2 Lent is a time to examine ourselves carefully. Here are some questions upon which you might pray and meditate during the Lent: Am I sharing gladly what I have with others, especially the stranger and the poor? Do I have a gracious and patient attitude with others, especially those who irritate me? Do I feel the power of connection to God and the church in corporate worship? How is my devotional and prayer life progressing? Am I listening to God more and complaining less? Is it time for a change or a growth in my Bible study and prayer life? What are the lurking sin problems, which still plague me? Am I as thoughtful and forgiving of family as others, or do I take my frustrations out on them? Do I speak up for the maligned and oppressed, or do I remain silent in order to remain popular? 3 BEING CHRISTIAN MEANS CARRYING EACH OTHER S BURDENS Jesus Christ carried the burden of all humans by being crucified. As followers of Christ, we are obliged to carry each other s burdens. Each of us has various burdens. It is essential to help one another, understand each other and share one another s pain. This is an imperative of love, which forms the basis of our Christian life. Instead of being indifferent to one another, gossiping about each other, we should show affectionate behavior towards each other in our families, organizations, community and national life. 4 Do you fast? Give me proof of it by your works. If you see a poor man, take pity on him. If you see a friend being honored, do not envy him. Do not let only your mouth fast, but also the eye and the ear and the feet and the hands and all the members of our bodies. Let the hands fast, by being free of avarice. Let the feet fast, by ceasing to run after sin. Let the eyes fast, by disciplining them not to glare at that which is sinful. Let the ear fast, by not listening to evil talk and gossip. Let the mouth fast from foul words and unjust criticism. For what good is it if we abstain from birds and fishes, but bite and devour our brothers? 5 This is the fast which exalts; which appeared from the First Born So as to extol the younger ones. There is occasion for delight for the discerning ones in fasting; When one sees how much he has grown. Fasting secretly purifies the soul So it can gaze on God and grow by the vision of Him. For the weight that is from the earth, bends it back to the earth. Blessed is he who gave us fasts, The sheer wings by which we fly to him. This is the instructive fast, it teaches the athlete the ways of the contest. Draw near to it, study, learn to struggle shrewdly. Behold he instructed us to fast with our mouths and hearts, Let us not fast from bread and think thoughts In which the hidden poison of death is hidden.
