1 1 st 4 th Grade Teacher Guide Malachi the Prophet Bible Passage: Malachi 1 4 Main Point: God will honor those who honor Him. Memory Verse: 1st Sam 2:30B I will honor those who honor me. But I will take honor away from those who do not honor me. 3:45 4:00 CHECK IN / SNACKS / GAMES: One teacher take control of sign-in: One nametag will go on the child, another will go on the clipboard, and one will be used for checkout. Just place the Pick Up sticker on the clipboard to check the child out. If someone is new to the church or not in our database, they can fill out a guest tag. Please make sure that you get their phone number in case we need to contact them and any special instructions for the care of their child. One teacher lead orderly free play. 4:00 4:10 ACTIVITY SHEET / ARRIVING ACTIVITY: Activity Sheet: Distribute activity pages and instruct the kids to complete the challenge. (The challenge is located on the back of the coloring sheet.) INTRO ACTIVITY: Ready or not! Show the kids a selected item a marble, a coin, or so forth. Choose one kid to be It. Explain that It will stand in the corner with her eyes covered and count to 20. As It counts, give the item to a kid and encourage him to quietly hide it behind his back or under his legs. When It finishes counting, she should call out, Ready or not, here I come! Then It will turn around and take three guesses as to who has the item. Reveal where the item is hidden. Then choose another kid to be It and play again. Say In today s Bible story, Malachi brought the people an important message from God. Malachi also told about another messenger God would send. This messenger, John the Baptist, would call people to repent too. He would get them ready for a final Messenger, Jesus. Jesus would bring good news of salvation. We can read the New Testament and learn about John the Baptist. He did get people ready for Jesus, and Jesus did bring good news. Jesus died on the cross and rose again so that those who trust in Him would be forgiven and have eternal life. 4:10 4:15 CLEAN UP / GO OVER RULES & CONSEQUENCES: Respect the Leaders Respect Others Respect the Property 4:15 4:50 KIDS LIVE: Have the kids sit together. Keep an eye on them and watch the door for more kids. 4:50 5:00 CRAFT: Craft: Hidden message Items needed: Clothespin. Paper. Instructions: (1)Provide each kid with a spring-hinged wooden clothespin and 2-by-1-inch piece of paper.2) Demonstrate how to fold the paper lengthwise in the middle. 3) Write God love in very small letters just to the top of the fold. 4) Open the clothespin and insert the piece of paper a little over half way into the clothespin. 5) Gospel Project Unit 18.6

2 The message should be hidden. 6) If the kids wrote too big, give them another strip of paper to try again. 7) Fold the excess paper over the edges and top and bottom. 8) Use markers to color the clothespin and the paper on the outside of the clothespin. 9) They may also choose to draw an envelope on the piece of paper when the clothespin is closed. Say: God will honor those who honor Him. 5:10 5:20 REVIEW & APPLICATION QUESTIONS Review Questions: Family Feud Style Game (Items Needed: Buzzer) Divide the group into two teams. Have one person from each team come to the Check-In desk with the buzzer on it. Tell them to put their hands behind their back until you ask the question. The first person to hit the buzzer gets to answer the question. If the team answers the question correctly, they get 10 points. If they answer incorrectly, the other team can steal the points. For each question, pick a new person on the team to answer the question. The goal is to give every child the opportunity to be asked a question. What is the last book in the Old Testament? (Malachi) How long did the Israelites spend in exile? (70 years, Jer. 29:10) In our Bible story today, who was God s messenger to the Israelites? (Malachi, Mal. 1:1) What kinds of animals did the priests offer as sacrifices? (stolen, lame, or sick animals; Mal. 1:8) What was the priests job? (They were to lead the people by teaching them about God, Mal. 2:7) What did God promise to do if the people willingly offered back to God what they had? (He would bless them, Mal. 3:10) Who was the prophet that Malachi said would come to announce the Messiah? (John the Baptist, Mal. 3:1) Malachi said that on the Day of the Lord, those who honor God will playfully jump like what animal? (calves, Mal. 4:2) What did God tell His people to do? (God told His people to repent and get ready for Jesus, Mal. 3:7) Say: God will honor those who honor Him. 5:20 5:25 MEMORY VERSE: Review with the entire group. Use the Memory Verse sheet located in the teacher aid section of the bin. Psalm 119:9 How can a young person live a pure life? Lesson: Go over Classroom Rules: Play the Intro-Video Timeline View: God will honor those who honor him and is always faithful even when we are not. In our Bible story, we will hear how God s people did not honor Him. They had become lazy in how they worshiped God, but God did not abandon them. As you hear the story, listen for the ways that God will honor those who honor Him. Main Point: That leads us to our main point: God will honor those who honor Him. Show the Main Point Everyone say that with me (Have them repeat the MAIN Point) Very interesting! Let s take a look at how he did this! Bible Story: Play the Bible Story Video: God Loves His people. In the story today, the Israelites had forgotten God s love for them. God protected the Israelites from all of their enemies but they still had trials and sufferings. They had gone through some really hard times and stopped focusing on God s blessings and started focusing on their own problems. This didn t lead to anything good; the Priests stopped offering their best animals and started sacrificing bling, lame, and sick animals instead. God wanted their best but they were withholding that from God. God warned His people that if they didn t change, He would punish them. He told the priests that He had already been punishing them. However, God also told them that if they trusted Him He would bless them abundantly (Malachi 3:10-12). God wants our best. Sometimes when things don t make since, it is easy to take our focus off of God; however, that never leads to a good thing. God has blessed us so much and He wants us to praise Him though the hard times. We need to wait for God when things don t make since because that is where we get out strength (Isaiah 40:31). God Honors those who Honor Him. The Israelites needed to trust, praise, obey and wait. Malachi was a messenger a prophet who told God s people to repent. Malachi also told about another messenger God would send. This messenger, John the Baptist, would call people to repent and get them ready for a final Messenger, Jesus Christ. 8 Let s watch our discussion starter video and see what it might have to do with our story. Play the Discussion Starter Video: Why do you think the kids wanted to play near the bridge even though it was not allowed? Would they have stopped playing if they knew a parent was nearby? Why or why not? Have you ever been caught doing something you weren t supposed to be doing? Why do you think God wants us to stop sinning? How do we show God that we are sorry for our sin? Show Memory Verse: Repeat after me 1st Sam 2:30B I will honor those who honor me. But I will take honor away from those who do not honor me. Show Main Point: Let s review our Main Point one more time. God will honor those who honor Him. (Have them repeat the MAIN Point!) Dismiss kids to class:

9 Bible Story: Video Malachi the Prophet Malachi 1 4 The Jewish people had returned to the promised land, and they were ready for God to bless them. The people waited, but nothing happened. Sometimes their lives were hard, and they wondered if God really loved them. The people became lazy in how they worshiped God. The Lord loved His people, and He wanted them to be holy. He wanted them to obey Him completely. So God sent a message to His people through the prophet Malachi (MAL uh kigh). God s message told the people about their sins and called them to turn back to Him. The priests had disobeyed God. They were supposed to lead the people in worship, but instead of offering God the best animal sacrifices, the priests offered animals that were stolen, lame, or sick. God said, I m not pleased. I will not accept your offerings. God also said to the priests, It is your job to help people follow Me; they look to you for instruction. But you have turned them away from Me. You taught them wrong things. God warned the people that a day of judgment is coming when God will punish sin and reward righteousness. God said, I am going to send My messenger, and he will clear the way before Me. The messenger would have a very important job: to get the people ready for God s promised Messiah. Next, God talked about some of the wrong things the people were doing. You are robbing Me! God said. The people were not offering to God a share of their wealth. But everything they had was a gift from God. Bring a tenth of your wealth to Me, God said. And test Me! See if I will not give you even more blessings more than you can count! Some of the people were saying things about God that weren t true. It is useless to serve God, the people said. People who live however they want to are better off than we are. But other people did honor God, and God noticed them. They will be Mine, God said. I will have compassion on them. He said, A day is coming when everyone who is wicked will be destroyed. But those who honor Me will go out and playfully jump like calves. Malachi told the people to be patient. God had not forgotten about them. Life was not easy, but if they served God and followed Him, they would be happy on the day when God would keep His promise to rescue His people. Christ Connection: Malachi was a messenger a prophet who told God s people to repent. Malachi also told about another messenger God would send.
