3 Expecting the King to Come

4 For to us a Child is born, to us a Son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. ISAIAH 9:6

5 Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever.

6 The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this. ISAIAH 9:7

7 The longing in Jesus day was the longing for the kingdom of God. The question in Jesus day was, How will it be brought to earth? JOHN ORTBERG

8 Encountering the King Who Has Come

9 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem MATTHEW 2:1

10 and asked, Where is the One who has been born King of the Jews? We saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him. MATTHEW 2:2

11 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. MATTHEW 2:3

12 When he had called together all the people s chief priests and teachers of the Law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born. MATTHEW 2:4

13 In Bethlehem in Judea, they replied, for this is what the prophet has written: MATTHEW 2:5

14 But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the Shepherd of my people Israel. MATTHEW 2:6

15 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. MATTHEW 2:7

16 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, Go and make a careful search for the Child. As soon as you find Him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship Him. MATTHEW 2:8

17 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the Child was. MATTHEW 2:9

18 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. MATTHEW 2:10

19 On coming to the house, they saw the Child with His mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped Him. Then they opened their treasures and presented Him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. MATTHEW 2:11

20 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route. MATTHEW 2:12

21 When He came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: LUKE 19:37

22 Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest! LUKE 19:38

23 They were proclaiming a real king who would sit on a real throne with a real history. God would one day send a King who would rule from David s throne with perfect righteousness and justice. GREG GILBERT

24 Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus, and asked Him, Are You the King of the Jews? JOHN 18:33

25 Is that your own idea, Jesus asked, or did others talk to you about Me? JOHN 18:34

26 Am I a Jew? Pilate replied. It was Your people and Your chief priests who handed You over to me. What is it You have done? JOHN 18:35

27 Jesus said, My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, My servants would fight to prevent My arrest by the Jews. But now My kingdom is from another place. JOHN 18:36

28 You are a king, then! said Pilate. Jesus answered, You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to Me. JOHN 18:37

29 What is truth? Pilate asked. JOHN 18:38A

39 The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said: The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He will reign for ever and ever. REVELATION 11:15

40 They will make war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will overcome them because He is Lord of lords and King of kings and with Him will be His called, chosen, and faithful followers. REVELATION 17:14

41 The Promised King will one day usher in the ultimate kingdom in all its glory.

42 Are you already one of His subjects?

43 Does your present life reflect that confident hope?
