The rest of the family: children Mary, Bridget, Michael, and Sarah, followed, either unaccompanied, or with James, who returned to Ireland to retrieve them. Michael died during the ocean voyage. Quoting Mary Stack s narrative No doubt the crossing was hard and Bridget later recalled Our own people were not good to us on the boat coming here. We were often hungry. For a few years the family lived and worked in the New York area. Bridget worked for a doctor in New York and Mary worked in Connecticut. James became a successful farmer and stockman of McLean County, IL and owned 160 acres of land. (According to the 1900 Census, Mary Murphy.
