ARE YOU THE KING OF THE JEWS? A. Setting: Jesus had been submitted to a mock trail put on by the Jews, & after being falsely accused of blasphemy He was taken to Pilate, the Jews hoping that He would rubber stamp their conviction & put Jesus to death. 2. Pilate had the reputation of being beside himself (mad) much of the time. a. His methods of governing the people bordered on extreme cruelty. b. And in the end, he took his own life while in the city of Rome. 1. Purpose: To listen to the exchange between Jesus & Pilate, & to contemplate the lessons God would have us to learn from this event. I. ROMAN GOVERNOR PONTUS PILATE A. Ruled in Judea from A.D. 1. Governorships of that region given for 3 reasons: a. No other posts open; Caesar wanted you away; Beginner on your way up. 3. He despised the Jews a. He hated their religious philosophy of exclusivity. b. The chief priests burned up the road from Jerusalem to Rome complaining about Pilate to Caesar. 4. He loved his home in Caesarea, & detested the city of Jerusalem. a. He only went on official business, or on feast days to keep the peace. [To understand him you must keep in mind the contempt he had for his subjects, his fear of Caesar, & his desire for a good record in Rome.] 11
II. MEETING ON THE PORCH III. MEETING IN PILATE S HALL John 18:28-32 Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium, & it was early morning. But they themselves did not go into the Praetorium, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover. 29 Pilate then went out to them & said, What accusation do you bring against this Man? 30 They answered & said to him, If He were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him up to you. 31 Then Pilate said to them, You take Him & judge Him according to your law. Therefore the Jews said to him, It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death, 32 that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled which He spoke, signifying by what death He would die. A. Pilate realized that his first plan (to allow the Jews to handle the matter) would not work, not if they had an execution in mind. 1. So he demanded details, which the Jews expected, & they were prepared. Luke 23:2 We found this fellow perverting the nation, & forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, saying that He Himself is Christ, a King. [Pilate seemed to be unaware of the effect Jesus was having on his nation. Pilate feared trouble if word got back to Caesar, so he decided to interview Jesus himself.] John 18:33 Then Pilate entered the Praetorium again, called Jesus, & said to Him, Are You the King of the Jews? A. How did Pilate conduct this interview? 1. Sarcastic making fun 2. Malicious hateful 3. Cynical suspicious 4. It appears he just wanted a quick resolution. 5. NASV You are the king of the Jews? B. Then Jesus took control of the interview. John 18:34 Jesus answered him, Are you speaking for yourself about this, or did others tell you this concerning Me? 1. Jesus knew the answer to that question; He was trying to get Pilate to look inward. 22
2. Pilate: Wait a minute, who s on trial here? John 18:35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Your own nation & the chief priests have delivered You to me. What have You done? 3. Now Jesus had his undivided attention. John 18:36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here. But Pilate was NOT brought any witness that day; all the evidence went unheard, & yet it was all around him. Paul would later say to King Agrippa, For the king knows these things; for I am convinced that none of these things escapes his attention, since this thing was not done in a corner (Acts 26:26). But Pilate, like many today, did not have eyes to see or ears to hear the evidence regarding Jesus.] 4. Then Pilate s curiosity kicked-in. IV. GOD S TESTIMONY THAT JESUS IS KING PROPHETS: John 18:37 Pilate therefore said to Him, Are You a king then? [What would Pilate have done if God had presented all His witnesses to prove the claims made by Jesus (From Samuel, to David & the prophets, & even the Angels)? At this point Pilate his having a difficult time believing that this young man from Nazareth in anyone of importance. He could see that Jesus was poor, bruised, beaten & rejected by His own people. 2 Samuel 7: B.C. [Nathan tells of God s covenant with David] 12 When your days are fulfilled & you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, & I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for My name, & I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. Daniel 7: B.C. [Babylonian captivity] 13 I was watching in the night visions, & behold, One like the Son of Man, coming with the clouds of heaven! He came to the Ancient of Days, & they brought Him near before Him. 14 Then to Him was given dominion & glory & a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, & languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, & His kingdom the one which shall not be destroyed. 33
Zechariah 9:9 520 B.C. [During the rebuilding the Temple] 9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just & having salvation, lowly & riding on a donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey. ANGELS & OTHERS IN HEAVEN: Luke 1:30-33 [Gabriel came to Mary] 30 Then the angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb & bring forth a Son, & shall call His name JESUS. 32 He will be great, & will be called the Son of the Highest; & the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. 33 And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, & of His kingdom there will be no end. Revelation 5:11-12 [Jesus return to Heaven] 11 Then I looked, & I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, & the elders; & the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, & thousands of thousands, 12 saying with a loud voice: Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power & riches & wisdom, & strength & honor & glory & blessing! (This describes the events of Dan 7:13-14) GOD THE FATHER: Hebrews 1:8-9 (Psa 45:6-7) [Jesus exalted above the angels] 8 But to the Son He says: Your throne, O God, is forever & ever; a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. 9 You have loved righteousness & hated lawlessness; therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness more than Your companions. THE SON OF GOD: Matthew 25:31, 34 [Judgment scene] 31 When the Son of Man comes in His glory, & all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory Then the King will say to those on His right hand, Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: Matthew 22:2 (Wedding Feast); Matthew 18:23 (Unmerciful Servant) THE HOLY SPIRIT APOSTLES: Ephesians 1: He [Father] raised Him [Jesus] from the dead & seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all principality & power & might & dominion, & every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come. Philippians 2: that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, & of those on earth, & of those under the earth, 11 & that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Acts 2:36 36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord & Christ (anointed ruler; King) THE WORDS OF FRIENDS: Matthew 2:2 [The Magi or Wise men] 2 Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East & have come to worship Him. 44
John 1:49 [Nathaniel responded to Jesus Omniscience] 49 Nathaniel answered & said to Him, Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel! Luke 19:38 [Jesus is greeted by the people at the city gate] 38 Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the LORD! Peace in heaven & glory in the highest! THE TAUNTINGS OF HIS ENEMIES: Matthew 27: Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium & gathered the whole garrison around Him. 28 And they stripped Him & put a scarlet robe on Him. 29 When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, & a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him & mocked Him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! CLOSING A. Back to Pilate s question, notice Jesus response. John 18:37 Pilate therefore said to Him, Are You a king then? Jesus answered, You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, & for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice. 1. Yes Pilate, He is a King! John 19:19 19 Now Pilate wrote a title & put it on the cross. And the writing was: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. 2. He is like you & Caesar in that he rules over more unwilling subjects that willing (Matt 28:18). Matthew 27: Likewise the chief priests also, mocking with the scribes & elders, said, 42 He saved others; Himself He cannot save. If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, & we will believe Him. [From the beginning to the end of His life, He was called a King. The evidence was irrefutable.] 3. He is not like you in that His only interest is in getting men to respond to truth, God s word. 4. He is not like you in that He was willing to leave His glorious home & live among the poorest of men, to lead them out of error, to heal & help them, & to point them to Heaven. 55
5. He is not like you Pilate in that He was willing to die for His subjects. 1 Peter 2:21-24 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: 22 Who committed no sin, nor was deceit found in His mouth ; 23 who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously; 24 who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness by whose stripes you were healed. Tell me no more of the splendor Of the courts of the mighty kings; Speak to me not of the grandeur Of the brightest earthly kings; For how shall I care for glitter Of gold or pearl or gem? Or how shall my eyes be dazzled By a monarch s diadem? Or how shall this heart be ravished By the choicest earth can boast, Now that my eyes have seen Him, The King, the Lord of Hosts! -- Lang B. Do you honor Jesus as King? 1. He is not a President who can be elected & replaced; He s the King of Kings by God s appointment. 2. Do you honor Him with the first fruits of your possessions? 3. Do you honor Him by how you dress? 4. Do you honor Him with the hours & minutes of your life? 5. Do you seek first the kingdom? C. Will you accept Him for the King that He is? John 3:3-5 Jesus answered & said to him, Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4 Nicodemus said to Him, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother s womb & be born? 5 Jesus answered, Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water & the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. Col 1:12-14 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness & conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, 14 in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins. 66
