2 MEDITATION & MEMORIZATION Bible Reading Calendars are not new to the Christian world. Several Study Bibles have these Calendars in the introductory or concluding pages. But a new generation of Christians has come up which confines itself to the reading of only a few favourite passages of the Bible. No wonder the spiritual growth of most of these Christians is stunted. About the Bible we read, ALL Scripture is PROFITABLE... (2 Tim 3:16). There is nothing unnecessary in all the sixtysix Books of our Bible. This Calendar is to help you read through the ENTIRE BIBLE. Generally the Bible Reading Calendars provide a plan by which you can read through the Bible in a single year s time. This means that the daily portions are quite large. An average Christian is not able to cover whatever is prescribed for each day. To overcome this difficulty we have presented here a plan to spread out the portions for a 2-year period. The daily portions are also divided between morning and evening, which means you will have to read only one or two chapters per sitting. You may perhaps have the morning portion for your private reading, and the evening portion can be read as a family. Over two thirds of the Bible is the Old Testament, and the rest is New Testament. We Christians are living under the New Covenant. It s only logical that we read the New Testament more frequently than the Old Testament. The plan in this Calendar helps you read through the Old Testament once, and the New Testament and the Psalms twice, in two years time. The Book of Psalms is known for its devotional richness. This plan therefore provides you a balanced diet! Choose for your daily reading a Bible with reasonably large letters and enough of line space. Pick up a translation which suits you. Several modern translations like the New King James Version (NKJV), New International Version (NIV), English Standard Version (ESV), and New Living Translation (NLT) are quite reliable. Choose a place of solitude or least disturbance to read the Bible. I find reading the Bible on knees most helpful to assume a reverential and worshipful attitude towards the God of the Bible. Let your opening prayer be that of the Psalmist, Open my eyes, O Lord, that I may see wondrous things from Your Law (Psa 119:18). Do switch off your mobilephone while reading the Bible. Reading aloud also helps better concentration and understanding. 3 4

3 Don t hesitate to underline the words, phrases, lines and verses which appeal to you in the daily reading. Make sure you use a quality ballpen lest the ink bleeds through the fine Bible paper. Ask the following questions on the daily portion of the Scriptures Does this portion speak of Any sin to forsake? Any warning to take heed? Any promise to embrace? Any correction to make? Any commandment to obey? Any example to emulate? Another set of questions can be What does this passage speak about my responsibility to God? my responsibility to others? This way of meditating the Bible saves us from the deception of just being hearers of God s Word and not doers of it (Js 1:22). Miles Coverdale ( ), an outstanding Bible Translator, has written his own Bible study technique It shall greatly help you to understand the Scripture, if you mark not only what is spoken or written, but of whom, and to whom, with what words, at what time, where, to what intent, under what circumstances, considering what goes before and what follows. Keep a notebook to note down then and there whatever God speaks to you from the passage you read. Don t trust your memory too much. So much of personal revelations from the Scriptures we lose because we are not disciplined to use such Bible notebooks. This a computer age no doubt, but there s no better alternative to handwriting. The content of these Bible notebooks are your spiritual journals. They will come in handy when you want to share Biblical truths with others. Review your notes now and then. If you come across passages too difficult for you to understand, even after sustaining therein for a while, leave a question mark on the margin and keep reading further. What you don t understand in the first reading, you will understand during further readings. Your question marks will become exclamation marks! If there are arrears in the daily reading portions of the weekdays, catch up during weekends. Even if you are not able to make it up, leave those portions and proceed with the portions of the forthcoming dates. Resist the temptation to give up following of this reading plan. Perseverance is inevitable to Christian development. This Calendar can be used again after completing it in two years. May be next time you can pick up another Translation of the Bible. This will help maintain freshness. 5 6

4 Memorization Against each month of meditation is given a plan by which you can memorize a brief portion over a period of three or four days. If you follow this plan, you would memorize atleast 100 verses each year! These are select verses on a wide range of subjects. The choice of Bible translation is vital when we talk about memorization. Bible translations can be broadly classified as word-for-word translations and thought-for-thought translations. The King James Version (KJV), New King James Version (NKJV), and English Standard Version (ESV) are all word-for-word translations. The New Living Translation (NLT) and Good News Bible (GNB) are thought-for-thought translations. The New International Version (NIV) is somewhere in the middle, balancing between word-for-word and thought-for-thought translations. While thought-for-thought translations are helpful for meditation, word-for-word translations are ideal for memorization. This is the general rule. If you are a regular user of English Bible, and English is not your mother tongue, you may try memorizing the prescribed verses in your mother tongue also. The memory verses are chosen from the daily reading portions of the said dates. This is only logical. This way it would be easier for you to 7 quickly recollect what in general the various chapters of the Bible books speak about. Meditation makes memorization easy, and vice versa. This also keeps us from the error of taking a text out of context in Biblical interpretation. Make sure you memorize the corresponding chapter and verse numbers also. If this practice is contnued for years, you will become a Walking Concordance of the Bible! If you had never memorized the names of the sixtysix Books of the Bible in the given order, do it now. This is basic in acquiring a working knowledge of the Scriptures. You will save lot of time when using a Reference Bible or Concordance if you know which book is where. It is always advisable to write down on rough sheets whatever you are memorizing. Keep 3 inches by 2 inches plain cards on which you can neatly write the memory verses and carry them with you for frequent review during daytime. All such cards can be dated also. Those in the middle age and above might think it s too late to try memorizing Bible verses. This is not right. Memory power gets sharpened by practice and usage. Start and see! As and when possible, do review the memory verses of the previous dates. You are not preparing for an examination, and so there needs be no tension! Spouses can recite to each other, and similarly parents and children. This is in line with God s commandment in Deuteronomy 6:6-9. 8

5 It s common and easy to lose fervour and enthusiasm in any Christian discipline. That s why we as believers need to encourage one another. I suggest you form a small circle of Bible Lovers Fellowship, as two or three believers, to talk to each other over the phone everyday for a few minutes to share a few thoughts on the day s portions of meditation and memorization. The Bible says, Those who feared the Lord spoke to one another, and the Lord listened and heard them; so a book of remembrance was written before Him for those who fear the Lord and who meditate on His Name (Mal 3:16). Without such a network, I wonder how it would ever be possible to obey Biblical admonitions like Hebrews 3:13, Exhort one another DAILY? Also we understand the various dimensions of the love of God and His ways better in the company of God s people (Eph 3:18). Confine this circle of friendship to members of the same sex. This circle will also be helpful for mutual recitation of the memory portions. Jesus told His disciples that the Holy Spirit would remind them of all the words He had spoken to them (Jn 14:26). Unless we do our homework of memorization our hearts would be empty, and what is there for the Holy Spirit to remind us of? Therefore, beloved, Scripture memorization is not optional but obligatory for Christians. After going through the discipline of memorization for two years, as per this Calendar, you can either use the next two years for review; or, choose yourself another set of memory verses. A lifetime won t be sufficient to meditate and memorize the Scriptures. With the Psalmist we would testify I have seen the consummation of all perfection, but Your commandment is exceedingly broad! (Psa 119:96). Scripture memorization has got three immediate benefits With the Scripture in heart, a) You can overcome temptations (Psa 119:11; Mt 4:1-11); b) You can understand God s will (Psa 40:8); c) You can worship and pray acceptably (Col 3:16; Mt 26:52-54). 9 10
