SAUL SOLOMON DAVID
SAUL - First king of Israel - Tall, handsome, and from a wealthy family - Anointed by Samuel - Started off hiding in the baggage - King during the David and Goliath story - Killed himself on the battlefield - King for 40 years
SAUL Sin: Saul did not kill all the Amalakites or kill all of their sheep. - First king of Israel - Tall, handsome, and from a wealthy family - Anointed by Samuel - Started off hiding in the baggage - King during the David and Goliath story - Killed himself on the battlefield - King for 40 years
DAVID - Shepherd - David was anointed by Samuel - Waited 15 years to become king - During his reign, Israel was at war - He desired to follow God s will - He wanted to build a temple - King for 40 years
DAVID Sin: David saw, sent for, and slept with Bathsheba and murdered her husband. - Shepherd - David was anointed by Samuel - Waited 15 years to become king - During his reign, Israel was at war - He desired to follow God s will - He wanted to build a temple - King for 40 years
SOLOMON - Son of David and Bathsheba - Name comes from the root word "Shalom" - Noted for his wisdom - Took 7 years to build the temple - Had 1,000 wives and concubines - King for 40 years
1 Kings 3:1 Solomon made an alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt and married his daughter. He brought her to the City of David until he finished building his palace and the temple of the Lord, and the wall around Jerusalem.
1 Kings 3:2-3 The people, however, were still sacrificing at the high places, because a temple had not yet been built for the Name of the Lord. 3 Solomon showed his love for the Lord by walking according to the instructions given him by his father David, except that he offered sacrifices and burned incense on the high places.
1 Kings 3:4 The king went to Gibeon to offer sacrifices, for that was the most important high place, and Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar.
1 Kings 3:5 At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon during the night in a dream, and God said, Ask for whatever you want me to give you.
1 Kings 3:6-7 Solomon answered, You have shown great kindness to your servant, my father David, because he was faithful to you and righteous and upright in heart. You have continued this great kindness to him and have given him a son to sit on his throne this very day. 7 Now, Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties.
1 Kings 3:9-10 So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours? 10 The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this.
WISDOM is the ability to discern or judge what is true, right, or lasting. KNOWLEDGE is information gained through experience, reasoning, or acquaintance.
WISDOM is the fitting application of KNOWLEDGE. WISDOM is using KNOWLEDGE in the right way, at the right time.
KNOWLEDGE understands the traffic signal has turned red WISDOM applies the brakes
KNOWLEDGE sees the quicksand WISDOM walks around it
KNOWLEDGE memorizes the Ten Commandments WISDOM obeys them
KNOWLEDGE learns of God WISDOM loves Him
1 Kings 3:13 Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for both wealth and honor so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings.
1 Kings 4:29 God gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight, and a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand on the seashore.
WISDOM 1 Kings 3: Prostitutes 1 Kings 10: Queen of Sheba
How do we seek WISDOM?
How do we seek WISDOM? 1. Study of God s Word
How do we seek WISDOM? 2. Be an Example - Building a Spiritual Legacy
How do we seek WISDOM? 3. Not Wavering - Finish Strong
David was a portrait of success and failure. David didn't walk in perfection. David walked with the Lord in confession, repentance, and forgiveness. This pattern will be key for any one of us who wants to finish well.
