10 Commandments from The Large Catechism
1st Commandment You are to have no other gods. (LC) We are to fear, love, and trust God above all things. (SC) Ex. 20:3; Deut. 5:7 You shall have no other gods before [besides] me Diane Zemke, PhD
2nd Commandment You are not to take the name of God in vain. (LC) We are to fear and love God so that we do not curse, swear, practice magic, lie, or deceive using God s name, but instead use that very name in every time of need to call on, pray to, praise, and give thanks to God. (SC) Ex. 20:3; Deut. 5:7 You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name. Diane Zemke, PhD
Four-Stranded Approach Meditating Confessing Thanking God You are not to take the name of God in vain. (LC) Praying Diane Zemke, PhD
How do you keep the Sabbath day holy? What makes hearing God hard? Diane Zemke, PhD
3 rd Commandment You are to hallow the day of rest. (LC) We are to fear and love God, so that we do not despise teaching or God s Word, but instead keep that Word holy and gladly hear and learn it. (SC) Diane Zemke, PhD
3 rd Commandment Remember the sabbath day and keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and consecrated it. Ex. 20: 8-11; (Deut. 5:12-15) Diane Zemke, PhD
Intent of 3 rd Commandment As far as outward observance is concerned, the commandment was given to the Jews alone. They were to refrain from hard work and to rest, so that human beings and animals might be refreshed and not be exhausted by constant labor.[but] the Jews interpreted this commandment too narrowly and grossly misused it. The intention [was] to sanctify the holy day or day of rest. Diane Zemke, PhD
Reasons for Christian Observance Our bodies need the rest All workers need it Opportunity to attend worship services Hear and discuss God s Word Praise Sing Pray Diane Zemke, PhD
Does the Day Matter? No one day is better than another. Actually worship ought to take place daily [but] because this is more than the common people can do, at least one day a week ought to be side apart for it. Diane Zemke, PhD
What s it Mean to Keep it holy? Nothing less than holy words, holy works, and holy living. The day itself does not need to be made holy, for it was created holy. But God wants it to be holy for you. So it becomes holy or unholy depending on whether you spend it doing something holy or unholy. Diane Zemke, PhD
What s it Mean to Keep it holy? We Christians ought to make every day such a holy day and devote ourselves only to holy things to occupy ourselves daily with God s Word and carry it in our hearts and on our lips. Diane Zemke, PhD
What s it Mean to Keep it holy? Note, then, that the power and force of the commandment consists not in the resting but in the hallowing. Other work and business are really not designated holy activities unless the person doing them is first holy. Diane Zemke, PhD
How We Break the 3 rd Commandment This commandment is violated not only by those who grossly misuse and desecrate the holy day.[but] also by that other crowd who listen to God s Word as they would to any other entertainment, who only from force of habit go to hear the sermon and leave again with as little knowledge as at the beginning. Diane Zemke, PhD
Benefits of Keeping It Even though you know the Word perfectly and have already mastered everything, you are daily under the dominion of the devil and he does not rest day or night in seeking to take you unawares and to kindle in your heart unbelief and wicked thoughts against these three and all the other commandments. Diane Zemke, PhD
Benefits of Keeping It You must constantly keep God s Word in your heart, on your lips, and in your ears. When we seriously ponder the Word, hear it, and put it to use, such is its power that it never departs without fruit. It always awakens new understanding, pleasure and devotion, and it constantly creates clean hearts and minds. Diane Zemke, PhD
Practices Diane Zemke, PhD
Four-Stranded Approach Meditating Thanking God You are to hallow the day of rest. (LC) Confessing Praying Diane Zemke, PhD
