1 Jesus Was Born Session 1 Lessons for the Leader Consider the following about Isaiah: ttthe ministry of Isaiah lasted about 40 years and covered the reign of four kings (Isaiah 1:1). ttisaiah delivered messages full of commands and promises. ttgod revealed to Isaiah an amazing prophetic sign a very special child would be born to a virgin. The child's name would be Immanuel, meaning "God with us." A baby born to a virgin a human impossibility was God's plan to prove the plan was God's plan. Read Isaiah 6. This chapter describes God's call to Isaiah and the mission he was to do. Read Isaiah 7. King Ahaz (AY haz) was an evil king of Judah. He ruled for 16 years, during which he maintained idolatrous practices (2 Kings 16). He refused the words of the prophets. What did God say to Ahaz? Why would Ahaz not ask for a sign from God? Although Ahaz would not ask for a sign, God still provided it. Reread verse 14. How might this verse give hope to the people of Israel? How does it give hope to people today? Read Isaiah 9:6-7. Does Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus" ring through your head? This passage inspires praise and excitement for what God has done and what He has yet to do. Read Isaiah 11:1-5. By the time of Jesus' birth, the house of David had returned to its humble roots; neither Joseph nor Mary came from prominent homes. From these obscure beginnings, this tender new branch of Jesse's family (David's father) would grow to become more powerful than King David himself. Help the preschoolers discover people in the Old Testament told that Jesus would be born. What do these symbols mean? Isaiah Told About Jesus Based on Isaiah 1:1; 6:1,8; 7:14; 9:6-7; 11:1-5 Isaiah [page 1] lived near the town of Jerusalem, in the country of Judah [page 2]. God asked, "Whom will I send to tell people My message (what God wants people to know)?" Isaiah said, "Send me, God. I will go" [page 3]. Isaiah became a prophet, "someone who tells people what God wants them to know." All along God had a plan. God chose Isaiah to tell the people some wonderful news. Isaiah wrote what God told him to write [page 4]. Isaiah said that a young woman would have a special baby boy. The special baby would be God's Son. The baby would be called Immanuel (ih AN yoo el). Adaptation for 3s Page 2 of 6

3 Say: "When the baby was born many years later, He was named Jesus." [page 5]. God's message to Isaiah helped the people know that Jesus would love all people. Jesus would help people understand more about God. Jesus would grow into a man [page 6] who would be wise and do what was right. Jesus would help people know and love God. Isaiah wrote the words on a scroll [page 7]. People who heard or read the words knew that God was planning to send His Son, Jesus. 9 Practice Bible Skills (2 minutes) Pull It Together Print "Isaiah" (CD). Encourage kids to parade around the room with their banners held high. Pray. Worship Through Dramatic Play Prepare a Time Capsule Review: "God told Isaiah about His plan for Jesus' birth a long time before it happened. Even though Isaiah wrote about Jesus' birth a long time ago, we can read about it in the Bible [display]. The Bible is like a time capsule. A time capsule is 'a sealed container saving things of today (cell phone, CD, DVD, etc.) for people to look at in the future.' The Bible has stories that happened a long time ago that we can read and learn about today. Let's put together a time capsule for our class." Distribute construction paper, crayons, and markers. Ask: "What do you think God wants you to be when you grow up? Draw a picture of what you will be. The teachers will write what you want to be, your name, and age." Take pictures of the children. Help kids put on smocks. Dip the kids' hands in paint and make handprints on the large paper. Print each child's name under his prints. Help kids wash hands. Invite kids to decorate the time capsule box. Tell: "I'll print our pictures and wait for the handprints to dry. Everything will go inside the box so I can seal (tape) it closed." Conclude: "God planned for people to tell of Jesus' birth. I'll keep our box so we can open it in a few months." Pray. Adaptation for 3s Page 5 of 6

6 Pull It Together Giant Game Floor Mat*, scissors Print "Word Sequence" (CD) and cut apart words. Use only the words with stars and triangles. Spread the mat on the floor. Place the mixed up words faceup on the floor around the mat. Worship Through Games Follow the Word Sequence Instruct: "Let's put the words of our Bible verse in the mat. Each word has a star [display]. We'll use the numbers in the stars to put the words in the right order." Invite a child to find the star with the number 1 in it. Place the first word in the top left corner of the mat. Continue inviting kids to find the words and placing them in the first two rows. Read aloud the verse, encouraging kids to repeat after you. Repeat the same process for the life application statement. Form and name two teams (Teams 1 and 2). State: "Team 2, stay seated. Team 1, line up at the first word of our Bible verse. Everyone will follow [say child's name] as he steps on the numbered stars in the correct order." Allow Team 1 to walk across the words. Direct Team 1 to sit down and Team 2 to walk across the life application words. Invite different team members to lead their groups across the words in different movements (hop, skip, sideways, etc.). Conclude: "God planned for people to tell of Jesus' birth." Pray. Pull It Together Globe or map, fabric or robes, cookies, plates or napkins, cups, juice or water Print "Chinese Numbers" and "Allergy Alert" (CD). List food items on the "Allergy Alert" and post. Teacher Tips Photocopy "Chinese Numbers" for children to take home. Provide books and/or pictures of China. Insert your mission emphasis if different. Worship Through Exploration and Discovery Learn Facts About Lottie Moon Say: "Isaiah was a prophet. Isaiah told people about Jesus' birth before Jesus was born. Missionaries (people who go and tell people about God and Jesus) long ago told people about Jesus' birth and that Jesus loves them. Missionaries today do the same thing. Charlotte Moon, nicknamed Lottie, was a missionary from Virginia. Virginia is a state on the east coast of America [point to east coast on globe]. Lottie went to the country of China over 100 years ago to tell Chinese people about Jesus." Point to China on a globe and show how far it is from where you live. Show the distance between Virginia and China on the globe. State: "Lottie learned a new language, wore different clothes, ate different foods, and made new friends. Lottie did all of this because she wanted the Chinese people to know that Jesus loved them." Display the Chinese numbers and practice counting aloud to 10. Share: "Lottie baked cookies to share with her neighbors as she told them about Jesus. She earned a new nickname in China Cookie Lady." Invite children to dress up and pretend to be in China. Guide kids to wash hands. Enlist kids to set out snack. Pray, and then snack on cookies. Encourage kids while they eat to tell what they learned today.
