1 2013/5774 Beth El Community Shabbaton. Create, Learn, Connect and Play The Shabbaton is an immersive Shabbat experience that brings together the Beth El community for a weekend that includes workshops; kid, family and adult activities; communal meals; and, Jewish celebration and learning. 2013/5774 is the 5th year of this annual gathering of the Beth El community in a restful and restorative setting outside of the regular hustle and bustle of daily life. Coming after the High Holy Days this year, and coinciding with the Torah portion Lech Lecha, this year's Shabbaton is an opportunity for the community to launch the new year and reflect on "returning to our authentic selves." Dates Friday, October 11, 2013 Sunday, October 13, 2013 Location Camp Newman Santa Rosa, California 2013 Shabbaton Vision Create a meaningful immersive Jewish experience and the inspiration and opportunities to Bring it Home Shabbaton Goals CREATE opportunities for meaningful Jewish experiences. We will create and enjoy Jewish music and make Jewish art objects with professional artists and community leaders. LEARN and expand participants' Jewish knowledge. We will engage in study and discussion with distinguished Bay Area scholars and community leaders. CONNECT AND PLAY to promote and strengthen Beth El community connections. We will have fun together, relaxing and spending time with old and new friends. Community members of all generations will connect in a shared community experience that fosters continued involvement in Beth El year round. Community Leadership and Special Guest In addition to Beth El clergy and staff, this year we will be joined by Rabbis Peretz Wolf and Dorothy, guiding exploration of Jewish text and tradition. Professional artists, facilitating the creation of Jewish art and objects Isaac Zones, Beth El songleader, inspiring community celebration through song Beth El members, leading engaging and fun activities that deepen community connections. Kee Tov and BENS staff, providing fun for kids and infusing the weekend with Ruach! 1

Come join a 3 hour round trip biking adventure. You'll need: bike, helmet, water, snack, sunscreen, some prior experience. We will plan trails based on numbers and skill level. Matt Rosen Cooking w/ the Seven Species of Israel Guided Hike Heschel s Playlist I & II The Art of Play Jewish Craft project Jewish Macrame Jewish Music w/ Isaac Zones Make Sh ma Pillowcases Parshat Hashavua w/ Explore the lush and abundant produce of biblical Israel. Seven agricultural products essential in ancient times (barley, wheat, figs, dates, pomegranates, olives and grapes) can bring more richness to our contemporary kitchens. We're going to taste and explore the familiar and exotic flavors, talk about how they were used in antiquity all over the Middle East, and then combine them with ingredients from Asia and Latin America. Featuring the perfect snacks before the wine tasting! Guided 3 4 mile hike. Family friendly for kids up for a 90 minute, nonstrenuous walk on a trail close to camp. Wear walking shoes and bring a hat and water bottle. Two part discussion of Heschel s God, Torah and Israel and examine closely the sources he read and loved. There will be meditation on a selected Heschel text from his many writings and discussion of his provocative ideas. Hasid, scholar, philosopher, and social justice activist; Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel was born in Poland, educated in Germany, persecuted by Nazi Germany, and found refuge in America. He argued that the religious experience is a fundamentally human impulse, not just a Jewish one, and that no religious community can claim a monopoly on religious truth. Workshop attendees will experiment with found objects, nature and mixed media collage in playful ways. Each participant will have the opportunity to choose items that speak to them. We will focus on the moment, the surroundings and our feelings to express our artistic selves. Each creation will be keepsake of our time at the Shabbaton. A fabulous family activity. Join Beth El congregants Mari, Maia and Sascha Ettlinger for macrame bracelet making! Macrame is a form of textile making that uses knots to create patterns. Mari and her girls have everything you need to make a beautiful keep sake from your weekend at the Shabbaton. No experience necessary. Kids welcome. Adult only song session with Beth El community song leader, Isaac Zones. Come learn blessings and the Jewish songs of celebration in a supportive and fun atmosphere. Join Peretz in a hands on family workshop which focuses on the importance of nighttime Jewish ritual. We will be making our own Sh ma pillowcases to take home. Open to families with kids of all ages; grandparents welcome! Explore this week s Torah portion, Lech L cha with. Climbing Tower Alpine Tower is a 50 tall, self supporting structure that provides unique challenges and team oriented experiences for groups of 8 to 36. Camp Newman Staff Self guided hike Trail maps are available in Dining Hall for self guided hikes from camp. Self guided Jewish Meditation will lead participants in the practice of Jewish meditation and singing. No previous experience necessary! & Elizabeth Branoff Swimming Lifeguard on duty. Kids and tots must be supervised by their parents at the pool. Please note designated times for lap swim, adult only and family time. N/A Wandering with a Smart Phone: Values, Family, Community and Judaism in a Digital Culture Trope Idol Poetry Walk Wine Tasting Rabbi Kahn and congregant Jason Brand will lead this chug which will explore the impact of the digital revolution on our lives. Regardless of how much we choose to text, tweet, post or share, new technologies impact us all and raise significant issues about our values, our spirituality, how we raise our children, and how we relate to others and ourselves. We will look specifically at how Judaism can help us answer the questions new technologies raise and guide us thoughtfully through this time of tremendous change. Join us as we explore how we can connect our globally positioned future with our wandering past. Each year, the entire 7th grade class competes for the glory of winning Trope Idol, Beth El's annual Torah chanting competition. This is a live one hour show in which teams of contestants, in front of a live audience and a panel of judges, show off the entries they've prepared in the Performance, Edible Trope, Traditional and Tower of Trope categories. If you've never seen Torah chanting done with acrobatics, rap and large quantities of frosting, you don't want to miss Trope Idol! Join on a leisurely Shabbat walk where we will explore Jewish poetry. Taste nicely aged Italian wines and spend time with friends. No wine tasting experience necessary. Children ages 5 9 will enjoy dinner with Kee Tov counselors, and then head out to the field for games and other activities. Tots age 2 4 yrs welcome w/parent. Counselors will be on duty until 11pm as "shmira" (guards) after you put children to bed. Shmira will be stationed by the 300 and 400 cabins and will get you if your children wake up. Beth El s youth group for our 4 th, 5 th and 6 th graders. Ruach participants will have a parallel schedule, enabling them to have a unique camp experience. Everyone is encouraged to sign up for our Saturday evening talent show! Sign up will be in the Dining Hall; make sure to sign up by the end of dinner on Saturday night! Deb Massey and Isaac Zones Meditation T fillah Using song and meditation, enter in Shabbat worship in a peaceful and joyful space. M'nucha (Rest Hour) Shabbat necessitates rest and rejuvenation and this is the perfect time for it! You may choose to rest in or outside of your cabin, as long as all children are supervised by a parent. Please keep the atmosphere quiet so that everyone can rest. No counselors will be on duty. Shabbat T'fillah Celebrate Shabbat with song, stories and prayer. 4

5 Name Bio Peretz Wolf is the Senior Educator of Lehrhaus Judaica. From 1975 to 1985 he was actively involved in informal education (UAHC Camp Swig) and in the creation of Jewish scribal art (ketubbot and posters). From 1985 to 1990 he attended the Hebrew Union College Jewish Institute of Religion, receiving his MAHL and Rabbinic Ordination. From 1990 to 2010 he served Congregation Emanu El of San Francisco as Rabbi and Educator, and in 2002, he was awarded the Covenant Award as An Exceptional Jewish Educator who has had a significant impact on others, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the transmission of Jewish knowledge, values, and identity. At Lehrhaus since 2010, he is engaged in community education for the Bay Area, focusing on conferences, retreats, tours, the Bay Area Community Talmud Circle, and Heschel s Playlist. Rabbi was a rabbi in San Francisco at congregations Shaar Zahav and Beth Sholom, and worked for several years at Berkeley Hillel. She has led trips for AJWS to Central and South America and Africa and is active in the Progressive Jewish Alliance/Jewish Funds for Justice. Last year, She taught classes throughout the Bay area, including Kevah groups, the Marin Communities of Learning, and the Merkavah Torah Institute. She has taught on a broad range of topics from studying the Talmud, the Book of Jeremiah to "Is it kosher: questions about food, money and sex". 5
