Isaiah Meanwhile Back in Israel Isaiah 9:8-10:4 Dr. McGee introduces these verses this way: The remainder of the chapter, verses 8-21, covers the local situation in Isaiah s day and will be partially fulfilled in the immediate future, but it also looks forward to the time of the Great Tribulation for a full and final fulfillment. God will continue to punish this nation and all nations that have turned their backs on Him, until He comes again. Modern men don t like to hear this they would rather listen to something comforting. Check your history books and see what happened to Israel and other nations who left God out. They have had a sad sordid story, and I am afraid that you and I live in a nation that is getting ripe for judgment. If we escape, we will be the only nation in the history of the world that has escaped. 1 Is Dr. McGee right on his assertion that Isaiah is speaking not just of Israel, but the Tribulation? I don t know. Is he correct in his assessment of history and our future? Possibly. But what is the more important lesson for us in the study of Isaiah? God is a loving and merciful God who has been merciful to humanity in general and to us specifically in the provision of His Son. And yes, the Tribulation is coming, but there are many around us who are experiencing their own personal tribulation. And the only answer for them is repentance, forgiveness and salvation. The message of Isaiah is God is righteous and will judge, but He will judge only those who reject His love and mercy. I Introduction II The Arrogance of Samaria Verses 8-12 III The Judgment of the Leadership Verses IV Wickedness Leads to Judgment Verses V Corruption Leads to Corruption Verses 1-4 VI Conclusion I Introduction: Yes, Isaiah has brought a message of hope for Judah, for Ahaz. Although Ahaz doesn t seem particularly interested. A child was going to be born. David s throne would be protected. Israel would be restored. The Messianic kingdom is coming. But, what about the current situation? Judah is still threatened by the Syria/Israeli alliance. And even though Ahaz was rejecting God s assistance, God was still angry with Israel and she was still going to be judged. It seems like people just don t listen to what God has to say. 1 McGee, J. Vernon, Thru the Bible with J. Vernon McGee, Vol. 3, Isaiah, Thomas Nelson Inc., Nashville, TN 1982, p. 222.

He [the rich man] answered, Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father s house, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment. Abraham replied, They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them. No, father Abraham, he said, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent. He said to him, If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead. (Luke 16:27-31). While truth may set people free, it only does so if they want to hear truth. And it appears Israel wasn t interested in truth. Now they face judgment. Would Judah listen to truth? And do we learn from the history of others? for those who don t listen to history are condemned to repeat it. (For the historical fulfillment of these verses see Nehemiah, Chapter 9). Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come (1 Corinthians 10:6, 11). Each section of this passage ends with the same phrase and so, although 10:1-4 begins with a woe as in the following verses, since it ends as do the three sections in Nine, we will consider it here. Verses 8-10: Ephraim, which was one of Israel s largest tribes, and was often used to represent the entire northern kingdom. Samaria was the capital of Israel. And so Israel is used as a good example of the consequences of not listening when God speaks. The reason Isaiah is warning of the coming fall of Israel (in 722 B.C.) is to put Judah on notice that the nation better not continue to ignore his warnings to them. God had warned Israel of the costs of disobedience. And once again he warns them. But what is interesting here is at the same time He warns of coming judgment, He notes the attitudes of these people. God quotes Israel as believing the current situation as temporary. This was simply the result of living in an ugly world. But, they would rebuild and Israel would become a greater people than ever. Verses 11-12: But this would not be the case, for Israel would soon be facing enemies. There is some disagreement over the inclusion of the name Rezin here, but he was the King of Aram and their ally. The nation was soon to understand the truth that while one may experience benefits from a political alliance, here there were also dangers. The danger was Israel had gained the enemies of Aram. Who were the foes of Aram? They would have included other Arameans, the east, and Philistines, the west. They may also have been Assyrians who were enemies of Israel, and questionable allies of Judah. These enemies would eat up the Israelites. Finally, the section ends with a phrase repeated thrice more in these verses. Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised. ) 118 (

God s anger will not be appeased until the nation returns to Him. And again, this is why Isaiah speaks to Israel here, as a warning to Judah, You had better learn from Israel s fall before it is to late for you. Verses 13-17: Even here though we find a reminder that Israel is God s and His purpose is their restoration to Him. The Israelites are His children. There I will give her back her vineyards, and will make the Valley of Achor a door of hope. There she will sing as in the days of her youth, as in the day she came up out of Egypt. For the Israelites will live many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred stones, without ephod or idol. Afterward the Israelites will return and seek the LORD their God and David their king. They will come trembling to the LORD and to his blessings in the last days (Hosea 2:15; 3:4-5). Up to this point though, God s judgment has not led to contrition or repentance in the nation of Israel. As a result, His judgment will fall, and first it will descend on the leadership because they have the responsibility for the general degradation of the nation. This leadership was made up of both governmental and spiritual leaders. The spiritual leaders in this case were the prophets, the ones who were supposed to speak for God to Israel. Finally God s judgment was going to fall on all, even those who are generally considered the helpless and oppressed. This is national judgment and none were to escape. The sense here is those who do not speak up for God in effect speak against Him. With rebellion against God, ungodliness, comes wickedness. The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness (Romans 1:18). So once again we are told even this judgment was not adequate. Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised. Verses 18-21: Sin spreads like wild fire. And God s cleansing judgment then burns away all evil. And so Israel falls to enemies from the outside and civil war from within. Grogan explains it this way. the prophet described the attacks made on Israel by her external enemies. From the end of v.19, the more terrible picture of civil war takes over. A study of OT history from the time of the judges reveals many examples of strife within the nation. The tribes of Manasseh and Ephraim should have been particularly close to each other, for they were both descendants of the sons of Joseph (Gen 48). The first civil war in Israel, however, was fought between the Gileadites of Manasseh and the men of Ephraim in the days of Jephthah (Judg 12:1-6). Men who would not unite through a common sympathy were sometimes joined together to pour out their hatred and jealousy against Judah. Both the earlier and later contexts (i.e., v.18-19, 21b) suggest that this civil strife was to be viewed as a judgment from God. 2 The men of Ephraim called out their forces, crossed over to Zaphon and said to Jephthah, Why did you go to fight the Ammonites without calling us to go with you? We re going to burn down your house over your head. 2 Grogan, Geoffrey W., The Expositor s Bible Commentary, Isaiah, Zondervan Interactive Publishing House, Grand Rapids, MI, ) 119 (

Jephthah answered, I and my people were engaged in a great struggle with the Ammonites, and although I called, you didn t save me out of their hands. When I saw that you wouldn t help, I took my life in my hands and crossed over to fight the Ammonites, and the LORD gave me the victory over them. Now why have you come up today to fight me? Jephthah then called together the men of Gilead and fought against Ephraim. The Gileadites struck them down because the Ephraimites had said, You Gileadites are renegades from Ephraim and Manasseh. The Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan leading to Ephraim, and whenever a survivor of Ephraim said, Let me cross over, the men of Gilead asked him, Are you an Ephraimite? If he replied, No, they said, All right, say Shibboleth. If he said, Sibboleth, because he could not pronounce the word correctly, they seized him and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. Forty-two thousand Ephraimites were killed at that time (Judges 12:1-6). And so repentance doesn t come, but judgment does. But without repentance the judgment obviously isn t enough Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised. Verses 1-4: With wickedness in the land, corruption leads to corruption. And even in biblical times, it seems as if lawyers are perceived as one of the best examples of corruption. While the oppressed may suffer under God s hand of judgment, a symptom of the wickedness of Israel is those who were to protect the helpless have become their abusers. But these who abuse will find themselves just prisoners among prisoners, or dead among the dead when the Assyrians finally move into the land. None of this was necessary. But the Israelites were unrepentant. And so they had yet to learn their lesson. Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised. And three times, no four, God says his anger will not be turned away. This is what the Lord says: For three sins of Israel, even for four, I will not turn back [my wrath]. They sell the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals. They trample on the heads of the poor as upon the dust of the ground and deny justice to the oppressed. Father and son use the same girl and so profane my holy name (Amos 2:6-7). Oswalt closes this section this way: So for all these offenses against God pride, false leadership, devouring one s brothers, oppression of the poor the divine hand is outstretched. It is not Assyria s overwhelming power which dictates the future of Ephraim and Judah; it is their failure to submit to God and to live in accordance with his principles. It is that failure which will destroy them. God is with us for good or ill. We will either live in the glory of that fact or die by smashing ourselves against it. The Assyrians of this world do not hold the balances: God does, and the Assyrians are weighted with the rest of us. 3 3 Oswalt, John N., The New International Commentary on the Old Testament, The Book of Isaiah, In Two Volumes, William B. Eerdman s Publishing Company, Grand Rapids, MI, 1986, p ) 120 (

Conclusion: There are two major points I want to take from this passage. For God s people arrogance leads to destruction. But even God s judgment is merciful and is intended to bring restoration. Nobody says discipline is comfortable. But the heavy hand of God is intended to be a hand of restoration. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees (Hebrews 12:11-12). The problem outlined in this passage is arrogance. Arrogance doesn t believe it will be disciplined. It believes it will escape. It is arrogance against God which leads to rebellion and self-deceit. And we can find this arrogance in both believers and non-believers. This arrogance is first seen in the self-confidence of Israel instead of God-confidence. Israel believed she could do it her way. Even as believers we can fall into the trap of believing we know what is best for ourselves. Sometimes it isn t because we don t trust God, it is worse than that. It is because we don t think of going to Him. We just naturally respond by acting before we think. God wants us to turn to Him, trusting the truth that He knows what is best. He is the Creator who died for us. Who better to trust with our lives than the One who gave them to us? Next, arrogance was manifested in the pride of the leadership which believes it is accountable to no one, least of all God. Sadly, we have seen this in some of the leadership in Christendom. Men who believe their views, values and positions are more important than the teaching of God s words. They are more concerned with having things their way than by what damage they do to God s people. But whether they accept it or not, one day they will stand before God, accountable for their arrogance. But we are accountable to God and this is a blessing, not a curse, for He is the one who will keep us on the right past. He is the One who conforms us to the image of His Son. Finally, arrogance leads to oppression. When people aren t answerable to God, when they are in leadership and are not answerable to those they lead, they finally become the oppressors. But remember these are God s people, so God will humble them. He will take their arrogance and one day they will return to Him. And so God s heavy hand on His own is because He loves, and to destroy the body to save the soul is an appropriate choice. We started by saying that truth can set us free, but that doesn t mean it will. Israel had the truth, and truth was God was going to judge them for rejecting His truth. God s truth set us free to salvation, and God s truth can keep us from choosing the wrong path in this world. Truth sets us free from the ugliness of the past and the wrong choices in the present. The truth sets us free. The lost can be given the truth and it will either set them free or it will be used to judge them. God is the source of Truth, but we are to be the conveyers of that truth. ) 121 (

Jesus said, If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. (John 8:31-32). May we be providers of the Truth and may the Holy Sprit continue to use it to set men free. Let us be open to give the truth to all who cross our path. Let us say with the song writer: Come, every soul by sin oppressed There s mercy with the Lord, And He will surely give you rest By trusting in His Word. For Jesus shed His precious blood, Rich blessings to bestow; Plunge now into the crimson flood That washes white as snow. Yes, Jesus is the Truth, the Way, That leads you into rest; Believe in Him without delay And you are fully blest. Only trust Him; only trust Him Only trust Him now. He will save you; He will save you. He will save you now. 4 4 Stockton, John H., The Celebration Hymnal, Only Trust Him, Word/Integrity, Waco, TX, 1997, #480. ) 122 (
