1 The Resurrection of the Messiah A Prophecy of Jesus Christ our Lord Psalm 16:1-11
2 Text: Psalm 16:1-11, The Resurrection of the Messiah A Prophecy of Jesus Christ our Lord 1. Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust. 2. O my soul, thou hast said unto the Lord, Thou art my Lord: my goodness extendeth not to thee; 3. But to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, In whom is all my delight. 4. Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god; their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips. 5. The Lord is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot. 6. The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage. 7. I will bless the Lord, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons. 8. I have set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. 9. Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope. 10. For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. 11. Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fullness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Introduction: I. The superscription to this psalm reads, Michtam of David.
3 A. What Michtam means is uncertain; some suggest it means The Golden Psalm. (Coffman) B. Dummelow via Coffman suggested Michtam may have some musical meaning. C. Six psalms (16, 56-60) have this general title. 1. Michtam may mean gold or precious. (Smith) 2. Michtam may refer to David as meek and undefiled. D. David wrote Psalm Acts 2:25-28, For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved: Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope: Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance. 2. In Psalm 16 David spoke with poetic license of himself and most especially prophetically of Christ Jesus. II. Fully half of this psalm is quoted in the New Testament by Peter and Paul and shown to refer to Christ, God s Holy One, and his resurrection from the dead so quickly his body saw no corruption. (Coffman) A. Psalm 16 refers to the one truly righteous man, Jesus Christ. B. Psalm 15 describes righteous people generally while Psalm 16 describes the ultimate righteous man, Christ Jesus.
4 III. Psalm 16 Outlined: A. Smith divides this psalm into four sections; viz., 1. The cry of Christ (verses 1, 2). 2. The confession of Christ (verses 3, 4). 3. The commitment of Christ (verses 5-8). 4. The confidence of Christ (verses 9-11). B. The Pulpit Commentary notes two divisions, strophes; that is, 1. Verses 1-6 and Verses C. Tesh and Zorn see five divisions in Psalm 16; viz., 1. Introductory Prayer and Commitment (verse 1). 2. The Lord is My Refuge (verses 2-4). 3. The Lord is My Portion (verses 5, 6). 4. The Lord is My Counselor (verses 7, 8). 5. The Lord is My Life (verses 9-11). Commentary: Psalm 16:1, Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust. I. Keep me, preserve me safe, O God,... (NIV)
5 A. This is a prayer for continuing divine protective care as uttered by one accustomed to living in close fellowship with God. II. for in you I put my trust, take refuge. (NIV) A. God is our ultimate safe retreat in time of storm, our refuge. B. With him no other refuge can compare. Psalm 16:2, O my soul, thou hast said unto the Lord, Thou art my Lord: my goodness extendeth not to thee; I. I said to the Lord, You are my Lord;... (NIV) A. Christ here expresses his submission to the Father. (Smith) B. David regarded God as his solid refuge in whom he could find protection in all of life s problems and dangers. (Tesh and Zorn) II. apart from you I have no good thing. (NIV) A. Doing God s will is Christ s top priority. (Smith) B. Apart from God no claim of happiness, goodness or prosperity can be made. 1. Psalm 106:4, 5, Remember me, O Lord, with the favour that thou bearst unto thy people: O visit me with thy salvation; That I may see the good of thy chosen, that I may rejoice in the gladness of thy nation, that I may glory with thine inheritance. Psalm 16:3, But to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, In whom is all my delight.
6 I. As for the saints who are in the land, earth... (NIV) A. Christ here expresses his high esteem for the righteous servants of God. (Smith) II. they are the glorious ones in whom is all my delight. (NIV) A. Christ respects the saints, God s nobles. (Smith) B. Psalm 147:11, The Lord taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy. Psalm 16:4, Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god; their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips. I. The sorrows of those will increase who run after other gods. (NIV) A. Idol worshippers are condemned, set on a course of multiplied sorrows. (Smith) B. This sad note in reference to idolators is in contrast to the joy reserved for the righteous of verse 5. (Pulpit Commentary) II. I will not pour out their libations of blood... (NIV) A. Drink offerings of blood may have been employed in the worship of Moloch. (Rawlinson via Coffman) 1. Acts 15:28, 29, For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things; That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and
7 from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well. 2. The Pulpit Commentary reads, It is best to explain the expression, as used here, metaphorically, as drink offerings as hateful as if they had been of blood. a. Isaiah 66:3, He that killeth an ox is as if he slew a man; he that sacrificeth a lamb, as if he cut off a dog s neck; he that offereth an oblation, as if he offered swine s blood; he that burneth incense, as if he blessed an idol. Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their abominations. B. Christ s sacrifice will not benefit unrepentant idolators. (Smith) III. or take up their names on my (David s) lips. (NIV) A. Christ will not intercede on behalf of unrepentant sinners. (Smith) 1. Proverbs 1:27-30, When your fear cometh as desolations, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you. Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the Lord: They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. B. The names of the idols are in view here. 1. The Law forbade the mention of these names by Israelites. (Pulpit Commentary)
8 a. Exodus 23:13, And in all things that I have said unto you be circumspect: and make no mention of the name of other gods, neither let it be heard out of thy mouth. b. Deuteronomy 12:3, And ye shall overthrow their altars, and break their pillars, and burn their groves with fire; and ye shall hew down the graven images of their gods, and destroy the names of them out of that place. C. Tesh and Zorn wrote,... sorrows will overwhelm those who would follow other gods. There is no refuge in that direction. Psalm 16:5, The Lord is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot. I. Lord, you have assigned me my portion and my cup;... (NIV) A. Christ regarded doing his God-given duty, his earthly mission, as his portion and his cup. (Smith) B. The Pulpit Commentary states that God, when he gave no land grant to Aaron, promised him, I am thy Part and thine Inheritance among the children of Israel. (Numbers 18:20) C. Christ, David, the righteous saints here claim God as their Portion and Inheritance. D. Cup here represents a person s lot or condition in life that is given him to drink. (Pulpit Commentary) 1. Psalm 11:6, Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and an horrible tempest: this shall be the portion of their cup.
Psalm 23:5, Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. E. Tesh and Zorn wrote, In committing his life to God, the psalmist made a great discovery. He found a joy in living that did not depend upon fortune or circumstances. II. you have made my lot secure,... (NIV) A. You make my lot firm and sure. 1. Psalm 30:6, And in my prosperity I said, I shall never be moved. Psalm 16:6, The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage. I. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;... (NIV) A. The place of David s abode was Jerusalem and its vicinity. (The Pulpit Commentary) 1. Deuteronomy 32:9, For the Lord s portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance. 2. Joshua 17:5, And there fell ten portions to Manasseah, beside the land of Gilead and Bashan, which were on the other side Jordan; B. Christ s abode is at God s right hand in heavenly places. II. surely I have a delightful, goodly inheritance. (NIV)
10 A. David s lot in life was, in many ways, very good. B. Christ s heavenly heritage is the ultimate possible delightful, good inheritance! Psalm 16:7, I will bless the Lord, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons. I. I will praise the Lord, who counsels me;... (NIV) A. God counseled, coached Christ and Christ praised God for his direction, guidance. (Smith) B. Christ s single minded aim was to please God by doing his will. (Smith) 1. This should be our aim as well! C. God also counseled David who lived, for the most part, as a man after God s own heart. 1. Psalm 32:8, I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye. D. God counsels us by his inspired word. 1. Psalm 119:11, 105, Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. 2. Conscience may also be considered divine counseling. II. even at night my heart, reins instructs me. (NIV)
11 A. David was also instructed by his feelings and emotions. (The Pulpit Commentary) 1. At night as David lay on his bed his thoughts, filled with affection and gratitude, turned toward God. (The Pulpit Commentary) B. Christ s feelings and emotions, day and night, focused on God. 1. Matthew 26:36-44, Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder. And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me. And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done. And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy. And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. Psalm 16:8, I have set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. I. I have set the Lord always before me. (NIV) A. This refers to Jesus Christ.
Acts 2:25, For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved: B. David believed God was ever with him as well in both times of happiness and trouble. II. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. (NIV) A. Both David and Christ knew that God was ever close at hand to protect and save, and that nothing would shake or disturb their trust and confidence in God. Psalm 16:9, Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope. I. Therefore my heart, intellect is glad and my tongue, glory rejoices;... (NIV) A God s protection results in gladness and expressed joy on the part of the righteous. 1. Glory represents the soul or spirit. 2. Proverbs 23:7, For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee: but his heart is not with thee. II. my body, flesh also will rest in hope, secure,... (NIV) A. The body, soul and spirit all, in God s care, dwell in safety. (The Pulpit Commentary)
Psalm 4:8, I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety. B. Tesh and Zorn wrote, He (David) only knows that God is the giver and sustainer of life, and that he has power over death and the grave. Furthermore, he can believe that God, so near to him in life, will be near him in death and even beyond death. Where God is, there is life. Psalm 16:10, For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. I. Because you will not abandon me to the grave, leave my soul in hell, sheol or hades. (NIV) A. The grave is NOT the end of it all! B. Scriptures: 1. Hebrews 11:32-34, And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets: Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. 2. Isaiah 26:19, The dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead.
Daniel 12:2, And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. 4. Job 14:14, If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come. C. David had faith that the grave would not forever hold him. II. nor will you let your Holy One see decay. (NIV) A. God s absolute Holy One is Jesus who was resurrected before his body could decay. 1. Mark 1:24, Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God. 2. Luke 4:34, Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God. 3. Acts 3:14, But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you; 4. Acts 2:25-28, For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved: Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope: Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance.
Acts 13:34-37, And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David. Wherefore he saith also in another psalm, Thou shalt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his father, and saw corruption: But he, whom God raised again, saw o corruption. Note: Psalm 16 is quoted twice in the New Testament where it clearly refers to Christ. (Acts 2:25-28; Acts 13:35) (Smith) III. Through Christ faithful Christians have expectation, hope of the resurrection from the dead. A. 2 Timothy 1:10, But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel: B. John 14:19, Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. Psalm 16:11, Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fullness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. I. You have made known to me, will show me, the path of life;... (NIV) A. Christ sowed us the way from the grave to heavenly glory! Follow him! B. 1 Corinthians 15:20, But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the first-fruits of them that slept.
16 C. Two roads are before us, the road to corruption and the road to life. 1. God through Christ shows us the path to life! II. you will fill me with joy in your presence,... (NIV) A. Fullness of joy, ultimate happiness, is to be found in God s heavenly presence! B. This psalm contrasts life here and hereafter and life with and without God. III. with eternal pleasures at your right hand. (NIV) A. Hebrews 1:3, Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; B. Hebrews 8:1, Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; C. This eternal pleasure is everlasting, without end. D. Christ had utmost confidence that God would see him through all the trials and tribulations of this life. 1. We are able to share in this confidence that God will see us through it all! E. God s right hand is filled with blessings to overflowing ready to be bestowed upon the faithful for evermore!
17 F. Tesh and Zorn wrote,... God, who has given life, sustains it and enhances it! even beyond the grave. Conclusion: I. Through Christ we have the fullness of joy in this life and in the life which is to come! A. May we ever walk in the paths of joyful life. B. This joyful life is achieved only by living in harmony with the will of God, having daily fellowship with God. II. David (and Christ) saw God as his refuge, his portion, his counselor, and his life! A. Do you and I see God in this same way? B. If so, we will achieve the fullness of joy now and evermore.
