Ten Commandment Day 1 st and 4 th Grade April 28, 2013 Our 4 th grade students will be helping the 1 st graders learn about the Ten Commandments through some interactive games and activities. The 4 th grade classes will be presenting the Echo Pantomime as a whole group to the entire 1 st grade in the aux gym. Following the echo pantomime, each 1 st grade class will rotate through 3 stations that will be manned by one of the 4 th grade classes. Each game is summarized below as well as detailed instructions that follow in the plan. Please take a few minutes to practice the echo pantomime each week so that the children are familiar with the story and the hand motions, as well as the game your class will be responsible for. WHOLE GROUP ECHO PANTOMIME Choose about 5 students to be your leaders who will stand up in front of the group and lead the hand motions. The Teacher will read the pantomime and students will echo back the words and hand motions. During the actual presentation, each Commandment will be written on a laminated tablet that the 4 th graders can hold up to show the 1 st graders. Each class will have approximately 3 commandments to hold up during the presentation. CLIMB UP MT. SINAI GAME (9:00 Sharpton/Mihelick 10:45 Miller ) For practice day, a small version of the game is provided. There will be 3 stations. Divide students so that several can stand at each cone The top cone will be where the 4 th graders hold the stickers. Have your students practice by pretending to be the 1 st graders and volunteers and run through the game. I ve given you 2 sets of labels to practice 2 dry runs. TEN COMMANDMENTS DICE GAME (9:00 McGregor/Roth 10:45 McHugh/Weisbecker) You will be provided a set of foam dice and index card with copies of the commandments on them. During the actual game with the 1 st graders you will split the students so that
you have 3 teams at 3 different stations. This is also how you should split up your 4 th grade helpers. Review the rules with the students so they know what each roll means, especially if the student rolls doubles. Practice the game in your class. MAKE YOUR OWN TEN COMMANDMENTS (9:00 Wachtel/Canale 10:45 Sobieski/Pardee) Your students will be allowed to make their own Ten Commandment scroll out of the parchment paper You can use these scrolls as examples next week to give the 1 st graders ideas on what they can write. You can tear the sides of the paper to make it look more like a scroll 4 th graders can help the first graders next week tear the paper on the sides, crumble it to make it look wrinkled and tie up the scroll with ribbon Return the scrolls to my desk so that we can have them for next week s event. PLEASE RETURN ALL SUPPLIES TO MY DESK Once schedule of 1 st grade rotations are made, it will be distributed to you.
The Ten Commandments An Echo Pantomime Today, we are going to do an echo pantomime to tell the story about how God gave us The Ten Commandments to live by. As I read the story, you echo back the story and the hand motions. Thousands and Thousands of years ago, God s people, the Israelites, were slaves in Egypt. (Wave hands off to side representing a long time ago) Their Slave Masters were cruel and worked them very hard(make a mean face and punch fist into other hand) The Israelites cried out to God for help(cup hands around mouth pretending to yell) So God sent Moses to save them(raise hands towards heaven and wave down towards you) Moses said to King Pharaoh, let my people go! (Point and wave finger) King Pharaoh was a stubborn king and refused to obey God(Shake head and wave hands NO ) So God punished King Pharaoh for not freeing his people(cover mouth with hands acting scared) God sent frogs and flies to cover the land(hop like a frog) All the fish died(make hands look like fish and pretend to die) The people became very sick(cough and hold stomach) Finally, King Pharaoh told his people to GO (Wave off to show people leaving) So, Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt (Turn and march as if you re leaving) They camped at the bottom of Mt. Sinai(build a tent with your hands) On the 3 rd day, there was thunder and lightning, and a loud trumpet blast(pretend to blow a trumpet with your hands) God spoke to Moses and his people and gave them rules to live by: (cup hands around mouth pretending to yell) These are the Ten Commandments(Hold up 10 fingers) HOLD UP POSTERS ONE AT A TIME AFTER EACH COMMANDMENT IS READ #1: I am the Lord, your God; you shall not have strange Gods before me. #2: You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
#3: Remember to keep holy the Lord s Day. #4: Honor your father and your mother. #5: You shall not kill. #6 : You shall not commit adultery. #7: You shall not steal. #8: You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. #9 You shall not covet your neighbor s wife #10: You shall not covet your neighbor s goods. God promised to love and watch over the Israelites if they obeyed the ten commandments(pretend to hug self) THE END Bible Game: Climb Up Mount Sinai (Aux Gym 9:00 Sharpton/Mihelick, 10:45 Miller) Supplies: o 3 poster board tablets for each class o Sets of ten commandment stickers This game will remind the players that God told Moses to climb up to the top of Mount Sinai to give him the Ten Commandments. Students will have to remember one of the ten commandments in order to receive the tablet and return to the bottom of the mountain. Set up: There will be 3 stations set up in the aux gym. 2 cones will be set up at each station. A 4 th Grader will be sitting at the top cone(top of Mount Sinai) with copies of the ten commandment labels. How To Play: Divide the 1 st grade class into 3 teams. Have the teams line up at the bottom of the mountain. At the "GO", the first player from each team must hop to the top of Mt. Sinai and tell the 4 th grade volunteer one of the ten commandments. If they get it correct, the volunteer will place the commandment sticker on their tablet. If the first grader is struggling to remember a commandment, the 4 th grader can try and help by giving an example or scenario that would represent the commandment. Once the 1 st grader gets a commandment, they can then hop back down the mountain to hand the tablet to the next player on their
team. Player goes to the back of the team line and sits down. The next player carries the tablet back to the top of the mountain and names another commandment that has not been named. Then they hop back down the mountain to tag the next player. Play continues like this until all the players have raced to the top, named all the commandments, and returned with the tablet to the bottom of the mountain. How To Win: The first team to have all their players hop to the top of Mount Sinai, return with the tablet complete with all ten commandments and sit down, is the winner! Ten Commandments Dice Game (Lobby 9:00 McGregor/Roth 10:45 McHugh/Weisbecker) WHAT YOU WILL NEED: 1. 2 Die - large foam dice will be provided. 2. Playing Cards - One of the 10 Commandments will be written on an individual card, the large Numeral, corresponding to the Commandment, will be written on the opposite side. 3. Use one (1) set of cards per Team. 4. One Master Sheet - complete written set of the 10 Commandments. The 4 th grade volunteers can reference to check the attempts made to recite the Commandment. OBJECT OF THE GAME: TO PLAY: Split your class into 3 teams. Give each team a set of dice and Commandment Cards 1. Have the 4 th graders set up a Display Area with a set of Commandment Cards in numerical order (with the Numeral side up) in front of each opponent. 2. The opponents will alternate turns(they can work as individuals or teams). The 2 die are thrown, at the same time, making a combination that will correlate with the number of the Commandment. For example, if a 4 and a 3 are thrown, the student needs to try and guess the 7 th commandment. NOTE: The eleven (11) combination of the die (6+5=11), will represent Commandment # 1. An easy way to remember this 6+5 rule is: 1 - God and 1st Commandment = 1and 1) --- But remember that the 2 die that are thrown that add up to 2 (1 on each separate dice) - is Commandment #2.
3. A Double 6 combination is considered WILD. The Team or Player that rolls this combination may select any Commandment that they have not already earned in attempt to add it to their collection. 4. If other Double Sets of Numbers are thrown in combination - [2s (=4), 3s (=6), 4s (=8), or 5s (=10)], the Team Member or Player receives an additional roll of the die, and an additional attempt to recite/earn another Commandment Card. 5. If the Team Member correctly recites the Commandment without reading it from the card - they EARN the Commandment Card. 6. When a Commandment Card is earned, it is removed from the Commandment Number Card Display Area - and stacked to the side - Number side up. 7. If the Player is unable to correctly recite the Commandment - the card is turned over (written words face up), read aloud, and then placed back into the Display Area - face down again (Number side up). 8. The team or player who earns the most Commandment Cards wins the game. Make Your Own Ten Commandments (Cafeteria 9:00 Wachtel/Canale 10:45 Sobieski/Pardee) Have the 4 th grade students review the Ten Commandments from the poster with the first graders. Ask them to choose one of the commandments that they think is most meaningful or important. Tell them they are going to write what the commandment means in their own words and then draw a picture. Show examples of scrolls that have already been completed by 4 th graders. Using markers, have the 1 st grader write out commandment on parchment paper in their own words. Make sure they let the writing dry a few minutes so words don t smear. The 4 th graders can help write these out if needed. When complete, have the 1 st grader bring their parchment poster to a 4 th grader who can help tear sides of parchment paper to look like a scroll. They can also crumble the paper up to give it an old authentic look. Have 4 th Grader roll up scroll and tie with ribbon.
The Ten Commandments 1 I am the Lord, your God; you shall not have strange gods before Me (Love nothing or no one more than Me) 2 You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain (Use God s name with respect) 3 Remember to keep holy the LORD S Day 4 Honor your father and your mother 5 You shall not kill 6 You shall not commit adultery (Respect married life. Husbands and wives should be true to one another) 7 You shall not steal 8 You shall not bear false witness against your Neighbor (Tell the Truth) 9 You shall not covet your neighbor s wife (Respect your neighbors and your friends) 10 You shall not covet your neighbor s goods (Be happy with what you have. Don t be jealous of what s others have)
