5 FROM OUR SENIOR RABBI ED-JEW-TAINMENT Some of my rabbinic colleagues are disheartened because they believe services and Temple programs have become all about entertaining people as opposed to teaching them or moving them emotionally towards their better selves. They have come up with a term that combines Judaism and Entertainment and Education referred to as Ed-jew-tainment. I feel a bit differently than some of my colleagues. Judaism is absolutely compelling, but it must also be presented in a way that speaks to people s hearts and minds. Do you remember the automobile commercial where the saleperson says to the man, This isn t your father s Oldsmobile. We must continually create a Judaism that is compelling, inspiring and uplifting so that our faith means something to people; so that our Judaism is ours; relevant for today based in the roots of our ancestors and yet speaks to our modern day sensibilities. When people say to me, Judaism doesn t feel relevant in our lives, I am understanding, but inside I am dumbfounded because the one thing I learned in rabbinical school is that Judaism can speak to every part of our lives we just have to find and access the material. Judaism is as dynamic and fluid as it has ever been, filled with wisdom beyond measure. My job as a rabbi/teacher is to help people find those points of connection between their lives and their faith. That is always our Temple s job as well. But it is also the responsibility of the person to be curious and not just say, Services don t speak to me, so forget about it. Or Torah study doesn t seem like a good use of my time, so forget about it. Come to me or Rabbi DePaolo and we will find the connection. It is there. I like to joke that I can even find Jewish connections for atheists (and while funny, it is true I can.). I truly love being Jewish. Our synagogue revels in sharing that spiritual enthusiasm with our members and with the secular community as well. We celebrate the sparkle in a kindergartener s eyes when they see the Torah for the first time, when they learn about tzedakah, when they help someone with special needs, when they learn that the mezuzah is a reminder to be nice in the world, and so much more. SHM is on the verge of a renaissance and in the next months you will hear and learn about new and compelling programs and experiences that will help you connect to our faith. As we build our campus, we are also building our soul and spirit to flourish for the next many generations of Jewish families in Orange County. On March 16, 2018 at 7:30pm, Rabbi Rick Jacobs, the President of the Union for Reform Judaism will be speaking at Temple. This Union is the largest and oldest Jewish movement today. Rabbi Jacobs will be speaking on Reform Judaism for the 21st Century. His words promise to inspire and uplift, challenge and teach. It is an honor to welcome him to our synagogue and I hope you will join us for this special night of learning. Rabbi Richard Steinberg The Rona Perley Memorial Senior Rabbinic Chair RABBI RICK JACOBS MARCH 16TH - 7:30PM - SHM Rabbi Rick Jacobs is president of the Union for Reform Judaism, the most powerful force in North American Jewish life. The URJ leads the largest and most diverse Jewish movement in North America, with almost 900 congregations reaching nearly 1.5 million people. For nearly 150 years, the URJ has been at the forefront in promoting an open, progressive Judaism. Judaism is alive and very well. Let s let it live inside of each of us and our children and grandchildren. A LIFETIME OF BELONGING MARCH

7 FROM OUR ASSISTANT RABBI Who Doesn t Love Passover? According to several recent surveys, the Passover seder is the most widely known and participated in Jewish ritual. Even Jews who will never set foot in a synagogue, nor speak to a rabbi, Jews who barely identify as Jewish will tell you that Passover is their favorite holiday and they attend a Seder. What I always want to know is why? Don t get me wrong, I love Passover too. I love planning the seder, and preparing our family s favorite Passover recipes. But I m a rabbi! What difference does it make which Jewish holiday I like the best? I m pretty much supposed to like them all. So what appeal does Passover hold for everyone else? For one, the Passover seder is a home-based ritual. One does not need to attend a synagogue to celebrate Passover. (Though we would love to see you next year when our building project is complete, and we host our community seder once more.) So I think that part of Passover s power is the fact that so many people have such strong sense memories surrounding this holiday. Like hearing the voice of a beloved relative reading from the Haggadah; smelling a cherished family recipe cooking on the stove; or seeing the table set with the holiday dishes. All of these experiences surrounding celebrating Passover in one s home (or a friend or family member s home) strengthen our connection to the holiday. The memories from seders past draw us in every year as we perform these traditions once more. The seder is also a powerful educational tool. Our ancient rabbis modeled the Passover seder after the symposia they saw in Ancient Greece and Rome. These symposia were designed to encourage discussion and debate of a topic over the course of a prolonged meal. The rabbis then built upon this model, creating an experiential night designed to help us learn lessons of the story of the Exodus. Consider the seder plate. We study each object placed on it, making sure to highlight their significance. Then there are the four questions with their repetitive, simple melody, drawing our attention to the specific rituals of the seder and the meaning we are meant to derive from them. What purpose do these special Passover-centric rituals serve in our learning? For the ancient rabbis they were meant to help us understand the Exodus story not only as something that happened to our ancestors, but a process that we too experienced. The rabbis explain that one is commanded at Passover to feel as if you, yourself, were liberated from Egypt. The seder is meant to help us understand and even experience the transition from slavery and degradation to freedom and praise. Of course, there are many lessons we can draw from the Passover seder, and that is perhaps one of the most powerful reasons people find such meaning in celebrating this holiday. The rabbis chose the best educational tools at their disposal to help them shape this learning experience. And we can do the same thing. You can shape your seder to both tell the story of the Exodus, while also emphasizing the theme or lesson most important to you. It s actually an empowering holiday. You are in control of your own seder in your own home!! This year Passover begins at sundown on Friday, March 30. I want to encourage you to not only celebrate Passover, but to take time this year to think about the meaning this holiday holds for Rabbi Sarah DePaolo Jaffe Family Assistant Rabbinic Chair you and find ways to express that. Do you want to reimagine the learning tools you use during the seder, like finger puppets for the plagues, or a Jeopardy-style four questions? Do you want to consider your memories around the holiday, and perhaps try a new recipe or ritual, and add to your family s traditions? Perhaps you want to try a different haggadah this year and find a new theme to explore through your seder? All of these options, and so many more are available to you as you plan and prepare for Passover. And that is what I, at least, love most about this holiday. If you are interested in delving deeper into the themes and traditions of Passover, and would like help in reimagining a part (or all) of your seder, please let me know. And I hope you will share with me the many other reasons that you and your family love Passover. A LIFETIME OF BELONGING MARCH

13 SCHOOL NEWS PURIM AND YOUR JEWISH IDENTITY As Purim quickly approaches, we will read the Megillah (Book of Esther) and dress up in our favorite costumes and boo at the word Haman, along with eating yummy Hamentashen. But what you may not realize is that Purim offers parents a great teaching moment about being proud of their Jewish identity. Heather Rosenthal Religious School Principal The Alpert-Waldman Family Education Chair Mordechai and Esther hid their true identity from the Persian empire. They assimilated into Persian society without anyone questioning who they were. It was only when the Jewish people s lives were in jeopardy from Haman did they decide to reveal their Jewish roots. Similarly, living in Orange County can be tough for our children as they may feel the need to assimilate and not show their love for Judaism. We live in different times than our parents and our grandparents. For some, not sharing their Jewish identity was a way of life. For others, they lived in fear of the repercussions of identifying as Jewish. We should be teaching our children to be proud and loud about being Jewish- especially in a county where only 15% of Jews affiliate with synagogue life. How many of our children may be the only Jewish student in their class or the only one who attends Religious School (and actually enjoys it)? For our clergy and me, our goal is to make our children proud to be Jewish and know that they have a whole community of support behind them when they proudly say, it s cool to be Jewish. Although Mordechai and Esther lived in very different times and chose to assimilate for their own protection, I strongly encourage our children to not hide who they are, but instead, stand proud for their Jewish identity. YOU RE NEVER TOO YOUNG We have Religious School programs for the tiniest of Tots! A LIFETIME OF BELONGING MARCH
