He shall elevate the sheaf before Hashem for acceptance in your behalf; the Cohen shall elevate it on the day after the sabbath... Until that very day, until you have brought the offering of your G-d, you shall eat no bread... And from the day on which you bring the sheaf of elevation offering--the day after the sabbath--you shall count off seven weeks. They must be complete; you must count until the day after the seventh week--fifty days; then you shall bring an offering of new grain to Hashem. 2 On Pesach the Children of Israel ran away from the חמץ bread to portray the glory of the.מצה Now, on Shavuot, when the Children of Israel have merited receiving the heavenly bread, the manna, isn t it even more appropriate to abolish the,חמץ totally without any reminder of it? Why, therefore, is the offering of Shavuot?חמץ is made of ]2[ בפסח יצאו ישראל מלחם החמץ בגין כבודה של המצה. עכשיו )בחג השבועות( כשזכו ישראל ללחם העליון, האם לא ראוי היה שיתבטל החמץ ולא יראה כלל?! מדוע קרבנו הוא חמץ, ועוד שביום זה התבטל יצר הרע? Zohar, B, 183 (Translated)( )This partial quote is repeated in source #7 below Ami: I really don t understand this. Fifty days ago, on Pesach, we worked so hard to get rid of all the chametz and now we take chametz and bring it as an offering to Hashem? Does this make sense? And why did the Israelites merit to inherit the land of Israel? 3 העומר... )Vayikra Raba, 28( Ami: Why is it that the Mitzva of Sefirat Ha Omer has the power to return us to Eretz Yisrael? I mean, there are so many mitzvot that can only be fulfilled in Eretz Yisrael, what is so special about this mitzva? Yisrael: I don t know but the interesting thing is, that although this Midrash was written so long ago, in a sense, our sages predicted the future Ami: What do you mean? Yisrael: I mean look at our modern festivals of redemption both Yom Ha Atzmaut and Yom Yerushalayim happen to occur on Sefirat Ha Omer isn t it amazing? So I guess there is really a connection between Sefirat Ha Omer and our rights to Eretz Yisrael but what is it? How did the make (the omer) ready? The messangers of the court used to go from the late after-noon of the Yom Tov and tie the corn in bunches while it was yet unreaped to make it easier to reap; and the towns nearby al assembled there together that it might be reaped with much pomp. When it grew dark he called out : Is the sun set? and they answered, yes! Is the sun set? and they answered, yes! Is this a sickle? and they answered, yes! Is this a sickle? and they answered, yes! When does Sefirat Ha Omer begin according to our sages? Why do our sages apparently enable the breaking of the Shabbat for the sake of the Omer? Agriculture, for other nations is merely a plain economic factor. But nevertheless for the nation that carries the title Holy of the Holies, for which land, language and all its values are holy also its agriculture is filed with holiness. The holiness inscribed in agriculture becomes noticeable by the celebration of the reaping of the Omer ]5[...החקלאות, הלא היא אצל כל העמים רק גורם כלכלי חיוני פשוט. אבל העם אשר הנושא שלו כולו הוא קודש קדשים, וארצו ושפתו וכל ערכיו כולם קודש הם... - הרי גם חקלאותו כולה היא ספוגת קודש. והקודש הזה שביסוד החקלאי מובלט הוא על ידי זה שחגיגת ראשית הקציר - העומר - עולה הוא למדרגת עבודת הקודש היותר עליונה, והקרבן המקודש עימו הוא קרבן ציבור שדוחה את השבת. 5 The Judaism of the past, from Egypt until now, is a long battle against nature. Against the ugly side of nature, that of general humanity, even that of individuals and of entire nations. We have done battle with nature in order to prevail over it and bring it down into its place nature succumbed to us. The worlds become fragrant. At the very depth of nature is a growing demand for holiness and purity, for spiritual delicacy and purification of life We are all drawing closer to nature, which is also drawing nearer to us. It is being defeated by us, its demands match our demands, which are noble because they stem from holiness. The young spirit that is imprinted on the land, its language, its freedom, its honor, its literature, its strength, possessions and feelings, all flow through nature, which is, at its very heart, imbued with holy fire Our physical demand is great. We need a healthy body. Through our intense preoccupation with spirituality, we forgot the holiness of the body. We neglected our physical strength. We forgot that we have holy flesh, no less than holy spirits. All of our t shuva will succeed only if it will be, along with its spiritual splendor, also a physical t shuva ]6[ היהדות של העבר, ממצרים ועד הנה, מלחמה ארוכה היא נגד הטבע, בצידו הכעור לחמנו בטבע כדי לנצחו, כדי לרדותו בתוך ביתו. הוא נכנע בפנינו, העולמות הולכים ומתבשמים, בעצם עומק הטבע תביעה גדולה מתגברת לקדושה ולטהרה הננו כולנו הולכים ומתקרבים אל הטבע והוא מתקרב אלינו הרוח הצעיר התובע את ארצו, שפתו, חירותו וכבודו, ספרותו וכחו, רכושו, רגשותיו, נזרמים הם על ידי שטף של טבע שבתוכיותו מלא הוא אש קודש גדולה היא תביעתנו הגופנית, גוף בריא אנו צריכים, התעסקנו הרבה בנפשיות, שכחנו את קדושת הגוף, זנחנו את הבריאות והגבורה הגופנית, שכחנו שיש לנו בשר קודש, לא פחות ממה שיש לנו רוח הקודש. עזבנו את החיים המעשיים כל תשובתנו תעלה בידינו רק אם תהיה, עם כל הוד רוחניותה, גם תשובה גשמית יוצרת דם בריא, בשר בריא, גופים חטובים ואיתנים, רוח לוהט זורח על גבי שרירים חזקים
