IOG headquarters in Chicago purchased a portable, 435 gallon baptismal pool that could be set up an broken down easily. the Israel of God 4957 Redan Rd Stone Mountain, Ga BAPTISMAL POOL Preaching the Gospel Through Baptism January 2010 Since its purchase, Bro Mahaleel, along with other elders have baptised over 20 people. All candidates for baptism have a private meeting with Bro. Deuel, and Bro. Habbakkuk to ensure that they understand, through the scriptures, what they are embarking on and the commitment desired from the Lord. The pool has been a most welcomed addition to the church and we are blessed to be able to continue the gospel through the baptism. Upcoming Events, The Creator and His Creations, By Bro. Nehemiah 7 IOG Scroll Newsletter Editor Sister Kizzy E ARTHQUAKE IN HAITI The 2010 Haiti Earthquake was a catastrophic magnitude 7.0 M earthquake centered approximately 25 kilometers (16 mi) from Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, on Tuesday, January 12, The earthquake occurred at a depth of 13 kilometers (8.1 mi). The United States Geological Survey recorded a series of fourteen aftershocks between magnitudes 5.0 and 5.9. The International Red Cross estimates that about three million people were affected by the quake, and about 45,000 50,000 people were killed. The earthquake caused major damage to Port-au-Prince. Most major landmarks were significantly damaged or destroyed, including the Presidential Palace (the President survived), the National Assembly building, the Port-au-Prince Cathedral, and the main jail. All hospitals were destroyed or were so badly damaged that they had to be abandoned. The United Nations reported that headquarters of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), located in the capital, collapsed and that many UN personnel were unaccounted for. 2 Page 2 IOG Scroll H EALTH MINUTE Flu Season Is Far From Over; How to Soothe Symptoms Most people have heard of influenza or the flu, but this term is often applied to symptoms of the common cold or stomach viruses such as vomiting or diarrhea. Influenza is neither. It is a serious respiratory illness that is very contagious. The typical patient has nasal symptoms, fever, severe cough and body aches. A virus that is spread easily when an infected individual coughs or sneezes, influenza can be spread before symptoms appear, and for many days after symptoms begin, and can lead to lifethreatening complications. About 226,000 people in the United States, including previously healthy children, are admitted to the hospital with complications from influenza each year. What can you do? Here are some safe home remedies to soothe your child s flu symptoms: -- Honey (12 months and up): Honey coats and soothes the throat and helps tame a cough. Your child must be at least a year old to try this remedy. If your child is between 1 and 5 years old, give them 1/2 teaspoon of honey. If they are between 6 and 11 years old, give them 1 teaspoon. Caution: Do not give honey to a child before his first birthday. It can cause a rare and sometimes fatal illness called infant botulism. -- A neti pot (4 years and up): A neti pot flushes a mild salt solution through the nasal passages, moisturizing the area and thinning, loosening, and rinsing away mucus. Think of it as a nasal wash. Caution: Do not force a child who is not interested. This needs to be a very gentle procedure, to prevent both upsetting them and damaging their nasal passages. -- Nose blowing (2 years and up): Clearing the nose of mucus helps your child breathe and sleep more easily and generally makes them feel more comfortable. If your child s nose is sore from all the sniffling and blowing, rub a little petroleum jelly or other child-safe ointment around their nostrils. -- Bulb syringe (best for babies): This clears the nose of kids who are too young to blow their nose. Clearing a stuffy nose with a bulb syringe works best for young babies, but if your older child does not mind the procedure, there is no reason not to do it. Caution: Do not use nasal decongestant sprays on a baby unless a doctor tells you to. They may work for a bit, but they can make congestion worse in the long run. -- Vapor rubs (3 months and up): Vapor rubs may help kids sleep better at night. Natural vapor balms are available if you would prefer not to use products that contain petroleum or paraben. These are typically made with aloe, herbs, oils, beeswax and essential oils. Search online for baby rub, baby vapor rub, or similar words. Caution: Do not put vapor rub on broken or sensitive skin, or to your child s mouth or nose, around her eyes, or anywhere on their face, for that matter. -- Gargling with salt water (4 years and up): Gargling with salt water is a time-honored way to soothe a sore throat. When your child s resting, they are also healing. Studies show that stress plays a role in illness, too. If your child is under pressure, giving them a break may be just what they need to fight off their symptoms. -- Steamy air (all ages): Breathing moist air helps loosen mucus in the nasal passages. A warm bath has the added benefit of relaxing your child. You can use a humidifier, cool-mist vaporizer or steamy bathroom. Be sure to clean humidifiers often. They accumulate mold, which they then spray into the air if they are not kept clean. -- Extra fluids (6 months and up): Drinking plenty of fluids helps prevent dehydration, and flushes and thins nasal secretions. Caution: Stick to breast milk or formula for babies younger than 6 months old unless your doctor tells you otherwise. Babies that young may not need water, and too much could even be harmful. -- Chicken soup and other warm liquids (6 months and up): Warm liquids can be very soothing and help relieve congestion. ~Article courtesy of Crossroads News.com T HE PODIUM Very powerful statement. Have our minds really been renewed through His Spirit? Is our faith being proved through our works for Him? With the deterioration of the economy, we cannot depend on man to save us. What will count is what we have done for the Lord: For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men 2 Corinthians 5: It is the Word of God that cleanses us, sanctifies us, and encourages us in times of trials and tribulation. It is critical to continue to pray, study God s Word, and be good ambassadors for Christ. There are many who are looking for His truth and, as we see in the Word, we are to be ambassadors to the nations for Him (see Deut. 4: 5-6). I encourage to continue to walk in the vocation in which you were called and continue to increase your faith (Romans 10:17). As we move forward as a congregation, let us all remember show love for each other and that it is NOT ABOUT US, BUT IT S ABOUT JESUS! Peace in Jesus name, Bro. We look forward to more feasts like this in the future. B OWLING FUNDRAISER The bowling nightfundraiser turned out to be a great evening for all that came out. Although everyone did not bowl, everyone had a great time. All the money raised will go toward the building of the new kitchen. C LOTHING AND FOOD C OMMUNITY GIVEAWAY As a way to reach out to the community, the church held a clothing giveaway. Many families from nearby neighborhoods came out to find out more about the church. The word was spread, food was given out, and clothing reached those who were in need.
