3 List of Tables Methodology The purpose of this study was to update the information from the 1998 MetroWest Jewish Population Study that could be updated without conducting new telephone interviews. A method using counts of Distinctive Jewish Names (DJNs) from a computerized directory was used to estimate the current number of Jewish households and their geographic distribution. 1 Institutional Surveys were administered to the JCCs, the Federation, the Jewish day schools, and synagogues to collect membership, enrollment, and Federation campaign information. While the DJN method of estimating Jewish population is not as reliable as the random digit dialing (RDD) methodology employed in 1998, the results should be indicative of the overall trends in the community. Geographical Note: ln 2012, the Jewish Federation of MetroWest served Essex, Morris, Sussex and northern Union Counties. Until 2012, the Jewish Federation of Central New Jersey served southern Union and northern Somerset Counties. In 2012, the two Federations merged to form the Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ. 1 For an explanation of DJN methodology, see Ira M. Sheskin. 4 Major Findings Population Size 1. While the overall population (Jews and non-jews) of Greater MetroWest increased by 2% from , the non-hispanic white population decreased by 9%. 2. The number of Jewish households in MetroWest decreased from 47,000 in 1998 to 44,500 in 2008 and 44,000 in Thus, MetroWest lost about 5% of its Jewish households from , but remained stable from The number of Jews in MetroWest decreased from 96,000 in 1998 to 91,000 in 2008 and 90,000 in With the addition of Central NJ in 2012, the Jewish population of MetroWest increased by about 28% from In 2012, 140,000 persons live in 56,400 Jewish households in Greater MetroWest, of whom 115,000 persons are Jewish. 6. From , only northern Union County showed any significant change in the number of Jewish households (a decrease of more than 800 households). Overall, the geographic distribution of Jewish households in Greater MetroWest did not change significantly. 7. The following seven zip code areas contain 34% of Jewish households: Livingston (9%), West Orange (8%), Westfield (4%), Short Hills (4%), Morristown (3%), Springfield (3%), and Maplewood (3%). 8. More than 500,000 Jews live in New Jersey, which has the fourth highest Jewish population of the 50 states. 9. In 2012, 5.8% of persons in New Jersey are Jewish; 5.6% of persons in Greater MetroWest are Jewish. 10. The Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ is the largest Jewish Federation in New Jersey and the 12 th largest in the US. Synagogue Membership 11. Greater MetroWest has 80 synagogues, including 33 Orthodox, 23 Conservative, 3 Reconstructionist, 14 Reform, and 7 other. Of the 80 synagogues, 73 participated in the Synagogue Survey. -4-

5 12. The number of synagogue member households (about 18,800 in 2012) is down 3% since The decrease in Conservative and Reform synagogue member households is consistent with national trends. JCC Membership 14. From , the number of Jewish JCC member households at JCC MetroWest decreased by 39%, due to the closing of the Whippany location. 15. From , the number of Jewish JCC member households at the JCC of Central New Jersey increased by 24%. 16. In 2012, a total of 3,814 households are members of one of the three JCCs located in Greater MetroWest. 17. Four JCCs are located in northern Middlesex County (1), Union County (2), and Essex County (1). 18. In 2012, 7% of Jewish households in Greater MetroWest are members of a JCC located in Greater MetroWest. Jewish Preschool/Child Care % of Jewish preschool/child care enrollment is at synagogues; 20%, at JCCs; and 6%, at Jewish day schools. 20. About 2,900 children age 0-5 attend a Jewish preschool/child care program located in Greater MetroWest. Jewish Day 21. Jewish day school enrollment for all grades is down 17% from Jewish day school enrollment for grades K-8 is down 26% from Jewish day school enrollment for grades 9-12 is up 3% from Jewish day school enrollment for grades K-1 is down 30% from The largest decrease in Jewish day school enrollment is with the Conservative school, in keeping with national trends. 26. In total, about 2,200 Jewish children attend grades K-12 at the five Jewish day schools located in Greater MetroWest. -5-

6 Current Enrollment in Formal Jewish Education % of pre- students attend a synagogue school and 15% attend a Jewish day school % of post- students attend a synagogue school and 28% attend a Jewish day school. Informal Jewish Education % of Jewish day campers attended or worked at a JCC day camp this past summer; 24%, at an independent Jewish day camp; and 27%, at a synagogue day camp. 30. About 3,600 Jewish children age 3-17 attended or worked at a Jewish day camp located in Greater MetroWest this past summer. 31. Jewish overnight camp enrollment is up 21% at all tracked camps and is up 28% at the JCC camps % of Jewish teenage youth group participants participate at a synagogue and 27% participate in an independent youth group. 33. Almost 1,400 Jewish children age participate in a Jewish youth group. JFGMW Donations Note: Campaign information reflect data combined for the two Federations. 34. Adjusted for inflation, JFGMW has raised in excess of $500 million from From , adjusted for inflation, the JFGMW Annual Campaign is down $7.6 million (23%). 36. The number of donations to the JFGMW Annual Campaign was 16,746 in 2012, down 5,377 (24%) from 22,123 in Adjusted for inflation, the average donation per Jewish household to the JFGMW Annual Campaign in 2012 is down 24% since 2008, from $582 to $ Thus, from , adjusted for inflation, the Annual Campaign, the number of donations, and the average donation per Jewish household are down. However, the average size of a donation has remained relatively stable. 39. Adjusted for inflation, the Other Campaigns run by JFGMW have raised about $44 million from Foundation giving has been a major success in recent years. In 2012, alone the Foundation added $40 million in assets. -6-

7 Detailed Findings on Synagogue and JCC Membership and Enrollment in Jewish Education Note that too many synagogues were unable to provide estimates for 1998 membership. Thus, while we show those estimates that we did obtain, nothing was done with the 1998 data because it was too incomplete. -7-
