2 Three Levels of Old Testament Stories 1 Top Level: The universal plan of God, the big story of creation, fall, redemption and restoration. Middle Level: God s working through a particular people, Israel, in keeping faithful love to them and through them bringing his Savior into the world. Bottom Level: The hundreds of individual stories can make up the top two levels Note carefully: Every individual (bottom level) story is a part of the greater story of God s working through Israel (middle level), which is itself a part of the grand narrative of redemption (top level). Tips for Reading Old Testament Stories God is the main character. This means that for every story you read, ask yourself, What does this story tell me about God, his purposes, and his ways? The Old Testament stories parallel our lives. We can identify with the struggles and failures, the emotions and tension. As we see these characters fail, we can also understand how, in Christ, we can avoid such failure (Gal 3:29; 1 Cor. 10:1-6). Notice the details; they are there for a reason. Example: Gen. 37:15 All of the stories of the Old Testament reinforce the covenant relationship between God and his people. Example: Judges 1:4-7, Deut. 7:2 1 Taken from Pastor Jason s notes on How to Understand the Bible RCCC C Snyder

3 Pentateuch Why create anything...or anyone? IN THE BEGINNING......it was good. We were created in His image to BEAR His image and live in right relationship with Him whereby He is glorified through our existence. We exist to glorify Him. How? Bear His image rightly. This in turn will show the nations who God is and what He is like. "For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover the sea." - Habakkuk 2:14 ESV So God creates earth and planets and man. "God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. God blessed them; and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth."" Genesis 1:27-28 NASB If we multiply and fill the earth, His image will be everywhere! Get it? All of creation will glorify the creator. To not multiply and not fill the earth concentrates His image. Restricts His image. Confines His image. THE GOAL OF THE WHOLE BIBLE IS THAT HUMANS EVERYWHERE SHOULD GLORIFY GOD WHOSE GLORY HAS CONFRONTED THEM. LOST IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN, THIS GOAL APPEARS THROUGH MOSES, ON ITS WAY TO FINAL FULFILLMENT THROUGH CHRIST. ESV Study bible. RCCC C Snyder

4 Genesis 1-11: Place: Garden and then wilderness. RCCC C Snyder

5 Significant Verses: "28 God blessed them; and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth."" Genesis 1:28 NASB "1 And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth." - Genesis 9:1 NASB RCCC C Snyder

6 First glimpse of Christ: Ø Genesis 3:15 The LORD God said to the serpent, Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. 15 I (God) will put enmity between you (satan) and the woman (Eve), and between your offspring and her offspring; he (Jesus) shall bruise your (satan s) head, and you (satan) shall bruise his (Jesus ) heel. This verse is called the protoevangelium first pronouncement of the gospel. Key People: Adam/Eve Cain/Abel Noah Key Events: Creation Fall Flood judgment and grace in one event. Babel forced dispersion of God s people by God. Why? Tower contradicts be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth command. Key Theme: Origins, sin, judgment. RCCC C Snyder

7 Genealogies of Genesis: RCCC C Snyder

8 Genesis 12-50: Place: Caanan wilderness out of His presence Key People: Abraham elected by God even though he was a pagan. v Abraham is promised four things Land Descendants Blessings for himself Blessing for all the nations of the world through Abraham Isaac the promise of God for Abraham. Jacob the continuing line of lineage promised by God. Joseph the person who was used by God to preserve the Israelites in Egypt. Key Themes: Covenant and Election RCCC C Snyder

9 Exodus: Place: Egypt. After Caanan but before Sinai. Important Concept: Miraculous deliverance of Yahweh s people from bondage in Egypt. Covenant relationship expanded to Israel as His people at Sinai. Decalogue given. Tabernacle established. Exodus 1-12:30 Israel in Egypt. Exodus 12:31-18:27 Israelite exodus from Egypt. Exodus 19:1-40:38 Israel at Sinai. Key People: Moses Key Themes: Yahweh, plagues, Passover, Decalogue RCCC C Snyder

10 At Sinai The tabernacle or tent of meeting is erected. It symbolized the active presence of the Lord among the people. It restored intimate fellowship enjoyed by God and man in the garden before the fall. The God of all creation was going to dwell with man. This is profound. The Decalogue is given. This would tell the people how to be His people. How to be neighbors to each other. These laws would foster a behavior that would make them different from all other nations. This behavior would image God in His holiness. Nine of the 10 commandments of Exodus 20 are reiterated in the New Testament which means they are still applicable to us today. Reminder: Law and the Nature of Covenants 2 God gave covenants to relate to humans and to see his glory manifested through them. In each covenant, it is possible to see how God wishes people to relate to him, and to each other: The Old Testament laws, as represented in Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy, were God s means of teaching his people, in their time and context, how to relate well to him and to each other. 2 Taken from Pastor Jason s notes on How to Understand the Bible RCCC C Snyder

11 Because we are the people of the New Covenant, then the law of the Old Testament is not God s law to us; however, it is God s word to us. 1. Do see the OT law as God s inspired word for you. Don t see it as God s direct command to you. 2. Do see the law as the basis for the Mosaic covenant and Israel s history. Don t see it as binding on believers except where the New Testament explicitly renews it. 3. Do see God s standards of holiness, righteousness and love revealed in the law. Don t forget that Christ satisfied all those standards on your behalf. 4. Don t read the OT law as technically comprehensive. Do see it as paradigmatic, or examples of a full range of expected behavior. 5. Don t expect the particular OT laws cited often by the prophets or NT writers. Do remember that the essence of the law is repeated throughout the prophets and NT. 6. Do see the law as a generous gift to Israel, bringing blessings when obeyed. Don t see the OT law as a grouping of arbitrary rules designed to limit people s freedom. v FYI - A type is an OT person, event or thing that foreshadowed the corresponding NT entity. So Passover is a type of Christ. Cool huh? J RCCC C Snyder

12 Leviticus: Place: Sinai. After exodus but before wanderings in wilderness. RCCC C Snyder

13 Key Themes Holiness, sacrifice. Important Concept: Expansion of the covenant law for the purpose of holiness among His people. It is basically a manual or handbook on holiness for daily living. Ø FYI more than 600 laws are contained in the books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. Why? Regulate the moral, religious and civil life of Israel in keeping with God s holiness...and to maintain covenant relationship with Yahweh. Ø The other purpose of the law was to point to sin. The law exposed the human need for divine redemption. It was intended to prepare Israel for the revelation of Jesus Christ. So...all those sacrifices the Israelites did were a type of Christ. The sacrifices were substitutes. To make atonement for sin is to have the penalty paid and the guilt removed. They were only types and shadows and therefore were repeated regularly and often, until the great high priest should come and offer a final sacrifice to effect atonement for his people. Cool huh? J RCCC C Snyder

14 Numbers: Place: Sinai. RCCC C Snyder

15 Key Themes: Testing by Yahweh, census. Important Concept: Testing, purging, purifying of Yahweh s people while they wander around as punishment for their lack of faith. 38 years wandering the desert. Murmuring and rebellions of the people of God against His grace are unfortunately a central theme. Those whom God had redeemed from slavery in Egypt and to whom He displayed His grace at Mount Sinai responded with indifference, ingratitude, and repeated acts of rebellion. The result? Wrath of God - Punishment by wanderings and forfeiture of the promised land. Mercy of God the next generation will inherit the promised land. FYI...Two census were taken to count up recruitment power for war, allotment of work assignments and establishing a taxation system. There were about 600,000 able bodied men for warfare which puts the population at 2 million or more. RCCC C Snyder

16 Deuteronomy: Place: Across the Jordan in the wilderness. Key Themes: Law, central sanctuary, blessings or forfeiture of blessings by the people of God depending on if they kept the law with God. RCCC C Snyder

17 Important Concept: Covenant renewal and 2nd law giving as preparation for entering into the land of promise by the 2nd generation of Yahweh s people. 4 Speeches by Moses. Pleads with people to obey. Key People: Moses dies. Joshua takes the lead. As they prepare to enter the land the reader can see covenant realization from back in Genesis 12 with Abraham.

18 Garden Place of fellowship with the Lord Place of revolt by man. Sinai Decalogue - How to worship Tabernacle where to worship Caanan Abrahamic Promise Land of God's People Wilderness Punishment: wanderings Grace - God waits patiently for next generation. Egypt Caanan Enter in freedom Exit out of slavery Promise kept Obedience required God provides a way (at first in the OT) for them to be reunited with Him via laws, sacrifices and a tabernacle. All of this is in play until the time when he (Jesus) shall bruise your (satan s) head, and you (satan) shall bruise his (Jesus ) heel. The NT ushers in the realization of that protoevangelium. RCCC C Snyder

19 Things to think about as you read the OT Where were the most important events in biblical chronology, the ones that drove the story forward? What did those stories mean? How did they drive the story forward? RCCC C Snyder
