3 The BAckDrop: How God Provided for Israel 1 Corinthians 10:1-5

4 1 Corinthians 10:1-4 For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and

5 1 Corinthians 10:4-5 the Rock was Christ. Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness. (ESV)

9 The Examples: Israel Committed Four Major Sins We Should Avoid 1 Corinthians 10:6-11

10 1 Corinthians 10:6-9 Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did. Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play. We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. We must

11 1 Corinthians 10:9-11 not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents, nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer. Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come. (ESV)

12 Instruction (nouthesia) To warn or admonish Used 3x (1 Cor 10:11; Eph 6:4; Titus 3:10) These instructions are more than just ordinary teachings, they carry the connotation of caution.

13 Four Major Sins Idolatry Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play. (10:7) Paul quotes from Exodus 32:5-6: Mt. Sinai and the Golden Calf.

So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live. (ESV)

19 The Warning & Promise 1 Corinthians 10:12-13

20 The Warning Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. (10:12)

21 The Promise No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. (1 Cor 10:13, ESV)

22 Two Words of Assurance God will set limits on what he will allow to happen. This does not mean that we won t be overcome by evil, or that our failures will not result in having more than we can handle. The promise is that there is nothing in this life that is so overwhelming that if we turn to God, HE can t help.

23 Two Words of Assurance God will set limits on what he will allow to happen. With temptation, God will provide a way of escape (ekbasis, 2x). A way through, a right path forward.

24 Application Remember The importance of the O.T. God does not take sin lightly. God has always provided resources for repentance and forgiveness. We must never think we are too strong to fail. We must constantly rely on the faithfulness of God.
