2 What period did he live in? Job has no biblical genealogy. There is a mention of the flood (Job 22:16); but no mention of the law or temple; longevity of his life- he lived 140 years AFTER events which included marriage, adult children, great wealth yrs (Abraham s grandfather Serug lived to 230 (Gen 11: 22-23). The evidence would point to the time around the time of Abraham or just before.

3 Job s name in hebrew: Ijobe = hated, persecuted. Patriarch Land of Uz (Heb: oots meaning wooded), Job was perfect, upright, feared elohiym; eschewed (turned away from) evil; He had 7 sons, 3 daughters, sheep, camels, 500 yoke of oxen, she asses, very great household, greatest of all of the men of the east. Job acted as a priest (offers burnt offerings), spoke prophetically; king like status crown. God testifies of Job s uprightness (Job 2:3); his righteous character is upheld by Ezekiel 14:14, 20; James 5:11; Paul quotes from Job 5:13 in 1 Cor 3:19.

4 Adversary stirs up accusation against Job before God. The LORD (Yehovah) permits the adversary to persecute Job. One day Sabeans capture oxen and asses, slay some servants fire from heaven burns up the sheep and servants Chaldeans attack; capture camels, slay servants; great wind destroys sons (and daughters). Then Job arose and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground and worshipped, and said, Naked came I out of my mother s womb and naked shall I return thither,; the LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD. 5 Second attack from adversary he is smitten with boils, goes outside, sits on rubbish heap, smeared in ashes, despised/rejected by all. Eliphaz, Bildad, Zophar (later on Elihu) visit.

6 Job 14:1-16 "Man, who is born of woman, Is short-lived and full of turmoil. (2) "Like a flower he comes forth and withers. He also flees like a shadow and does not remain. (3) "You also open Your eyes on him And bring him into judgment with Yourself. (4) "Who can make the clean out of the unclean? No one! (5) "Since his days are determined, The number of his months is with You; And his limits You have set so that he cannot pass. (6) "Turn Your gaze from him that he may rest, Until he fulfills his day like a hired man. (7) "For there is hope for a tree, When it is cut down, that it will sprout again, And its shoots will not fail. (8) "Though its roots grow old in the ground And its stump dies in the dry soil, (9) At the scent of water it will flourish And put forth sprigs like a plant. (10) "But man dies and lies prostrate. Man expires, and where is he? (11) "As water evaporates from the sea, And a river becomes parched and dried up, (12) So man lies down and does not rise. Until the heavens are no longer, He will not awake nor be aroused out of his sleep. (13) "Oh that You would hide me in Sheol, That You would conceal me until Your wrath returns to You, That You would set a limit for me and remember me! (14) "If a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my struggle I will wait Until my change comes. (15) "You will call, and I will answer You; You will long for the work of Your hands. (16) "For now You number my steps, You do not observe my sin.

7 Job 14:1-2 Man (Heb. adam - mankind) is full of trouble (turmoil, disquiet). Like a flower, cut down, shadow (sundial) mortality, temporary continues not. Originally created in the image of God, but sin brought death Gen 3:17-19 dust you art, and unto dust shall you return. Before resurrection, (Gr. anastasis, raising up), there has to be a laying down, death, burial

8 Job 14:3-6: Job s questioning, knows God sees, but why is God judging him this way, bringing him to account as though at a judgment seat? Job asks - Who can bring a clean thing (pure- morally, ceremonially, physically) out of an unclean? Not one. Humanly impossible. (Isa 64: 6 we are all as an unclean thing ) But possible with God! Days, months, boundaries determined cannot pass (80yrs = 29,200 days or 960 months). Ps 90:12 teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. God is sovereign (Jer 32:17) Turn from him crying out to God to let him alone, to rest, to get on with the day s work even as a hired worker.

9 Job 14: 7-9 The hope of new life illustrated in the created world. A tree will sprout again though it wax old in the earth the stock die yet with favourable conditions it will bud again; Scent of water and sunlight. In like manner the scriptures and the SON of God can give new life! (1 John 5:11-13)

10 Job 14:10-11 But man (Heb. Geber- strong man, warrior) dies, wastes away (3 mins + brain starts to die, temperature drops, necrosis -death of cells, blood drains down, bacteria and fungi within start eating away body cells, gas- stench within a few days, chemical changes in muscles stiffness, rigor mortis. Martha said by this time he stinks: for he *Lazarus+ had been dead four days (John 11:39). Gives up the ghost (to breath out our last breath, but also the separation of our spirit from our body James 2:26 e.g. Jesus on cross) and where is he? Simile like evaporation of water.

11 Job 14:12-13 Man (Heb. iysh a man) lies down, rises not till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep a long time yet it will come. Sleep- a metaphor for rest in death, as a metaphor sleep is not cessation of existence, Job believed there would come a time when the dead would awaken. Verse 13: Hide me in the grave (Heb. a place beneath the ground, a mysterious place, but Job understood it as a place of deliverance from suffering like Lazarus in Luke 16:22). Keep me secret till wrath be past then remember me At the end of the world, heavens depart and roll up, (Matthew 24:29; 2 Peter 3:10-12; 1 st resurrection Revelation 20:6). Jesus is the resurrection and the life John 11:24-25

12 Job 14:14-15 All the days of my appointed The critical question... time will I wait, You shall call, and I will answer you: you will have a desire for the work of your hands. (We desire God, but He also desires us, the work of His hands!) John 5:28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice Job 14: 14-15

13 Job 19: THE HOPE! Do you know your redeemer lives? Do you have that hope of the resurrection? Redeemer (Heb. ga el, someone who had the right and the means or ability to deliver us, to pay the price to purchase us from bondage, exile, death). The LORD Yehovah 18 x in Tanakh e.g. Psalm 19:14; Isa 44:6; 52:3-5; 59:20; 63:16; Jer 31:11. The Lord Jesus Christ is the one by whom we have redemption (Eph 1:7.). In N.T. not called Redeemer but frequently called Saviour- deliverer. Redeemed us to God (Rev 5:9-14).
