Coromandel East, South Australia TO KNOW the mind and the will of God, and to participate in it ourselves, we need to have the Spirit which is from God, for 'no one comprehends what is truly God's except the Spirit that is from God' ( Corinthians :). We also need to be soaked in God's revelation of Himself in the holy Scriptures, the sacred writings that are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus' ( Timothy 3:5), in which 'men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God' ( Peter :). We need to know the whole of the Scriptures from beginning to end. We need to absorb them prayerfully, so they become part of the fibre of our being. We need to be able to look out on the world from inside the Scriptures through their amazing God-given perspective. We need to read and re-read the Bible. This is especially true for those ordained or appointed to positions of leadership in the church, devoted 'to prayer and to serving the word' (Acts 6:4). The Anglican Prayer Book asks its clergy to 'be diligent in Prayers, and in reading of the holy Scriptures'. Forms of Morning and Evening Prayer are given there, for daily use throughout the year, with tables of Psalms and readings from the Old and New Testaments which yearly traverse the whole Bible. All Priests and Deacons are bidden 'to say daily the Morning and Evening Prayer either privately or openly, not being let [hindered] by sickness, or some other urgent cause', so that 'by daily reading and weighing of the Scriptures, ye may wax riper and stronger in your Ministry' (The Ordering of Priests, and Concerning the Service of the Church, in The Book of Common Prayer, 66). From the time of my training in theological college over thirty years ago, this habitual practice of morning and evening prayer, for which I am eternally grateful, has been a mainstay of my ministry. No less is this important and valuable for all Christian people. The Prayer Book goes on: 'And the Curate that ministereth in every Parish-Church or Chapel, being at home, and not being otherwise reasonably hindered, shall say the same in the Parish-Church or Chapel where he ministereth, and shall cause a Bell to be tolled thereunto a convenient time before he begin, that the people may come to hear God's Word, and to pray with him'. In these days, the sound of the bell would be drowned out by the traffic. Nor is it as easy these days for the people, if they heard the bell, to leave what they are doing to come together each day for this purpose. Nevertheless, the principle of daily prayerful reading through the Scriptures remains valid for all, together or individually. Recently-produced lectionaries have become increasingly selective, in what would appear to be an arbitrary fashion, but in ways which could encourage people to disregard elements that may be felt to be uncongenial to the modem mind. This is dangerous, and can do great harm to God's church, for it makes us, with our tiny minds and changing preferences, the final arbiters of the word of God. We must be wary of downgrading any part of the Scriptures, such as the genealogical sections, alongside any other. I know of one Aboriginal community in Australia that was electrified by the translation of the genealogy in Matthew. This, for them, with their strong sense of ongoing family relationships, was what authenticated the gospel as true, and true to life. These and other passages are all included in this lectionary, alongside the rest. What 'the Spirit of Christ' has seen fit to include in holy Scripture (see Peter :0-), we do well to read with respect and interest, to our profit.

4 This lectionary, based on the scheme of The One Year Bible (published in various versions by Tyndale House Publishers, Inc. Wheaton, Illinois), reads right through the Canonical Books of the Old and New Testaments in a whole year. The readings are divided into daily morning and evening portions, and can be used with or without set forms of prayer. The Psalms are arranged to be prayed through four times in the year (verse numbers in brackets refer to the numbering of verses in The Liturgical Psalter as used in An Australian Prayer Book 978 and A Prayer Book for Australia 995, where this differs from the normal Bible numbering, for those who may be using these versions). The Proverbs are appropriately divided into small daily portions, which can be used in the morning or the evening, or in the middle of the day. (No provision is made for the observance of festivals or special days. These may be recognised by use of a collect or prayer of the day, and in any eucharistic celebrations.) In looking up the references, the number before the colon is the chapter number, and the numbers after the colon are the smaller verse numbers. So Proverbs :-6 is Proverbs chapter verses to 6 inclusive, and Genesis :-:3 is Genesis chapter verse through to the end of chapter verse 3. It is helpful to place separate markers in your Bible in the appropriate positions each day to mark where you are up to. Whether used with set forms of prayer or not, the reading should be done as being in the presence of God-Father, Son and Holy Spirit-and time should be given to enable parts of what is read to be turned to prayer. I conclude by quoting certain principles from the Anglican Articles of Religion, the consistent application of which over a number of years has wonderfully opened for me vast vistas of the magnificence of God's actions of love through the ages, and of my own place in that, which otherwise might have remained closed to me: Holy Scripture containeth all things necessary to salvation: so that whatsoever is not read therein, nor may be proved thereby, is not to be required of any man, that it should be believed as an article of the Faith, or to be thought requisite or necessary to salvation. (VI) The Old Testament is not contrary to the New: for both in the Old and New Testament everlasting fife is offered to Mankind by Christ, who is the only Mediator between God and Man, being both God and Man. (VII) It is not lawful for the Church to ordain any thing that is contrary to God's Word written, neither may so expound one place of Scripture, that it be repugnant to another.
