University Presbyterian Church Order of Worship July 24, :00am 10th Sunday After Pentecost <<INVITED>> Instrumental Prelude: Nearer My God, to Thee arr. Diane Bish Hannah Byun, Principal Organist Responsive Call to Worship: Psalm 100 LEADER: Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth. PEOPLE: Worship the Lord with gladness; come into his presence with singing. Know that the Lord is God. It is he that made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, bless his name. For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations. *Opening Hymn #99: When Morning Gilds the Skies When morning gilds the skies, my heart awakening cries, Alike at work and prayer to Jesus I repair, Does sadness fill my mind? A solace here I find, Or fades my earthly bliss? My comfort still is this, The night becomes as day, when from the heart we say, The powers of darkness fear when this sweet chant they hear, Be this, while life is mine, my canticle divine, Be this th eternal song through all the ages long,
Welcome Scripture Reading: Luke 10:25-37 (p.844) 25 Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. Teacher, he said, what must I do to inherit eternal life? 26 He said to him, What is written in the law? What do you read there? 27 He answered, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself. 28 And he said to him, You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live. 29 But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, And who is my neighbor? 30 Jesus replied, A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, Take care of him; and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend.' 36 Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers? 37 He said, The one who showed him mercy. Jesus said to him, Go and do likewise. Prayer of Confession and Assurance of Pardon *Hymn #516: Be Still and Know Be still and know that I am God, Be still and know that I am God. Be still and know that I am God. I am the Lord that healeth thee. I am the Lord that healeth thee. I am the Lord that healeth thee. In thee, O Lord, I put my trust. In thee, O Lord, I put my trust. In thee, O Lord, I put my trust. Invitation to Children s Worship Announcements & *Greeting Time <<ENCOUNTERED>> *Hymn #809: Doxology Praise God from whom all blessings flow,

Story of Hope: Jer Swigart Prayer of Dedication Offertory: True Light Keith Hampton Summer Choir; David Gardner, director; Veronica Moss, soloist This little light of mine, I m gonna let it shine. This little light of mine, I m gonna let it shine. This little light of mine, I m gonna let it shine, Almighty God is light, In the beginning, out of the darkness, God created, Almighty God is Light, Don t let the light that You ve given me die, And don t desert my mind. But let the one who serves You Praise You again and again. In the beginning, out of the darkness, God created, Almighty God is Light, You are the one who judges right from wrong. Your glory excites no envy. But let the one who serves You, Praise You again and again. This little light of mine, I m gonna let it shine, Everywhere I go, I want the world to know God gave the world True Light. Hold onto the true light I m gonna let it shine. Everywhere I go, I want the world to know, God gave the world True Light! True Light, I m gonna let it shine, Everywhere I go, I want the world to know, God gave the world True Light!
True Light, I m gonna let it shine, Everywhere I go, I want the world to know, God gave the world True Light! Sermon: Love Anyway Jer Swigart Text: Luke 10:25-37 (p.844) 25 Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. Jesus said to him, Go and do likewise. *Hymn of Response #568: Take My Life and Let It Be Consecrated Take my life and let it be consecrated to thee; Take my hands and let them move at the impulse of thy love, At the impulse of thy love. Take my feet and let them be swift and beautiful for thee; Take my voice and let me sing always, only, for my King, Always, only, for my King. Take my lips and let them be filled with messages for thee; Take my silver and my gold, not a mite would I withhold, Not a mite would I withhold. Take my love, my God, I pour at thy feet its treasure store; Take myself and I will be ever, only, all for thee, Ever, only, all for thee. <<SENT>> Prayers of the People & the Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as
we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. *Closing Hymn #670: Rise Up, O Saints of God! Rise up, O saints of God! from vain ambitions turn; Christ rose triumphant that your hearts with nobler zeal might burn. Rise up, O saints of God! His kingdom s task embrace; Redress sin s cruel consequence; give justice larger place. Give heed, O saints of God! Creation cries in pain; Stretch forth your hand of healing now, with love the weak sustain. Commit your hearts to seek the paths which Christ has trod, And, quickened by the Spirit s power, rise up, O saints of God! *Benediction Instrumental Postlude: Postlude on Darwall s 148 th Charles Callahan Hannah Byun, Principal Organist _+_+_+_+_+_+_ PASTORAL PARTICIPANTS Jer Swigart, Guest Preacher Tim Snow, Executive Pastor Ken Kierstead, Senior Director, Outreach Alice Collins, Liturgist David Gardner, Director of Traditional Worship & Arts Hannah Byun, Principal Organist GUEST PREACHER: Jer Swigart JER SWIGART has worked in the field of peacemaking and conflict transformation since 2005 when he served as the communications liaison between the Pakistani military and the United Nations in the aftermath of the Northern Pakistani earthquake. 6 CURRENT SERMON SERIES MANY VOICES: A Borderless Gospel Borders and boundaries provide a sense of place, distinctiveness, definition, and sometimes a healthy sense of security. But they can also define spaces of complacency and comfort or become barriers that divide, separate, and create obstacles to the full life into which Jesus invites us. This summer, special guests from diverse places around the country and the world will serve as our preachers. We ve given them a great question to frame their messages: From where you are in the Kingdom, what do you sense the Spirit saying to the Church for this time? It is a challenging question that will engage a gospel that transcends boundaries and invites us to follow Jesus into the great adventure of Kingdom life. Families with young children are always welcome to worship together in the Sanctuary. The service is also played on closed-circuit TV in Knox Parlor, just outside the Sanctuary, which is available for parents and children, if desired. To request Chancel flowers in memory or in honor of a loved one, please contact Bob Davies (x143, bobd@upc.org).
