The root is below the gumline. It makes up about 2/3rds of the tooth's total length. Names of teeth Incisor (like a beaver) for snipping and cutting food Canine (like a dog) for gripping and tearing food Molar (like a sheep) for crushing and grinding food

Plaque rots the teeth and causes gum disease The inside of a tooth Enamel This is the hard, white covering of the tooth which protects the tooth from the wear and tear of chewing. Dentine This is the yellow, bone-like material that supports the enamel. It also has nerve fibres that tell you when something is wrong inside the tooth. Pulp This is the centre of the tooth and is a soft tissue that contains blood vessels and nerves. The pulp is responsible for the tooth being able to receive nourishment and transmit signals to the brain. Cementum This covers most of the root of the tooth and helps attach the tooth to the bones in the jaw. Reasons for cleaning your teeth 1. Prevent decay and fillings 2. Remove plaque 3. 12 Religious Studies Noah and the flood God was unhappy with the world that he had created so he decided to send a flood. Noah, his wife, his sons Ham, Shem and Japheth and their wives were to be saved. God told Noah to build an ark out of cypress wood which was to be coated with tar to keep it waterproof. God told Noah to take his family with him on the ark. He was to fill it with animals: two of every kind, one boy and one girl. After forty days and forty nights of rain, God sent a great wind to suppress the flood. The ark landed on Mount Ararat To find out if there was dry land, Noah sent out a raven. It did not return. Then Noah sent out a dove, the first time it returned with an olive branch a sign of land. The second time it did not return. God sent a rainbow as a sign of his promise that he would never send a flood again. Abraham and Isaac Abraham was told by God that he would be the father of many nations. God told him to count the stars in the sky and that each star was to stand for one of his descendants. Canaan was to be his Promised Land. Abraham and his wife Sarah were very old but they were blessed with a son who they called Isaac. One day God decided to test Abraham s faith. God told Abraham to go up into the mountains and sacrifice his own son to prove his loyalty to God. Abraham was about to kill Isaac when God called him to stop and sacrifice a ram instead.

13 Joseph and his multicoloured coat favouritism and jealousy Jacob lived in Canaan with his twelve sons. Joseph and Benjamin were his favourite sons as they were the children of Rachel, his favourite wife. Jacob gave Joseph a multicoloured coat. Joseph had a dream which showed him to be more important than his brothers. His brothers were so jealous that they decided to kill him. Instead they sold him to some travelling merchants for twenty pieces of silver. Joseph s brothers ripped his coat and dipped it in goat s blood. Joseph s brothers lied and Jacob was very sad when he was told that Joseph was dead. Joseph was taken to Egypt and sold as a slave to Potiphar. Potiphar s wife told lies about him and Joseph was thrown into prison. Joseph was in prison with a butler and a baker. They both had dreams that Joseph interpreted. One day Pharaoh dreamt about seven thin cows eating up seven fat cows. Joseph said that Egypt would have seven years of plenty followed by seven years of famine. He advised Pharaoh to store lots of food. During the famine the eleven brothers went to Joseph to beg for food. Joseph hid a cup in Benjamin s sack to test his brothers. Jacob came to Egypt to help Benjamin and he was reunited with his long lost son Joseph.

14 Geography During the exam the children will need to: know that Geography is the study of people and places be able to label the seven continents of the world Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Oceania, Europe, Antarctica know the difference between a city, a country and a continent A city is a large and important town where many people and work Guildford is a city A country is a division of land within a continent. A continent is a large area of land on the earth. be able to name the points of, and use, an 8 point compass Recognise OS symbols including river, car park, school, picnic area, church and museum.

15 History The River Nile The Ancient Egyptians Flows through the middle of Egypt. On both sides of the Nile is desert. People could not live in Egypt if the Nile did not exist. In ancient times the Nile would flood each year, making the land fertile and good for growing crops. The river would be used for: travelling water for crops and to drink fish Farming There were three seasons of four months each. In the flooding season the land was flooded by the River Nile. In the growing season the river went back to its banks and the land appeared again. The third season was harvest time. The Egyptians worked very hard in the second season to put the land in order after the flood. They dug new ditches, ploughed the land and planted seeds for their crops. Tutankhamun Howard Carter was an archaeologist who discovered the tomb in He found several rooms under the ground, filled with artefacts such as beds, chariots, statues and a throne (things the Egyptians believed a king would need in his next life.) Tutankhamun s mask had the heads of a vulture and a cobra on it. The Egyptians believed that the vulture god looked after the south of Egypt and the cobra god looked afetr the north. This showed that the pharaoh was in charge of the whole country.

16 Pharaohs The pharaohs were very important. Their job was to defend Egypt from enemies, keep law and order and be just and fair. Hatshepsut was a woman, but called herself king. She often wore men s clothes and a false beard. Tutankhamun was king when he was 8, he married at 9 and was 18 when he died. Many believe that he was murdered. Rameses II was king for 66 years. He kept Egypt s enemies under control and he built more temples than any other pharoah. He also had many statues made of himself. Cleopatra tried very hard to stop her country being taken over by the Romans. She was said to be very beautiful. A Roman general, Mark Antony, was in love with her. When Rome captured Egypt in 30BC she killed herself with a poisonous snake. Egyptian Homes Poor people s homes 4 or 5 rooms, built with bricks made from River Nile mud painted white to keep the house cool roof made of wood cellar under the house to keep food and drink cool Rich people s homes rich people often had two houses, one in the town and one in the country built with bricks made from River Nile mud had large gardens with flowers and ponds and were surrounded by a wall walls painted with patterns and pictures from nature servants, storerooms and animals were kept separate from the house Mummification When rich Egyptians died they would be taken to the embalmer s workshop. Anubis was the god of embalming. Their internal organs would be taken out. The embalmer would put salt, spices, oil and perfume on the body to preserve it and to make it smell better. The mummy would be wrapped in linen cloth and little treasures or amulets would be tucked inside the bandages. The mummy would be lowered into a coffin and put into a tomb.

17 The Afterlife The Egyptians thought that the spirit of the dead person would leave the body and cross the River of Death. It would enter the gates of the afterlife, guarded by two serpents. The gods would decide if the dead person had led a good or bad life by weighing their heart against a feather. If the heart was heavier than the feather, it meant that the person had lead a wicked life and would be eaten by a monster. If it was lighter then the person would enter the afterlife. Scribes and writing The ancient Egyptian people were amongst the first to invent writing. They invented picture writing. The pictures are called hieroglyphs. They wrote on papyrus, which was a form of paper. They cut reeds from beside the Nile and split them open. They cut the middle into long strips. They laid some strips lengthways on a cloth and then put some more strips sideways on top. They put another cloth on top and hammered it all over. The reeds stuck together to make a flat surface to write on when it had dried out.
