A Journey Back to

THE ULTIMATE VICTORY Tailored with soul provoking pictures and/or paintings on each page, this Evangelizationbased endeavor has been produced to share the events in the earthly life of Jesus of Nazareth, beginning with His Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. This initiative concludes with Christ s Ascension to His Mercy Seat at the right hand of His Father. All Scriptures contained herein are excerpted from the New American Bible (NABRE).

Jesus Enters Jerusalem PALM SUNDAY Matthew 21:1-11 Mark 11:1-11 Luke 19:28-40 John 12:12-19 Jesus humbly entering Jerusalem riding a donkey (or colt) is mentioned in all 4 Gospels. As people lay their cloaks and palm branches down in front of Jesus as a sign of respect as Him as He enters the City, they sing and shout with joy, Hosanna in the highest! But was He the Savior they were expecting? Only a few short days later, Jesus will hear the shouts, "Crucify Him, crucify Him!"

Jesus Cleanses the Temple JESUS CLEANSES THE TEMPLE (Matthew 21:12-16; Mark 11:15-17; Luke 19:45-46; John 2:13-25) Jesus entered the temple area and drove out all those engaged in selling and buying there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves. And He said to them, It is written: My house shall be a house of prayer, but you are making it a den of thieves. Jesus was fulfilling Scripture as He referenced as 'being written from the Old Testament in Jeremiah 7:11 and Zechariah 9:9.

Jesus Teaches in the Temple JESUS TEACHES IN TEMPLE; RELIGIOUS LEADERS PLOT TO KILL (Mark 11:18, Luke 19:47-48) And every day, He (Jesus) was teaching in the temple area. The chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people, meanwhile, were seeking to put Him to death, but they could find no way to accomplish their purpose because all the people were hanging on His words.

Jesus Curses the Fig Tree JESUS CURSES THE FIG TREE (Matthew 21:18-22; Mark 11:12-14, Luke 13:6-9) The next day as they were leaving Bethany, He was hungry. Seeing from a distance a fig tree in leaf, He went over to see if He could find anything on it. When He reached it, He found nothing but leaves; it was not the time for figs. And He said to it in reply, May no one ever eat of your fruit again! And His disciples heard it. Was the response of Jesus a reflection of His state of hunger or His view of the Nation of Israel and their disobedience to follow God?

Authority of Jesus Questioned AUTHORITY OF JESUS QUESTIONED (Matthew 21:23-27; Mark 11:27-33; Luke 20:1-8) They returned once more to Jerusalem. As He was walking in the temple area, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders approached Him and said to him, By what authority are you doing these things? Or who gave you this authority to do them? Jesus said to them, I shall ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. Was John s baptism of heavenly or of human origin? Answer me. They discussed this among themselves and said, If we say, Of heavenly origin, he will say, [Then] why did you not believe him? But shall we say, Of human origin? they feared the crowd, for they all thought John really was a prophet. So they said to Jesus in reply, We do not know. Then Jesus said to them, Neither shall I tell you by what authority I do these things.

Parable of the Two Sons PARABLE OF THE TWO SONS (Matthew 21:28-32) A father has two sons and asks them to go to work in the vineyard. The first one says no, but then he does; the second son says yes, but then he does not. Which of the two sons did what the father wanted? The focus of the vineyard in the photo - in lieu of the two sons - shows the magnitude of the labor and responsibility involved in owning a vineyard.

Parable of the Tenants PARABLE OF THE TENANTS (Matthew 21:33-46; Mark 12:1-12; Luke 20:9-19). A man planted a vineyard, leased it to tenant farmers, and then went on a journey for a long time. At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenant farmers to receive some of the produce of the vineyard. But they beat the servant and sent him away empty-handed. So he proceeded to send another servant, but him also they beat and insulted and sent away empty-handed. Then he proceeded to send a third, but this one too they wounded and threw out. The owner of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I shall send my beloved son; maybe they will respect him. But when the tenant farmers saw him they said to one another, This is the heir. Let us kill him that the inheritance may become ours. So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. * What will the owner of the vineyard do to them? He will come and put those tenant farmers to death and turn over the vineyard to others. Jesus delivered a message regarding this story and the teachers of the law and chief priests knew this was referring to them. They looked for a way to kill Jesus.

Parable of the Wedding Feast PARABLE OF THE WEDDING FEAST (Matthew 22:1-14; Luke 14:15-24). Jesus invites us all to the Banquet Table; have we sent our RSVP? Jesus again in reply spoke to them in parables, saying, The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who gave a wedding feast * for his son. He dispatched his servants to summon the invited guests to the feast, but they refused to come. A second time he sent other servants, saying, Tell those invited: Behold, I have prepared my banquet, my calves and fattened cattle are killed, and everything is ready; come to the feast. Some ignored the invitation and went away, one to his farm, another to his business. The rest laid hold of his servants, mistreated them, and killed them. The king was enraged and sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city. Then he said to his servants, The feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy to come. Go out, therefore, into the main roads and invite to the feast whomever you find. Please examine the Scriptures listed above to read the rest of the account.

Render Unto Caesar PAYING TAXES TO THE EMPEROR (Matthew 22:15-22; Mark 12:13-17; Luke 20:20-26) Then the Pharisees went off and plotted how they might entrap Him in speech. They sent their disciples to Him, with the Herodians, saying, Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. And you are not concerned with anyone s opinion, for you do not regard a person s status. Tell us, then, what is your opinion: Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not? Knowing their malice, Jesus said, Why are you testing me, you hypocrites? Show me the coin that pays the census tax. Then they handed him the Roman coin. He said to them, Whose image is this and whose inscription? They replied, Caesar s. At that He said to them, Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God. When they heard this they were amazed, and leaving Him they went away.

Question About the Resurrection QUESTION ABOUT THE RESURRECTION (Matthew 22:23-33; Mark 12:18-27; Luke 20:27-40). On that day, Sadducees approached Him, saying that there is no resurrection. They put this question to Him, saying, Teacher, Moses said, If a man dies without children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up descendants for his brother. Now there were seven brothers among us. The first married and died and, having no descendants, left his wife to his brother. The same happened with the second and the third, through all seven. Finally the woman died. Now at the resurrection, of the seven, whose wife will she be? For they all had been married to her. Jesus said to them in reply, You are misled because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. At the resurrection, they neither marry nor are given in marriage but are like the angels in Heaven. And concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God, I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? He is not the God of the dead but of the living. When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.

The Greatest Commandment THE GREATEST COMMANDMENT (Matthew 22:34-40; Mark 12:28-34; Luke 10:25-28) When the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them [a scholar of the law] tested Him by asking, Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest? He said to him, You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.

Parable of the Good Samaritan PARABLE OF THE GOOD SAMARITAN (Luke 10:29-37) But because he wished to justify himself, he said to Jesus, And who is my neighbor? Jesus replied, A man fell victim to robbers as he went down from Jerusalem to Jericho. They stripped and beat him and went off leaving him half-dead. A priest happened to be going down that road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. Likewise a Levite came to the place, and when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him was moved with compassion at the sight. He approached the victim, poured oil and wine over his wounds and bandaged them. Then he lifted him up on his own animal, took him to an inn and cared for him. The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper with the instruction, Take care of him. If you spend more than what I have given you, I shall repay you on my way back. Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers victim? He answered, The one who treated him with mercy. Jesus said to him, Go and do likewise.

Martha & Mary MARTHA AND MARY (Luke 10:38-42) As they continued their journey, He entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed Him. She had a sister named Mary [who] sat beside the Lord at His feet listening to Him speak. Martha, burdened with much serving, came to Him and said, Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me. The Lord said to her in reply, Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her. Question- are you a Martha or a Mary?

Question About David s Son QUESTION ABOUT DAVID S SON (Matthew 22:41-46; Mark 12:35-37; Luke 20:41-44). While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus questioned them, saying, What is your opinion about the Messiah? Whose son is he? They replied, David s. He said to them, How, then, does David, inspired by the Spirit, call him lord, saying: The Lord said to my lord, Sit at my right hand until I place your enemies under your feet? If David calls him lord, how can he be his son? No one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day on did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.

FALSE TEACHERS DENUNCIATION OF THE SCRIBES & PHARISEES (Matthew 23:1-36; Mark 12:38-40; Luke 11:37-54 & 20:45-47) Jesus calls out the Jewish leadership for not leading by example and exposes them for leaning on legalism and head knowledge. Please take time to examine the Scriptures listed above, for it is important for us to apply in our own lives what Jesus said here.

A Widow's Offering THE POOR WIDOW S CONTRIBUTION (Mark 12:41-44; Luke 21:1-4) He (Jesus) sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents. Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood.

Jesus Laments Over Jerusalem JESUS LAMENTS OVER JERUSALEM (Matthew 23:37-39; Luke 13:34-35 & 19:41-44) Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how many times I yearned to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her young under her wings, but you were unwilling! Behold, your house will be abandoned, desolate. I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Destruction of the Temple Foretold DESTRUCTION OF THE TEMPLE FORETOLD (Matthew 24:1-2; Mark 13:1-2; Luke 21:5-6, John 2:18-25) Jesus left the temple area and was going away, when his disciples approached him to point out the temple buildings. He said to them in reply, You see all these things, do you not? Amen, I say to you, there will not be left here a stone upon another stone that will not be thrown down.

Beginning of Calamities THE BEGINNING OF CALAMITIES (Matthew 24:3-8; Mark 13:3-8; Luke 21:7-11; John 5:41-47) As He was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples approached Him privately and said, Tell us, when will this happen, and what sign will there be of your coming, and of the end of the age? Jesus said to them in reply, See that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, saying, I am the Messiah, and they will deceive many. You will hear of wars and reports of wars; see that you are not alarmed, for these things must happen, but it will not yet be the end. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be famines and earthquakes from place to place. All these are the beginning of the labor pains. Then they will hand you over to persecution, and they will kill you. You will be hated by all nations because of my name. And then many will be led into sin; they will betray and hate one another. Many false prophets will arise and deceive many; and because of the increase of evildoing, the love of many will grow cold. But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached throughout the world as a witness to all nations, and then the end will come.

The Coming Persecution THE COMING PERSECUTION (Matthew 24:9-14; Mark 13:9-13; Luke 21:12-19) Then they will hand you over to persecution, and they will kill you.

The Great Tribulation THE GREAT TRIBULATION (Matthew 24:15-28; Mark 13:14-23; Luke 21:20-24) When you see the desolating abomination spoken of through Daniel the prophet standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), then those in Judea must flee to the mountains, a person on the housetop must not go down to get things out of his house, a person in the field must not return to get his cloak. Woe to pregnant women and nursing mothers in those days. Pray that your flight not be in winter or on the sabbath, for at that time there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will be. And if those days had not been shortened, no one would be saved; but for the sake of the elect they will be shortened. If anyone says to you then, Look, here is the Messiah! or, There he is! do not believe it. False messiahs and false prophets will arise, and they will perform signs and wonders so great as to deceive, if that were possible, even the elect. Behold, I have told it to you beforehand. So if they say to you, He is in the desert, do not go out there; if they say, He is in the inner rooms, do not believe it. For just as lightning comes from the east and is seen as far as the west, so will the coming of the Son of Man be. Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.

The Coming of the Son of Man THE COMING OF THE SON OF MAN (Matthew 24:29-31; Mark 13:24-27; Luke 21:25-28) Immediately after the tribulation of those days, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming upon the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he will send out his angels with a trumpet blast, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

The Lesson of the Fig Tree THE LESSON OF THE FIG TREE Matthew 24:32-35 Mark 13:28-31 Luke 21:29-33 Learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves, you know that summer is near. In the same way, when you see all these things, know that he is near, at the gates. Amen, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

The Unknown Day & Hour THE UNKNOWN DAY AND HOUR (Matthew 24:36-44; Mark 13:32-37; Luke 21:29-33) But of that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone. For as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. In [those] days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day that Noah entered the ark. They did not know until the flood came and carried them all away. So will it be [also] at the coming of the Son of Man. Two men will be out in the field; one will be taken, and one will be left. Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken, and one will be left. Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come. Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour of night when the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and not let his house be broken into. So too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.

The Faithful or Unfaithful Servant THE FAITHFUL OR THE UNFAITHFUL SERVANT (Matthew 24:45-51; Luke 12:35-48) Who, then, is the faithful and prudent servant, whom the master has put in charge of his household to distribute to them their food at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master on his arrival finds doing so. Amen, I say to you, he will put him in charge of all his property. But if that wicked servant says to himself, My master is long delayed, and begins to beat his fellow servants, and eat and drink with drunkards, the servant s master will come on an unexpected day and at an unknown hour and will punish him severely and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.

Do You Have Oil In Your Lamp? THE PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINS (Matthew 25:1-13) Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones, when taking their lamps, brought no oil with them, but the wise brought flasks of oil with their lamps. Since the bridegroom was long delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep. At midnight, there was a cry, Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him! Then all those virgins got up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out. But the wise ones replied, No, for there may not be enough for us and you. Go instead to the merchants and buy some for yourselves. While they went off to buy it, the bridegroom came and those who were ready went into the wedding feast with him. Then the door was locked. Afterwards the other virgins came and said, Lord, Lord, open the door for us! But he said in reply, Amen, I say to you, I do not know you. Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.

The Parable of the Talents THE PARABLE OF THE TALENTS (Matthew 25:14-30; Luke 19:11-27) It will be as when a man who was going on a journey called in his servants and entrusted his possessions to them. To one he gave five talents; to another, two; to a third, one to each according to his ability. Then he went away. Immediately the one who received five talents went and traded with them, and made another five. Likewise, the one who received two made another two. But the man who received one went off and dug a hole in the ground and buried his master s money. After a long time the master of those servants came back and settled accounts with them. The one who had received five talents came forward bringing the additional five. He said, Master, you gave me five talents. See, I have made five more. His master said to him, Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master s joy. [Then] the one who had received two talents also came forward and said, Master, you gave me two talents. See, I have made two more. His master said to him, Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master s joy. Then the one who had received the one talent came forward and said, Master, I knew you were a demanding person, harvesting where you did not plant and gathering where you did not scatter; so out of fear I went off and buried your talent in the ground. Here it is back. His master said to him in reply, You wicked, lazy servant! * So you knew that I harvest where I did not plant and gather where I did not scatter? Should you not then have put my money in the bank so that I could have got it back with interest on my return? Now then! Take the talent from him and give it to the one with ten. For to everyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich; but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. And throw this useless servant into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.

The Judgment of the Nations THE JUDGMENT OF THE NATIONS (Matthew 25:31-46) When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit upon his glorious throne, and all the nations will be assembled before him. And he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. Then the king will say to those on his right, Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me. Then the righteous * will answer him and say, Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you? And the king will say to them in reply, Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me. Then he will say to those on his left, Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me. Then they will answer and say, Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs? He will answer them, Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me. And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.

The Conspiracy Against Jesus THE CONSPIRACY AGAINST JESUS (Matthew 26:1-5; Mark 14:1-2; Luke 22:1-6; John 11:45-54) When Jesus finished all these words, He said to his disciples, You know that in two days time it will be Passover, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified. Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, and they consulted together to arrest Jesus by treachery and put Him to death. But they said, Not during the festival, that there may not be a riot among the people.

The Anointing at Bethany THE ANOINTING AT BETHANY (Matthew 26:6-13; Mark 14:3-9; John 12:1-11) Now when Jesus was in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, a woman came up to Him with an alabaster jar of costly perfumed oil, and poured it on His head while he was reclining at table. When the disciples saw this, they were indignant and said, Why this waste? It could have been sold for much, and the money given to the poor. Since Jesus knew this, He said to them, Why do you make trouble for the woman? She has done a good thing for me. The poor you will always have with you; but you will not always have me. In pouring this perfumed oil upon my body, she did it to prepare me for burial. Amen, I say to you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be spoken of, in memory of her. Note that John s Gospel gives this account to have taken place six days before the Passover and that the feet of Jesus were also anointed.

The Betrayal By Judas THE BETRAYAL BY JUDAS Matthew 26:14-16 Mark 14:10-11 Luke 22:1-6 Then one of the Twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, What are you willing to give me if I hand Him over to you? They paid him thirty pieces of silver, and from that time on he looked for an opportunity to hand Him over.

Preparations for the Passover PREPARATIONS FOR THE PASSOVER Matthew 26:17-19 Mark 14:12-16 Luke 22:7-13 On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the disciples approached Jesus and said, Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover? He said, Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, The teacher says, My appointed time draws near; in your house I shall celebrate the Passover with my disciples. The disciples then did as Jesus had ordered, and prepared the Passover.

The Betrayer THE BETRAYER Matthew 26:20-25; Mark 14:17-21; Luke 22:21-23; John 13:21-30 When it was evening, He reclined at table with the Twelve. And while they were eating, He said, Amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me. Deeply distressed at this, they began to say to him one after another, Surely it is not I, Lord? He said in reply, He who has dipped his hand into the dish with me is the one who will betray me. The Son of Man indeed goes, as it is written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed. It would be better for that man if he had never been born. Then Judas, his betrayer, said in reply, Surely it is not I, Rabbi? He answered, You have said so.

The Lord s Supper THE LORD S SUPPER (Matthew 26:26-30; Mark 14:22-26; Luke 22:14-20) While they were eating, Jesus took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and giving it to His disciples said, Take and eat; this is my body. Then He took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, from now on I shall not drink this fruit of the vine until the day when I drink it with you new in the kingdom of my Father. Then, after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Washing of the Disciples Feet

Washing of the Disciples Feet WASHING OF THE DISCIPLES FEET (John 13:1-20) Before the feast of Passover, Jesus knew that His hour had come to pass from this world to the Father. He loved His own in the world and He loved them to the end. The devil had already induced Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot, to hand Him over. So, during Supper, fully aware that the Father had put everything into His power and that He had come from God and was returning to God, He rose from supper and took off his outer garments. He took a towel and tied it around His waist. Then He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples feet and dry them with the towel around His waist. He came to Simon Peter, who said to Him, Master, are you going to wash my feet? Jesus answered and said to him, What I am doing, you do not understand now, but you will understand later. Peter said to Him, You will never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, Unless I wash you, you will have no inheritance with me. Simon Peter said to Him, Master, then not only my feet, but my hands and head as well. Jesus said to him, Whoever has bathed has no need except to have his feet washed, for he is clean all over; so you are clean, but not all. For He knew who would betray him; for this reason, He said, Not all of you are clean. So when He had washed their feet [and] put His garments back on and reclined at table again, He said to them, Do you realize what I have done for you? You call me teacher and master, and rightly so, for indeed I am. If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another s feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do. Amen, amen, I say to you, no slave is greater than his master nor any messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you understand this, blessed are you if you do it. I am not speaking of all of you. I know those whom I have chosen. But so that the scripture might be fulfilled, The one who ate my food has raised his heel against me. From now on I am telling you before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe that I AM. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.

Role of the Disciples ROLE OF THE DISCIPLES (Luke 22:24-30) Then an argument broke out among them about which of them should be regarded as the greatest. He said to them, The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them and those in authority over them are addressed as Benefactors ; but among you it shall not be so. Rather, let the greatest among you be as the youngest, and the leader as the servant. For who is greater: the one seated at table or the one who serves? Is it not the one seated at table? I am among you as the one who serves. It is you who have stood by me in my trials; and I confer a kingdom on you, just as my Father has conferred one on me, that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom; and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

The New Commandment THE NEW COMMANDMENT (John 13:31-35) When he (Judas) had left, Jesus said, Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. [If God is glorified in him,] God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him at once. My children, I will be with you only a little while longer. You will look for me, and as I told the Jews, Where I go you cannot come, so now I say it to you. I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.

Peter s Denial Foretold PETER S DENIAL FORETOLD (Matthew 26:31-35; Mark 14:27-31; Luke 22:31-34; John 13:36-38) Simon Peter said to Him, Master, where are you going? Jesus answered [him], Where I am going, you cannot follow me now, though you will follow later. Peter said to Him, Master, why can t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you. Jesus answered, Will you lay down your life for me? Amen, amen, I say to you, the cock will not crow before you deny me three times.

Last Supper Discourses LAST SUPPER DISCOURSES (John 14:1-14) Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me. In my Father s house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be. Where [I] am going you know the way. Thomas said to him, Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way? Jesus said to him, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him. Philip said to him, Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us. Jesus said to him, Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, Show us the Father? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own. The Father who dwells in me is doing his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else, believe because of the works themselves. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father. And whatever you ask in my name, I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything of me in my name, I will do it.

The Advocate THE ADVOCATE (John 14:15-31) If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of truth, which the world cannot accept, because it neither sees nor knows it. But you know it, because it remains with you, and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me, because I live and you will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father and you are in me and I in you. Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me. And whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him. Judas, not the Iscariot, said to him, Master, [then] what happened that you will reveal yourself to us and not to the world? Jesus answered and said to him, Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; yet the word you hear is not mine but that of the Father who sent me. I have told you this while I am with you. The Advocate, the holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name he will teach you everything and remind you of all that [I] told you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid. You heard me tell you, I am going away and I will come back to you. If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father; for the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you this before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe. I will no longer speak much with you, for the ruler of the world is coming. He has no power over me, but the world must know that I love the Father and that I do just as the Father has commanded me. Get up, let us go.

Instructions for Time of Crisis INSTRUCTIONS FOR TIME OF CRISIS (Luke 22:35-38) He said to them, When I sent you forth without a money bag or a sack or sandals, were you in need of anything? No, nothing, they replied. He said to them, But now one who has a money bag should take it, and likewise a sack, and one who does not have a sword should sell his cloak and buy one. For I tell you that this scripture must be fulfilled in me, namely, He was counted among the wicked ; and indeed what is written about me is coming to fulfillment. Then they said, Lord, look, there are two swords here. But He replied, It is enough!

THE VINE & THE BRANCHES (John 15:1-17) I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower. He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and everyone that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit. You are already pruned because of the word that I spoke to you. Remain in me, as I remain in you. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing. Anyone who does not remain in me will be thrown out like a branch and wither; people will gather them and throw them into a fire and they will be burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask for whatever you want and it will be done for you. By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples. As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father s commandments and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete. This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one s life for one s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father. It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you. This I command you: love one another.

The World s Hatred THE WORLD S HATRED (John 15:18-16:4) If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first. Take time to read the entire Scripture outlined above, as Jesus expounds on the hostile reaction of the world to His Message of Love and Forgiveness.

Jesus Departure/Coming of the Advocate

Jesus Departure/Coming of the Advocate JESUS DEPARTURE / COMING OF THE ADVOCATE (John 16:5-33) I did not tell you this from the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going to the one who sent me, and not one of you asks me, Where are you going? But because I told you this, grief has filled your hearts. But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go. For if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and condemnation: sin, because they do not believe in me; righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see me; condemnation, because the ruler of this world has been condemned. I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that are coming. He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you. Everything that the Father has is mine; for this reason I told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you. A little while and you will no longer see me, and again a little while later and you will see me. So some of his disciples said to one another, What does this mean that he is saying to us, A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me, and Because I am going to the Father? So they said, What is this little while [of which he speaks]? We do not know what he means. Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, Are you discussing with one another what I said, A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me? Amen, amen, I say to you, you will weep and mourn, while the world rejoices; you will grieve, but your grief will become joy. When a woman is in labor, she is in anguish because her hour has arrived; but when she has given birth to a child, she no longer remembers the pain because of her joy that a child has been born into the world. So you also are now in anguish. But I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you. On that day you will not question me about anything. Amen, amen, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you. Until now you have not asked anything in my name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete. I have told you this in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures but I will tell you clearly about the Father. On that day you will ask in my name, and I do not tell you that I will ask the Father for you. For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have come to believe that I came from God. I came from the Father and have come into the world. Now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father. His disciples said, Now you are talking plainly, and not in any figure of speech. Now we realize that you know everything and that you do not need to have anyone question you. Because of this we believe that you came from God. Jesus answered them, Do you believe now? Behold, the hour is coming and has arrived when each of you will be scattered to his own home and you will leave me alone. But I am not alone, because the Father is with me. I have told you this so that you might have peace in me. In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world.

Agony in the Garden/Prayer of Jesus AGONY IN THE GARDEN / PRAYER OF JESUS (Matthew 26:36-46; Mark 14:32-42; Luke 22:39-46; John 17:1-26) Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, Sit here while I go over there and pray. He took along Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to feel sorrow and distress. Then he said to them, My soul is sorrowful even to death. Remain here and keep watch with me. He advanced a little and fell prostrate in prayer, saying, My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet, not as I will, but as you will. When he returned to his disciples he found them asleep. He said to Peter, So you could not keep watch with me for one hour? Watch and pray that you may not undergo the test. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. Withdrawing a second time, he prayed again, My Father, if it is not possible that this cup pass without my drinking it, your will be done! Then he returned once more and found them asleep, for they could not keep their eyes open. He left them and withdrew again and prayed a third time, saying the same thing again. Then he returned to his disciples and said to them, Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Behold, the hour is at hand when the Son of Man is to be handed over to sinners. Get up, let us go. Look, my betrayer is at hand.

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus THE BETRAYAL AND ARREST OF JESUS (Matthew 26:47-56; Mark 14:43-52; Luke 22:47-53; John 18:1-14) While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived, accompanied by a large crowd, with swords and clubs, who had come from the chief priests and the elders of the people. His betrayer had arranged a sign with them, saying, The man I shall kiss is the one; arrest him. Immediately he went over to Jesus and said, Hail, Rabbi! and he kissed him. Jesus answered him, Friend, do what you have come for. Then stepping forward they laid hands on Jesus and arrested him. And behold, one of those who accompanied Jesus put his hand to his sword, drew it, and struck the high priest s servant, cutting off his ear. Then Jesus said to him, Put your sword back into its sheath, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. Do you think that I cannot call upon my Father and he will not provide me at this moment with more than twelve legions of angels? But then how would the scriptures be fulfilled which say that it must come to pass in this way? At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to seize me? Day after day I sat teaching in the temple area, yet you did not arrest me. But all this has come to pass that the writings of the prophets may be fulfilled. Then all the disciples left him and fled.

The Six Trials of Jesus THREE RELIGIOUS (JEWISH) TRIALS OF JESUS (Matthew 26:57-68; 27:1-2 / Mark 14:53-65 / Luke 22:66-71 / John 18:12-14; 18: ) BEFORE ANNAS: Hearing before Annas, former Jewish High Priest for 16 years - Jesus receives initial physical abuse. 2) BEFORE CAIAPHAS: Hearing before the current Jewish High Priest, Caiaphas, and the Sanhedrin Court - Jesus bloodied by abuse. Imprisonment at Caiaphas' palace. 3) BEFORE THE SANHEDRIN: Hearing before all the Jewish elders, including the High Priest, Scribes and whole Sanhedrin. They decide to ask the Roman government to kill Jesus. THREE CIVIC (ROMAN) TRIALS OF JESUS (Matthew 27:11-26 / Mark 15:1-15 / Luke 23:1-25 / John 18:28-19:16 4) BEFORE PONTIUS PILATE: Hearing before Roman governor Pilate, who declares, "I find no guilt in this man." 5) BEFORE HEROD: Hearing before Herod Antipas, the son of Herod the Great, who had jurisdiction over Galilee. Jesus refused to answer any questions so Herod returned Him quickly to Pilate. 6) BEFORE PONTIUS PILATE: Hearing again before Pilate, who repeatedly tried to release Jesus, but the Jewish leaders continued to object. Pilate ordered the physical torture and beating of Jesus, seeking to satisfy the Jewish leaders. However, the Jews demanded that Jesus be crucified. Pilate resisted, but eventually gave the order to execute Jesus. He notes on the sign on the cross that His crime was being the King of the Jews. This was probably done to avoid trouble with Rome (No king but Caesar).

Trial I- Inquiry before Annas INQUIRY BEFORE ANNAS (John 18:19-24) So the band of soldiers, the tribune, and the Jewish guards seized Jesus, bound him, and brought him to Annas first. He was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, high priest that year. It was Caiaphas who had counseled the Jews that it was better that one man should die rather than the people. The high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his doctrine. Jesus answered him, I have spoken publicly to the world. I have always taught in a synagogue or in the temple area where all the Jews gather, and in secret I have said nothing. Why ask me? Ask those who heard me what I said to them. They know what I said. When he had said this, one of the temple guards standing there struck Jesus and said, Is this the way you answer the high priest? Jesus answered him, If I have spoken wrongly, testify to the wrong; but if I have spoken rightly, why do you strike me? Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.

Trial II - Jesus before Caiaphas TRIAL II: JESUS BEFORE CAIAPHAS (Matthew 26, Mark 14, Luke 22 and John 18) All four Gospels reference Jesus standing trial before the Jewish High Priest or Caiaphas.

Trial III: Jesus before the Sanhedrin

Trial III: Jesus before the Sanhedrin JESUS BEFORE THE SANHEDRIN (Matthew 26:57-68; Mark 14:53-65; Luke 22:66-71) Those who had arrested Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. Peter was following him at a distance as far as the high priest s courtyard, and going inside he sat down with the servants to see the outcome. The chief priests and the entire Sanhedrin kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus in order to put him to death, but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward who stated, This man said, I can destroy the temple of God and within three days rebuild it. The high priest rose and addressed him, Have you no answer? What are these men testifying against you? But Jesus was silent. Then the high priest said to him, I order you to tell us under oath before the living God whether you are the Messiah, the Son of God. Jesus said to him in reply, You have said so. But I tell you: From now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven. Then the high priest tore his robes and said, He has blasphemed! What further need have we of witnesses? You have now heard the blasphemy; what is your opinion? They said in reply, He deserves to die! Then they spat in his face and struck him, while some slapped him, saying, Prophesy for us, Messiah: who is it that struck you?

Peter s Denial of Jesus PETER S DENIAL OF JESUS (Matthew 26:69-75; Mark 14:66-72; Luke 22:54-65; John 18:15-18 and 18:25-27) Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. One of the maids came over to him and said, You too were with Jesus the Galilean. But he denied it in front of everyone, saying, I do not know what you are talking about! As he went out to the gate, another girl saw him and said to those who were there, This man was with Jesus the Nazorean. Again he denied it with an oath, I do not know the man! A little later the bystanders came over and said to Peter, Surely you too are one of them; even your speech gives you away. At that he began to curse and to swear, I do not know the man. And immediately a cock crowed. Then Peter remembered the word that Jesus had spoken: Before the cock crows you will deny me three times. He went out and began to weep bitterly.

Trial IV: Jesus before Pontius Pilate TRIAL IV: JESUS BEFORE PILATE (Matthew 27:1-2, Mark 15:1-5, Luke 23:1-5, John 18:28-40) Then the whole assembly of them arose and brought him before Pilate. They brought charges against him, saying, We found this man misleading our people; he opposes the payment of taxes to Caesar and maintains that he is the Messiah, a king. Pilate asked him, Are you the king of the Jews? He said to him in reply, You say so. Pilate then addressed the chief priests and the crowds, I find this man not guilty. But they were adamant and said, He is inciting the people with his teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee where he began even to here.

Trial V: Jesus before King Herod TRIAL V: JESUS BEFORE HEROD (Luke 23:6-12) On hearing this, Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean; and upon learning that he was under Herod s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod who was in Jerusalem at that time. Herod was very glad to see Jesus; he had been wanting to see him for a long time, for he had heard about him and had been hoping to see him perform some sign. He questioned him at length, but he (Jesus) gave him no answer. The chief priests and scribes, meanwhile, stood by accusing him harshly. [Even] Herod and his soldiers treated him contemptuously and mocked him, and after clothing him in resplendent garb, he sent him back to Pilate. Herod and Pilate became friends that very day, even though they had been enemies formerly.

The Death of Judas THE DEATH OF JUDAS (Matthew 27:3-10) Then Judas, his betrayer, seeing that Jesus had been condemned, deeply regretted what he had done. He returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, I have sinned in betraying innocent blood. They said, What is that to us? Look to it yourself. Flinging the money into the temple, he departed and went off and hanged himself. The chief priests gathered up the money, but said, It is not lawful to deposit this in the temple treasury, for it is the price of blood. After consultation, they used it to buy the potter s field as a burial place for foreigners. That is why that field even today is called the Field of Blood. Then was fulfilled what had been said through Jeremiah the prophet, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the value of a man with a price on his head, a price set by some of the Israelites, and they paid it out for the potter s field just as the Lord had commanded me (see also Acts 1:18-20).

TRIAL VI: JESUS QUESTIONED BY PILATE Matthew 27:11-14; John 19:1-15 Now Jesus stood before the governor, and he questioned him, Are you the king of the Jews? Jesus said, You say so. And when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he made no answer. Then Pilate said to him, Do you not hear how many things they are testifying against you? But he did not answer him one word, so that the governor was greatly amazed.

Divine Communication Goes Unheeded DREAM OF PILATE S WIFE GOES UNHEEDED (Matthew 27:19) While he (Pontius Pilate) was still seated on the bench, his wife sent him a message, Have nothing to do with that righteous man. I suffered much in a dream today because of him. Prior to Jesus being sentenced to death, Pontius Pilate s wife disclosed to her husband what is recorded in the Scripture above. As we know, her counsel was rejected and the rest is history.

BEHOLD THE MAN JESUS IS SENTENCED TO DEATH (Matthew 27:15-26; Mark 15:6-15; Luke 23:18-25; John 19:16) Now on the occasion of the feast the governor was accustomed to release to the crowd one prisoner whom they wished. And at that time they had a notorious prisoner called [Jesus] Barabbas. So when they had assembled, Pilate said to them, Which one do you want me to release to you, [Jesus] Barabbas, or Jesus called Messiah? For he knew that it was out of envy that they had handed him over. While he was still seated on the bench, his wife sent him a message, Have nothing to do with that righteous man. I suffered much in a dream today because of him. The chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas but to destroy Jesus. The governor said to them in reply, Which of the two do you want me to release to you? They answered, Barabbas! Pilate said to them, Then what shall I do with Jesus called Messiah? They all said, Let him be crucified! But he said, Why? What evil has he done? They only shouted the louder, Let him be crucified! When Pilate saw that he was not succeeding at all, but that a riot was breaking out instead, he took water and washed his hands in the sight of the crowd, saying, I am innocent of this man s blood. Look to it yourselves. And the whole people said in reply, His blood be upon us and upon our children. Then he released Barabbas to them, but after he had Jesus scourged, he handed him over to be crucified.

Jesus Is Mocked JESUS IS MOCKED (Matthew 27:27-31; Mark 15:16-20; Luke 23:13-17; John 19:2-3) Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus inside the praetorium and gathered the whole cohort around him. They stripped off his clothes and threw a scarlet military cloak about him. Weaving a crown out of thorns, they placed it on his head, and a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! They spat upon him and took the reed and kept striking him on the head. And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the cloak, dressed him in his own clothes, and led him off to crucify him.

Way of the Cross THE WAY OF THE CROSS (Matthew 27:32; Mark 15:21; Luke 23:26-32, John 19:17) As they were going out, they met a Cyrenian named Simon; this man they pressed into service to carry his cross. THE 14 STATIONS OF THE CROSS For Roman Catholics throughout the world, the Stations of the Cross are synonymous with Lent, Holy Week and, especially, Good Friday. This devotion is also known as the "Way of the Cross," the "Via Crucis" and the "Via Dolorosa." It commemorates 14 key events on the day of Christ's crucifixion. The majority concern His final walk through the streets of Jerusalem, carrying His Cross. Paintings and prayers commemorating the 14 Stations of the Cross are on the following pages.

Station I- Jesus Is Convicted Jesus stands in the most human of places. He has already experienced profound solidarity with so many on this earth, by being beaten and tortured. Now he is wrongfully condemned to punishment by death. His commitment to entering our lives completely begins its final steps. He has said "yes" to God and placed his life in God's hands. We follow him in this final surrender, and contemplate with reverence each place along the way, as he is broken and given for us. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. As I view the scene, I become moved by both outrage and gratitude. I look at Jesus. His face. The crown of thorns. The blood. His clothes stuck to the wounds on his back. Pilate washes his hands of the whole affair. Jesus' hands are tied behind his back. This is for me. That I might be free. That I might have eternal life. As the journey begins I ask to be with Jesus. To follow his journey. I express my love and thanks.

Station II- Jesus Takes His Cross Jesus is made to carry the cross on which he will die. It represents the weight of all our crosses. What he must have felt as he first took it upon his shoulders! With each step he enters more deeply into our human experience. He walks in the path of human misery and suffering, and experiences its crushing weight. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. I contemplate the wood of that cross. I imagine how heavy it is. I reflect upon all it means that Jesus is carrying it. I look into his eyes. It's all there. This is for me. So I place myself with him in this journey. In its anguish. In his freedom and surrender. In the love that must fill his heart. With sorrow and gratitude, I continue the journey. Moved by the power of his love, I am drawn to him and express my love in the words that come to me.

Station III- Jesus Falls the First Time The weight is unbearable. Jesus falls under it. How could he enter our lives completely without surrendering to the crushing weight of the life of so many on this earth! He lies on the ground and knows the experience of weakness beneath unfair burdens. He feels the powerlessness of wondering if he will ever be able to continue. He is pulled up and made to continue. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. I stare at the weakness in his eyes. I can look at his whole body and see the exhaustion. As I behold him there on the ground, being roughly pulled up, I know forever how profoundly he understands my fatigue and my defeats. This is for me. In grief and gratitude I want to let him remain there. As I watch him stand again and gain an inner strength, I accept his love and express my thanks.

Station IV- Jesus Meets His Mother Jesus' path takes him to a powerful source of his strength to continue. All his life, his mother had taught him the meaning of the words, "Behold, the handmaid of the Lord." Now they look into each other's eyes. How pierced-through her heart must be! How pained he must be to see her tears! Now, her grace-filled smile blesses his mission and stirs his heart to its depth. Love and trust in God bind them together. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. As I watch them in this place along the way, I contemplate the mystery of love's power to give strength. She knows the sorrow in every mother's heart, who has lost a child to tragedy or violence. I look at the two of them very carefully, and long for such love and such peace. This is for me. Such incredible freedom. The availability of a servant. I find the words to express what is in my heart.

Station V- Simon Helps Jesus Carry His Cross Jesus even experiences our struggle to receive help. He is made to experience the poverty of not being able to carry his burden alone. He enters into the experience of all who must depend upon others to survive. He is deprived of the satisfaction of carrying this burden on his own. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. I look into his face and contemplate his struggle. His weariness and fragility. His impotence. I see how he looks at Simon, with utmost humility and gratitude. This is for me. So I feel anguish and gratitude. I express my thanks that he can continue this journey. That he has help. That he knows my inability to carry my burden alone. I say what is in my heart, with deep feeling.

Station VI- Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus Jesus' journey is at times brutal. He has entered into the terrible experiences of rejection and injustice. He has been whipped and beaten. His face shows the signs of his solidarity with all who have ever suffered injustice and vile, abusive treatment. He encounters a compassionate, loving disciple who wipes the vulgar spit and mocking blood from his face. On her veil, she discovers the image of his face - his gift to her. And, for us to contemplate forever. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. What does the face of Jesus hold for me? What do I see, as I look deeply into his face? Can I try to comfort the agony and pain? Can I embrace him, with his face so covered with his passion? The veil I behold is a true icon of his gift of himself. This is for me. In wonder and awe, I behold his face now wiped clean, and see the depth of his suffering in solidarity with all flesh. I say what I can say, to express my gratitude.

Station VII- Jesus Falls the Second Time Even with help, Jesus stumbles and falls to the ground. In deep exhaustion he stares at the earth beneath him. "Remember, you are dust and to dust you will return." He has seen death before. Now he can feel the profound weakness of disability and disease and aging itself, there on his knees, under the weight of his cross. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. I contemplate Jesus brought very low. As I behold him there on the ground, with all the agony taking its toll on him, I let my heart go out to him. I store up this image in my heart, knowing that I will never feel alone in my suffering or in any diminishment, with this image of Jesus on the ground before me. This is for me, so I express the feelings in my heart.

Station VIII- Jesus Meets the Women of Jerusalem The women of Jerusalem, and their children, come out to comfort and thank him. They had seen his compassion and welcomed his words of healing and freedom. He had broken all kinds of social and religious conventions to connect with them. Now they are here to support him. He feels their grief. He suffers, knowing he can't remain to help them more in this life. He knows the mystery of facing the separation of death. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. I look at their faces. So full of love and gratitude, loss and fear. I contemplate what words might have passed between them. I remember all his tender, compassionate, merciful love for me. I place myself with these women and children to support him. This is for me. So, I let this scene stir up deep gratitude.

Station IX- Jesus Falls the Third Time This last fall is devastating. Jesus can barely proceed to the end. Summoning all this remaining strength, supported by his inner trust in God, Jesus collapses under the weight of the cross. His executioners look at him as a broken man, pathetic yet paying a price he deserves. They help him up so he can make it up the hill of crucifixion. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. I pause to contemplate him there on the ground. The brokenness that makes me whole. The surrender that gives me life. I pause to experience and receive how completely he loves me. He is indeed completely poured out for me. As I treasure this gifted experience, I express what is in my heart.

Station X- Jesus Is Stripped of His Garments Part of the indignity is to be crucified naked. Jesus is completely stripped of any pride The wounds on his back are torn open again. He experiences the ultimate vulnerability of the defenseless. No shield or security protects him. As they stare at him, his eyes turn to heaven. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. I pause to watch the stripping. I contemplate all that is taken from him. And, how he faces his death with such nakedness. I reflect upon how much of himself he has revealed to me. Holding nothing back. As I look at him in his humility, I know that this is for me, and I share my feelings of gratitude.

Station XI- Jesus is Nailed to His Cross CRUCIFIXION OF JESUS CHRIST (Matthew 27:33-44; Mark 15:22-32; Luke 23:33-43; John 19:18-22) Huge nails are hammered through his hands and feet to fix him on the cross. He is bleeding much more seriously now. As the cross is lifted up, the weight of his life hangs on those nails. Every time he struggles to pull himself up to breathe, his ability to cling to life slips away. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. I make myself watch the nails being driven through his flesh. And I watch his face. I contemplate the completeness of his entry into our lives. Can there be any pain or agony he would not understand? This is for me. Nailed to a cross to forever proclaim liberty to captives. What sorrow and gratitude fill my heart!

Station XII- Jesus Dies on His Cross THE DEATH OF JESUS CHRIST (Matthew 27:45-56; Mark 15:33-41; Luke 23:44-49; John 19:25-30) Between two criminals, a mocking title above his head, with only Mary and John and Mary Magdalene to support him, Jesus surrenders his last breath: "Into your hands I commend my spirit." We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. I stand there, at the foot of the cross, side by side with all of humanity, and behold our salvation. I carefully watch and listen to all that is said. And then, I experience the one who gives life pass from life to death, for me. I console Mary and John and Mary. And let them console me. This is the hour to express the deepest feelings within me.

The Blood and the Water THE BLOOD AND THE WATER (John 19:31-37) Now since it was preparation day, in order that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath, for the sabbath day of that week was a solemn one, the Jews asked Pilate that their legs be broken and they be taken down. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and then of the other one who was crucified with Jesus. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs, but one soldier thrust his lance into his side, and immediately blood and water flowed out. An eyewitness has testified, and his testimony is true; he knows that he is speaking the truth, so that you also may [come to] believe. For this happened so that the scripture passage might be fulfilled: Not a bone of it will be broken. And again another passage says: They will look upon him whom they have pierced.

Station XIII- Jesus Is Removed from His Cross What tender mourning! Jesus' lifeless body lies in his mother's arms. He has truly died. A profound sacrifice, complete. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. I behold this scene at the foot of the cross. I contemplate touching, caressing his body. I remember all his hands have touched, all who have been blessed by his warm embrace. I pause to let it soak in. He knows the mystery of death. He has fallen into God's hands. For me. That I might love as I have been loved. I pour out my heart to the God of all mercies.

Station XIV- Jesus is Laid in the Tomb BURIAL OF JESUS CHRIST (Matthew 27:57-61; Mark 15: 42-47; Luke 23:50-56; John 19:38-42) They take the body of Jesus to its resting place. The huge stone over the tomb is the final sign of the permanence of death. In this final act of surrender, who would have imagined this tomb would soon be empty or that Jesus would show himself alive to his disciples, or that they would recognize him in the breaking of bread? Oh, that our hearts might burn within us, as we realize how he had to suffer and die so as to enter into his glory, for us. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. I pause to contemplate this act of closure on his life. In solidarity with all humanity, his body is taken to its grave. I stand for a moment outside this tomb. This final journey of his life has shown me the meaning of his gift of himself for me. This tomb represents every tomb I stand before with fear, in defeat, struggling to believe it could ever be empty. In the fullness of faith in the Risen One, given by his own Holy Spirit, I express my gratitude for this way of the cross. I ask Jesus, whose hands, feet and side still bear the signs of this journey, to grant me the graces I need to take up my cross to be a servant of his own mission.

Guard(s) at the Tomb GUARD AT THE TOMB (Matthew 27:62-66) The next day, the one following the day of preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate and said, Sir, we remember that this impostor while still alive said, After three days I will be raised up. Give orders, then, that the grave be secured until the third day, lest his disciples come and steal him and say to the people, He has been raised from the dead. This last imposture would be worse than the first. Pilate said to them, The guard is yours; go secure it as best you can. So they went and secured the tomb by fixing a seal to the stone and setting the guard.

The Empty Tomb THE EMPTY TOMB (Matthew 28:1-8; Luke 24:1-12; John 20:1-10) After the sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, approached, rolled back the stone, and sat upon it. His appearance was like lightning and his clothing was white as snow. The guards were shaken with fear of him and became like dead men. Then the angel said to the women in reply, Do not be afraid! I know that you are seeking Jesus the crucified. He is not here, for he has been raised just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples, He has been raised from the dead, and he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. Behold, I have told you. Then they went away quickly from the tomb, fearful yet overjoyed, and ran to announce this to his disciples.

Appearance to Women at/near the Tomb APPEARANCE TO WOMEN AT/NEAR THE TOMB (Matthew 28:9-10; Mark 16:1-8) And behold, Jesus met them on their way and greeted them. They approached, embraced his feet, and did him homage. Then Jesus said to them, Do not be afraid. Go tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.

Appearance to Mary Magdalen and other Mary APPEARANCE TO MARY MAGDALEN AND THE OTHER MARY (Mark 16:9-11, John 20:11-18) When he (Jesus) had risen, early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons. She went and told his companions who were mourning and weeping. When they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe.

Report of the Guard REPORT OF THE GUARD (Matthew 28:11-15) While they were going, some of the guard went into the city and told the chief priests all that had happened. They assembled with the elders and took counsel; then they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers, telling them, You are to say, His disciples came by night and stole him while we were asleep. And if this gets to the ears of the governor, we will satisfy [him] and keep you out of trouble. The soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has circulated among the Jews to the present [day].

Appearance on the Road to Emmaus

Appearance on the Road to Emmaus APPEARANCE ON THE ROAD TO EMMAUS (Mark 16:12-13, Luke 24:13-32) Now that very day two of them were going to a village seven miles from Jerusalem called Emmaus, and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred. And it happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus himself drew near and walked with them, but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him. He asked them, What are you discussing as you walk along? They stopped, looking downcast. One of them, named Cleopas, said to him in reply, Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know of the things that have taken place there in these days? And he replied to them, What sort of things? They said to him, The things that happened to Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, how our chief priests and rulers both handed him over to a sentence of death and crucified him. But we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel; and besides all this, it is now the third day since this took place. Some women from our group, however, have astounded us: they were at the tomb early in the morning and did not find his body; they came back and reported that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who announced that he was alive. Then some of those with us went to the tomb and found things just as the women had described, but him they did not see. And he said to them, Oh, how foolish you are! How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke! Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and enter into his glory? Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them what referred to him in all the scriptures. As they approached the village to which they were going, he gave the impression that he was going on farther. But they urged him, Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over. So he went in to stay with them. And it happened that, while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight. Then they said to each other, Were not our hearts burning [within us] while he spoke to us on the way and opened the scriptures to us?

Appearance to Simon Peter & Others APPEARANCE TO SIMON PETER AND OTHERS (Luke 24:33-35) So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem where they found gathered together the eleven and those with them who were saying, The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon! Then the two recounted what had taken place on the way (to Emmaus) and how he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

Appearance in the Upper Room APPEARANCE IN THE UPPER ROOM (Mark 16:14; Luke 24:36-47; John 20:19-20) While they were still speaking about this, he stood in their midst and said to them, Peace be with you. But they were startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a ghost. Then he said to them, Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have. And as he said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. While they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed, he asked them, Have you anything here to eat? They gave him a piece of baked fish; he took it and ate it in front of them. He said to them, These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled. Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures. And he said to them, Thus it is written that the Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

ESSENTIAL MISSION OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH THE GREAT COMMISSION (Matthew 28:16-20; Mark 13:10, 16:15-18; Luke 24:47-49; John 20:21-23) The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them. When they saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted. Then Jesus approached and said to them, All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.

Thomas Doubts THOMAS DOUBTS (John 20:24-29) Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples said to him, We have seen the Lord. But he said to them, Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe. Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, Peace be with you. Then he said to Thomas, Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe. Thomas answered and said to him, My Lord and my God! Jesus said to him, Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.

Appearance to the Seven Disciples

Appearance to the Seven Disciples APPEARANCE TO THE SEVEN DISCIPLES (John 21:1-14) After this, Jesus revealed himself again to his disciples at the Sea of Tiberias. He revealed himself in this way. Together were Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, Zebedee s sons, and two others of his disciples. Simon Peter said to them, I am going fishing. They said to him, We also will come with you. So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. When it was already dawn, Jesus was standing on the shore; but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, Children, have you caught anything to eat? They answered him, No. So he said to them, Cast the net over the right side of the boat and you will find something. So they cast it, and were not able to pull it in because of the number of fish. So the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, It is the Lord. When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tucked in his garment, for he was lightly clad, and jumped into the sea. The other disciples came in the boat, for they were not far from shore, only about a hundred yards, dragging the net with the fish. When they climbed out on shore, they saw a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread. Jesus said to them, Bring some of the fish you just caught. So Simon Peter went over and dragged the net ashore full of one hundred fifty-three large fish. Even though there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, Come, have breakfast. And none of the disciples dared to ask him, Who are you? because they realized it was the Lord. Jesus came over and took the bread and gave it to them, and in like manner the fish. This was now the third time Jesus was revealed to his disciples after being raised from the dead.

FEED MY SHEEP JESUS AND PETER (John 21:15-19) When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these? He said to him, Yes, Lord, you know that I love you. He said to him, Feed my lambs. He then said to him a second time, Simon, son of John, do you love me? He said to him, Yes, Lord, you know that I love you. He said to him, Tend my sheep. He said to him the third time, Simon, son of John, do you love me? Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, Do you love me? and he said to him, Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you. [Jesus] said to him, Feed my sheep. Amen, amen, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go. He said this signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. And when he had said this, he said to him, Follow me.

The Beloved Disciple THE BELOVED DISCIPLE (John 21:20-23) Peter turned and saw the disciple following whom Jesus loved, the one who had also reclined upon his chest during the supper and had said, Master, who is the one who will betray you? When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, Lord, what about him? Jesus said to him, What if I want him to remain until I come? What concern is it of yours? You follow me. So the word spread among the brothers that that disciple would not die. But Jesus had not told him that he would not die, just What if I want him to remain until I come? [What concern is it of yours?]

Jesus Returns to the Father ASCENSION OF THE LORD (Mark 16:19-20; Luke 24:50-53) So then the Lord Jesus, after he spoke to them, was taken up into heaven and took his seat at the right hand of God. But they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through accompanying signs.

We are ALL His Children You.Me..All of us.because He loves us. We say we aren t worthy to receive His forgiveness and He agrees. But He says we re forgiven anyhow and His Grace is sufficient for us. Because He loves us THAT MUCH.Let us go forward and spread His love to all Nations..
