Part 3 - Revelation 21:9-17 The Word on Heaven >>> I pray that they would have the courage to take that step, as well, and proclaim Christ as their Savior. And I pray this in Jesus' name, amen. Several years ago a hit movie was out called "Field of Dreams" where an Iowa farmer by the name of Ray heard a voice that say, if you build it, they will come. So what did he do? What any of us would do in that situation. He built a baseball stadium. And out of corn fields came all these great players from the past long since dead who played baseball on his field and one day while he and his wife and daughter were out watching them play he noticed the catcher when he took off his mask and realized the catcher was his own father and that led to a discussion about heaven. Watch this video. [ Music ] >> My God. I only saw him years later when he was worn down by life. Look at him. He's got his whole life in front of him and I'm not even a glint in his eye. What do I say to him? >> Why don't you introduce him to his granddaughter? >> Hi. >> Hi. >> Just wanted to thank you folks for putting up this field, letting us play here. I'm John Kinsella. >> I'm Ray, my wife Annie. This is my daughter Karen. Karen, this is my -- this is John. >> Hi, John. >> Hiya, Karen. >> Well, we're going to let you two talk. I mean, if all these people are going to come, we have a lot of work to do. Very nice meeting you. >> Ma'am. >> Come on, hon. >> You catch a good game. >> Thank you. So beautiful here. For me -- well, for me, it's like a dream come true. Can I ask you something? Is -- is this heaven? >> It's Iowa.

>> Iowa? >> Yeah. >> Could have sworn it was heaven. >> Is -- is there a heaven? >> Oh yeah. It's the place dreams come true. >> Maybe this is heaven. >> Well, there are two things I can assure you. Number one, heaven is most definitely real. And number two, it's a lot nicer than Iowa. All right? But you know, so many times we get our view of heaven from things like movies and I want to remind you that we have called this series "The Word on Heaven" and word there refers to the Word of God because the only real true reliable source for what heaven will be like is found here in the Bible. And so, we're studying this passage in Revelation 21 and 22 which is all about the New Jerusalem, the capital city of heaven. Heaven is more than the New Jerusalem. It's a whole new heaven and a new earth but the capital city is what we're described in this passage. Now, we have already seen the coming of the New Jerusalem in week one and the characteristics of the New Jerusalem in week two. Today we're going the see some more specifics but I want to warn you in advance. It is going the blow your mind. It is going to boggle your mind. And here's why. Because John is trying to describe in human terms what he sees and what he sees is beyond the finite human mind's ability to really grasp. And so, this is going to literally blow you away. So we're going to begin this morning by reading the entire passage we want to study today which is verse 9 all the way through verse 17. Revelation 21. And in honor of the Word of God, I'm going to ask you to stand with me please as I read this entire passage. Revelation 21 begins in verse 9 and here's what the Word of God says. Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came and spoke with me saying, come here. I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb and he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God having the glory of God. Her brilliance was like a very costly stone as a stone of crystal clear Jasper. It had a great and a high wall with 12 gates and at the gates 12 angels. And names were written on them which are the names of the 12 tribes of the sons of Israel. Then there were three gates on the east and three gates on the north and three gates on the south and three gates on the west. And the wall of the city had 12 foundation stones and on them were the 12 names of the 12 apostles of the Lamb. Verse 15. The one who spoke with me had a gold measuring rod to measure the city and its gates and its wall. The city is laid out as a square. Its length is as great as the width an he measured the city with the rod. 1,500 miles. Its length was 1,500 miles. Its width was 1,500 miles. Its height 1,500 miles. And he measured its wall, 72 yards, according to human measurements and which are also angelic measurements. Thank you. You may be seated.

Now, let's begin to look at a description of this capital city of heaven, the New Jerusalem. And the first thing we see in the verses I read is the announcement of the city and here's what happens in verse 9 and verse 10. An angel is now going to give John a tour of the New Jerusalem. To put it in our lingo today, he's go now going to get the nickel tour of the heavenly city. Now, by the way, according to the text, this is not just any angel. It's the specific angel that carried with it and unleashed the final seven judgments of the tribulation period. And now this angel takes John away so he can see and get a glimpse of this holy city. Now, the same description in verse 9 is what we saw earlier in the text the last two weeks. We see the city described as the bride of the Lamb. And there are some who because of that title say that this isn't a literal city. It is just symbolic of the church of Jesus Christ because in the Bible the church is called the bride of Christ. However, to me, it seems very clear in the text it is a literal city because there are exact dimensions. There are walls. There are streets. There are gates. There's so much more. So I think it's a very literal city. And it says that it comes down from God. That's repeated from earlier, as well. Which reminds us that God is the architect of the city. So as we look at this city, you're going to go, that's impossible! Not when God is the architect of the city. Now, by the way, keep in mind that this is a city that those who have put their faith in God have longed for all the way since the Old Testament patriarch Abraham. In fact, look at Hebrews 11. We looked at this verse a couple weeks ago but let me remind you of it. In Hebrews it says, for he Abraham was looking for the city which has foundations whose architect and builder is God. So all the way back to Abraham believers in God have longed for this heavenly city that John now gets a glimpse of called the New Jerusalem. And beginning this verse 10 and in verse 11, we begin to see what the city will look like. Let me read verses 10 and 11 again. It says this. John says, and the angel carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and he showed me the holy city. From a distance he gets to see the city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, having the glory of God, her brilliance was like a very costly stone as a stone of crystal clear Jasper. Now, let's talk for a moment a little bit about the lighting of the city because John describes it as a crystal clear Jasper. Now, keep in mind that the titles we have for stones today are a little bit different in some cases than the titles they had back then and in that day jasper spoke of something more like a diamond. So when John gets this bird's eye view of the New Jerusalem, it looks like one gigantic crystal clear see-through diamond city. And what made it staggering was this. In the very middle of the city was the glory of God manifesting itself as a radiant, bright, incredible light. Now, let's talk for a moment about the glory of God. What is the glory of God? Well, let me give you a very simple definition. The glory of God is the sum total of all of His attributes, and in the Bible the glory of God when it's manifested is seen as an enormous light. Remember the Christmas story? The shepherds on the hillside and the angels appeared to them to announce the birth of Jesus and the Bible says the glory of the Lord shown round about them. So try to imagine in your mind this gigantic city, this city that looks like a crystal clear diamond and in the middle of the city is an amazing unbelievable

penetrating radiant light that is the glory of God that just shines dazzling through this amazing clear diamond city. That's the first thing that John sees. By the way, because of that, notice what doesn't need to be in heaven. In the same chapter, look down at verse 23. And verse 23 says, the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it. Why? For the glory of God has illumined it and its lamp is the Lamb. So in heaven there is no sun. There is no moon. We learn later there are no lamps because the very glory of God, the sum total of His attributes are manifested in the city and come forth as a radiant, bright light that makes this crystal clear diamond city spectacular to behold. That's the first thing that John sees. Now, notice what he sees next. Beginning in verse 12 he now really begins to see the architecture of the city and it's staggering. Let me read it again. He first talks about the wall around the city. He says, it had a great and high wall with 12 gates and at the gates 12 angels and names were written on them which are the names of the 12 tribes of the sons of Israel. There were three gates on the east and three gates on the north and three gates on the south and three gates on the west. And the wall of the city had 12 foundation stones and on them were the 12 names of the 12 apostles of the Lamb. Now, let's talk about this because we are going to learn in a second that this city is like a cube. An amazing, huge, crystal clear diamond cube. And after John gets the bird's eye view of the city, the next thing as they walk toward it that he notices is this wall that goes all the around the city. Now, here's the question. Why is there a wall around the New Jerusalem? Well, in the Old Testament, what was the purpose of walls around the city? Protection, right? In the Old Testament, you built walls around city it is protect the city from its enemies, to protect the city from invaders. So is that the purpose of the wall around the New Jerusalem? Well, I hardly think so. Why? Because it's heaven. There is no sin. There are no bad guys. There are no enemies. There are no invaders. There's nothing to protect us from. So the purpose of the wall cannot be protection. Some say, well, maybe the purpose of the wall is to symbolize the exclusion of sin. Well, that's possible but I really think there is a more specific answer, a more specific reason as to why there is this wall around the city. And I'm going to give you that reason at the end of the message so you have to stay awake the rest of the way in order to get it. We'll come back to that. Notice, it also has 12 gates. It also has 12 foundations. Now, one of the things we learn from the text is that on each gate there is written the name of one of the 12 tribes of Israel. So the question is why? Why does each gate have written on it one of the names of the 12 tribes of Israel? I think the answer is, it's teaching us that the New Jerusalem, the same one Abraham longed for, will be the eternal city that all the Old Testament saints will live in. They'll all be there. Adam, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, Ruth, Ester. All the prophets, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel. They'll all be there. It will be the eternal home of all the Old Testament saints. And so, on each gate is written a name of the 12 tribes of Israel. Now, what else do we learn about these gates? Well, it says there's three on each side. Three on the north, three on the south, three on the east, three on the west. So it's set up in perfect symmetry. God is a god of order. Perfect symmetry around the city. Which, by the way, is exactly how Israel used to

camp around the Old Testament tabernacle when they would camp in the wilderness. They would have three tribes on the north, three on the south, three on the east and three on the west. So there are 12 gates, 3 on each side. We also know from the text that at each gate there stands an angel. 12 angels, 12 gates. Now, why is there an angel at each gate? Well, again, it is not for protection because there's no need to be protected in heaven. It's a perfect place. So why are they there? I think they're an honor guard. Much like the soldiers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington or think about those soldiers that stand outside the Buckingham palace, those funky looking hats and the red coats. They're kind of like an honor guard. And I believe there's an angel at every gate that's an honor guard. And by the way, because there's gates on all four sides, that tells me this. We will be able at will to go in and out of the city. Remember, there's more to heaven than the city. The city is the capital city of the entire new heaven and the new earth and outside of the city -- north, south, east and west -- there is an incredible beauty to explore. And as we go in and out of the city, every time we return in to the city, there will be an angelic honor guard to welcome us back into the city as children of God. What an amazing thing this is going to be. But notice something else about the gates. If you're in Revelation 21, drop down to verse 25 and look what it says. It says, in the daytime, for there will be no night there, it will always be daytime because the glory of the Lord will always be shining, its gates will never be closed. There will never be a moment that the gates of the city will be closed. For all of eternity we will have uninterrupted access to go outside into the new heavens and the new earth and back inside to this amazing city that God has prepared. Now, by the way, in those verses we read it also said that there are 12 foundations to the wall and each foundation has a name written on it which are the 12 apostles. So why are the names of the 12 apostles on the foundation stones? Well, I think for the same reason the names of the 12 tribes of Israel are on the gates. It's teaching us that not only will this city be the eternal city of all the Old Testament saints, it will also be the eternal city of all the New Testament saints. Every person since Adam who's put their faith in God will live in this city for all of eternity. This amazing, crystal clear, diamond-like city that radiates with the glory of God. Now, now we get to the dimensions of the city and here's where it goes beyond our minds to grasp. So let me again look first of all at verse 15 because now the city's going to be measured. Notice the action of measuring this takes place. Here's what it says in verse 15. John says, the one who spoke with me, and that would be the angel, had a gold measuring rod to measure the city and its gates and its wall. Now, I kind of -- I kind of find this interesting and this is pure speculation. This is not thus sayeth God. This is thus thinketh Scott. There's a big difference. And -- but you kind of think, well, why did the angel measure the city? I just got this hunch. John's a man, right? I mean, men are men. It doesn't matter what generation, right? Can you imagine the angel saying, John, take a look at this enormous crystal clear, unbelievable city! And you can just see John going, wow. Hey, how much square footage is in

that thing? You know? I just kind of have a hunch it happened like that. So the angel says, well, here I'll find out real quick and the Bible says the angel measured the city, the wall and the gates. Now, the Bible says that the angel measured that city using a 10-foot golden rod. The word translated rod, golden rod, is a word describing a 10-foot rod in the original language. The angel measures the city using a 10-foot golden rod. Now, I want us to think about this for a second and you'll find out why in a little bit. But if you were to measure something using this 10-foot rod, would it be a daunting task? Well, it depends on what you're measuring, right? If I were to say, hey, I'd like you to measure the width of the Gospel Center using this 10-foot rod, would that be a daunting task? Not really. Wouldn't take you but a couple of minutes, right? Start over there, lay it down, pick it up, lay it down, pick it up until you got to over there. Right? But what if I said this? What if I said to you, I got a job for you to do. I would like you to take this 10- foot golden rod and it's pure gold. You can keep it afterwards. It's pure gold. Anyways, take this 10- foot golden rod. I would like you to go out to m-32, starting in front of the church, going east, I'd like you to measure one mile using this 10-foot pure gold rod. Would that be a little bit of a daunting task? Well, think about it. How many feet are in a mile? And the answer is, 5,280. I did not know that. I looked it up this morning. Okay? 5,280 feet in a mile. This is how long of a rod? 10 feet. So if I was going to use this rod to measure 1 mile, 5,280 feet, how many times would I have to put the rod down and pick it back up? 528 times, right? So here's my question. How long would it take you to measure 1 mile where you had to put this down and pick it up 528 times? How long would it take you to measure 1 mile using this 10-foot rod? Quite a while, don't you think? You probably would spend the better part of your day doing that, right? You say, what are you getting at I'm going to tell you a little bit so just keep that in your mind. We're going to come back to it, all right? So the angel takes this 10-foot rod in order to measure the city. Now, in verses 16 and 17, we see the accuracy of the measuring. Here's what he discovers. The city is laid out as a square. Its length is as great as the width, and he measured the city with the rod 1,500 miles. Its length and width and height are equal. And he measured its walls 72 yards according to human measures. So what do we learn about this city? Well, he says it is laid out like a cube. It's a perfect cube. It's the same length as it is width as it is height. Now, some have suggested that that could be true of a pyramid, as well. And that's accurate. A pyramid could be the same length, width and height, as well. But why do I think it's a cube? Because in the temple there was the Holy of Holies. And what dwelt in the Holy of Holies? The presence of God. And the Holy of Holies was shaped as a perfect cube. 20 feet by 20 feet by 20 feet. So it makes sense to me that this heavenly city in which the very presence of God will dwell for eternity would model that very same cube although this time it's much higher than 20 feet, much wider than 20 feet, much longer than 20 feet. According to the text, when the angel picked up the rod and measured the city, he discovered it was 1,500 miles long by 1,500 miles deep by 1,500 miles high. Now, by the way, some of your translations may say it was 12,000 stadias. 12,000 stadias in that culture is equal to around 1,500 miles in our culture today.

Now, I want you to think about this because remember I told you that the angel measured the city using a 10-foot pole. Now, I asked you earlier, how long would it take you using a 10-foot pole to measure 1 mile where you had to lay the pole down and pick it back up 528 times. And we agreed that would be a pretty daunting task. Well, how many times do you suppose using a 10-foot pole you would have to lay down the pole and pick it back up in order to measure not 1 mile but 1,500 miles? And the answer is, you would have to take this pole and put it down and pick it back up 792,000 times. That's a little more daunting, isn't it? But remember, he didn't just measure it one way. He measured it three ways. So if you take 792,000 and multiply it by 3 for the angel to do his job, he would have had to have laid down and picked up the golden rod 2,376,000 times. And you're going, so what? Well, I think there is something to think about because it appears in the text that the angel did it in an instant. Doesn't that say something about the staggering speed of an angel who in an instant could use a 10-foot rod to measure a city that would have required him to put it down and pick it up 2,376,000 times? Now, here's where my mind just kind of goes goofy because I can't help but wonder if maybe, just maybe, in our glorified state with perfect bodies if we maybe, just maybe, will be able to travel at the speed of an angel. I am so glad there's no motion sickness in heaven. I'd be in trouble. You know? This is an amazing thing to think about this angel measuring the city with a 10-foot golden rod. Now, let's try to begin to wrap our minds around how big this city is. How big is a city that is 1,500 miles wide by 1,500 miles deep by 1,500 miles tall? Well, let's start with a map of the United States. And when we look at the map of the United States, I would ask you this question. What do you consider to be a very large city in the United States of America? I mean, besides Grayling, what do you consider to be a very large city in the United States of America? You might say Los Angeles. You might say New York. You might say Houston. So let's pick Los Angeles. And if I were to say to you, if I were to mark Los Angeles on this map, how big would the mark be? Just a little dot, right? That's all -- just a little dot is all that it would take up even though it's an enormous city. Well, what happens if you take a city that's 1,500 miles long, 1,500 deep and 1,500 high and you put it on the map of the United States of America and this is what you get right here. That is what the city would look like. Folks, this city would go from New York to Denver, Colorado, and from the Canadian border all the way down in to Florida. It's a humongous city. And just the surface level, just the surface level would be 2,250,000 square miles, just the bottom surface level. Now, to give you an idea, the city of London which I think we all would agree is a very large city, the city of London is 140 square miles. Just the surface of this city is 2,250,000 square miles. In other words, it is more than 15,000 times the square miles of London. But, remember, it's not just 1,500 miles high or wide. It's not just 1,500 miles deep. If you take it literally as I do it is also 1,500 miles high. Now, what does that mean? Folks, listen. That's not just one gigantic cathedral ceiling, okay? That tells me there are different levels in this city. By the way, we're talking new heaven, new earth, new bodies. Don't just think that it's all horizontal. I mean, the streets could go this way, as well. This is like the Jetsons cartoon. This is amazing. Now, how many levels might

there be in the city? And the answer is, we really don't know. The Bible doesn't tell us. But let's just guess. Just for the sake of understanding the size. Let's say that every level is 100 feet in height. Now, I believe a story of a building is 10 feet. Is that correct? About 10? We'll multiply that by 10. Today, if you were building a tower every 10 feet would be a story. We'll say every 100 feet. If there was a level every 100 feet in the city, how many levels would be in the city? And the answer is, 79,200 levels. Now, if you take that and each of them have that same square mile, each level of 2,250,000 square miles, if there were just a level every 100 feet, that means there are 178,200,000,000 square miles in the city. I think a few years back the Christian rock band Audio Adrenaline hit the nail right on the head. It's a big, big house with lots and lots of room. And a big, big table with lots and lots of food. And a big, big yard where we can play what? Football! It's a big, big house. And then there's the critics. Bless their pea picking brains. I read one critic today who said, that proves the Bible can't be true because no one can breathe at that altitude. And I'm thinking, you idiot. I know that's not spiritual and I confessed it as sin later but that's what I thought. It's a new heaven! It's a new earth! We have new bodies! We have new lungs! There will be no problem breathing at that level. Do you realize that the New Jerusalem is bigger than 15 times the combined surface of the entire earth including land and water? Let me illustrate it another way. When I sat down and kind of went through these descriptions with brad he mentioned this as an illustration that was perfect. Let's think about the International Space Station. You've all heard of that. How many of you would agree that the International Space Station orbits pretty high up in the air? You don't think it does? It does. How high does it orbit? 220 miles. The International Space Station orbits 220 miles above the earth's surface and we would consider that a long way up. Right? Do you realize that the New Jerusalem will be more -- almost 7 times higher than the International Space Station orbits? You see, I think there's a reason why God in the over 550 passages in the Bible that talk about heaven doesn't give us a whole lot of detail because our finite human minds cannot even begin to grasp the awesomeness of what eternity is going to be like. Now, notice one more thing. Notice that the angel also measures the wall around the city and it's kind of staggering what he comes up with and I love the fact that it said in that verse that the angelic measurements are the same as human measurements because some say, well, you can't take that literally. Who knows what angel measurements are? Well, it is very clear. It's same as human measurements. We can take it literally. And when he measures the wall, he finds it to be 72 yards or 216 feet. Now, some would say, well, that must be the thickness of the wall. I don't think so. I think when you look at a wall and you ask for the dimensions you're usually talking about the height. I think it's the height. Now, let's talk about that. This is a 216-foot tall wall. Now, is that a tall wall? Absolutely. If you were to stand -- can you imagine standing next to a wall that's 216 feet high? Can you imagine that? I mean, listen. That's the equivalent of like a 20-story building. Brad tells me there is no 20-story building in Michigan north of flint. We don't have one to go look at. This is a tall wall. When you're standing there

and you're looking at a 216-foot tall wall that surrounds a city that's 1,500 miles by 1,500 miles by 1,500 miles that's extraordinary and I'm pretty sure Donald Trump's going to get China to pay for that wall. But anyway, you got this incredible wall all the way around the city and that's a huge wall! That was bad, wasn't it? Anyway. But now compare that 216-foot wall to a 1,500-mile high city. Now let me ask you. How big is the wall? Not very, huh? Do you know what the equivalent would be literally? The equivalent would be like the street curb around the empire state building. So let me go back to a question I asked earlier in the message what's the purpose of the wall? I mean, a 216-foot wall isn't much compared to a 1,500-mile high city. What's the purpose of the wall? And I think the answer is this. I think it's simple. I think the reason for the wall is to show beauty. In fact, you know what we're going to see next Sunday? There are 12 foundational levels and each level is a beautiful, pure, costly stone. 12 different types of stones. In fact, we are going to have a jeweler with us next week who's going to walk us through those stones and help us wrap our minds around what it might look like. And those gates that we talked about, according to what we'll see next Sunday, they're made of huge, gigantic pearls. Why would God make a city like that? For beauty. To bring pleasure to who? To you. You know why God made that city? Because, child of God, God loves you. And He wants you to enjoy the beauty and splendor of heaven for all of eternity. In fact, He wants that so bad He sent his own Son Jesus Christ to come into this world to die for your sin so that you could be forgiven through faith in Jesus Christ and spend eternity in God's heaven. I'll never forget my first trip to Israel. This March will be my fifth trip to the Holy Land but my first trip there were three things I really longed for. Number one, I wanted to pray in the Garden of Gethsemane. Number two, I wanted to get baptized in the Jordan River. And number three, I wanted to see the holy city, Jerusalem. I've studied the Bible my whole life. Since I was 18 years old I have studied it scholastically and professionally. I have seen in the scripture all that took place in the confines of that holy city and I longed to see that city with my own eyes and I'll never forget it. I'll never forget that night after dark that we were driving in the bus up the mountain because Jerusalem sits on a mountain, towards Jerusalem. And the guide came on and he said, in just a few moments outside of the left side of the window of the bus you'll catch your first glimpse of the holy city, Jerusalem. And I looked out the window and there it was all lit up in the night sky. And I never in my life dreamed that that would be an emotional moment but it was. It was highly emotional. But, folks, that pales in comparison to what it will be like when the day comes that I catch my first glimpse of the New Jerusalem. It's kind of odd because the more I study heaven and the older I get the more I find myself becoming homesick for a city that I have never been to before. What a day that will be when my Jesus I will see. When I look into His face, the one who saved me by His grace. When He takes me by the hand and leads me through the promised land. What a day, glorious day, that will be. Would you stand with me for prayer?

And, Father, I thank You for the little glimpse You give us in scripture about this amazing city. And, Father, the more I study it, the more I try to picture it in my mind. The more I become less and less enamored by the things of this world because the truth of the matter is this world is really not my home. I am a citizen of the heavenly city, and that's why You have commanded us as our children not to lay up treasure on earth where moth and rust corruption and where thieves break through and steal. But rather, to lay up for ourselves treasures in heaven where moth and rust does not corrupt and where thieves do not break in and steal. So my prayer is for myself and for every other follower of Jesus in this room, my prayer is that You would help us to so long for heaven that the things of this earth become very insignificant.
