date: Bible Passage: 1 Kings (Elijah on Mt. Carmel and God s Whisper) REMEMBER VERSE Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth. Psalm 46:10 Yahweh Alone Is God Schedule Anticipate 5 10 minutes Celebrate & Respond Large Group minutes Respond & Bless Small Group minutes Environment: KNOWING This lesson highlights the environment of KNOWING by showing how God revealed Himself as Yahweh the only true and existing God who has always been and will always be. He gives us the gift of knowing and glorifying Him.. TruResources are developed in partnership with ROCKHARBOR Church and a national network of family and children s ministry leaders. 2 Inspire NOTES: Tiny hands stretched up toward my face. Soft little fingers landed on a raised freckle on my right cheek. From as early as six months old, my youngest child rubbed his fingers across this freckle when I kissed him goodnight as if this identifying mark assured him I truly was the mama who always brought comfort, rest, and security. For years my son wouldn t go to sleep until he put his little hand on my face to experience the comforting consistency of that little freckle. When he was very young, there was no other person who had the same ability to comfort and calm him. Even my husband, who by nature is nurturing and kind, could not produce the same comfort. When I read Scripture and see the names of God, especially Yahweh, the Lord, I see the identifying marks of God. His names tell me that only Yahweh is God. No other being has been or will ever be as worthy as He is. Thinking back on the days when my son was an infant, I see a picture of utter dependence. I desire that this be the essence of my devotion to Yahweh. I want my most devout worship to put God above every other relationship. I long for Yahweh alone as the ultimate power and authority in my life. I pray for an infantlike dependency on God as the only One worthy of my full trust and devotion. Amy Palmerton TruStory Team 2

Equip Yahweh means the one true and existing God. The Hebrew people used this name to distinguish God from the temporal gods devised by the pagan people living all around them. Whenever we see the word Lord in Scripture, it signifies this name for God: Yahweh. Throughout the Bible we often see how peoples names display truth about them. For example, Elijah s name means the Lord Jehovah is my God. This name indicates that Elijah could be trusted to defend God s truth and principles, even in the face of opposition. And he did! Elijah, a miracle-working Israelite prophet who opposed the worship of Baal, lived in the northern kingdom, under the rule of a king named Ahab who endorsed the worship of the false god Baal and made it the official religion in Israel. Though Elijah knew the danger of standing against Ahab (punishment and ultimately death), he remained committed to dismantling the worship of false idols. As a result, Elijah invited the prophets of Baal to a contest. When Baal failed to answer the frenzied cries of his prophets, Elijah put his offering on the fire and then soaked it with water. Answer me, O Lord, answer me, so these people will know that you, O Lord, are God, he cried (1 Kings 18:37). In answer, fire from God licked up the sacrifice and everything around it. In response the people fell on their faces and declared, The Lord he is God! (v. 39). Environment of KNOWING Nothing could be more important than knowing and being known by God. We live in a world that denies absolute truth, and yet God s Word offers just that. As we create an environment that upholds and displays God s truth, we give children a foundation based on knowing God, His Word, and a relationship with Him through Christ. God is holy, mighty, and awesome, yet He has chosen to make Himself known to us! The 10 environments give us ways to create a climate that puts God on display. Encourage your families to discover more about creating the environment of KNOWING in their homes by checking out HomeFront: A Spiritual Parenting Resource and Spiritual Parenting by Michelle Anthony. Although Elijah witnessed this amazing display of God s power, God wasn t done revealing Himself. When Elijah hid in a cave after the contest, terrified of Ahab and Jezebel (who wanted to kill him), God spoke to him in a gentle whisper. In this part of The Big God Story, we see that sometimes God reveals Himself in dramatic ways, but other times He speaks quietly. No matter how God speaks to us, we can be confident that He alone is God. 3

Support Yahweh is the one true and existing God. This statement brings us face-to-face with the reality of our own personal knowledge of God. How do we come to a place where our head knowledge of God becomes part of us, and, as a result, is shown by our actions? It begins by trusting that God is who He says He is: I am who I am. God is perfect; God is just; God is kind; God is faithful. God is powerful and eternal. He operates outside of time and yet stays completely aware of each hair on our heads. God is love, and God is comfort. God is infinitely wise. These descriptions of God are only inspiring words on a page unless we make them part of our experience with Him. If you find yourself more devoted to the advice of friends than the Word of God, then perhaps this week would be a good time to dig deeper and seek out the wisdom of God. If you find it hard to read through Scripture, invite someone in your faith community to study it with you, or join a Bible study within your faith community. 7 SMALL Group SECTION Anticipate// 5 10 min. Small Group Leaders An energizing time for parents and kids to start engaging with the material that will be presented in the lesson. It is intentionally designed to spark curiosity and cultivate a sense of awe and wonder about God. Encourage parents to participate in this time with their kids. Tru Olympics Elijah challenged the prophets of the false god, Baal, to a contest on Mt. Carmel, to see whose God, the one true God of the Israelites or Baal, was real and all-powerful. After hours and hours of the prayers and pleas of Baal s prophets, nothing happened. But when Elijah cried out to Yahweh, the Lord, fire came down from heaven and devoured the sacrifice he had prepared for God. SUPPLIES gold, silver, and bronze medals (see tru.davidccook.com) markers or colored pencils scissors hole punch ribbon Long Jump painter s or masking tape Javelin or Discus Throw disposable plates straws painter s or masking tape Weight Lifting rocks, bricks, books, or other heavy objects basket or bag Partner Church Comments The kids loved the active nature of this ANTICIPATE as well as the competitive aspect. It was a good variety of games that catered to various strengths and tied to the lesson in a way I hadn t thought of in terms of the Mt. Carmel encounter being a contest. The Beacon Synchronized Swimming none SET UP Print, color, and cut out the medals. Punch a hole in each medal, thread a ribbon through the hole, and tie it. Make sure the ribbon can fit over a child s head. Create different Olympics stations around the room so kids can play the games simultaneously. For the Long Jump and Javelin or Discus Throw, tape a line down the length of the room; for Weight Lifting, set out the basket and place the heavy objects nearby. Assign a leader to each station. ENGAGE Invite the kids to challenge each other in Tru Olympics. Give gold medals to kids who finish first, silver medals to kids who finish second, and bronze medals to those who finish third. Play until every child wins at least one medal. 7

Partner Church Comments We completely modified our schedule this week to allow for more time for the Olympics and we are so glad we did. The kids loved it. The synchronized swimming was so hilarious! The kids liked earning medals, and I could hear them telling their parents all about it as they walked away. Mountainbrook Community Church You could use rolled-up fruit leather or an empty paper towel roll as a baton for a relay race. Peninsula Covenant Church Long Jump Have the kids line up, side to side and facing the same direction, along the tape line. On your signal, have the kids jump as far as they can. If you have more space, encourage kids to run (one at a time) up to the line and jump off from the line on one foot. Use a small piece of tape to mark where each child lands. See who jumps the farthest. Javelin or Discus Throw Hand each child a discus (disposable plate) or a javelin (straw). Have each competitor stand at the end of the tape line and throw the discus or javelin. Use small pieces of tape to mark where the objects land. See who throws her object the farthest. Weight Lifting One at a time, have the kids step up to the basket. Put one item in the basket and have them lift it with one arm. Put another item in the basket and have them lift it again (still using one arm). Repeat until the basket becomes too heavy to lift. See who lifts the most objects. Synchronized Swimming Form the kids into teams of about five. Give them a few minutes to think of a creative synchronized act. Then have each team perform for the group. Let audience members vote on which groups should win gold, silver, and bronze. Optional: Other Games Feel free to play other types of Olympic-style games with your kids. For example, use the disposable plates as ice skates and have your kids skate around the floor. Or invite them to participate in small contests such as Thumb Wars or Rock, Paper, Scissors. 8

LARGE Group SECTION Celebrate//20 35 min. Host/Storyteller Kids get to be a part of the faith community of God s family. They participate in traditions and share them with newcomers, connect through fun and interaction, and experience The Big God Story through storytelling. Welcome and Traditions REMEMBER VERSE This week s Remember Verse comes from the environment of KNOWING. The environment changes every four weeks. Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth. Psalm 46:10 Connect Question Would you rather have the power to control fire, wind, earth, or water? Activity: Hopscotch SUPPLIES fabric quilting squares or foam squares painter s, masking, or double-sided tape Connect Activity slide (see tru.davidccook.com) optional: sidewalk chalk In the World Videos A Video Tradition Every week before the service, look through the lesson. Think about the lesson title, digest the material in The Big God Story section, and imagine a video short that could introduce what the kids will hear. For instance, if the lesson talks about Noah and the flood, film your child responding to a rainbow she found in the sky. Or if the lesson discusses Peter walking on water, film yourself or a friend trying to walk on water something that would help the kids imagine some part of The Big God Story in the midst of their everyday world. SET UP Create two hopscotch games on your floor (side by side) by taping down the fabric or foam squares. Optional: Go outside and have kids draw hopscotch games using sidewalk chalk. Engage Elijah asked the Israelites, Ahab, and the prophets of Baal: How much longer will you waver, hobbling between two opinions? (1 Kings 18:21 NLT). Elijah knew that Yahweh alone is God, and he knew God would prove Himself that day on Mt. Carmel. Play these hopscotch games to help your kids think about what it means to hobble. For Smaller Groups Ask the kids to pair up, link arms, and stand at the start of the two side-by-side hopscotch games. Then tell them they need to jump through the hopscotch games together while hopping only on their right feet. When they get to the end, they should turn around and come back together, this time hopping only on their left feet. For Larger Groups Divide the kids into two teams and line up each team behind a hopscotch game. Tell the kids that on your signal, the first person in each line should hurry across the hopscotch game while hopping only on the right foot, turn around, and hop back to the start line on the left foot. Then the next person in line should go, and so on. The first team to have all its members hop through the game wins. 9

NOTES: The Big God Story Leader Tip Before sharing this part of The Big God Story, tell your kids they re about to hear a true story that s recorded in the Bible. Open your Bible to 1 Kings 18 19, and invite kids to follow along in their own Bibles as you storytell. Yahweh Alone Is God SUPPLIES Bible Timeline slide and animation (see tru.davidccook.com) images: Ten Commandments, Red Sea, pillar of cloud/pillar of fire, map of Israel and Judah, Elijah on Mt. Carmel, fire, rocks, mountain (see tru.davidccook.com) audio: 1 Kings 18:36 37, wind, earthquake, fire (see tru.davidccook.com) props: poster board, piece of thin fabric or sheet of paper, 12 stones, towel, plastic tub, pitcher of water SET UP Place the poster board where the kids can see it and set the marker nearby. Set the thin fabric or paper in the storytelling area. Fill the pitcher with water, and set it near the tub, stones, and towel in the storytelling area. Cue the images and sound effects. ENGAGE Throughout The Big God Story, the Israelites experienced God as Yahweh the Lord. Yahweh means I am who I am, or the one true, existing God. God has no beginning or end. He is. His character never changes because He never changes. The Israelites, God s chosen people, had a relationship with God. Can you think of some ways God showed Himself to be Yahweh the one true, existing God in The Big God Story? (Allow kids to answer, and write their answers on the poster board. To refresh their memory, show images of the Israelites receiving the Ten Commandments, walking through the Red Sea, and following God as a cloud by day and fire by night.) It s awesome how God showed the people that He is the Lord by using a man named Elijah. Elijah was a prophet who lived during a time when Israel was no longer united. It had split into two countries: Israel and Judah (show map of Israel and Judah). The northern kingdom of Israel and their kings had continually disobeyed what God had told them to do (which was to worship Him only). In fact, Ahab, the 10

The Big God Story NOTES: king of Israel during Elijah s day, made everyone in the nation worship the false god Baal instead of the real God, Yahweh. Because Yahweh, the Lord, required His people to know that He was the only true God, He used His prophet Elijah to set up a contest to show everyone that Yahweh alone is the only real, living God. Elijah invited the Israelites and the prophets of the false gods Baal and Asherah (all 850 of them) to Mt. Carmel (show image of Elijah on Mt. Carmel). There, each side would choose an offering, make an altar with stones, and pray that fire would come down and burn up the sacrifice. Only the one true, living God could do that! The prophets of Baal went first. They prayed for hours (act out each of these in an exaggerated way), chanted, begged, and cried out to their false god. They ripped their clothes (rip the piece of fabric or paper) and hurt themselves, all in an effort to get their false god s attention. Elijah teased them asking if their god was sleeping, or had gone on a trip. By the middle of the day, nothing had happened. The prophets of Baal were exhausted and gave up (dramatically fall to the floor). Then Elijah built an altar with 12 stones. (Build an altar in the plastic tub with the stones.) He placed the sacrifice on the altar and poured water on it (place the towel on the altar and pour water over it), filling a trench around the altar (fill the tub with water). Then Elijah prayed, (kneel, dim the lights, and play audio of 1 Kings 18:36 37): Lord let it be known today that you are God in Israel Answer me so these people will know that you, O Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again. (Pause. Then turn the lights back up and stand up). Immediately God answered by sending down fire that burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, and all of the water in the trench. (Show image of fire.) Wow! How would you feel if you saw that happen? (Encourage the kids to answer.) You would probably fall on your knees! Well, that s exactly what happened. Everyone there fell on their knees and said, (consider asking the kids to kneel like the Israelites), The Lord he is God! (1 Kings 18:39). You d think that afterward everyone would have wanted to worship Yahweh the Lord. But it wasn t that way for everyone. So, to completely destroy the worship of false gods, Elijah killed all 850 prophets of Baal and Asherah, and King Ahab didn t like that at all! The king now wanted Elijah dead! So Elijah ran for his life. After many days of travel, he came to a cave in a mountain named Horeb. There in the cave, Elijah complained to God because he was exhausted and lonely. Elijah had seen God s fierce display of power at Mt. Carmel, but, in this moment, Elijah needed comfort. Because God is a loving God, He answered Elijah s prayer but, this time, in a very different way. 11

The Big God Story NOTES: God told Elijah: Go out and stand on the mountain for the Lord is about to pass by. Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks (Play wind sound effect and show image of rocks. Pause.) but the Lord was not in the wind (1 Kings 19:11). Then, a great earthquake shook everything! (Play earthquake sound effect. Pause.) But the Lord was not in the earthquake. Next, a fire burned around him! (Play fire cracking sound effect and show image of fire. Pause.) But the Lord was not in the fire. After the fire came shh. (Pause, and encourage the kids to listen.) Did you hear that? (Pause, and speak softly.) It was a gentle whisper. So Elijah went out on the mountain to speak with Yahweh, the Lord. Then the Lord comforted Elijah and told him what to do next: to anoint future kings and train the next prophet, Elisha, whom we ll talk about next week. Through the whisper, God showed Himself as Yahweh, the Lord the gentle and loving God. Throughout this part of The Big God Story, we saw the Lord God in some very different ways. We saw Him as an all-consuming fire, bringing glory to Himself and calling His people back to Him. We also saw Him speak softly to His servant, Elijah. Like He was in the time of Elijah, Yahweh alone is God in our world and our lives today. He is the One who loves us, protects us, demands our worship, and comforts us. In everything we need, in every part of our life, Yahweh alone is the Lord He will give Himself the glory, and He always has our best interests at heart. (Give a child-friendly example of how God has revealed Himself to be the one true, living God in your life.) 12

LARGE Group SECTION Respond// min. Host/Worship Leader This is a time for kids to worship through silence, prayer, singing, giving, sharing, thanksgiving, and many other ways. Make plans for your worship time but prepare yourself and your team to hold them loosely if the Holy Spirit leads the group in a different direction. Yahweh, Speak! SUPPLIES Remember Verse slide (see tru.davidccook.com) contemplative worship song (suggestion: Come Unto Me, TruWorship You Are; available to Premium, Unlimited, and Combo users at tru.davidccook.com or itunes) SET UP Cue the slide. ENGAGE Today we heard how Yahweh alone is God. Yahweh is a Hebrew name for God that means the one true, existing God. Because God has no beginning or end, He is the same for all of eternity. In today s part of The Big God Story, Yahweh spoke to His people in two very different ways: first in an amazing display of His power, and then as a gentle whisper spoken to His prophet Elijah. In both of these ways, God revealed something important and unique about Himself: He is the one true, existing God. Let s spend some time right now asking God, the one and only, to speak to us. Though God may not speak to us in an audible voice, like He did to Elijah, He still speaks to His people. He speaks through Scripture, through the words of others, through creation, through emotions, and through other ways. Partner Church Comments After the storytelling and RESPOND, we added a game during which everyone started out by sitting in a circle and then one person left the room. Then the group chose a leader who discreetly directed the group to do certain actions when the person who left the room came back in. Kids and leaders loved it. It really drove home the point that God is big and powerful, but He sometimes comes to us in small things like a whisper. Good Shepherd Church Because God wants to speak to us, He asks us to quiet our minds to seek Him and give Him all of our thoughts. (Show Remember Verse slide.) In fact, He says in Scripture: Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth (Psalm 46:10). God wants us to know that He is Yahweh, the one and only God. It s so amazing that God wants to speak to us! So, today, let s take some time to truly listen to Him. Create a silent environment in which the kids remain absolutely still no talking, eyes closed, relaxed and open to the Holy Spirit. During the silence, encourage the kids to kneel or hold out their hands. Remind them that these prayer postures show God we want Him to speak to us and we want to give Him our undivided attention. After a time of silence, encourage the kids to share what God may have revealed to them, if anything. End with a contemplative worship song. 13

SMALL Group SECTION Respond// min. Small Group Leaders A time to engage in relationship, reflect on the lesson with spiritual conversation, and/or create a meaningful project or piece of art. Partner Church Comments One of our leaders challenged the kids to sit quietly and as still as they could while he read some verses and led in a short prayer. My son commented on how hard it was to sit quietly and try to listen to God, but that even though God didn t tell him anything this time, he wanted to do it again! Voyagers Bible Church Resource Tip Classic Games activities are available for this lesson. Premium, Unlimited, and Combo users may access this resource at tru.davidccook.com. Reflect: Yahweh Alone Is God God is so amazing. He is loving, good, powerful, fierce, gentle, caring, and so many other things. In all the earth, He is the Lord Yahweh the God who loves us dearly and has our best interests at heart. He is Lord over everything we need and in every part of our lives! (Encourage the kids to open their Bibles and read the suggested passages.) Questions for Younger Kids Who was Elijah, and how did God use him in His story? 15 NOTES: Optional: God Question Box Elijah was a very special prophet of God. He was asked to go to some strange places and display God s power, which would be impossible for a human being. But no matter how impossible things seemed, Elijah truly knew that God was listening, providing, and blessing him in very special ways. God wants to give us the same peace. He wants us to know, without a doubt, that He cares about each one of us and will never leave us. SUPPLIES markers shoebox or tissue box paper or index cards pens or pencils optional: magazines or newspapers, scissors, tape SET UP Using the markers, draw question marks all over the outside of the box. Optional: Cut out question marks from newspapers or magazines and tape them onto the box. If not using index cards, cut the paper into strips. ENGAGE Hand a card or paper strip to each child. Ask the kids to write questions or draw things they want to know about God (His characteristics, His power, His promises, His people)and place them in the box. Afterward, encourage the kids to take turns pulling a question out of the box and reading it to the group (leaders, do this for younger kids). If kids have a response to the question, encourage them to answer. If the leader doesn t know the answer to the question, encourage kids to look for the answer in the Bible with their parent(s). Partner Church Comments We taped the pictures around the room, taped a blank piece of paper under each picture, and put a washable marker on a string next to each picture. Then the kids went around to each picture and wrote on the blank paper some words that describe God. Elmbrook Church Engage: God Is God! SUPPLIES whiteboard or poster board dry-erase or regular markers images: ocean, mountains, people laughing, person serving at church, person serving on a missions trip, Bible, outer space, crowd of people (see tru.davidccook.com) paper pens or markers tape 15

NOTES: SET UP Print the images and display them so the kids can see them. Set up the whiteboard or poster board and put markers nearby. ENGAGE What do you know about God? What are some words that describe Him? (Encourage the kids to answer, and write their answers on the board. Some examples: Loving, Good, Powerful, Father, Awesome. ) Do any of you have stories to share about how God is (choose one of the words from the board) in your life? For instance, maybe God showed Himself to be powerful when you saw waves pounding on the beach or heard lightning strike. Maybe He showed Himself to be faithful when He answered one of your prayers. (Encourage kids to share stories, and share some of your own.) Point out the images, and ask older kids to write on each image the ways they see God in them. If it s an image of nature, they might write God is Creator. If it s a picture of people laughing together, they might write God is good to us. For younger kids, talk together about the images and how God is revealed in them. Then ask the kids to tell a story about a time in their lives when they saw God as the one true, existing God. Encourage kids to choose different ways to tell their stories (draw a picture, act out a scene with friends or by themselves, etc.). Give them a few minutes to think about a time when God was God in their lives as well as a way to tell their stories to the group. Then gather in a circle and share. Bonus Engage: Tru Olympics II SUPPLIES clothes hamper or clean trash can paper pens tape SET UP Write God is on a piece of paper and tape it to the hamper or trash can. ENGAGE Have the kids engage in a basketball-style game. Ask the kids to take a piece of paper and on it write or draw things that describe God. Then have them wad up the paper, stand a few feet away from the hoop, and shoot them in. Afterward, take all the wadded paper out and read the words aloud to the group. 16

SMALL Group SECTION Bless// 5 min. Small Group Leaders A blessing can be a prayer of commission, a portion of Scripture, or words of encouragement or guidance. A blessing can be offered in order to ask God s Spirit to overflow from the child s life to bless others or prayed over a child for the purpose of declaring God s protection, joy, or wisdom. As you bless your kids, tell them they have the opportunity to also be a blessing to others. Encourage them to freely share the joy and love they have received from God. Encourage the kids to hold their hands in front of them, palms up. Then open a Bible and read Psalm 46:10 (NLT) (or read the Remember Verse): Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world. May the Lord reveal Himself to you. May He show you His strength through the mighty things He does and let you recognize His voice when He speaks quieter than a whisper.
