2 1 Corinthians 3:10-12 According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver,

3 1 Corinthians 3:12-15 precious stones, wood, hay, straw each one s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. 6 Skilled (sophos) Wise, skilled, learned, experienced

7 master builder (architektōn) From which we get our word architect, but it speaks more of the builder than the designer. General contractor.

10 About the Foundation For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ (3:11)

13 1 Peter 2:5-8 You yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house For it stands in Scripture: Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone, and A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense. 14 About the Materials Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw (3:12)

15 It Matters How You Build Motives matter Giving under compulsion = wood. Giving with compassion & a cheerful heart = gold. Singing to gain admiration = hay. Singing to glorify God = silver. Serving out of pressure = straw. Serving God by serving others = precious stone

16 It Matters How You Build Motives matter Activities matter You can invest your time in things that are good, evil, or just worthless.

17 It Matters How You Build Motives matter Activities matter Using our giftedness matters Sometimes we do what is good at the expense of what is great.

18 About the Inspection Each one s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If anyone s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire (3:13-15)

19 Examples From The Sermon on the Mount Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. (Mt 6:1, 5, ESV)

21 About the Building Do you not know that you are God s temple and that God s Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God s temple, God will destroy him. For God s temple is holy, and you are that temple (3:16-17)
