NATHAN BRILLIANT, EditoT Ente.ed Cis second-cia.. matter Ap.il 9th, 1926 at the Post Office, Cleveland, Ohio, unde. the Act of MaTCh 3.d From Jewish Literature Benevolence Rejoice not at the awful and terrible day which befalls a man, lest it may light on thee in the heydey (of life). Seek not and welcome not the day of his calamity. Canst thou know what may happen to thee on the morrow? If a man hire himself unto thee and serve thee, regard him as though he were thy child; should he be slow in his services, deal gently with him. Do not fail to pay every man the wages for which he has laboured. Do kindness; be it thy part to rescue, redeem and deliver, knowing that all our days are as a shadow. Draw out from their prison-house those that dwell in darkness, and lay not out thy money to usury. Before thou dost attend to thine own wants and duties, ascertain the nature of thy beast, and supply its needs. Be scrupulous in attending to what is necessary for the decent burial of an unknown; accompany the remains to the grave, and the mourners to their home. Eat not to the full in thy own house, and forget the one who seeks alms at thy door. Look upon humanity as one whole, and have its welfare constantly in mind. Withhold not kindness from thy neighbour until the morrow, lest thine iniquity bring its punishment. Be near at hand with food and raiment, and lend unto the poor; covet not thy neighbour. It is a precious thing and fine, indeed, to be liberal of heart, remembering, too, that humility is the twin-sister of liberality. 3 EUCLID AVENUE TEMPLE BULLETIN Home Service for Hanukkah THE. FATHER:-Let us give thanks to Almighty God for His deliverance of our people In the days of old. We remember tonight the lights that heroes kindled in the Temple of Zion, after the enemy had profaned the Sanctuary and enslaved the nation. Then the great God of justice fought on our side and through the valor of the Maccabees Israel was freed from the Syrian tyrant, and the lights of joyful worship again were kindled upon Israel's altar. THE CHILDREN:-We therefore praise and worship the God of our fathers, whose will it is that men should be free. He has lifted the yoke from upon us whenever the burden was greater than we could bear. THE FATHER:-O God of freedom! 0 God of justice! We glorify Thy Holy name in this land of freedom and justice. We rejoice in this Feast of Hanukkah and in its great heroic memories. May they kindle a new zeal in our hearts and in the hearts of our children. THE CHILDREN:-And fill us with pride in our glorious past, and with courage to face every trial. THE FATHER:-Let us proclaim the unity of the Lord of Hosts, our Redeemer, the Guardian of all mankind. ALL TOGETHER:-Sh'mah Yisroel, Adonoi Elohenu, Adonoi Echod Hear, 0 Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One. Boruch Shem K'vod Malchuso l'olom voed Blessed be His glorious Name forever and ever. (One of the household now kindles the lights-one on the first evening, two on the second, etc., until on the last night of Hanukkah eight candles are lit.) The Blessing of the Lights WE PRAISE Thee, 0 Lord our God, Ruler of the Universe, whose moral law has sanctified us. Mindful of the heroism of our fathers, we now kindle the lights of Hanukkah. WE PRAISE Thee, 0 Lord our God, Ruler of the Universe, in whose Name our fathers wrought heroic deeds in this season in days of old. (And on the first night only, add:) WE PRAISE Thee, 0 Lord our God, Ruler of the Universe, who has granted us life, sustained us, and enabled us joyfully to celebrate this festive holiday. THE FATHER:-We thank God for the Maccabean heroes who cleansed our altars and saved our faith. THE CHILDREN:-For the victory of their righteous cause we praise the Lord. THE FATHER:-We thank Thee for Mattathias, the aged warrior and his heroic sons who perished rather than surrender their convictions. THE CHILDREN:-We thank Thee for Judah, the Maccabee, who with but a few withstood the hosts of tyranny. THE FATHER:-For the purifying of the Temple we thank Thee; and for the lights that were kindled there by brave men to whom an ideal meant more than comfort and security. ALL TOGETHER:-O God, strengthen Thou our hearts to hold fast to our holy Faith, and to serve Thee forever. Give us, too, the courage to stand for right, for justice and for truth. Conclude the service with the singing of "Rock of Ages," Union Hymnal, 189. (From the Free Synagogue Bulletin)

4 EUCLID AV'NUE TEMPLE BULLETIN In the Home Chanukah is a holiday rich in ceremonies, which can be practised in the home. It is needless to point out that Judaism can best be taught through doing, through active participation in ceremonial life. Here is what you can do at home: CHANUKAH CELEBRATIONS 1. If you have no Chanukah Menorah, get one at the temple office (15c each). Every child in the school has received a box of candles. Kindle the Chanukah candles every evening. The first Chanukah light is lit Friday evening, December 4th. Add one candle each night through Friday evening, December 11th, when all eight candles are lit. (See Union Prayer Boook, page 351.) 2. Sing the Chanukah songs which your- child has learned in the Religious School. 3. Arrange for Chanukah parties. A pamphlet entitled "Chanukah Parties" prepared by Mrs. Braverman and Mr. Brilliant is available at the Temple Office for 25 cents each. It contains a wealth of material on the organization of the p~rty, many new Chanukah games and suggestions. There are also a number of recipes for Chanukah cookies and other dainties as well as poems and music. 4. The story of Chanukah may be read in "The Story of the Jewish People," by Jack Myers, chapters 1, 2 and 3; in "Books of the Maccabees," especially chapter 4 in Book 1 and chapter 1 in Book 2; in Graetz's "History of the Jews," Volume I, chapters 21, 22 and 23. All of these books may be obtained in our Temple Library. For further suggestions see our Librarian. In the Temple December 5th, 11 A. In the Classrooms children are not only being given the Chanukah story and Chanukah customs but are engaged in making original little gifts for their parents or friends. Faunce "Facing Life," pp The lasting foundations of friendship are to be found in united effort for a common cause. Men that cooperate in an enterprise that is worth while come to understand and to prize one another. If you simply joillj another man in bearing a canoe over a "carry" between two lakes, you may make that man your friend--or your enemy-for the rest of the summer. In any case, you will discover his quality. We cannot walk up to a stranger and propose a friendship. But we can propose giving a lift to some undertaking that needs help, and through cooperative effort we see into the souls of our fellowmen. Those who are rowing in the same boat, playing on the same team, singing in the same club, fighting in the same battle are constantly making discoveries in friendship. Such men do not whine about their own isolation and solitude; they do not mope and wonder why they are not popular. They take hold of things that need to be done and join hands with the nearest group. And they soon discover that their own life has become enriched by new associations and cross-fertilized by scores of unsought contacts. They have arrived at the epoch-making discovery that the finest friendship is quite involuntary; it is the by-product of cooperative endeavor.
