator? It was Joseph Smith. I will give thee my servant for a covenant of the people, to establish the earth, to cause to inherit

the desolate heritages; 9 That thou mayest say to the prisoners: Go forth; to them that sit in darkness: Show yourselves. They shall feed in the ways, and their pastures shall be in all high places. The prisoners are in the spirit world. What did Joseph Smith do? For thousands of years we would have people die and go to hell and are captured in hell and can't escape. So, the Savior goes in and he organizes his ministry there and sends messengers from paradise into hell so that they can be taught. But, can they be redeemed? Who was it that restored the keys to redeem the prisoners and bring them forth from their cells? Joseph Smith again! (repeats verse 9) That's because of gospel covenants and temple ordinances restored to Joseph Smith under the hand of the Messiah in the acceptable day of the Lord, which is the dispensation of the fullness of times. That's Isaiah. Can you see that without latter-day knowledge, without the restoration, that Isaiah is nigh unto impossible to understand. Can you see that when Isaiah comes down through all of the translations of the Bible, that of all of the Old Testament in the Bible, his is the one that remains the least unadulterated. Student comment on how the Bible got changed over time (different translations, different interpretations, etc.). Mike: If you don't understand the scattering and gathering of Israel, you can't even hope to understand the first ten verses of this chapter (1 Nephi 21). Which, by the way, is Isaiah 49 in the Bible. They don't understand 'Spirit World'. How could you understand verse 9 without President Smith's vision of the redemption of the dead? And without the D&C sections on keys of temple work? How could you even do it? You couldn't! So, it remains a great mystery and the best they could do was the philosophies of men mingled with scripture. How blessed we are. There has never been a time and never will be a time or a people that will understand Isaiah better than the Latter-day Saints. Except these guys: Lehi and his people. They understood Isaiah. How did they understand Isaiah? They understood the manner of prophesying among the Jews. He's only a hundred years removed from them. But more important than that, these men had the spirit of prophesy, revelation, visions and angels. They were able to see into our day and understand what Isaiah is talking about in the last days, because they saw the last days. Student comment about seers, that they could actually understand the intent of the writer. Mike: That is why the last word in Jacob 7, when Jacob ends his great discourse, the last words that Mormon put in there to close that up, Brethren adieu. Well, Jacob didn't speak French and neither did Mormon, but the seer put that word in there to best convey the message that they were trying to give. More than just 'see you later', 'goodbye', 'farewell', adieu carries with it a different feeling. That is exactly what you are talking about there. The anti-mormons use that to show that the Book of Mormon is false. Joseph Smith didn't know French and Mormon certainly didn't speak French. Adieu is French, but they miss the whole deal. Let's go down to verse 10: They shall not hunger nor thirst, neither shall the heat nor the sun smite them; for he that hath mercy on them shall lead them, even by the springs of water shall he guide them. This is about the prisoners in verse 9 that go forth, that sit in darkness. These can have multiple layers. This can also be speaking about mortals who are coming from a lost condition. For example, the 10 lost tribes who are in a body somewhere in the north. I personally believe they are on a piece of this earth that was removed and taken off into space. The prophet Joseph Smith has said in journal entries that large pieces of this earth have been taken away and that the earth, before these pieces where taken away, was many times larger than its present condition. So, verse 10 could not only be talking symbolically about spirits being freed from the spirit world, but it could also be speaking about mortals who are in an ungathered, lost condition when they are restored to their physical lands of inheritance and to the knowledge of their true redeemer. Look at this, shall lead them, even by the springs of water shall he guide them. Look at vs. 11: And I will make all my mountains a way, and my highways shall be exalted. When the 10 lost tribes were led away into the north country it says that there was a highway prepared by the Lord, that they traveled on this road. That when they returned, they would travel on that road, which is not presently exposed, or available, and it will also be returned with them. So, they can return on the same highway that they left on. Now look at verse 12. We are talking about people who are coming, people who are being restored, etc. We're talking about the gathering. And then, O house of Israel, behold, these shall come from far; and lo, these from the north and from the west; and these from the land of Sinim. He's talking about some people who are going to come from a far distance away and be gathered home, spiritually and physically. He talks about three groups, from the north and the west. These from the north, I believe, have reference to the ten lost tribes that were in a single body. There are two different groups of the 10 lost tribes of Israel. One group maintained a single body and were carried off and reserved by the Lord and they maintain that identity to this day' and when they return' they will return with a chunk of the earth and they'll number in the millions of people. Then there's another group that was originally a part of that group. They went north, but they intermarried with the peoples along the way. They become the tribes of Israel whose blood is scattered in Western Europe among the gentiles. I believe that's those from the west. So, we have the tribes of Israel that were scattered among the gentiles of Europe, which is where most of the ancestry of the church comes from, western Europe. This is traditionally looked upon as the great lands of the Gentiles. America is called the great Gentile nation because most of the people who originally came there came from the original western European lands of the Gentiles, where these people actually settled. Now you've got two groups. Those from the north who are coming, the ten lost tribes and then you've got those from the west who intermarried and become the ancestry of the members of the church today, from

Ephraim and Manassa who track their ancestry to western Europe. These from the land of Sinim is a very interesting thing. Sinim, in most references today, refers to China. The date that this prophesy was given, when Isaiah spoke these words, China was still 200 years from the first dynasty that actually established China as a nation. So, what we feel here, is that Isaiah is having reference to this great third group. It's interesting that in our day, the Chinese population make up about a third of the world population. They are up to about 2 to 2 ½ billion people. Now look at verse 13: Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; for the feet of those who are in the east shall be established; and break forth into singing, O mountains; for they shall be smitten no more; for the Lord hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted. Those in the east are China. What does the Lord do when he establishes? We have a movement now called 'establishing the church'. How do you establish the church? Student: Temples, stakes, wards, etc. Mike: if we are talking about future prophecy, what can we expect in China before the second coming of the Messiah? Stakes, wards, temples, and establishment of the church. The church will be established among the population as roughly a third of the membership of the church. Speaking of India, notice the first stake in India was formed here just last month. O mountains, what are we talking about there? Mountains are always temples. Who will be smitten no more? We are talking about the people in the East. Have the Chinese people had a history of being smitten in any way? To this day they are not a free society. 14 But, behold, Zion hath said: The Lord hath forsaken me, and my Lord hath forgotten me but he will show that he hath not. Zion has reference to the New Jerusalem. We are back in America now. When you talk about Zion, you have to come back to the establishment of the church in the United States and it's future destiny as the world ruling capitol, where Christ will live with His people during the Millennium. So, they are feeling forsaken right now. It's been 170 years since Joseph Smith and his brethren tried to establish the New Jerusalem. They laid the cornerstones in Jackson County, Independence, Missouri but then were forced out. For 170 years, Zion, as a physical place, hasn't had any chance of being built. They tried a few experiments in Utah called The United Order and the Order of Enoch and so on, but it never was designed to be the future Zion place. Look at what the Lord says about this. Look at verse 15 The people who want Zion are saying that the Lord has forgotten us, we missed our opportunity, there's no chance. 15 For can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee, O house of Israel. Verse 16 is significant: Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me. Now think about that great atonement symbol. If Zion is established, and it will be, and has to be, before the second coming, it will only be established by a people who have come up to a position of sanctification because of the atoning blessings of the sacrifice of the Savior, and have made those covenants. You think about the signs and tokens, especially those of the Melchizedek Priesthood that have to do with the hands. In one place, when you are engraven upon the palms of my hands, think about the signs, about a nail going through the palms. Any thoughts on the walls? Temple walls? What do you think? 17 Thy children shall make haste against thy destroyers; and they that made thee waste shall go forth of thee. Now think about the time when the New Jerusalem is finally being built. It will be at a time when the whole world is engulfed in warfare and wickedness tries on every hand to destroy righteousness. Thy Children, those who are foreordained to be members of this Zion society, will have to make haste against the destroyers. When they come, they are going to be chased. You look at Enoch's Zion and you'll see that they had to fight for their lives. They finally escaped to a safe place that was protected by God, and their enemies stood afar off and wouldn't go there because fire from heaven would consume them. So, when it comes to the final Zion of the latter-days, those that come there are going to be coming quickly and fleeing from those that want to take their lives. and they that made thee waste shall go forth of thee, meaning your enemies are going to end up being prey. You'll see the interpretation of all this. Here's the neat thing, because in the 22 nd chapter of 1 st Nephi, Nephi interprets all this. If you're wondering how I am able to interpret this, a lot of it comes because Nephi gives his inspired interpretation after he quotes this verse: 18 Lift up thine eyes round about and behold; all these gather themselves together, and they shall come to thee. And as I live, saith the Lord, thou shalt surely clothe thee with them all, as with an ornament, and bind them on even as a bride. What's the purpose of the gathering? To go to the temple. What do you do in the temple? It's garments and temple robes. The celestial room is referred to as the 'bridal chamber'. In the bridal chamber, who is the bridegroom? Who is the bridegroom in the ultimate symbol? Jesus Christ. Who is the bride? We are! Those who have the garment on and are qualified with a recommend to enter. So, the bride entering in with the bridegroom represents the Second Comforter experience. So what is the celestial room representative of? The Second Comforter. When you, the bride, enter into the presence of the bridegroom you become one with him. It is more than a man and a woman symbolism, its a bride and a bridegroom. That's why the Lord refers to himself as the bridegroom. 19 For thy waste and thy desolate places, and the land of thy destruction, shall even now be too narrow by reason of the inhabitants; and they that swallowed thee up shall be far away. You are going to escape where you were. There is not room for you and them. If you stay there, you are going to be destroyed. It's where Joseph Smith says, all that will not take up the sword, must flee to Zion. For only in Zion within her walls is safety. 20 The children whom thou shalt have, after thou hast lost the first, shall again in thine ears say: The place is

too strait for me; give place to me that I may dwell. The first talks about the whole generations of the house of Israel that were in an apostate state, in their lost and fallen state. Places to dwell are temple lands of inheritance, freedom of making covenants. 21 Then shalt thou say in thine heart: Who hath begotten me these, seeing I have lost my children, and am desolate, a captive, and removing to and fro? And who hath brought up these? Behold, I was left alone; these, where have they been? All of a sudden, the house of Israel is looking at a whole new generation of righteous children who are coming up through temple covenants. You look at them and say, where did these come from? The house of Israel has been lost and scattered, apostatized for so long. Look at this: Kings and queens have come up to build a New Jerusalem receiving the comfort of the covenants of the temple. And who hath brought up these? These are those who have gathered. Here is Israel symbolically saying, I have been lost for so long, I have lost my first children, generations have come and gone into the spirit world in apostasy because of the wickedness of the pastors. Now, symbolically, Israel is, where did these come from? I lost my first children, where did these newly gathered ones who make covenants and hold priesthood and are hid from Christ and God. When did this all happen? Behold, I was left alone; these, where have they been? You are going to see this great miracle in the gathering of Israel where something that was desolate and lost and unfruitful now becomes the fruit, the joy, and the power of the world. 22 Thus saith the Lord God: Behold, I will lift up mine hand to the Gentiles, and set up my standard to the people; and they shall bring thy sons in their arms, and thy daughters shall be carried upon their shoulders. This is the restoration of the gospel. The standard is also called an Ensign. The magazine is called the Ensign and it has reference here. Isaiah calls it an Ensign in another place. So in battle, what you would do is, hold up a standard so you could see where the person you wanted to join was, and they would gather to the standard. That would focus this area under the correct commander and they could gather together and make an assault to victory. 23 And kings shall be thy nursing fathers, and their queens thy nursing mothers; they shall bow down to thee with their face towards the earth, and lick up the dust of thy feet; and thou shalt know that I am the Lord; for they shall not be ashamed that wait for me. Somehow, you are going to see the wealth of nations used in restoring the house of Israel to the New Jerusalem and also in restoring the Jews to their ancient land. One of the ways you can look at this fulfilled was because of the English mandates after WW II under General Allenby, something called the Balfore Declaration. It was a declaration that was started by Zionists that was adopted by the British, that the Jews of Europe who had been butchered should have the right to a national homeland. That started the whole process. It was under the direction of the King and Queen of England and Parliament. Other Kings of Denmark and Sweden came in and supported the Balfore Declaration. That opened the way for the Jews to have a national homeland, and the State of Israel was established. kings shall be thy nursing fathers, and their queens thy nursing mothers ; I think the same thing is going to happen with the establishment of Zion. We're going to see the wealth of the worlds somehow brought together to pave the way so that members of the church and others can escape from their nations using modern transportation. Somehow, that is going to happen yet again. 24 For shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captives delivered? The house of Israel has been prey for all these years and has been used. In a future day, the Lord says, shall it remain that way, with the lawful captives delivered? Sister Stroud comments and Mike states that he will do it by miracles. 25 But thus saith the Lord, even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered; for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children. 26 And I will feed them that oppress thee with their own flesh; they shall be drunken with their own blood as with sweet wine; and all flesh shall know that I, the Lord, am thy Savior and thy Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob. Sister Stroud comments, like you were saying you've got to think about all of them. If you want to have fun, there is another thing in Isaiah. Go back to 3 Nephi and let me show you one last thing. I'll show you how to break the words up in Isaiah and what you say and how it works. I guess its over in Mosiah: Mosiah 14 where Abinidi quotes Isaiah 53. Here is another great prophet doing what Nephi is doing, he is quoting Isaiah. I want to go to verses and show you how. If you'll do this, it makes such a difference in understanding scripture. Everywhere it talks about the Father we put and F and everywhere it talks about the Son we put an S. So, start in verse 10: Yet it pleased the Lord (F) to bruise him(s); he (F) hath put him (S) to grief; when thou (S) shalt make his (F) soul an offering for sin he (S) shall see his (S) seed, he (F)shall prolong his (S)days, and the pleasure of the Lord (F) shall prosper in his(s) hand. 11 He (F) shall see the travail of his (S) soul, and shall be satisfied; by his (F)knowledge shall my righteous servant (S) justify many; for he(s) shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore will I (F) divide him (S) a portion with the great, and he (F or S) shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he (S) hath poured out his soul unto death; and he (S)was numbered with the transgressors; and he (S) bore the sins of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. Now when you break that down and take the time to do it, all of a sudden you see a great father/son relationship that ties in with Messiah, Father, advocate, atonement, and everything. That's kind of the ways you'll learn to read Isaiah and take some time to break it down.
