2 INTRODUCTION The Hynes Family Papers, , is centered around Andrew Hynes ( ), a merchant, planter, soldier, and land speculator of Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee. The papers were given to the Tennessee Historical Society by Dr. and Mrs. Barry J. Brown, Nashville, Tennessee. The 1982 addition was loaned for copying by John Heflin. The collection consists of.84 of linear feet of shelf space and has approximately 137 items. There are no restrictions on this collection.
3 SCOPE AND CONTENT The Hynes Family Papers, containing 89 items and spanning the years, , are concentrated in the period 1816 to 1846 and consists of accounts, contracts, correspondences, court records, land records (deeds, entries, plats, surveys) leases, and a power of attorney which documents the career of Colonel Andrew Hynes ( ), merchant, land speculator, and planter of Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee. Correspondence for the years, , consists of 45 letters addressed primarily to Andrew Hynes at Bardstown, Kentucky, Nashville, Tennessee, or Plaquemine, Louisiana. Most prominent among the correspondents is Edward James Gay ( ), merchant and businessman from St. Louis, Missouri, who in 1840 married Lavina Hynes, daughter of Colonel Andrew Hynes. 20 letters by Gay from St. Louis for the years, concern primarily the sugar and molasses business and family affairs. After moving to Iberville Parish, Louisiana, Gay served as U.S. Representative in Congress from 1885 to Other family correspondences includes nine letters by William Rose Hynes ( ), older brother of Colonel Andrew Hynes, whose letters from Bardstown, Kentucky are dated, ; single letters by Mary Jane Hynes (1826-?), who married St. Louis merchant P.R. McCreery in 1846, and Lavinia Hynes Gay (1820-?); and two letters by Colonel Hynes son, William Rose Hynes ( ). Land records including deeds, entries, plats, and surveys are primarily for tracts of land purchased or sold by Colonel Andrew Hynes in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, and Dickson and Robertson Counties, Tennessee, and Nelson County, Kentucky, for the years, The 1982 addition to this collection includes correspondence addressed to Andrew Hynes, , including 27 letters from Edward J. Gay of St. Louis, Missouri, A deed for Lot 23, Nashville, Tennessee, August 23, 1814, is also included.
4 BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Andrew Hynes was born on December 2, 1785 near Bardstown, Nelson County, Kentucky to Thomas Hynes ( ) and Abigail Rose Hynes ( ) of Maryland. In 1804, Hynes was appointed deputy postmaster in Bardstown, Kentucky. In 1809, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee, and became involved in the mercantile business. In 1812, he enlisted as first lieutenant with the Tennessee Volunteers and served as an aide to General Andrew Jackson in the Natchez Expedition. On November 12, 1814, was captain and aide-de-camp under General William Carroll and was active in the New Orleans Campaign. From 1814 to 1816, Hynes served as Adjutant General to the State of Tennessee. On March 2, 1817, Hynes married Nancy Erwin, daughter of Captain Joseph Erwin, of Nashville, Tennessee. In 1824, he served as justice of the peace in Davidson County, Tennessee and operated copper still and tin manufactory on the Public Square in Nashville, Tennessee. On January 21, 1849, Hynes died at his residence near Nashville, Tennessee.
