4 LESSON 1 JUNE 5, 2016 Scripture Lesson Text ZEPH. 1:4 I will also stretch out mine hand upon Ju dah, and upon all the inhabitants of Je-ru sa-lem; and I will cut off the remnant of Ba al from this place, and the name of the Chem a-rims with the priests; 5 And them that worship the host of heaven upon the housetops; and them that worship and that swear by the LORD, and that swear by Mal cham; 6 And them that are turned back from the LORD; and those that have not sought the LORD, nor enquired for him. 14 The great day of the LORD is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly, even the voice of the day of the LORD: the mighty man shall cry there bitterly. 15 That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness, 16 A day of the trumpet and alarm against the fenced cities, and against the high towers. 2:3 Seek ye the LORD, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the LORD S anger. 5 The Day of the Lord Lesson: Zephaniah 1:4-6, 14-16; 2:3 Read: Zephaniah 1:2 2:4 TIME: roughly B.C. PLACE: Jerusalem GOLDEN TEXT Seek ye the Lord, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the Lord s anger (Zephaniah 2:3). Preparing to Teach the Lesson TODAY S AIM Facts: to understand that because Israel had strayed from God and would not repent, God would bring judgment. Principle: to see that God will always bring judgment on sin that is unrepented of. Application: to see that like the people of Judah, we must heed God s warnings if we are to avoid judgment. INTRODUCING THE LESSON God s judgment is often frightening and severe. In our day of tolerance for practically everything, it is seen as politically incorrect to judge any action or person. But this popular notion need not force us to throw out all discernment and discretion. We must see the foolishness and the sinfulness of doing that which offends God. We must be aware that His judgment will come in His way and His time on what He declares to be wrong. It is His view that counts and that will prevail no matter what others may say. DEVELOPING THE LESSON 1. God hates duplicity (Zeph. 1:4-6). It is never right to turn aside from the clear instruction of the Lord and 4 believe in someone or something else. When we depart from the pure Word of God and add something else, we will be facing a day of the Lord (vs. 7) unless we return to Him and repent of our duplicity. Zephaniah says that judgment is coming on those who have not sought the Lord and have been swayed by false beliefs and practices. 2. God s judgment is near at hand (Zeph. 1:14-16). As fallen human beings, we cannot see the enormity of sin. We cannot see how spiritually hideous it is to fail to honor the Lord. We get just a glimpse of sin s depth when we read about the crucifixion and the Lord Jesus crying out in great agony, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? (Matt. 27:46). The penalty for sin is death and hell. When a person sees enough of God at the judgment to realize that He is what his soul has hungered for all his life, and then is thrown out alone into outer darkness, the enormity of his sin and its consequences will begin to become apparent. Zephaniah tells us that the day of the Lord is near, and it is coming quickly.
