1 The Geneology of Jesus 1.1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham 1.2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, 1.3 and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram, 1.4 and Ram the father of Ammin'adab, and Ammin'adab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, 1.5 and Salmon the father of Bo'az by Rahab, and Bo'az the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, 1.6 and Jesse the father of David the king. 2 When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit; 1.19 and her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit; 1.21 she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." 1.22 All this took place to fulfil what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: 1.23 "Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel" (which means, God with us) When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took his wife, 1.25 but knew her not until she had borne a son; and he called his name Jesus. 2.1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, 2.2 "Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and have come to worship him." 2.3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; 2.4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. 2.5 They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it is written by the prophet: 2.6 'And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will govern my people Israel.'" 2.7 Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star appeared; 2.8 and he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him bring me word, that I too may come and worship him." 2.9 When they had heard the king they went their way; and lo, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came to rest over the place where the child was

3 2.10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy; 2.11 and going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there till I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him." 2.14 And he rose and took the child and his mother by night, and departed to Egypt, 2.15 and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfil what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, "Out of Egypt have I called my son." 2.16 Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, was in a furious rage, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time which he had ascertained from the wise men 2.17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah: 2.18 "A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be consoled, because they were no more." 2.19 But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, 2.20 "Rise, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child's life are dead." 2.21 And he rose and took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel But when he heard that Archelaus reigned over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee And he went and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, "He shall be called a Nazarene."

4 John the Baptist 1.1The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. 1.2As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, "Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way; 1.3the voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight--" 1.4John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 1.5And there went out to him all the country of Judea, and all the people of Jerusalem; and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 1.6Now John was clothed with camel's hair, and had a leather girdle around his waist, and ate locusts and wild honey. John the Baptist 3.1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, 3.2 "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." 3.3 For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight." 3.4 Now John wore a garment of camel's hair, and a leather girdle around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey. 3.5 Then went out to him Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan, 3.6 and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. John the Baptist 3.1 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiber'i-us Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Iturae'a and Trachoni'tis, and Lysa'ni-as tetrarch of Abile'ne, 3.2 in the high-priesthood of Annas and Ca'iaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechari'ah in the wilderness; 3.3 and he went into all the region about the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 3.4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 3.5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth; 3.6 and all flesh shall see the salvation of God." John the Baptist 1.19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?" 1.20 He confessed, he did not deny, but confessed, "I am not the Christ." 1.21 And they asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the prophet?" And he answered, "No." 1.22 They said to him then, "Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" 1.23 He said, "I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way of the Lord,' as the prophet Isaiah said." John Preaches a Messiah 3.11 "I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the granary, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire." John Preaches a Messiah 1.7And he preached, saying, "After me comes he who is mightier than I, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 1.8I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." John Preaches a Messiah 3.15 As the people were in expectation, and all men questioned in their hearts concerning John, whether perhaps he were the Christ, 3.16 John answered them all, "I baptize you with water; but he who is mightier than I is coming, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor, and to gather the wheat into his granary, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire." 3.18 So, with many other exhortations, he preached good news to the people.

5 John Preaches Repentence 3.7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sad'ducees coming for baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 3.8 Bear fruit that befits repentance, 3.9 and do not presume to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father'; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. John Preaches Repentence 3.7 He said therefore to the multitudes that came out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! John Preaches Repentence 1.24 Now they had been sent from the Pharisees They asked him, "Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?" 1.26 John answered them, "I baptize with water; but among you stands one whom you do not know, 1.27 even he who comes after me, the thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie." 1.28 This took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. The Baptism of Jesus 1.9In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 1.10And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens opened and the Spirit descending upon him like a dove; 1.11and a voice came from heaven, "Thou art my beloved Son; with thee I am well pleased." The Baptism of Jesus 3.13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him 3.14 John would have prevented him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" 3.15 But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so now; for thus it is fitting for us to fulfil all righteousness." Then he consented And when Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and alighting on him; 3.17 and lo, a voice from heaven, saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased." The Baptism of Jesus 3.21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, 3.22 and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form, as a dove, and a voice came from heaven, "Thou art my beloved Son; with thee I am well pleased." The Baptism of Jesus 1.29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 1.30 This is he of whom I said, 'After me comes a man who ranks before me, for he was before me.' 1.31 I myself did not know him; but for this I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel." 1.32 And John bore witness, "I saw the Spirit descend as a dove from heaven, and it remained on him I myself did not know him; but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' 1.34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God."

6 The Temptation 1.12The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. 1.13And he was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to him. The Temptation 4.1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil 4.2 And he fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterward he was hungry. 4.3 And the tempter came and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread." 4.4 But he answered, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'" 4.5 Then the devil took him to the holy city, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, 4.6 and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, 'He will give his angels charge of you,' and 'On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.'" 4.7 Jesus said to him, "Again it is written, 'You shall not tempt the Lord your God.'" 4.8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them; 4.9 and he said to him, "All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me." 4.10 Then Jesus said to him, "Begone, Satan! for it is written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.'" 4.11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and ministered to him. The Temptation 4.1 And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led by the Spirit 4.2 for forty days in the wilderness, tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing in those days; and when they were ended, he was hungry. 4.3 The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread." 4.4 And Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone.'" 4.5 And the devil took him up, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, 4.6 and said to him, "To you I will give all this authority and their glory; for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. 4.7 If you, then, will worship me, it shall all be yours." 4.8 And Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.'" 4.9 And he took him to Jerusalem, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here; 4.10 for it is written, 'He will give his angels charge of you, to guard you,' 4.11 and 'On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.'" 4.12 And Jesus answered him, "It is said, 'You shall not tempt the Lord your God.'" 4.13 And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time.

7 First Preaching in Galilee 1.14Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, 1.15and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent, and believe in the gospel." First Preaching in Galilee 4.12 Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee; 4.13 and leaving Nazareth he went and dwelt in Caper'na-um by the sea, in the territory of Zeb'ulun and Naph'tali, 4.14 that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: 4.15 "The land of Zeb'ulun and the land of Naph'tali, toward the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned." 4.17 From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." First Preaching in Galilee 4.14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee, and a report concerning him went out through all the surrounding country And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all. First Preaching in Galilee 4.1 Now when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John 4.2 (although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples), 4.3 he left Judea and departed again to Galilee.

8 Calling the First Disciples 1.16And passing along by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net in the sea; for they were fishermen. 1.17And Jesus said to them, "Follow me and I will make you become fishers of men." 1.18And immediately they left their nets and followed him. 1.19And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zeb'edee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. 1.20And immediately he called them; and they left their father Zeb'edee in the boat with the hired servants, and followed him. Calling the First Disciples 4.18 As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen 4.19 And he said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." 4.20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zeb'edee and John his brother, in the boat with Zeb'edee their father, mending their nets, and he called them Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him. Calling the First Disciples 1.35 The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples; 1.36 and he looked at Jesus as he walked, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God!" 1.37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus Jesus turned, and saw them following, and said to them, "What do you seek?" And they said to him, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?" 1.39 He said to them, "Come and see." They came and saw where he was staying; and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour One of the two who heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother He first found his brother Simon, and said to him, "We have found the Messiah" (which means Christ) He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him, and said, "So you are Simon the son of John? You shall be called Cephas" (which means Peter) The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. And he found Philip and said to him, "Follow me." 1.44 Now Philip was from Beth-sa'ida, the city of Andrew and Peter Philip found Nathan'a-el, and said to him, "We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." 1.46 Nathan'a-el said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see." 1.47 Jesus saw Nathan'a-el coming to him, and said of him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!" 1.48 Nathan'a-el said to him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." 1.49 Nathan'a-el answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" 1.50 Jesus answered him, "Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You shall see greater things than these." 1.51 And he said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man."

9 On Authority (in Capernaum) 1.21And they went into Caper'na-um; and immediately on the sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught. 1.22And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. 1.23And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; 1.24and he cried out, "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God." 1.25But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be silent, and come out of him!" 1.26And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. 1.27And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, "What is this? A new teaching! With authority he commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him." 1.28And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee. Conclusion On Authority (in Capernaum) 7.28 And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, 7.29 for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes. On Authority (in Capernaum) 4.31 And he went down to Caper'na-um, a city of Galilee. And he was teaching them on the sabbath; 4.32 and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word was with authority And in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon; and he cried out with a loud voice, 4.34 " Ah! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God." 4.35 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be silent, and come out of him!" And when the demon had thrown him down in the midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm And they were all amazed and said to one another, "What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out." 4.37 And reports of him went out into every place in the surrounding region. Healing Peter's Mother-in-law 1.29And immediately he left the synagogue, and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 1.30Now Simon's mother-in-law lay sick with a fever, and immediately they told him of her. 1.31And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her; and she served them. Healing Peter's Mother-in-law 8.14 And when Jesus entered Peter's house, he saw his mother-in-law lying sick with a fever; 8.15 he touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she rose and served him. Healing Peter's Mother-in-law 4.38 And he arose and left the synagogue, and entered Simon's house. Now Simon's mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they besought him for her And he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her; and immediately she rose and served them.

10 Healing the Sick at Evening 1.32That evening, at sundown, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons. 1.33And the whole city was gathered together about the door. 1.34And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. Departing from Capernaum 1.35And in the morning, a great while before day, he rose and went out to a lonely place, and there he prayed. 1.36And Simon and those who were with him pursued him, 1.37and they found him and said to him, "Every one is searching for you." 1.38And he said to them, "Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also; for that is why I came out." Healing the Sick at Evening 8.16 That evening they brought to him many who were possessed with demons; and he cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick This was to fulfil what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah, "He took our infirmities and bore our diseases." Healing the Sick at Evening 4.40 Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any that were sick with various diseases brought them to him; and he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them And demons also came out of many, crying, "You are the Son of God!" But he rebuked them, and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ. Departing from Capernaum 4.42 And when it was day he departed and went into a lonely place. And the people sought him and came to him, and would have kept him from leaving them; 4.43 but he said to them, "I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other cities also; for I was sent for this purpose." Preaching in Galilee 1.39And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons. Preaching in Galilee 4.23 And he went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people 4.24 So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains, demoniacs, epileptics, and paralytics, and he healed them And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decap'olis and Jerusalem and Judea and from beyond the Jordan. Preaching in Galilee (Judea) 4.44 And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

11 Miraculous Catch of Fish 5.1 While the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennes'aret. 5.2 And he saw two boats by the lake; but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. 5.3 Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. 5.4 And when he had ceased speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch." 5.5 And Simon answered, "Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets." 5.6 And when they had done this, they enclosed a great shoal of fish; and as their nets were breaking, 5.7 they beckoned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 5.8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord." 5.9 For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the catch of fish which they had taken; 5.10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zeb'edee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; henceforth you will be catching men." 5.11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.

12 Introduction to the Sermon on the Mount/Plain 5.1 Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down his disciples came to him 5.2 And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: The Beatitudes 5.3."Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven 5.4 "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5.5 "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. 5.6 " Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. 5.7 "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. 5.8 "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 5.9 "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven "Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you. The Beatitudes 6.20 And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said: "Blessed are you poor, for yours is the kingdom of God " Blessed are you that hunger now, for you shall be satisfied. "Blessed are you that weep now, for you shall laugh " Blessed are you when men hate you, and when they exclude you and revile you, and cast out your name as evil, on account of the Son of man! 6.23 Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets. Luke's Woes 6.24 " But woe to you that are rich, for you have received your consolation " Woe to you that are full now, for you shall hunger. "Woe to you that laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep " Woe to you, when all men speak well of you, for so their fathers did to the false prophets.

13 Words on the Law 5.17."Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfil them The Constancy of the Law 5.18 For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven "You have heard that it was said to the men of old, 'You shall not kill; and whoever kills shall be liable to judgment.' But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away, than for one dot of the law to become void. The Widow's Son at Nain 7.11 Soon afterward he went to a city called Na'in, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him As he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a large crowd from the city was with her And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, "Do not weep." 7.14 And he came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." 7.15 And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother Fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and "God has visited his people!" 7.17 And this report concerning him spread through the whole of Judea and all the surrounding country.

14 The Women Collegues 8.1 Soon afterward he went on through cities and villages, preaching and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him, 8.2 and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Mag'dalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, 8.3 and Joan'na, the wife of Chuza, Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their means. The Samaritan Villagers 9.51 When the days drew near for him to be received up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem And he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him; 9.53 but the people would not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, "Lord, do you want us to bid fire come down from heaven and consume them?" 9.55 But he turned and rebuked them And they went on to another village. The Return of the Seventy The seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!" And he said to them, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shall hurt you Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you; but rejoice that your names are written in heaven."

15 The Parable of the Good Samaritan But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him he passed by on the other side So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was; and when he saw him, he had compassion, and went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; then he set him on his own beast and brought him to an inn, and took care of him And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, 'Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.' Which of these three, do you think, proved neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?" He said, "The one who showed mercy on him." And Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise." Mary and Martha Now as they went on their way, he entered a village; and a woman named Martha received him into her house And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching But Martha was distracted with much serving; and she went to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me." But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; one thing is needful. Mary has chosen the good portion, which shall not be taken away from her."

16 The Friend at Midnight 11.5 And he said to them, "Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, 'Friend, lend me three loaves; 11.6 for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him'; 11.7 and he will answer from within, 'Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything'? 11.8 I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him whatever he needs. The Parable of the Rich Fool One of the multitude said to him, "Teacher, bid my brother divide the inheritance with me." But he said to him, "Man, who made me a judge or divider over you?" And he said to them, "Take heed, and beware of all covetousness; for a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions." And he told them a parable, saying, "The land of a rich man brought forth plentifully; and he thought to himself, 'What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?' And he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down my barns, and build larger ones; and there I will store all my grain and my goods And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, be merry.' But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul is required of you; and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?' So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God."

17 On Murder 5.22 But I say to you that every one who is angry with his brother shall be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother shall be liable to the council, and whoever says, 'You fool!' shall be liable to the hell of fire So if you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, 5.24 leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift Make friends quickly with your accuser, while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison; 5.26 truly, I say to you, you will never get out till you have paid the last penny. On Murder " And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? As you go with your accuser before the magistrate, make an effort to settle with him on the way, lest he drag you to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer put you in prison I tell you, you will never get out till you have paid the very last copper." On Adultery 5.27."You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.' 5.28 But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away; it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell. On Swearing 5.33."Again you have heard that it was said to the men of old, 'You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.' 5.34 But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, 5.35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black Let what you say be simply 'Yes' or 'No'; anything more than this comes from evil.

18 On Retaliation 5.38."You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' The Lord's Prayer 6.9 Pray then like this: Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name 6.10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven Give us this day our daily bread; 6.12 And forgive us our debts, As we also have forgiven our debtors; 6.13 And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; 6.15 but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. On Retaliation 6.29 To him who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from him who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt Give to every one who begs from you; and of him who takes away your goods do not ask them again. The Lord's Prayer 11.1 He was praying in a certain place, and when he ceased, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples." 11.2 And he said to them, "When you pray, say: "Father, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come Give us each day our daily bread; 11.4 and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive every one who is indebted to us; and lead us not into temptation." On Fasting 6.16."And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward 6.17 But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 6.18 that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. On Treasures 6.19." Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, 6.20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. On Treasures Sell your possessions, and give alms; provide yourselves with purses that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

19 The Sound Eye 6.22 "The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light; 6.23 but if your eye is not sound, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! Serving Two Masters 6.24 "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. The Sound Eye Your eye is the lamp of your body; when your eye is sound, your whole body is full of light; but when it is not sound, your body is full of darkness Therefore be careful lest the light in you be darkness If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly bright, as when a lamp with its rays gives you light." Serving Two Masters No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon." The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all this, and they scoffed at him But he said to them, "You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts; for what is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.

20 On Anxiety 6.25."Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 6.26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 6.27 And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his span of life? 6.28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; 6.29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O men of little faith? 6.31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' 6.32 For the Gentiles seek all these things; and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well "Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Let the day's own trouble be sufficient for the day. On Judging 7.1."Judge not, that you be not judged 7.2 For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get. 7.3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 7.4 Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when there is the log in your own eye? 7.5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye. On Anxiety And he said to his disciples, "Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat, nor about your body, what you shall put on For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. On Judging " Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; 6.38 give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For the measure you give will be the measure you get back." 6.39 He also told them a parable: "Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? 6.40 A disciple is not above his teacher, but every one when he is fully taught will be like his teacher Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 6.42 Or how can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,' when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother's eye.

21 On Profaning the Holy 7.6 "Do not give dogs what is holy; and do not throw your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under foot and turn to attack you. On Prayer 7.7."Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you 7.8 For every one who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 7.9 Or what man of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? 7.10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? 7.11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him! The Golden Rule 7.12 So whatever you wish that men would do to you, do so to them; for this is the law and the prophets On Prayer 11.9 And I tell you, Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you For every one who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" The Golden Rule 6.31 And as you wish that men would do to you, do so to them " If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the selfish Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.

22 The Narrow Gate 7.13 "Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is easy, that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many For the gate is narrow and the way is hard, that leads to life, and those who find it are few. The Test of a Good Person 7.15."Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves 7.16 You will know them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorns, or figs from thistles? 7.17 So, every sound tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears evil fruit A sound tree cannot bear evil fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. On Self Deception 7.20 Thus you will know them by their fruits "Not every one who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven 7.22 On that day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?' 7.23 And then will I declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from me, you evildoers.' Hearing and Doing 7.24 "Every one then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house upon the rock; 7.25 and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock And every one who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house upon the sand; 7.27 and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell; and great was the fall of it." The Narrow Gate And some one said to him, "Lord, will those who are saved be few?" And he said to them, " Strive to enter by the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able When once the householder has risen up and shut the door, you will begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, 'Lord, open to us.' He will answer you, 'I do not know where you come from.' The Test of a Good Person 6.43 " For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit; 6.44 for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thorns, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush The good man out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil man out of his evil treasure produces evil; for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. On Self Deception 6.46 " Why do you call me 'Lord, Lord,' and not do what I tell you? Hearing and Doing 6.47 Every one who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 6.48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep, and laid the foundation upon rock; and when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house, and could not shake it, because it had been well built But he who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation; against which the stream broke, and immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great."
