11 Pilgrimage The Hebrew word translated feast (hag) may literally mean pilgrimage (cf. Arabic haj of the (Muslim) pilgrimage to Mecca). The word is used of the festivals of unleavened bread (v.6), tabernacles (v. 39), and weeks (Exodus 34:22). If this is the correct etymology, it may reflect the fact that in later times these feasts were always celebrated in the central sanctuary in Jerusalem and involved a pilgrimage for outside the town who wished to participate. 17 Passover and Unleavened Bread The passover and feast of unleavened bread served as a valuable annual period of instruction, reminding the Israelites of the theological issues involved in the exodus from Egypt, and also of the implications of covenant relationship. R.K. Harrison

21 Passover, Pashcal Offering, Protection Offering ( פ ס ח) This word can be used to describe the whole event of Passover or the animal sacrificed. There is a wide variety of opinion about the exact meaning of the word. Some connect it to a word that can mean a limp or a dance. A more likely connection is to a word meaning protection (Passover is a sacrifice for protection, not a feast).

23 Passover This liberation movement was an act of God. The Passover meal would constantly bring Israel back to that fact. They had gained their freedom, not because of Moses acute political organization, or Aaron s diplomatic skills, or because there was a popular uprising, and even less as a result of mounting a powerful army in opposition to Egypt's military forces, but because God intervened in judgment and salvation. 26 Unleavened Bread At the time of the Exodus the significance attached to eating unleavened bread was that the people were in a hurry to flee. But in the legislation of the offerings, leaven came to signify corruption that was supposed to be excluded from the meal offering and purged from the houses. The point of the Feast of Unleavened Bread then came to refer to the covenant obligations of purging corruption after celebrating redemption. Allen Ross

27 Unleavened Bread Passover commemorated the deliverance from bondage, and the Feast of Unleavened Bread reminded everyone that a life of holiness should be pursued. Allen Ross

28 Fulfillment in Christ Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough? Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed. Therefore let us celebrate the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. 1 Corinthians 5:6-8

And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you; for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins. But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father s kingdom. 35 The Power of Passover The power of Passover and I dare say the real good of it, whether you call that good serving the Lord or maintaining the life of a great people, or both lies in observing the laws of leaven from dusk of the 14th day of Nisan to darkness on the 22nd.
