8 Storm Shelter
Storms will come. We need shelter. Hardly a day goes by that I don t check the weather app on my phone. Why? Because I want to know what I might face today. I want to be prepared for sunshine or rain, powdery snow or ice on the roads, clear skies or a tornado. I wish I had an app that would give me a different kind of forecast. I need an app that will give me the forecast for the real storms of my life: the storms in relationships, temptations, trouble at work, and the general chaos of the daily grind. Unfortunately, no such app exists. Instead, we typically put one foot in front of the other and slog through each day as it comes. But we don t have to live that way. We know two things for sure about the storms of life. 1. The storms of life are going to happen. 2. We are never alone, even when life assaults us with all of its brutality. I m glad you are going to take this journey with me. At times we may feel like asking, Where is God when life is hard? Storm Shelter will show us where God is when we need peace and protection. We are going to study a few psalms ancient worship songs and we will learn where God is and what God is doing in the middle of our storms. This study is more than just information about God. Storm Shelter is the opportunity to answer the question: Where do I go when life gets tough? Let s learn to live in the middle of the ancient lyrics, these wonderful psalms. We can be assured that God does show up personally in our lives, no matter what storm comes our way. He is our storm shelter. 3 10 SESSION 1
The Point God is with me no matter what I am facing. The Passage Psalm 23:1-6 The Bible Meets Life We need someone to stand with us when people disappoint us or even turn against us. We need to know we are not alone when we experience loss. Life gets us down from time to time, and we could use someone to walk through the experience with us. The Bible points us to God, who never disappoints or hurts us. He walks with us. We can discover that God provides what we need and strengthens us with His presence. The Setting David apparently composed this psalm in the midst of or reflecting back on a time when his enemies were close at hand and the outcome of the conflict was far from certain. The situation was severe enough David could have feared for his life, but instead, God s presence and goodness allowed him to say, I fear no danger (v. 4) This former shepherd could plainly see how the Great Shepherd guided, cared, and provided for him. BIBLE STUDIES FOR LIFE 11
What does the Bible say? Key Word Anoint (v. 5) The Hebrew term denotes the pouring of perfumed oil on a guest s head (Luke 7:46). Psalm 23:5 describes God honoring David as His special guest. Psalm 23:1-6 (HCSB) 1 The LORD is my shepherd; there is nothing I lack. 2 He lets me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. 3 He renews my life; He leads me along the right paths for His name s sake. 4 Even when I go through the darkest valley, I fear no danger, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Only goodness and faithful love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD as long as I live. 12 SESSION 1
THE POINT God is with me no matter what I am facing. GET INTO THE STUDY DISCUSS: Invite your group members to turn their attention to the image at the bottom of page 9 of the Personal Study Guide (PSG). Ask: What is the biggest storm you ve ever encountered? Note: Group members may answer with a literal storm or a figurative one. Allow time for each person to respond (a response now will encourage them to respond to other questions later in the study). RECAP THE PSG: Share with your group the author s experience: I knew what I wanted to say but my mouth simply would not cooperate. I thought, Why am I so tongue-tied? I must just be tired. But then after trying again to answer my wife s question, I found I was physically speechless. After a few frantic moments, the paramedics were called. It was all a blur from there. Sirens. Wheeling through the emergency room. Getting a CAT scan of my brain. Ultimately, the diagnosis was a transient ischemic attack (TIA), often called a mini-stroke (PSG, p. 10). 10 minutes TIP: Want more options for group discussion? Alternate discussion questions are now included in the sidebars of each session. Notes SAY: Disaster. Chaos. Loss. We ve all experienced the pain of those kinds of moments. No matter what you re facing, God is present. He doesn t offer some sterile room as a shelter during your storms. He is the shelter. GUIDE: Call the group s attention to The Point on page 10 of the PSG: God is with me no matter what I am facing. Explain that this key idea will drive your discussion (it appears at the top of each session page). ENHANCEMENT: Bring your group s attention to Pack Item #2, Storm Shelter poster, to introduce the topic of this six-week study. PRAY: Transition into the Bible study by praying for your group. As you do, thank God for His promised presence in our lives. Post Pack Item #1 to invite others to your study. Display Pack Item #2 to communicate the study topic. BIBLE STUDIES FOR LIFE 13
5 minutes STUDY THE BIBLE Psalm 23:1-3 Notes 1 The LORD is my shepherd; there is nothing I lack. 2 He lets me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. 3 He renews my life; He leads me along the right paths for His name s sake. READ: Ask a group member to read Psalm 23:1-3 aloud. ALTERNATE QUESTION: As our Shepherd, the Lord leads, provides for, and renews us. What does this truth mean for us as we face major life decisions? DISCUSS: Question 2 on page 12 of the PSG: When have you experienced God s guidance, provision, or renewal? GUIDE: Share with your group some of David s story. He grew up tending his father s flocks, thus gaining real insight into the relationship between a shepherd and his flock. In this psalm, David expressed just how God was his shepherd, providing guidance, rest, and food. RECAP: This passage reminds us of three things God does for us as our Shepherd. 1. He guides us. Life is filled with distractions and dangers. God desires to help us navigate through the toughness of life; in fact, He is present, guiding us so we will stay on course. When we are pulled and tempted to get off course or when we do wander off course His presence will guide us back onto the right paths (v. 3). The Shepherd is not just interested in our rescue but also our restoration. 2. He provides for us. A shepherd does more than just keep the sheep out of trouble; he also provides for their needs. God does the same for us. He is such a good Shepherd we will lack nothing. In the midst of life s needs, sorrows, and grief, God provides perfectly for us. 3. He renews us. The psalm refers to green pastures a place of rest and still waters a source of refreshment. Only God s presence in our lives leads us to these places of genuine refreshment (PSG, p. 12). TRANSITION: In the next verses David recognized God s presence and work even in times of danger and difficulty. 14 SESSION 1
THE POINT God is with me no matter what I am facing. Psalm 23:1-3 Commentary David grew up tending the flocks of his father, Jesse (1 Samuel 16:10-13). As a shepherd, David learned many important spiritual lessons. He saw how the sheep s survival depended on his faithful care of them. He also learned he could trust the Lord for his personal safety in the wilderness with the sheep when wild animals often threatened him and the flock (17:34-36). David also learned about the tender care sheep required as they depended on him to get them safely from place to place. Their lives were in his hands; they lived or died depending on David s leadership as a shepherd. Psalm 23 uses this shepherd imagery to proclaim profound truth about God s loving presence and care for His people. David s opening affirmation the LORD is my Shepherd sets the foundation for the psalm. The Lord was David s shepherd, and thus took responsibility for caring for and guiding David. Second, David knew he was not in charge; God was. God was present to lead David, and David needed to follow. God would get David where David needed to go and through the challenges he would face. Third, God would provide for David s needs, just as a shepherd provides for his sheep. God knew David s needs and would meet them. David affirmed God s presence and provision in the words there is nothing I lack. Fourth, God s presence meant God s protection. In ancient Israel, people who cared for the animals of others were responsible to the owners for those animals (Exodus 22:10-13). God would protect David just as shepherds protected sheep. The expression He lets me lie down stresses the Shepherd s leadership. The sheep only lie down where the shepherd directs. Their safety and well-being are always the shepherd s concern, and he knows what is best for them. Green pastures literally means pastures of vegetation, perhaps an area of relative plenty in the wilderness. To the non-shepherd, the wilderness seems barren, but the trained shepherd knows how to provide for his sheep there. Quiet waters again stresses the shepherd s care. Rushing waters would prove dangerous to sheep that are fairly clumsy by nature. The shepherd would either lead them to gently flowing waters or dam up a faster stream with stones to provide a pool for the sheep to drink from without fear. David saw in the shepherd s work a striking parallel to God s loving care for him. God walked with him and led him, guiding his life at every turn. He knew David s weaknesses and met David where he was. The words right paths can be translated paths of righteousness. Just as a shepherd led his sheep along the proper paths, so the Lord led David along the right paths. He knew where David needed to travel to fulfill the purpose He had prepared for him. Another path might be easier to navigate, but the shepherd would know which path would lead the sheep to their destination. He would take care to guide his flock on their way. BIBLE STUDIES FOR LIFE 15
10 minutes STUDY THE BIBLE Psalm 23:4-5 Notes 4 Even when I go through the darkest valley, I fear no danger, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. READ: Ask a group member to read Psalm 23:4-5 aloud. RECAP: As our Shepherd, God protects us. The psalmist put it this way: Even when I go through the darkest valley, I fear no danger. At times, we may feel like defenseless sheep wandering alone at the midnight hour. We can t see them, but we know predators are lurking in the shadows. It s in these very circumstances God is with us (PSG, p. 13). ALTERNATE QUESTION: How do we recognize and honor God s faithfulness in hard times? DISCUSS: Question 3 on page 13 of the PSG: What keeps us from sometimes recognizing God s presence? SUMMARIZE: God s presence in our lives offers the following gifts: Protection - The Hebrew word translated rod can refer to a club, an instrument of protection. Wild animals might see sheep as easy prey. Shepherds would have to fend them off with some kind of weapon. A shepherd s staff also often had a hook a bend in one end to enable the shepherd to lift a sheep out of a crevice or pit. Courage - Consider the dark valleys of life you must pass through. In many of them, there is really nothing you can do. It s in prayer connecting with the presence of God in our lives that we gain our courage. Victory - The imagery in verse 5 is one of celebration. The enemy is forced to watch as we celebrate. A huge banquet table is set before us and we re the honored guests at the festivities. God has set us apart unto Himself. When we dine with the King, our cup will overflow with more of God s abundance than we can ever consume. DISCUSS: Question 4 on page 14 of the PSG: How has God s presence in your life made you braver than you would be otherwise? 16 SESSION 1
THE POINT God is with me no matter what I am facing. Psalm 23:4-5 Commentary Verse 4 s opening words, even when I go through the darkest valley, reveal David s understanding that life was not easy. Many challenges and trials would come, and God did not necessarily spare him from those. Rather, He walked with David through those challenges and trials. His presence would comfort David, His protection would defend David, and His provision would satisfy David. Darkest valley literally can be translated the ravine of the shadow of death. The words denote a tight, narrow ravine; such ravines are common in Judah s wilderness. Ravines are extremely dangerous for a variety of reasons. A shepherd might slip and fall, leaving the sheep helpless and defenseless in the wilderness. Sheep could wander down the steep slope and fall into the ravine. Wild animals might lurk along the bottom of the canyon, waiting to attack those who fell in. Thieves and robbers could hide along the edge, looking to steal the shepherd s animals or money. The route from Jerusalem to Jericho a wilderness area for shepherds included a number of ravines. Despite these potential dangers, David knew that sometimes a dark valley contained the right path, and if so, he needed to navigate it carefully. God s presence did not preclude difficulty. Nevertheless, David affirmed I fear no danger as he went through life. The Hebrew word translated rod can refer to a club, an instrument of protection. Wild animals might see sheep as easy prey. Shepherds would have to fend them off with some kind of weapon. A shepherd s staff also often had a hook a bend in one end to enable the shepherd to lift a sheep out of a crevice or pit. Just as a shepherd s protection and care would comfort sheep, so God s loving care and protection comforted David. He knew God stood with him to protect and guide him. At this point in the psalm, the metaphor moves away from sheep and Shepherd to a picture of even greater intimacy a picture of close fellowship as David and God enjoyed a meal together. The Lord hosted the meal and would prepare a table so He and David could enjoy a meal. Such an arrangement presupposed a good level of security, though being in the presence of my enemies may not appear to suggest it. But God would protect him in every circumstance. Summer temperatures in the Judean wilderness often exceed 100 degrees. The humidity is quite low and one s skin can easily become dry. Even today, a host might anoint a guest s skin with oil. Combined with a gentle breeze, this would cool David s head and refresh him. My cup overflows indicates David had plenty to eat and drink. God treated David to a wonderful banquet, which suggests the abundance of God s blessing beyond the basics. In the Lord, David had all he would ever need, including complete security. 11 15 minutes STUDY THE BIBLE Psalm 23:6 Notes 6 Only goodness and faithful love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD as long as I live. DO: Post two tear sheets. On each one, write one of the questions from the activity on page 14 of the PSG. Display on a wall, the floor, or a table. Ask your group to consider areas of life that can be overwhelming, as well as how to surrender to God s guidance in that area. Allow time for group members to compile their ideas on each page. Discuss the responses with the whole group. (Have a large group? Consider dividing members into groups of 8-10 for this activity.) The Good Shepherd: What are some areas of your life that feel too big to go through alone? How can you give God control? READ: Ask a group member to read Psalm 23:6 aloud. RECAP: Psalm 23 is comforting because of what it tells us about God and what He will do on our behalf. David taught us in Psalm 23 to sing (or celebrate) that God s goodness and faithful love will come after us and they will be there for the rest of our lives. David said that God s goodness and faithful love will pursue me all the days of my life (PSG, p. 15). ALTERNATE QUESTION: How can we help one another feel more confident in God s love? DISCUSS: Question 5 on page 15 of the PSG: What does it mean to you that God s goodness and love pursue you? SUMMARIZE: In this psalm, the opening word only also means surely. David was not implying that he would never see hardship during life s journey. He would, however, always know the comfort of God s sustaining presence. David could depend on God s goodness at life s every turn. TRANSITION: God has this great desire for you that you will live with Him. God desires to be your Shepherd and protect you in the deep, dark valleys of life. It is by His presence that you gain a sense of hope and courage. And by His goodness, you dine at the King s table. Forever. 18 SESSION 1
THE POINT God is with me no matter what I am facing. Psalm 23:6 Commentary As David concluded the psalm, he continued to express confidence in his relationship with the Lord. The opening word only also means surely. David s words sound certain, extra affirming. David was not implying that he would never see hardship during life s journey. He would, however, always know the comfort of God s sustaining presence. David could count on God s goodness at life s every turn. David knew he likely would not consider everything that came his way as good, but he knew he could always count on the Good Shepherd to be good. David might not always understand God s perfect ways, but he knew that whatever life might bring, God remained good. The Hebrew word translated faithful love is a rich theological word. It describes all the blessings that come to us because we are God s children. In other contexts it is translated mercy, faithfulness, covenant love, loyalty, or grace. Goodness and faithful love are wonderful gifts of God. They would actively pursue David, just as they pursue believers today. God takes active steps in our lives so we will know His goodness and faithful love in every situation. This pursuit is best seen in how God provided salvation for us through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ and works in the lives of individuals to bring them into a personal relationship with Himself through faith in Christ. All the days of my life reflects David s confidence he could count on God s presence and protection as long as he lived. He had begun a relationship with the Lord early in his life. God never would abandon him or cease to provide for Him. The goodness and faithful love that pursued David all his days came from God and denoted God s active presence in David s life. David testified, I will dwell in the house of the LORD, a vivid picture of a deep relationship, like that between close friends. House of the LORD does not describe the temple; David s son Solomon built that after David s death (1 Kings 6 7). However, David had arranged for the ark of the Lord, the symbol of God s presence, to dwell in Jerusalem and he worshiped God there (2 Samuel 6:1-19). It is likely, however, that David was not intending a specific place. Rather, he used the term metaphorically to mean he would enjoy God s presence forever. In Psalm 27:4, David affirmed that close fellowship with the Lord was the one thing he desired more than anything else. Indeed, God s presence is what makes heaven heaven (Revelation 21:3-4). As long as I live literally means length of days. The phrase does not specifically refer to eternity, but God s covenant and commitment to us has no end. Some interpreters, therefore, suggest the last phrase of the psalm speaks of God s love and grace beyond this life into eternity itself. Indeed, the Bible teaches that eternal life begins when we come to know the Lord (John 17:3; Ephesians 1:13), so such an interpretation makes sense. As believers, dwelling in God s loving presence can be a constant in our lives, and in eternity our relationship with God will surpass anything we have ever known in this life (Revelation 21:1-4). BIBLE STUDIES FOR LIFE 19
5 minutes LIVE IT OUT Notes SAY: The psalmist declared the nearness of God. As our Shepherd, His guidance, protection, and provision are promised. Want a closer look at how He works in our lives? Start here. GUIDE: Lead group members to consider the responses to the Bible study listed on page 16 of the PSG. Acknowledge the areas in your life where you need God s presence. Take time to pray for sensitivity to God s leadership. Review. Discuss with your group the times in your life when you have seen God bring victory out of turmoil. Share. Use Psalm 23 to introduce the idea of God s pursuing presence to a friend who is not yet a believer in Christ. Wrap It Up SAY: The author concluded this session with these words: My mini-stroke and health problems were temporary. After 18 months of doctors visits and treatments, I am back to my normal self. But in all that, I took shelter in the presence of God. In the unexpected moments of life, let God s loving presence be your shelter. 20 SESSION 1

Well-Placed Confidence I tell you, Peter, He said, the rooster will not crow today until you deny three times that you know Me! (Luke 22:34). The words must have hung in the air, pointed and powerful. The disciples had just been arguing about who was to be the greatest in Jesus kingdom. With Peter in the middle of the fray, Jesus words cut to the heart. To continue reading Well-Placed Confidence from HomeLife magazine, visit BibleStudiesforLife.com/articles.
