The Wired Word -- Confronting the news with Scripture and Hope 1 of 6 9/11/2011 1:12 PM Dear Teacher, Most people remember exactly where they were and what they were doing when they learned the terrible news about the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, Ten years have now passed, and on this Sunday, many memorial observances will take place across the country as people mark that sad day. The occasion invites us not only to recall the events of that day, but also to consider how we have changed since then, especially in our feelings of security and in our understanding of other cultures. It also gives us an opportunity to review some powerful words of Scripture to gain perspective and refresh our hope in God. Those are our themes for this installment of The Wired Word. Remember, if you wish to provide your class members with an abbreviated copy of the lesson, click here, and you can send them a copy via today. May God bless you as you teach the Scriptures this week. The Editorial Team of The Wired Word In the News The Wired Word for September 11, 2011 This Sunday, September 11, is the 10th anniversary of four coordinated suicide terrorist attacks on the United States that, combined, killed nearly 3,000 people, brought down the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, damaged the Pentagon and destroyed the sense of security people had long felt about living in this country. The day will be marked by the dedication of the 9/11 National Memorial at the site of the World Trade Center, the opening of the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, a ceremony for families of 9/11 victims at the Pentagon and many other observances across the country -- from concerts to prayer services to special museum exhibits to fundraising events for military personnel and more. The events of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, often shorthanded as 9/11, were put into motion as four groups of men, 19 in all, from the terrorist group al-qaeda, hijacked four commercial jet airliners filled with passengers. The hijackers crashed two of the planes into the two towers of the World Trade Center. Both buildings burned, and within two hours collapsed, destroying nearby buildings and damaging others, and killing more than 2,700 people, including everyone on board the planes. A third jet was flown into the Pentagon building in Washington, D.C., taking more lives. The fourth jet, which the hijackers apparently intended to fly into either the U.S. Capitol building or the White House, crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers attempted to retake control of the plane. Everyone on board perished in the crash. In all four attacks, 2,996 people died, including the 19 hijackers. At the World Trade Center, the victims

The Wired Word -- Confronting the news with Scripture and Hope 2 of 6 9/11/2011 1:12 PM included 411 rescue workers attempting to save people in the buildings. There were nationals of over 90 countries among the dead. So complete was the destruction that over 1,700 families received no remains. Al-Qaeda is a terrorist organization whose members claim to represent Islam, but mainstream Muslims disavow the group, calling them extremists who have distorted the principles of Islam. The al-qaeda leadership, which eventually claimed responsibility for the attacks, cited three motives for doing so: the presence of U.S. troops in Saudi Arabia, U.S. support of Israel and sanctions against Iraq. The United States responded to the attacks by launching the U.S. Global War on Terror; by invading Afghanistan to depose the Taliban, who had harbored al-qaeda members; and by enacting the USA PATRIOT Act, which dramatically reduced restrictions on law enforcement agencies in surveillance procedures, eased restrictions on intelligence gathering and instituted other changes that critics saw as a threat to civil liberties. The subsequent invasion of Iraq is often considered a U.S. response to 9/11 as well, although neither the Iraqis nor their then ruler, Saddam Hussein, were ever implicated in any of the 9/11 attacks. In addition to the loss of life, loved ones of the victims were plunged into grief and shock. More than 3,000 children lost a parent that day, and more than 1,600 adults lost a spouse or partner in the attacks. The attacks also negatively affected the U.S. economic markets and launched the country into two wars. But perhaps the most widespread effect was Americans loss of a sense of security within the nation s borders and an end to the national optimism that had marked the United States since the conclusion of the Cold War. Within a year after 9/11, the wreckage from the twin towers was cleared and the damage to the Pentagon was repaired. New construction at the twin towers site is under way and the first phase of a memorial in the Shanksville field is ready for the 10th anniversary observance. But 9/11 changed much in the American psyche. It left Americans feeling more vulnerable, less in control of the present and more worried about the future. Speaking last month as a panelist at the Aspen Institute, Madeleine Albright, secretary of state under former President Bill Clinton, acknowledged the profound change in the American outlook, but said, We have to not be ruled by the fear factor; we have to take this anniversary and look at what s best in us, and look at what we need to be the best. U.S. Government Printing Office (see especially the chapter Heroism and Horror ) The Big Questions 1. In what ways do you feel differently about your security today than before 9/11? How does your Christian faith affect your feelings of security? 2. How has your understanding of other cultures and other religious faiths changed since 9/11? How

The Wired Word -- Confronting the news with Scripture and Hope 3 of 6 9/11/2011 1:12 PM has that understanding changed how you view America s role in the world community? How has 9/11 changed how you view Christianity s place in the world? 3. What do memorial observances accomplish? Specifically, what effect do they have on the survivors? On the families of victims? On the community? On the general public? How is memorializing related to living your faith in Christ? 4. In what ways have we, as a nation, absorbed the 9/11 tragedy and moved on? What does that mean? Is it a self-defense mechanism? What are the possible dangers of absorbing and moving on? 5. During World War II, the noted Christian writer C.S. Lewis said he prayed for Hitler, Stalin and Mussolini. How might the world be different today if all Christians prayed regularly for the al-qaeda leadership? Confronting the News with Scripture Here are some Bible verses to guide your discussion: Psalm 46:1-3 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult. (For context, read 46:1-11.) We will not fear, though the earth should change, says this psalmist. September 11, 2001, was a day on which for Americans, and for many others, the earth changed. The United States experienced a shaking that reached to its very roots. The assumption that it can t happen here was jolted out of us, and any lingering notion that being on the side of liberty and justice for all was any kind of insulation against massive tragedy was banished. Gone were the days when all we had to fear was fear itself. Yet, even when the earth changes, says the psalmist, we can take comfort in the fact that God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Questions: If you can recall your emotions on 9/11, what help did you experience from your faith? In what ways do you experience God as a very present help today? Lamentations 2:11 My eyes are spent with weeping; my stomach churns; my bile is poured out on the ground because of the destruction of my people, because infants and babes faint in the streets of the city. (For context, read 2:8-13.) The book of Lamentations is a collection of five laments -- dirges -- bewailing the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians in 586 B.C. The verse above is typical of the tone of these laments. A lament is different from a complaint. Those who lodge a complaint expect action in response. Those who utter a lament expect no action in response; they assume that nothing can be done about the terrible events that have occurred (such as the destruction of Jerusalem lamented in Lamentations). Yet the lamenter hopes that someone is listening to the lament. In Lamentations, the assumption is that God is listening. Laments have a place not only in the Bible, but in the life of faith itself, in that they permit a question like How could God allow this to happen? to be asked without expecting an answer. The words expressing anguish and suffering in a lament can provide a venue for others to express their grief and pain as well.

The Wired Word -- Confronting the news with Scripture and Hope 4 of 6 9/11/2011 1:12 PM While the book of Lamentations comes up with no answers to its grief questions, it does contain this remarkable affirmation: The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. The LORD is my portion, says my soul, therefore I will hope in him (3:22-24). Questions: The days and weeks immediately following 9/11 were times for lamentation. When has being willing to listen to someone s lament enabled you to be a channel of help or blessing to that person? While laments are also appropriate at 9/11-anniversary events, what other kinds of expressions are appropriate? Why? Joshua 4:6-7 When your children ask in time to come, What do those stones mean to you? then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off in front of the ark of the covenant of the LORD. So these stones shall be to the Israelites a memorial forever. (For context, read 3:14--4:9.) The people of Israel were on the final leg of their journey into the Promised Land after fleeing from slavery in Egypt. One final barrier lay before them: the Jordan River. God instructed Joshua to send the priests, carrying the ark of the covenant, into the river. As soon as their feet touched the water, the river parted, and it remained parted while the entire mass of Israelites crossed on dry land. This was an event worth memorializing, and God told Joshua to have one man from each of the 12 tribes of Israel take a stone from the riverbed and carry it onto the riverbank on the side where the people of Israel now were. There, Joshua heaped the 12 stones up as a memorial to commemorate God's intervention, parting the river for them. Joshua then made the statement quoted above, making clear that memorials are not only for those who were present at the event being memorialized, but also for those who would come later. While these stones marked a glad event, their function was still like that of memorials marking anniversaries of tragedies in that they were for purposes of calling to mind that something of great significance -- something that redefined life as it was known -- had occurred. Questions: To what extent are Americans ready to cross over into a new way of life, remembering and commemorating 9/11 without allowing it to color the perception of every event related to people outside the United States? Do you think 9/11 is significant in determining attitudes toward patriotism? What are appropriate ways to commemorate the memory of that day? Baptism and communion serve as memorials of the death and resurrection of Christ. How do baptism and communion, which commemorate events in the past, help believers live in faith in the present and with hope for the future? Romans 5:7-8 Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person -- though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. (For context, read Romans 5:6-11.) Here Paul states that it is rare that someone will voluntarily die for a good person, but that Christ voluntarily died even for sinners. Think of the first responders on 9/11, who ran into the burning towers to help whomever they could, even people they had never met and whose character they could not know. Did those responders know they might not survive the day? They certainly knew it was possible that they might have to give their lives. We can argue that they were only doing their jobs, but it seems like something greater than that. Anniversary observances can help us draw hope from such sacrifices. Questions: What is more important -- the acts of terrorism or the humanitarian response of

The Wired Word -- Confronting the news with Scripture and Hope 5 of 6 9/11/2011 1:12 PM professionals and volunteers in the wake of such acts? How is the sacrifice of the first responders like that of Christ? How is Christ s sacrifice different from theirs? What reaction does the sacrifice of each call forth from us? Deuteronomy 26:6-7 When the Egyptians treated us harshly and afflicted us, by imposing hard labor on us, we cried to the LORD, the God of our ancestors; the LORD heard our voice and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. (For context, read 26:1-15.) From the use of us and our in the verses above, we might assume that those speaking were talking about events they themselves had gone through. But that was not the case. The generation of Israelites who had gone through the Exodus from Egypt and had crossed the Red Sea had subsequently died in the wilderness (Numbers 32:13). Deuteronomy addresses the new generation, the one born in the wilderness. So when the people said the Egyptians treated us harshly, they were not speaking of personal experience, but of their identity as the people of Israel. Even though none of these Israelites experienced any of this affliction themselves, they had inherited the history, and when they recited and memorialized that history, they made the pain of their ancestors their own. By marking their history, they brought an event from the past into the present, and they did it in such a way that it had a powerful effect on them in their own time. This calls to mind the way the Jews celebrate Passover in our day, as though they themselves had participated personally in the Exodus. For Christians, a similar mindset is found in the theme of the spiritual Were You There When They Crucified My Lord? In the context verses, the Deuteronomy generation of Israelites were challenged to recall that it was God who brought them into the Promised Land, a land flowing with milk and honey (v. 9). Their land had come to them as a gift, and they were to treasure it, care for it and protect it as the precious inheritance it was. Questions: Our land, too, is a precious inheritance. In what ways do you treat it as a valuable gift? In what ways do you take it for granted? In what ways do you personally contribute to the good of the nation and the well-being of its citizens? Hebrews 12:28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us give thanks, by which we offer to God an acceptable worship with reverence and awe (For context, read 12:25-29.) If there is one unmistakable lesson we can draw from major, traumatic events, it is that no human defense is certain, and no human life can be guaranteed by any agency of earth. The writer of Hebrews agrees, implying in the verse above that only God is unshakable and the only unshakable place is the kingdom of God itself. Question: Was it easy, in the days immediately following the tragedy 10 years ago, to remember that God s kingdom cannot be -- and was not -- shaken by the events of 9/11? What does this verse imply about the people who follow Jesus today? For Further Discussion 1. What measures ought we Americans to be taking to make our nation a welcome partner at the world table of nations? What measures should we be taking to be more hospitable toward other

The Wired Word -- Confronting the news with Scripture and Hope 6 of 6 9/11/2011 1:12 PM nations? 2. Has 9/11 made you more or less respecting of the differing faiths and opinions of others? What do you think Jesus would say about your answer to that question? 3. How have your views about torture and the value of all human life changed as a result of 9/11? How do those views stack up against your faith in Christ? 4. In what ways has 9/11 and its aftermath expanded your world? your faith? your compassion? your willingness to reach out to others who live in cultures very different from your own? If you have found that your world, your faith, your compassion, your openness to people different from you has diminished since 9/11, what steps can you take to reverse direction, especially during this time of remembrance? 5. Is it fair to compare the depth of emotions felt by people in different circumstances? How would you compare the grief of Americans over the loss of 3,000 on 9/11 to the grief of the people of Rwanda, where over 800,000 died in an attempted genocide? Prior to 9/11, were Americans shielded from the sort of grief that other countries have experienced in greater measure? 6. In rebuilding at the World Trade Center site, thousands of yards of concrete have been poured as part of the infrastructure to protect against a collapse should another attack ever occur. What steps have you taken to fortify your faith in the wake of such an unsettling tragedy? Do tragic events serve as a catalyst to strengthen or weaken your Christian beliefs as you move forward? What lessons might God want us to learn as a people from 9/11? 7. What did you do in the hours and days after 9/11 that was different from how you would have spent that time if 9/11 had not happened? Did you spend time with family? Did you perform active community service or other positive activities? How did your church respond? Responding to the News The 10th anniversary of 9/11 is a good time to consider how you personally can be a peacemaker within your own circle of influence, and how you can bridge chasms of suspicion and misunderstanding between your own culture and people of other cultures with whom you interact. Closing Prayer O God, we pray for comfort and healing for those who bear the personal scars and losses of 9/11. We pray for the interactions between nations, that we may all learn how to be at peace and in fellowship with one another. In Jesus name. Amen. Copyright 2011 Communication Resources

Scriptures for the Wired Word Online Bible Study for September 11, 2011 Psalm 46 1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; 3 though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult. Selah 4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. 5 God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved; God will help it when the morning dawns. 6 The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts. 7 The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah 8 Come, behold the works of the Lord; see what desolations he has brought on the earth. 9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire. 10 Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth. 11 The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah Lamentations 2: The Lord determined to lay in ruins the wall of daughter Zion; he stretched the line; he did not withhold his hand from destroying; he caused rampart and wall to lament; they languish together. 9 Her gates have sunk into the ground; he has ruined and broken her bars; her king and princes are among the nations; guidance is no more, and her prophets obtain no vision from the Lord. 10 The elders of daughter Zion sit on the ground in silence; they have thrown dust on their heads and put on sackcloth; the young girls of Jerusalem have bowed their heads to the ground. 11 My eyes are spent with weeping; my stomach churns; my bile is poured out on the ground because of the destruction of my people, because infants and babes faint in the streets of the city. 12 They cry to their mothers, Where is bread and wine? as they faint like the wounded in the 1

streets of the city, as their life is poured out on their mothers bosom. 13 What can I say for you, to what compare you, O daughter Jerusalem? To what can I liken you, that I may comfort you, O virgin daughter Zion? For vast as the sea is your ruin; who can heal you? Joshua 3:14 4:9 14 When the people set out from their tents to cross over the Jordan, the priests bearing the ark of the covenant were in front of the people. 15 Now the Jordan overflows all its banks throughout the time of harvest. So when those who bore the ark had come to the Jordan, and the feet of the priests bearing the ark were dipped in the edge of the water, 16 the waters flowing from above stood still, rising up in a single heap far off at Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan, while those flowing toward the sea of the Arabah, the Dead Sea, were wholly cut off. Then the people crossed over opposite Jericho. 17 While all Israel were crossing over on dry ground, the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan, until the entire nation finished crossing over the Jordan. 4When the entire nation had finished crossing over the Jordan, the Lord said to Joshua: 2 Select twelve men from the people, one from each tribe, 3 and command them, Take twelve stones from here out of the middle of the Jordan, from the place where the priests feet stood, carry them over with you, and lay them down in the place where you camp tonight. 4 Then Joshua summoned the twelve men from the Israelites, whom he had appointed, one from each tribe. 5 Joshua said to them, Pass on before the ark of the Lord your God into the middle of the Jordan, and each of you take up a stone on his shoulder, one for each of the tribes of the Israelites, 6 so that this may be a sign among you. When your children ask in time to come, What do those stones mean to you? 7 then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off in front of the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. So these stones shall be to the Israelites a memorial forever. 8 The Israelites did as Joshua commanded. They took up twelve stones out of the middle of the Jordan, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, as the Lord told Joshua, carried them over with them to the place where they camped, and laid them down there. 9 (Joshua set up twelve stones in the middle of the Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests bearing the ark of the covenant had stood; and they are there to this day.) Romans 5: For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. 8 But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. 9 Much more surely then, now that we have been justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more surely, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life. 11 But more than that, we even boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. 2

Deuteronomy 26: When you have come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess, and you possess it, and settle in it, 2 you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from the land that the Lord your God is giving you, and you shall put it in a basket and go to the place that the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling for his name. 3 You shall go to the priest who is in office at that time, and say to him, Today I declare to the Lord your God that I have come into the land that the Lord swore to our ancestors to give us. 4 When the priest takes the basket from your hand and sets it down before the altar of the Lord your God, 5 you shall make this response before the Lord your God: A wandering Aramean was my ancestor; he went down into Egypt and lived there as an alien, few in number, and there he became a great nation, mighty and populous. 6 When the Egyptians treated us harshly and afflicted us, by imposing hard labor on us, 7 we cried to the Lord, the God of our ancestors; the Lord heard our voice and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. 8 The Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with a terrifying display of power, and with signs and wonders; 9 and he brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. 10 So now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground that you, O Lord, have given me. You shall set it down before the Lord your God and bow down before the Lord your God. 11 Then you, together with the Levites and the aliens who reside among you, shall celebrate with all the bounty that the Lord your God has given to you and to your house. 12 When you have finished paying all the tithe of your produce in the third year (which is the year of the tithe), giving it to the Levites, the aliens, the orphans, and the widows, so that they may eat their fill within your towns, 13 then you shall say before the Lord your God: I have removed the sacred portion from the house, and I have given it to the Levites, the resident aliens, the orphans, and the widows, in accordance with your entire commandment that you commanded me; I have neither transgressed nor forgotten any of your commandments: 14 I have not eaten of it while in mourning; I have not removed any of it while I was unclean; and I have not offered any of it to the dead. I have obeyed the Lord my God, doing just as you commanded me. 15 Look down from your holy habitation, from heaven, and bless your people Israel and the ground that you have given us, as you swore to our ancestors a land flowing with milk and honey. Hebrews 12: See that you do not refuse the one who is speaking; for if they did not escape when they refused the one who warned them on earth, how much less will we escape if we reject the one who warns from heaven! 26 At that time his voice shook the earth; but now he has promised, Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heaven. 27 This phrase, Yet once more, indicates the removal of what is shaken that is, created things so that what cannot be shaken may remain. 28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us give thanks, by which we offer to God an acceptable worship with reverence and awe; 29 for indeed our God is a consuming fire. 3

Ten years after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, America s strategy should focus heavily on diplomacy, international civil efforts, and restoring national confidence, a panel of experts said Tuesday at the Aspen Institute. Advertise on ABJ The final talk of the 2011 McCloskey Speaker Series, titled Ten Year After 9/11, included a panel made up of former members of the Clinton and George W. Bush administrations, and the 9/11 Commission chair. They were tasked by moderator Nicholas Burns, a former ambassador to NATO, to answer the fundamental question of what the lasting impact of 9/11 is for Americans, and whether the U.S. is safer now than it was on the day of the greatest terrorist attack on U.S. soil. While most of the panel agreed that the U.S. is safer now than it was 10 years ago, 9/11 had a lasting impact on the American psyche, and very complex international problems remain that challenge politics as usual, they said. I am a person who believes 9/11 changed a great deal for America, particularly its feeling of vulnerability, said Madeleine Albright, secretary of state under Bill Clinton. We were convinced that we were safe, and we were not. And much that s happened since then is part

Ten years later, lasting impact of 9/11 is psychological 2 of 3 9/11/2011 1:16 PM of this loss of confidence. The U.S. had a wholesale change in its government institutions in the wake of the terrorist attacks establishing the Department of Homeland Security, waging the War on Terror and removing barriers between agencies to operate more effectively against threats, among other things, said Stephen Hadley, national security advisor for Bush. And those efforts have thus far prevented further mass attacks that most people thought were coming after 9/11. The good news is the dogs did not bark and the standard set after 9/11 to eliminate Al Qaeda as a threat to our way of life, I think has largely succeeded, he said. And we still have freedoms and openness in our society. But the bad news is the psychological impact has taken its toll, argued Zoe Baird Budinger, an attorney and consultant who served under Clinton on the Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board. The place we re left is where Osama bin Laden hoped we d be left, she said, citing an economy weakened by wars, the divided and fierce politics of the country, and a decline in America s place in the world, among other factors. We re in a place where people of all sorts feel they can attack our institutions, so the impact of 9/11 on the national psyche, individual psyches, confidence in ourselves and our leadership is very profound. I don t think we came together effectively [after 9/11] and we haven t recovered from that. The U.S. could make strides against terror through international relations and aid, said the panel. Albright said that one of the global umbrella issues is how to end the divide between the rich and the poor, because people without means are more recruitable to terrorist organizations. In light of that, plus issues of nuclear proliferation and terrorism in general, the diplomatic tool is going to be the most useful, she said. Albright said it is in the U.S. national interest to see that people around the world aren t starving. What has to happen is we cannot pull up the moat, Albright said, because no matter how strong the U.S. is, we cannot deal with this alone. We cannot worry only about ourselves of we will be more vulnerable. And while al Qaeda has been largely crippled by the killing of bin Laden, future threats will likely come from affiliated groups in places like Yemen and Somalia, said Hadley, where terrorists often have far more resources than the governments do. And the formula for dealing with them, he said, will include equipping and training local security forces, exchanging information with those countries, and civilian components like private industry and NGOs to support governments in areas where they need it. This is the soft side, he said. As the military piece of the War on Terror comes down, my fear is, as we have severe pressure on our budgets, we will have a tendency to cut the soft side and keep the hard side. Hadley pointed out that while the U.S. has spent the last 60 years developing a great military, we have not made the same investment in civilian capabilities. The two greatest roles foreign aid will have toward these efforts will be in global health and technology, said panelist Philip Zelikow, a history professor and chair of the 9/11 Commission. The panel touched on the internal crisis the U.S. is facing both with its budget and its partisan feuds and how the lack of confidence in the government to solve any problems adds to Americans sense of vulnerability. And Congress has done virtually nothing to implement changed recommended by the 9/11 Commission, said Zelikow. They also touched on Pakistan, which Albright dubbed the most difficult problem out there, for its nuclear capability and harboring of terrorists, among other issues. The panel agreed that cutting off Pakistan from diplomatic relations or aid is not the answer. And Hadley pointed out two hopeful things: Pakistan does have a democratic government (albeit a weak one), and Pakistanis have realized that harboring terrorists is a strategic threat to them. The U.S. has made some mistakes since 9/11 two panelists pointed out the costly war in Iraq as unnecessary, and problems with the war in Afghanistan but it also did some things very well, such as being able to preserve freedoms for most Americans. And now, they agreed, it s time to look forward. We have to not be ruled by the fear factor; we have to take this anniversary and look at what s best in us, and look at what we need to be the best, said Albright.
