Deuteronomy Good evening church, I am glad to be here with you tonight. I hope your week has been blessed. P a g e 1 Well, tonight, we will take on the next three chapters of our study of Deuteronomy. We will finish this book next time that we are together. That means as a church we will have studied through the whole Pentateuch together. You know there were doubts when we started this endeavor to teach through the Old Testament, without question these are very difficult books to study. I had one pastor explain, Well, wait until you get to Leviticus, your attendance will drop dramatically. But as we have found, if we would have skipped over these scriptures, we would have missed such a crucial understanding of God s Word. How many of you have been with us since Genesis?

P a g e 2 It has been an incredible journey thus far, and as much as I have enjoyed, I am excited to move into the Promise Land with Joshua in the coming weeks. So tonight, we will be looking at the Covenant Renewal. Remember 40 years have passed since the first Covenant was made at Horeb or Mount Sinai in Ex 24:7-8 Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read in the hearing of the people. And they said, "All that the Lord has said we will do, and be obedient." 8 And Moses took the blood, sprinkled it on the people, and said, "This is the blood of the covenant which the Lord has made with you according to all these words." Now, the Covenant here in Deuteronomy is not a New Covenant, it is an explanation and instruction for the new generation and their very new situation. They are about to cross into the Promise Land, and they are moving beyond the former generation s failure.

P a g e 3 So this Covenant is repeated for them, remember they would have been children when the first covenant was given at Horeb. Now Moses gives them their version. It is similar to our Constitution here in the United States that was signed in It effected every generation that came after the first generation differently as different situations and conditions were upon our nation. The text never changed but the relationship with the American people did. So here the relationship with the covenant and Israel is unique, because this is the conquering generation. Now, Deuteronomy is very repetitive, and Moses never seemed to tire of repeating himself, and reminding the nation of God s deliverance and showing them God s Mercy. Let s start in verse 1 of Chapter 29 The Covenant Renewed in Moab

P a g e 4 29:1 These are the words of the covenant which the Lord commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, besides the covenant which He made with them in Horeb. This time they are in Moab about to go into the Promise Land, and is altogether separate from the people at Horeb. 2 Now Moses called all Israel and said to them: "You have seen all that the Lord did before your eyes in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land 3 the great trials which your eyes have seen, the signs, and those great wonders. 4 Yet the Lord has not given you a heart to perceive and eyes to see and ears to hear, to this very day. 5 And I have led you forty years in the wilderness. Your clothes have not worn out on you, and your sandals have not worn out on your feet. 6 You have not eaten bread, nor have you drunk wine or similar drink, that you may know that I am the Lord your God. 7 And when you came to this place, Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan came out against us to battle, and we

P a g e 5 conquered them. 8 We took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, to the Gadites, and to half the tribe of Manasseh. 9 Therefore keep the words of this covenant, and do them, that you may prosper in all that you do. Moses, as he does often reviews, and reminds them of their past victories. How the Lord has been faithful to them on all accounts, and has granted them great victories against all odds. God judged the land of Egypt and delivered them from slavery. In verse 3 he reminds them of the great trials, the great signs and wonders their eyes have witnessed. And in verse four we see in spite of seeing all of this, they still did not understand all that the Lord has done. They failed to trust Him, and their trials even after such a great witness kept their heart and eyes closed.

P a g e 6 God sent them into the wilderness for forty years and even in their chastening, we see their in verse 5 that God did not allow their shoes or clothes to wear out. God did so many supernatural things for these people, and yet they still had their eyes closed to His ways. Yet a person with a disobedient heart and untrusting heart will not see God or His leading in their lives. It is when we trust and obey God that we see Him working clearly. A person that walks in unbelief draws the curtain over their heart and mind until no light is visible. The Israelites were so focused on the petty provisions of bread and wine, and their lack of that they missed the overall picture. They were like two little birds who saw a loaf of bread fall out of a basket unknowingly by the person. And a crumb fell off of it, and the two birds fighting over the crumb, and disregarding the loaf, the greater provision.

If they were not plagued with tunnel vision and only focused on the meager meal, and if they only had a little broader vision they would have both been satisfied. And Israel often fought over the crumbs and missed the great purpose that God had for them. P a g e 7 How often do we in our lives, as we focus on the petty little things in life, and get consumed with crumbs, and fail to see the bigger picture and see all that God has done in the past, and understand our future will be cared for just the same. Moses reminds them of their great victories over Sihon and Og, how they were easily conquered, and how God gave their lands to them. Moses in verse 9 explains that when they keep the words of the covenant, and do them that they will prosper in all they do. Understand a successful life, is one that is lived in obedience to God s Word. Now Moses will call for their obedience next.

P a g e 8 10 "All of you stand today before the Lord your God: your leaders and your tribes and your elders and your officers, all the men of Israel, 11 your little ones and your wives also the stranger who is in your camp, from the one who cuts your wood to the one who draws your water 12 that you may enter into covenant with the Lord your God, and into His oath, which the Lord your God makes with you today, 13 that He may establish you today as a people for Himself, and that He may be God to you, just as He has spoken to you, and just as He has sworn to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Now, all of the people are standing before the Lord, and Moses names them off in various groups, and notice he starts with the leadership. This is intentional, remember he is about to die, and the nation will look to these leaders to maintain the course Moses is setting forth on this day. As the leaders entered into this covenant the people would follow.

P a g e 9 This formal ceremony puts the leaders first, and as the people watched their commitment, they would be led by their obedience. If the leaders cannot set forth the example as God s special people, there is very little hope for the followers. It is a lesson in leadership for the church. If the leaders are halfhearted in their commitment to the Lord, if the leaders exhibit apathy and undisciplined lives for the Lord, then the rest of the Body will follow. When our pastors get together monthly, we are accountable to each other in our devotional life, our giving financially to the Lord, and our service to His ministry. It is vital that we lead with an unwavering commitment to the Lord and lead in the sacrifice to the ministry of Jesus Christ.

If you lead a ministry, understand your example set forth is so much more effective than the words you lead with. P a g e 10 And we see Moses emphasis here is on the immediate response; he over and over again tells them today their decision must be made. That God may establish them as a people for Himself, and that He may be their God, in order to fulfill His promise to their fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Next we read 14 "I make this covenant and this oath, not with you alone, 15 but with him who stands here with us today before the Lord our God, as well as with him who is not here with us today 16 (for you know that we dwelt in the land of Egypt and that we came through the nations which you passed by, 17 and you saw their abominations and their idols which were among them wood and stone and silver and gold); 18 so that there may not be among you man or woman or family or tribe, whose heart turns away today from the Lord

P a g e 11 our God, to go and serve the gods of these nations, and that there may not be among you a root bearing bitterness or wormwood; 19 and so it may not happen, when he hears the words of this curse, that he blesses himself in his heart, saying, 'I shall have peace, even though I follow the dictates of my heart' as though the drunkard could be included with the sober. 20 "The Lord would not spare him; for then the anger of the Lord and His jealousy would burn against that man, and every curse that is written in this book would settle on him, and the Lord would blot out his name from under heaven. 21 And the Lord would separate him from all the tribes of Israel for adversity, according to all the curses of the covenant that are written in this Book of the Law, 22 so that the coming generation of your children who rise up after you, and the foreigner who comes from a far land, would say, when they see the plagues of that land and the sicknesses which the Lord has laid on it: 23 'The whole land is brimstone, salt, and burning; it is not sown, nor does it bear, nor does any grass grow

P a g e 12 there, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, which the Lord overthrew in His anger and His wrath.' 24 All nations would say, 'Why has the Lord done so to this land? What does the heat of this great anger mean?' 25 Then people would say: 'Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them out of the land of Egypt; 26 for they went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods that they did not know and that He had not given to them. 27 Then the anger of the Lord was aroused against this land, to bring on it every curse that is written in this book. 28 And the Lord uprooted them from their land in anger, in wrath, and in great indignation, and cast them into another land, as it is this day.' 29 "The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.

P a g e 13 Moses makes clear here this covenant is not only for the immediate Israelites being challenged here, but for the generations to come as well. This covenant would be a perpetual covenant between God and Israel. The decision that they make on that day will affect the many generations to come. And notice the covenant does not only effect the people but also the land. Understand that little stretch of Land in Israel has flourished in times of obedience. The trees were fruitful, and the land had plenty. But when Israel disobeyed the conditions of this covenant were evident, the land turned into a barren wasteland. You can look back prior to 1948, and before the Jews started coming back to Israel, and there was nothing promising about it.

P a g e 14 And for many years anybody visiting Israel would marvel that it was called the Land of Milk and honey at one point. The land and the people go together. Now, today, the Land is flourishing, as the people are brought back. You know, I marvel that any skeptic looking at the Bible and Israel, would question God s existence. The many promises God made to these people have come true. And today, as the people come back to the land in Israel, the Jewish population is now over 6.5 million Jews in the Land. Almost 75% of the population are practicing Judaism in some form, of course not all are orthodox but there seems to be a resurgence of religion verses secular lifestyles in Israel. Now, it is interesting, after many years of this land being desolate and good for nothing, with this final

regathering of the Jews, the Land is flourishing once again. P a g e 15 Even some of the commentators I love to read, did not live to see what we can see today, a flourishing land. A Land truly flowing with milk and honey. Israel is now a major exporter of fresh produce to other nations, and a world leader in agriculture technologies. They are experiencing blessing, and as I understand prophecy, this is the final regathering of the nation of Israel. And they are being prepared for a great awakening. God will turn back to His special people, He will once again use them as the light in a very dark world. The resurgence of Israel, is a sign, that our time and dispensation is almost up. God is about to shift gears, when the church is taken out of the way, and raptured takes place, God will turn to Israel, and they will live out their final week of Daniel s prophecies.

And in the Great Tribulation Israel s eyes will be opened to Jesus as their Messiah, and they will lead the final revival until Christ s return to this earth. P a g e 16 But this text here in Deuteronomy 29, tells that first generation of what will happen to any future generation that turns from God to the worthless idols of the pagans that they are to disposes. Notice verse 19 the deceptiveness of sin, they will be so blind by their transgression they will imagine they shall not be effected. Perhaps the human judges will pass over their crimes, and they think they have gotten away with it. But God is true to His Word and God will intervene. And you know, I watch the kids today leaving the church, and especially those who have only known the church life. When they are older, they start to test their limits, maybe they go to their first party, and they get drunk, and the thrill of sin overwhelms them.

P a g e 17 And it is interesting, they think, that because they got away with it once, that it is that way always. Usually after they fall to temptation once, they might come and confess and feel horrible for a while, but when the temptation comes again, they think well, lightening did not strike, it felt great last time, why not again. And understand a person, while in the midst of the thrill of sin, it is almost impossible to reason with them. You almost have to wait until God acts, and the law of reaping and sowing take place. God will not be mocked, and especially for those who know to do good, and do not, and they sin against God, God s chastening comes. As it says in verse 20 Deut. 29:20 "The Lord would not spare him; for then the anger of the Lord and His jealousy would burn against that man, And every time Israel did this, the land was as barren and worthless as Sodom and Gomorrah.

And people have marveled that the land could ever prosper. P a g e 18 Then after the warning is given to them we see in verse 29, it says the secret things belong to the Lord, but those things revealed belong to us and our children forever, that they may obey. Now there is a lot about this universe God has not spoken on, and there is a lot of questions and uncertainty in the ways of God. However, God has revealed plainly this covenant, and what will happen to these people and the Land. And God s Word is clear in this, Israel s obedience means blessing for many. And although there is much this group of people before Moses do not understand, it is made clear they must obey. Today, in our covenant, the covenant of Grace, there is much we do not understand, we only know what God has revealed.

The mystery of our salvation is passed our understanding. P a g e 19 We only know that we are to believe in the gospel, the good news of Jesus dying for our sins, He was buried for 3 days, and on the third day He rose victorious over death, thus solidifying that His sacrifice sufficed God s Holy Wrath. We are to believe in His sacrifice for our salvation, as the means to eternal life. The secret things regarding our salvation belong to the Lord. Jesus just tells us to obey Luke 13:24 24 "Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able. We must simply believe on what we know, and trust that is enough. When we do believe unto our salvation, and Christ comes into our life, He gives an evidence to our salvation by sealing us with the Holy Spirit.

P a g e 20 It is marvelous, that from one-step of faith, so much is given to us, the how we do not know, but it happens and we are grateful. So it is revealed what will happen when they disobey, next we see the promises of what will happen when the come back to the Lord. And we are seeing chapter 30 fulfilled before our eyes today The Blessing of Returning to God 30:1 "Now it shall come to pass, when all these things come upon you, the blessing and the curse which I have set before you, and you call them to mind among all the nations where the Lord your God drives you, 2 and you return to the Lord your God and obey His voice, according to all that I command you today, you and your children, with all your heart and with all your soul, 3 that the Lord your God will bring you back from captivity, and have compassion on you, and gather you again from all the nations where the Lord your God has scattered you. 4 If any of you are driven out to the

P a g e 21 farthest parts under heaven, from there the Lord your God will gather you, and from there He will bring you. 5 Then the Lord your God will bring you to the land which your fathers possessed, and you shall possess it. He will prosper you and multiply you more than your fathers. 6 And the Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants, to love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live. 7 "Also the Lord your God will put all these curses on your enemies and on those who hate you, who persecuted you. 8 And you will again obey the voice of the Lord and do all His commandments which I command you today. 9 The Lord your God will make you abound in all the work of your hand, in the fruit of your body, in the increase of your livestock, and in the produce of your land for good. For the Lord will again rejoice over you for good as He rejoiced over your fathers, 10 if you obey the voice of the Lord your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which are written in this Book of the Law, and if you turn to the

Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. P a g e 22 Now, throughout history no nation has suffered more than the nation of Israel. But on the other hand, no nation has been given such wonderful privilege. This nation was entrusted with the oracles of God, the plan of salvation was worked through them, as the Savior of the world was a Jewish carpenter. Our faith, grows from the root stock of the Jewish faith, and our first fathers of the faith were Jewish. And such wonderful blessings have come through this nation. And here Moses is allowed to look into the future, he sees the curses that will come to them, but also the many blessings. And although they will be taken out of the land for a chastening, other generations will awaken to this covenant, and God will supernaturally bring them back to the Land.

P a g e 23 If God s people turn from their sins and return with all their heart to God and God s Word and obey the commandments they will enjoy the best life. Moses sees a time of repentance when they turn from their wicked ways. This has taken place once before when they were taken to Babylon, and returned to the Land, but when they rejected Jesus their Messiah, they were once again taken from the Land for almost 2000 years. Only today are they returning in record numbers, and I believe it is preparation for the final week, and final revival. Please, church, don t miss this great sign that is before us today regarding God s prophetic time piece, the nation of Israel. Don t ever buy into the doctrine that the church has replaced Israel, because God is not done with His people. I challenge you to only look at some of the wars Israel has been in in recent history, and you will find wars

P a g e 24 where they were outnumbered 500-1, with hand me down weaponry, and they were able to be victorious. It was only by their God s promises they were able to win. There is no doubt God s will is for an obedient Israel to be in the Land. Please see that God is literally fulfilling His promise to this nation. We see next they have a choice in regards to receiving blessing or curses. The Choice of Life or Death 11 "For this commandment which I command you today is not too mysterious for you, nor is it far off. 12 It is not in heaven, that you should say, 'Who will ascend into heaven for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?' 13 Nor is it beyond the sea, that you should say, 'Who will go over the sea for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?' 14 But the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may do it.

P a g e 25 Moses explains that although the law had a heavenly origin that is was not too difficult to understand. God had plainly explained to them His expectation. They did not need to look to the stars or travel over the sea, God picked this nation to fully reveal His Law too. Moses makes it clear the decision before them, to obey or disobey was clearly presented to them. Now, the Apostle Paul, regarding the New Covenant of faith, used this same passage. Rom 10:6-10 But the righteousness of faith speaks in this way, "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will ascend into heaven?'" (that is, to bring Christ down from above) 7 or, "'Who will descend into the abyss?'" (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart" (that is, the word of faith which we preach): 9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one

believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Our righteousness today, is imputed to us through faith. P a g e 26 The way of salvation has been plainly laid out for humanity, we do not have to exercises great feats to obtain our salvation, but only through exercising simple faith in Jesus Christ And because God did not create man as mindless robots, he gave Israel a choice life and good or death and evil, and today we are presented with the same choice. 15 "See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil, 16 in that I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments, His statutes, and His judgments, that you may live and multiply; and the Lord your God will bless you in the land which you go to possess. 17 But if your heart turns away so that you do not hear, and are drawn away, and worship other gods and serve them,

P a g e I announce to you today that you shall surely perish; you shall not prolong your days in the land which you cross over the Jordan to go in and possess. 19 I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; 20 that you may love the Lord your God, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him, for He is your life and the length of your days; and that you may dwell in the land which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them." Israel is presented with a choice to trust God and enjoy the bounties of the land, or turning to this world and its idols and experiencing death and cursing. It seems that it is obvious that they should choose life and good. Yet, mankind has this obsession with self, and for some reason they want to test God, they exalt themselves above God, and worship the creation and disregard the Creator.

It is tragic, and yet Israel chose often to reject their God and buy into the deception of this age. They paid dearly for it. P a g e 28 Now, today, the greatest power we have as humans is the ability to choose. We have a choice to run the red light or to stop. I saw a girl the other day, running off the side of the road, and when I went passed her, I saw she was taking a selfie, and she almost died, but she chose to do so, even knowing it was safer not to. We have a choice to kiss our wife goodnight or not to kiss her. I have a choice to keep preaching or I can choose to stop right now and go home. You see all day long we are given choices that have cause and effect. But there is one choice in our life that matters the greatest.

P a g e 29 It is the same choice that every man and woman since Adam and Eve had to make, God has challenged man to respond to His call to choose Him and His ways, or reject Him and His purposes. And as it was with Israel the good life, the best life, the most enjoyable life, is a life based on a relationship with God and in obedience to His Word. The power of choice has been given to every man, and even tonight, God has two paths before you, one that surely leads to destruction, and another that leads to life. I was doing a wedding on Sunday, and I mentioned in the service, that God s Word gives us clear guidelines to a healthy marriage, and today a wife submitting to her husband is offensive in our culture. A husband loving His wife as Christ has loved the church would be considered unfair. But once again, obedience to God s Word assures success.

P a g e 30 I could confidently tell that couple, they had a choice to obey God, or follow society. We all have a choice, to heed God s Word and trust it, to live it, to obey it, but once we go off on our own course there is where consequences are found. Obedience to God s Word is tantamount to a blessed life, and faith in His Sure Word, is where salvation is found. As John the Baptists preached in John 3:36 He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him." You see we all have a choice in the matter. Choice is the greatest privilege God has given mankind. So this marks the end of Moses farewell address and review of the law and renewal of the covenant. There is a still things left for Moses to do however, and one of them is appointing God s chosen leader to come after him.

P a g e 31 It is important to understand this succession is God s decision, I imagine Moses, the man, might have perhaps chosen one of his sons, or even the mighty man Caleb to lead this nation. But we see here God s choice has been groomed throughout the narrative since Exodus, and here will be the appointment. Joshua the New Leader of Israel (Num. 27:12-23) 31:1 Then Moses went and spoke these words to all Israel. 2 And he said to them: "I am one hundred and twenty years old today. I can no longer go out and come in. Also the Lord has said to me, 'You shall not cross over this Jordan.' 3 The Lord your God Himself crosses over before you; He will destroy these nations from before you, and you shall dispossess them. Joshua himself crosses over before you, just as the Lord has said. 4 And the Lord will do to them as He did to Sihon and Og, the kings of the Amorites and their land, when He destroyed them. 5 The Lord will give them over to you, that you may do to them according to every commandment which I have commanded you.

P a g e 32 6 Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you." 7 Then Moses called Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, "Be strong and of good courage, for you must go with this people to the land which the Lord has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall cause them to inherit it. 8 And the Lord, He is the One who goes before you. He will be with you, He will not leave you nor forsake you; do not fear nor be dismayed." Remember Moses was 80 years old when God called him into the ministry. Here he is now 120 years old, and he has lived a hard life wondering in the wilderness the last 40 years. He is of course forbidden to cross over the Jordan into the Promise Land because of His disobedience when he struck the Rock for water. Moses must passed the torch to young Joshua.

Moses assures the nation, God will go before them, and destroy the nations there; Joshua will be their chosen leader. P a g e 33 The Lord will grant them victory as long as they obey His commandments. Then he gives the nation the comforting Word of assurance here. Be strong and of good courage, do not be afraid, for the Lord God, He is the One who goes before you. He will not leave you or forsake you. Understand God was there always for this nation, only they can leave Him. They are promised as long they obey, God will be secure the victory. Then Moses called his successor and publically in the sight of all Israel, exhorted him with the same promise. Moses gave this challenge to them, reminding Joshua that he had experienced this victory before over Og and Sihon.

Joshua was experienced, and has been proven and prepared by the Lord. P a g e 34 The leaders in the church are to be tested men as well. In first Timothy 3 in the qualifications of an Elder and a Deacon, the Elders were not to be a novice or untested leader, and the Deacons are to be of those who have been found with a faith that has been tested. Understand this, if your calling in ministry is leadership, please know that your faith will be tested prior, as God prepares you for your calling so that when you lead others, they can trust your example. Joshua was tested, and he was prepared to lead. We will get to know Joshua even more in the weeks to come Next we read The Law to Be Read Every Seven Years 9 So Moses wrote this law and delivered it to the priests, the sons of Levi, who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and to all the elders of Israel. 10

P a g e 35 And Moses commanded them, saying: "At the end of every seven years, at the appointed time in the year of release, at the Feast of Tabernacles, 11 when all Israel comes to appear before the Lord your God in the place which He chooses, you shall read this law before all Israel in their hearing. 12 Gather the people together, men and women and little ones, and the stranger who is within your gates, that they may hear and that they may learn to fear the Lord your God and carefully observe all the words of this law, 13 and that their children, who have not known it, may hear and learn to fear the Lord your God as long as you live in the land which you cross the Jordan to possess." Moses is preparing the people for Canaan here by reminding and emphasizing the importance of God s Word. It must be the center of the community s life. Moses gave the priests this responsibility of teaching the law to Israel.

Every seven years they are to read it at the Feast of Tabernacles. God s Word was to be valued and cherished among everyone, and unto each generation. P a g e 36 I can credit my father for my love of God s Word, as I watched Him diligently read it every morning. He instilled in me the understanding, that my relationship with God relied on me reading the Book that He spoke through. When I came to Christ at 24, I immediately started reading, and I have not put it down now almost 15 years later. We see here the older generation s responsibility to teach the younger generation the place God s Word had among them. Understand, if your Bible is only collecting dust on your book shelf at home, so will your child s. Teach them now, by setting that example, even reading it as a family.

P a g e 37 We found a wonderful kids devotional to read with our kids at night, that we try to finish our day around the Word even now, it has been difficult since the baby has been here, but it is our intention to do this. They see mom and dad every morning reading it. We want to impart the importance of God s Word at a young age. That is what God is asking this nation to do. George Mueller once said, The vigor of our spiritual life will be in exact proportion to the place held by the Word in our life and thoughts. I solemnly state this from experience of fifty-four years. I have read the Bible through a hundred times and always with increasing delight. Each time it seems like a new book to me. Great has been the blessing from consecutive, diligent, daily study. Commit to reading your Bible through in a year. Many who have joined us in the yearly Bible reading we give out each month have expressed the life changing experience it has given them.

Maybe you think you don t have time, but honestly you do. P a g e 38 Perhaps before you binge watch your shows at night, first read through your Bible reading, it will bring health to your Christian living. So moving on now, Moses after giving his life to these people, and serving them fully and passionately is given the heart breaking vision and reality of what will come of the nation. Prediction of Israel's Rebellion 14 Then the Lord said to Moses, "Behold, the days approach when you must die; call Joshua, and present yourselves in the tabernacle of meeting, that I may inaugurate him." So Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves in the tabernacle of meeting. 15 Now the Lord appeared at the tabernacle in a pillar of cloud, and the pillar of cloud stood above the door of the tabernacle. 16 And the Lord said to Moses: "Behold, you will rest with your fathers; and this people will rise and play the

P a g e 39 harlot with the gods of the foreigners of the land, where they go to be among them, and they will forsake Me and break My covenant which I have made with them. 17 Then My anger shall be aroused against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide My face from them, and they shall be devoured. And many evils and troubles shall befall them, so that they will say in that day, 'Have not these evils come upon us because our God is not among us?' 18 And I will surely hide My face in that day because of all the evil which they have done, in that they have turned to other gods. 19 "Now therefore, write down this song for yourselves, and teach it to the children of Israel; put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for Me against the children of Israel. 20 When I have brought them to the land flowing with milk and honey, of which I swore to their fathers, and they have eaten and filled themselves and grown fat, then they will turn to other gods and serve them; and they will provoke Me and break My covenant. 21 Then it shall be, when many

P a g e 40 evils and troubles have come upon them, that this song will testify against them as a witness; for it will not be forgotten in the mouths of their descendants, for I know the inclination of their behavior today, even before I have brought them to the land of which I swore to give them." 22 Therefore Moses wrote this song the same day, and taught it to the children of Israel. 23 Then He inaugurated Joshua the son of Nun, and said, "Be strong and of good courage; for you shall bring the children of Israel into the land of which I swore to them, and I will be with you." 24 So it was, when Moses had completed writing the words of this law in a book, when they were finished, 25 that Moses commanded the Levites, who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord, saying: 26 "Take this Book of the Law, and put it beside the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, that it may be there as a witness against you; 27 for I know your rebellion and your stiff neck. If today, while I am yet alive with you, you have been rebellious against the Lord, then how

P a g e 41 much more after my death? 28 Gather to me all the elders of your tribes, and your officers, that I may speak these words in their hearing and call heaven and earth to witness against them. 29 For I know that after my death you will become utterly corrupt, and turn aside from the way which I have commanded you. And evil will befall you in the latter days, because you will do evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke Him to anger through the work of your hands." The Song of Moses 30 Then Moses spoke in the hearing of all the assembly of Israel the words of this song until they were ended: And we will learn the song next week. But Moses is instructed here to bring Joshua to the tabernacle. God speaking from the glory cloud tells the two men that Israel will turn away from Him and true worship. Notice in verse 20, it is their own hearts that will turn against the Lord, no outside force will cause this.

P a g e 42 They will be fat in their blessing and that is when their hearts will turn from Him. Moses was to prepare the song we will look at next week as a witness against them. It will be a song that the children of Israel could easily learn and remember throughout the generations. It will remind them of the dangers of idolatry and the consequences of apostasy, and will remind them of the goodness of God. Moses here right before this song gives them a solemn reminder that after his death they would abandoned the Lord and invite the chastening of the Lord. Perhaps Joshua, who is silent through all of this, is thinking Moses should choose someone else, the reality of their moral failure would be overwhelming to him, knowing even during his leadership, the people will produce mixed results. In verse 23, Moses reminded Joshua, his calling was from the Lord, and no matter the outcome, he was to serve the Lord with strength and courage, because God

will strengthen him to bring them into Canaan, and God will be with him. P a g e 43 That had to be a boost for Joshua after hearing the fate of the people. And the reality of leadership, especially spiritual leadership is it is a lonely position. It is human to stand with the crowd, but it is Divine to stand alone. Maxwell p. 329 Church understand you are each called into the ministry of the Gospel wherever you are. Your life is in the service of your God, and sometimes that is unpopular, but know even if you are alone in your workplace or even among your friends and family in your commitment. Know that God is with you, and God plus anyone is the majority. Church do not grow weary in our hostile obstante culture while doing good, instead be strong and very courageous.

Your mission is from above, and you have eternal rewards to look forward too. P a g e 44 Ministry as Moses and Joshua are realizing here can be disappointing, it does not matter how clearly truth can be presented, people will do what is right in their own minds instead. But that should not discourage us or change our stance. I know, in ministry, wherever you are, the temptation can be to get a hard heart toward people, if you are not careful you can become untrusting and isolated. I look back at so many people in ministry that have now walked away from the Lord, but God continually reminds me of the victories in the ministry, when my own Og and Sihons have been slain. I see those who are still walking with the Lord, those whose lives are still changed by that wonderful gospel. And it s the victories that keep me moving forward trusting God for more ahead.

P a g e 45 Church do not get discouraged, keep plodding along, in the end it will be worth it. Tonight, we are going to do something a little different. I want to end with us on our knees tonight, there are many hurting and suffering in our ministry. Some are growing weary, the battle is intensifying and some are finding the battle all too intense. But before we sing this last song, let us here tonight go to battle. And we will pray in silence for a minute or two, but battle for those that you know are struggling tonight, pray for the work of the ministry here in Victorville, and may God stir our hearts and strengthen us this week. If you are at home online, we will keep the feed live, so you can join us, and then join in the last song. Let s pray together as a body tonight.
