4 Session 10 Friday, 1:30 3:15 p.m. Test on all the Scripture we covered translation, verb forms, content; your future plan (the 2014 test on Numbers will be provided to you as a sample) Hebrew Review Helps Observations about the schedule and format The Hebrew portions for you to prepare get longer as the week progresses. We ll translate together three easy verses of Hebrew prose in the first session (no preparation required; instructor will help or will translate himself). We will be up to 7 9 verses by the last five sessions, and we will agree in advance on which verse you will be called on to translate in front of others. This is a review. No one would think to teach Hebrew this quickly the first time around. Pastoral Studies Institute students just getting started on Hebrew might take a year to go through the grammar material and related assignments. So, heads may spin during our sessions as we open up these old drawers to pull out, for example, the Hebrew perfect and the Piel conjugation. Mark Paustian heard a past participant say: It s like drinking from a fire hose. That s how it may seem at first. Experience shows that by the end of the week, participants will have pushed through this fog and will be happy to find that the objectives of the course have been achieved with God s blessing. Those include: o o o You ll each warm up your Hebrew skills to the point that original study of the Old Testament text is even more meaningful than it currently is. You ll have a realistic plan on how to continue improving. You ll be partly prepared to teach/preach on Job. More schedule observations You will have print copies of all of our grammar presentation slides, and a link to an online index of all of Tom Nass s Let s Study Hebrew materials, including his video lectures. You will have time between sessions and even more in the late afternoon and evenings to absorb and sharpen your grasp in preparation for brief quizzes. The quizzes will cover only what is most important in the grammar review. We ll also have an exam at the end of the week covering translation of selected verses from Job 1 2 and Job 42, verb analysis and content. It will all come back to you, little by little and Godwilling, with his blessing. Hopefully you ll be able to clear your plate of most other responsibilities for the sake of this experience, but your instructor understands that this may not be possible, and he will work with you any way you may need. He s a parish pastor. -4-

5 Already stressing? No need. The test and quizzes seem necessary. Some things just don t stick if one doesn t have a reason to drill them. However, you won t write Hebrew on the quizzes or exam, except for 3-letter verb roots. You ll be answering questions about grammar or recognizing forms and syntax involving the Hebrew from Job which I ll put in front of you. Don t carry stress over assessments. Your instructor has to give you a grade to you at the end of the class, and the grading will be generous, if need be, for a good faith effort among brothers. Preparing for class Where portions of the Hebrew text are listed on the schedule (after Session One) it is expected that you have prepared all those verses for that session, even if you know someone else will translate them out loud in class. Being able to read a prepared translation isn t enough. Preparation means coming to class having a translation in mind. It s okay as you study to check yourself against one like ESV or NASB. Don t turn to it first. For class prepare a rather wooden translation that reflects the Hebrew. You also must be able to analyze verb forms (such as, that rd is a 3 person singular Qal imperfect from the root ) and know the part of speech for every word (noun, verb, adverb,...). Being able to offer a second, smoother translation helps. Also, be prepared to read the Hebrew out loud before you translate the single verse assigned to you. Finally, come to class able to offer a thought or two on every verse, or to ask good questions about it. We always want to have in view how the inspired thought is advancing. Hit a snag? Ask the rest of us in class. The more we work through Job s prose sections, the more confidence you will gain. You ll surprise yourself, and we re all in class to help each other. In class don t rely on computer software (Accordance/ BibleWorks/ Logos). You may have a laptop nearby to take notes or see the text, but it may not show the Masora and the textual apparatus and you will have the text on a screen and in print. The point is that while we re together in class, software shouldn t analyze verbs for you. Your brothers will have your back. What to bring along You may bring whatever tools you have been using in working with the Hebrew text. The variety of tools men bring into the room will be a nice feature of our review. Your instructor hopes to have at least one hard copy of most of the standard professional tools available to you in our classroom, and another in the library. You probably don t need to bring grammars with you. It s okay to use electronic lexica, grammars, etc. Your instructor uses them regularly. Bring a hardcopy of Biblia Hebraic Stuttgartensia (BHS), if you re able. WLS has some for us, but other Hebrew classes are also going on. You ll also get print and.pdf copies of our BHS pages. -5-

6 Job bibliography Job commentaries and studies abound. Your instructor will provide a limited annotated bibliography for further study, especially for Bible class purposes. Special topics When Tom Nass and Mark Paustian teach Senior Hebrew at MLC they introduce items that may be of special interest. We re going to have our hands quite full just covering the assigned Scriptures and accomplishing the grammar review. However, some small spaces may open up to explore some of the following. Especially if you re interested in study 1 Samuel the following week with Tom, let me know if you d like to learn more about... Accordance/ BibleWorks (the one your instructor knows best)/ Logos Bible Software Brown-Driver-Briggs: Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon (BDB) Koehler-Baumgartner: Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon of the Old Testament (HALOT) Hebrew Grammars: Gesenius-Kautzch-Cowley (GKC), Jouon-Muraoka (J-M), Waltke-O Connor (W-O), and van der Merwe-Naude (vdm-n), published 2017 The Small and Large Masora Textual Apparatus in Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia Biblia Hebraica Quinta (Job volume to be published in 2018) and its distinctives The Aleppo and Leningrad Codices Related languages for study: Aramaic, Syriac and Ugaritic Second language attrition We tend to forget languages we don t use, so you will be asked to make a realistic plan for further use/study of Biblical Hebrew, and your instructor will suggest resources. Attire Your instructor will wear a shirt and tie in class, but you may be as comfortable/ casual as you like. Our classroom will be air-conditioned.
