7 The Ten Point Community Mediation Model Mediation helps people reach agreements, rebuild relationships, and find permanent solutions to their disputes. Mediation is a process that lets people speak for themselves and make their own decisions. Community mediation provides a non-profit framework for assuring access to mediation services at the community level with control and responsibility for dispute resolution maintained in the community. Encourage early use of mediation to prevent violence or to reduce the need for court intervention, as well as provide mediation at any stage in a dispute. 6. Mediate community-based disputes that come from referral sources including self-referrals, police, courts, community organizations, civic groups, religious institutions, government agencies and others. 7. Maintain high quality mediators by providing intensive, skills-based training, apprenticeships, continuing education and ongoing evaluation of volunteer mediators. 9. You can be a mediator. Constantly recruit for mediators Offer training at no/almost no cost Advocacy with referral agencies: remove bachelor degree/criminal background check requirements Creative solutions for other barriers to volunteering E.g. 13 Why does it matter? Point 3 III. Hold mediations in neighborhoods where disputes occur What do the places where mediation is offered say about who we are about? How far do people have to physically travel? How comfortable is the space physically and emotionally? Mediation sites are part of the movement. The criminal justice literature highlights the importance of strong relationships to support successful re-entry and to reduce recidivism. Each additional session decreases the predicted probability by another 7%. 28 #RelationshipsMatter Conflict Management Training in Drug Courts What is it? Participants are those involved in an alternative to incarceration that is focused on drug recovery. Conflict Management Training consists of two 3- hour training sessions within a week of each other. These interactive sessions allow participants to explore their experiences and choices in conflict and build new skills for collaborative conflict resolution. As trust is built, the group moves into stories that are about negative and positive interactions they have had with each other.
