Daniel 11 Frm ur study last week, we fund Daniel receiving a lng, detailed prphecy cncerning the final kings f Persia and mst ntably f the Greek Empire The prphecies cvered multiple generatins f leaders in bth kingdms In fact, when we include the earlier prphecies Daniel received, we find a relatively cmplete verview f the first three kingdms f the Age f Gentiles We knw hw the age starts with Nebuchadnezzar and hw it mves thrugh a ttal f fur Gentile empires Each f these fur kingdms takes its turn at ppressing Gd s peple in Israel Until such time as the Lrd is ready t set up His kingdm and free Israel frm Gentile ppressin And last week we learned briefly abut 4 f the Persian kings But quickly the angel Gabriel mved int an in-depth lk at tw kingdms cming ut f the Alexandrian empire Daniel received incredibly precise and detailed prphecy abut the Nrth and Suth kingdms We saw hw the Nrth was the Seleucid Empire and the Suth was the Ptlemaic empire The prphecies cncerning these kingdms ran frm vs.5-20, and cvered a span f several hundred years During that time, the nrth and suth warred almst cntinually And their battlefield fr the mst part was Israel Their cnflicts served t accmplish the trampling f Jerusalem that Gd intended While the histry f the Seleucid and Ptlemaic kingdms was interesting, its principle value t us is three-fld First, the incredible accuracy f these predictins gives us cmplete assurance that Daniel received this knwledge frm Gd 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Daniel 11 2 f 22 It means we can take the rest f his prphecy with the same assurance Much f what Daniel recrded has yet t cme t pass S we must lk t his wrds with as much certainty cncerning the future as we d the past Secndly, we see hw the Lrd cntrls these kings and kingdms like pieces n a chess bard s as t accmplish His plan fr Israel Remember, the Lrd numbered the kingdms in the Age f the Gentiles But mre than that, He als explains why they must d as they d, indicating they are mving accrding t a plan In ther wrds, the rise and fall f these empires isn t merely happenstance It was accrding t Gd s desires, Similarly, the age will end n a specific day Gd has determined by the return f His Sn S bth degree f detail fund in these prphecies and the curse f every event fits int Gd s plan demnstrates the reach f Gd s svereignty We simply can t read a chapter like Daniel 11 withut acknwledging that all histry lies in Gd s cntrl He s nt a dispassinate bserver f human behavir He s in cntrl and leading the wrld t the place He desires it will g S as we ended in v.20 last week, we had reached the pint where the Seleucid empire s king had been pisned by a dislyal Jewish tax cllectr As Antichus III dies, his sn Antichus IV rises t pwer Antichus IV becmes a fcal pint in Gabriel s message t Daniel and the subject f Daniel s prphecy frm v.21 t v.35 Yu may remember this man frm ur study f chapter Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Daniel 11 3 f 22 In chapter 8, Daniel saw a visin smewhat similar t the visin he saw in chapter 7 r animals and hrns In chapter 8 he saw a gat with fur hrns, fllwed by a small hrn that grew strnger than the rest This small hrn invades the Beautiful land, Israel That small hrn was Antichus IV He was called a small hrn because he serves as a type fr anther terrible leader f the future That future leader will be the antichrist, wh himself was represented by anther small hrn in chapter 7 S we have tw rulers, ne near term t Daniel (Antichus IV) and ne far term (antichrist) Bth are symblized in chapters f Daniel as little hrns The earlier ne is a type f the later ne Nw in chapter 11 we will find yet anther prphecy abut Antichus and the antichrist And nce again, Antichus will serve as a type r frerunner t the antichrist Remember, types in scripture are always lessrs t their greater fulfillment That is, Antichus IV will say and d things that are similar t the things the antichrist will eventually say and d But the magnitude and effect, the wrk f the antichrist will be far greater than that f Antichus IV Let s lk at what we learn abut Antichus IV Dan. 11:21 In his place a despicable persn will arise, n whm the hnr f kingship has nt been cnferred, but he will cme in a time f tranquility and seize the kingdm by intrigue. Dan. 11:22 The verflwing frces will be flded away befre him and shattered, and als the prince f the cvenant. Dan. 11:23 After an alliance is made with him he will practice deceptin, and he will g up and gain pwer with a small frce f peple Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Daniel 11 4 f 22 Dan. 11:24 In a time f tranquility he will enter the richest parts f the realm, and he will accmplish what his fathers never did, nr his ancestrs; he will distribute plunder, bty and pssessins amng them, and he will devise his schemes against strnghlds, but nly fr a time. Dan. 11:25 He will stir up his strength and curage against the king f the Suth with a large army; s the king f the Suth will mbilize an extremely large and mighty army fr war; but he will nt stand, fr schemes will be devised against him. Dan. 11:26 Thse wh eat his chice fd will destry him, and his army will verflw, but many will fall dwn slain. Dan. 11:27 As fr bth kings, their hearts will be intent n evil, and they will speak lies t each ther at the same table; but it will nt succeed, fr the end is still t cme at the appinted time. Dan. 11:28 Then he will return t his land with much plunder; but his heart will be set against the hly cvenant, and he will take actin and then return t his wn land. The passage begins with In his place... speaking f the murdered king, Seleucus IV Philpater In his place cmes a man wh is a truly evil persn Gabriel says he will be despicable, which means smene wh is despised He will be despised by the Jewish peple fr his cruelty In fact, it s likely this man shares anther, key quality with the cming antichrist He was almst certainly indwelled by a demn, and perhaps by Satan himself fr reasns I ll explain later Antichus IV was nt rightful the heir f Seleucus IV Philpater He was able t seize cntrl f the thrne because Seleucus IV Philpater s ldest sn was being held captive in Rme After cnvincing the leaders f Syria t allw him t rule in place f the captive sn, Antichus IV quickly cnslidated pwer In v.21 we see his illegitimate rise t pwer described He was a ruthless man As we learned in chapter 8, Antichus IV declared that he was a gd in the frm f man 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Daniel 11 5 f 22 He tk the name Antichus Epiphanies, which means a manifestatin f Gd But he was prne t unpredictable and strange behavir This led his subjects t calling him Antichus Epimanes, which means madman Further evidence that he was likely demn pssessed The statements in vs are an verview f the passage that fllws We re tld this king will push aside an verflwing frce He will als depse a prince f a cvenant And he will gain pwer ver his adversary with a minimum f frces because he relies n deceptin It begins in v.24 as Antichus cllects riches frm amng the vassals f his kingdm He desn t use these riches fr himself Instead, he uses them t buy allegiances in preparatin fr war against the Ptlemaic Kingdm In this way, he will achieve a victry his father s never achieved, namely invading the heart f the Ptlemaic Kingdm Antichus IV s campaign against Egypt began in 170 BC, when he marched a large army suthward int the Nile Delta withut detectin Ptlemy VI respnded sending a much larger army t ppse Antichus But as we read in v.23, Antichus was able t defeat Ptlemy VI s frces with his smaller frce Antichus IV managed t capture the Egyptian city f Memphis As v.25 reprts, Antichus succeeded in part thrugh deceptin The deceptin came in tw ways as described in v.26 and v.27 In v.26 we learn that tw f the king s cunselrs wh shared his table deceived him These tw cunselrs wanted t undermine the yung king and replace him 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Daniel 11 6 f 22 S they cnvinced Ptlemy IV t make bad military decisins leading t his defeat and the lss f many lives The secnd deceptin came when Ptlemy IV and Antichus IV sat dwn t negtiate a peace as described in v.27 Antichus had Memphis but culd nt capture the key Egyptian city f Alexandria S Antichus tld Ptlemy IV that if he surrendered Alexandria then Antichus wuld allw Ptlemy t cntinue ruling Meanwhile, Ptlemy agreed t let Antichus have the city and vwed lyalty t Antichus but he was lying t These were all lies, f curse as we read in v.27 Antichus IV kept Ptlemy prisner under guard while he attacked the city And despite Ptlemy s assurances, the city f Alexandrian did nt surrender When Antichus tried t take the city, the inhabitants fught back and named Ptlemy IV s yunger brther king instead Antichus eventually left fr hme, his battles ver Egypt awaiting anther day Finally, in v.28 we re tld Antichus IV returns t Syria with much plunder taken frm Memphis Alng the way he passes thrugh Israel again While he s in twn, a Jew named Jasn decided t take pprtunity fr his ambitin Jasn desired t be made High Priest f Israel, s he bribed Antichus IV t install him in place f the real High Priest, Onias III Seeing Jasn s success, a third man, Menelaus, als bribed Antichus IV t be made High Priest Always a ne fr persnal gain, Antichus agreed t install Menelaus ver Jasn 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Daniel 11 7 f 22 Later Onias III prtests against these mves and Jews begin t align their supprt behind ne man r the ther Eventually Antichus nw back in Syria tires f the plitical maneuvering within Israel S he has Onias III killed alng with thse wh schemed with the varius men He then decides t pursue a vendetta against the Jewish peple in the city f Jerusalem His army entered the city in 168 BC and killed 80,000 Jews and desecrated the temple Befre we mve int the rest f Antichus IV s stry, we can already see sme parallels t the cming antichrist We learned in study f chapters 8 & 9, that the antichrist will rise t pwer ver a perid f time He initially cmes t pwer amidst 10 ther wrld rulers During thse early years, he gains pwer thrugh intrigue and military victries, leading three kings t cnspire against him Eventually he dies as a result f their treachery but he cmes back t life again with greater pwer t deceive the wrld After gaining pwer at the middle f Tribulatin, he turns his attentin t persecuting the Jewish peple especially in Jerusalem This brad arch is freshadwed in the events f Antichus life He acts in similar ways thugh n a smaller scale in keeping with being a frerunner But Antichus IV s similarities t the antichrist nly grw Dan. 11:29 At the appinted time he will return and cme int the Suth, but this last time it will nt turn ut the way it did befre. Dan. 11:30 Fr ships f Kittim will cme against him; therefre he will be disheartened and will return and becme enraged at the hly cvenant and take actin; s he will cme back and shw regard fr thse wh frsake the hly cvenant. Dan. 11:31 Frces frm him will arise, desecrate the sanctuary frtress, and d away with the regular sacrifice. And they will set up the abminatin f deslatin Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Daniel 11 8 f 22 Back in v.27 Gabriel tld Daniel that this king wuldn t prevail against his enemy in the suth until the appinted time, and nw v.29 that time has cme In the same year that Antichus rampaged Jerusalem he als decided t cntinue suthward t attack Egypt again Upn his arrival, he discvers the Rman cnsul Ppillius Laenas had sailed frm Cyprus t secure the territry fr Rme In v.30 we re tld that ships frm Kittim will bring this army t Egypt Cyprus is the mdern name f Kittim Faced with a superir army, Antichus IV had n chice but t return hme Antichus was prevented frm entering Egypt as he had hped as v.29 reprts His return trip tk him nce again thrugh Israel As v.30 explains, he s enraged by his lss t Rme and s he decides t take the lss ut against the Jewish peple The reference t hly cvenant is always a reference t the Old Cvenant by which the Jews received the Law and the temple service Oppsing against this cvenant meant ppsing the practice f the law and temple service Similarly, Antichus IV shwed favr fr any Jew wh wuld likewise ppse practice f the Msaic Law T stp the Jews frm practicing the Law, the king used deceptin t gain entry int the city with his frce f 22,000 men Once inside the city walls, he attacked the Jews n a Sabbath when they were reluctant t fight back His general, Apllnius killed many in the city and tk many Jews captive as slaves He plundered the temple f its gld and set the city n fire Antichus set his mind n exterminating the Jewish peple and ending Jewish religius practice frever 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Daniel 11 9 f 22 S in additin t the destructin dne by his general, Antichus banned the Msaic Law including temple service and the feasts He burned all cpies f the Law that he culd find He set up a statue f Zeus, his gd, inside the temple alng with an altar where he made burnt fferings And fr gd measure, he sacrificed a pig n the Jewish altar and demanded that Jews cntinue t sacrifice swine there n Antichus IV s birthday Pig bld in the temple prevented the Jews frm using the temple until such time that it had been prperly cleansed As we learned in chapter 8, this event was s ignminius that it was given a name: the abminatin f deslatin as mentined in v.31 the abminatin refers t all the steps Antichus tk t desecrate the temple in December 168 BC Here we find a very specific parallel t the antichrist f Tribulatin In Matthew 24 Jesus warned Matt. 24:15 Therefre when yu see the abminatin f deslatin which was spken f thrugh Daniel the prphet, standing in the hly place (let the reader understand), Matt. 24:16 then thse wh are in Judea must flee t the muntains. Matt. 24:17 Whever is n the husetp must nt g dwn t get the things ut that are in his huse. Matt. 24:18 Whever is in the field must nt turn back t get his clak. Matt. 24:19 But we t thse wh are pregnant and t thse wh are nursing babies in thse days! Matt. 24:20 But pray that yur flight will nt be in the winter, r n a Sabbath. Matt. 24:21 Fr then there will be a great tribulatin, such as has nt ccurred since the beginning f the wrld until nw, nr ever will. Jesus spke these wrds after Antichus IV lived Since Jesus was speaking abut a future time, clearly He was talking abut a different event Yet Jesus specifically referred back t Daniel 9 where the antichrist is described 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Daniel f 22 S we re seeing in Jesus wrds cnfirmatin that the accunt f Antichus is a picture r type f smething greater yet t cme In fact, Jesus adds the wrd let the reader understand t emphasize that a deeper understanding is required That deeper understanding is knwing that Antichus iv pictures the antichrist Based n prir chapters f Daniel alng with Chapter 11, we see that picture cming tgether In Daniel 9 we learned that the antichrist will make a cvenant with the peple f Israel t allw them t restart sacrifices in their temple But at the midpint f Tribulatin, the antichrist will stp the sacrifice and grain ffering Then he will set up a anther abminatin f deslatin in the temple Revelatin 13 gives us a hint f what that future abminatin will be: Rev. 13:14 And he deceives thse wh dwell n the earth because f the signs which it was given him t perfrm in the presence f the beast, telling thse wh dwell n the earth t make an image t the beast wh had the wund f the swrd and has cme t life. Rev. 13:15 And it was given t him t give breath t the image f the beast, s that the image f the beast wuld even speak and cause as many as d nt wrship the image f the beast t be killed. The antichrist will be supprted by a false prphet wh will deceive the wrld int wrshipping the antichrist as gd T facilitate the wrld s wrship, the false prphet will set up an image f the antichrist in the temple This image will have supernatural pwer t speak, which nly inspires the wrld s awe and devtin all the mre Clearly, Antichus IV pictures these events He enters Jerusalem and puts an end t the Law s that he can supplant wrship f Yahweh with his wn system 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Daniel f 22 And Antichus IV set up an image in the temple, just as Jesus frewarned wuld be the calling card f the future antichrist as well And the parallels cntinue Dan. 11:32 By smth wrds he will turn t gdlessness thse wh act wickedly tward the cvenant, but the peple wh knw their Gd will display strength and take actin. Dan. 11:33 Thse wh have insight amng the peple will give understanding t the many; yet they will fall by swrd and by flame, by captivity and by plunder fr many days. Dan. 11:34 Nw when they fall they will be granted a little help, and many will jin with them in hypcrisy. Dan. 11:35 Sme f thse wh have insight will fall, in rder t refine, purge and make them pure until the end time; because it is still t cme at the appinted time. Antichus cnvinced many faithless Jews t participate in Zeus wrship He was expert at pitting varius Jewish factins against ne anther in rder t gain what he wanted He first gained the defectin f the prgressive elements f Israel wh were already apstate and were quick t bey his demands Once he had their lyalty, Antichus IV turned t the cnservative elements in Jewish sciety He ffered t help them rt ut the prgressives elements within Israel if they pledged their lyalty t him The cnservative Jews were s threatened by the prgressives that they agreed t Antichus IV They adpted the view that the enemy f my enemy is my friend S in the end Antichus was able t take bth grups int idlatry thrugh his manipulatin Because f Antichus IV s atrcities, a Jewish revlt brke ut, as v.32 alludes A priest names Mattathias and his sns rse up in Ephraim and lead an army f cnservative Jews against Antichus IV Eventually, the mvement pushed the Seleucids ut f Israel altgether 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Daniel f 22 In the battle, Antichus IV s general, Apllnius was killed Interestingly, the Maccabean revlt didn t please every Jew in Israel The apstate prgressives feared the rise f the cnservatives within Judaism S they didn t favr the revlt and didn t fight against Antichus Meanwhile, Antichus IV retaliated by killing many f thse wh had ppsed him by bth swrd and burning Thugh he inflicted great lsses upn Israel, he wasn t able t retake the land Within a few years, Antichus IV died insane in Persia, prbably the result f a lifetime indwelled by demns Eventually the success f the Maccabees wn ver all Israel The prgressives eventually united with the cnservatives And after their victry, the Maccabees funded a new cnservative Jewish kingdm In fact, the Jewish culture swung hard t the right The Msaic Law returned with far greater zealusness, which is described in v.33 Thse wh knew Gd s law began t spread its practice and understanding amng the largely apstate Jewish ppulatin Sme f thse leading this revivalist mvement later became the Pharisees f Jesus day Others became the Essenes wh wrte the Dead Sea Scrlls And many f thse wh were ppsed t the revlt in the beginning later jined in supprt f the Maccabees, which is the hypcrisy mentined in v.34 Many in Israel fell during these battles, yet it served a gdly purpse Ntice in v.35 we re tld that thse wh have insight will fall These are the gdly wh lve the Lrd and His Law Why des the Lrd allw sme wh are His t die in this way? 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Daniel f 22 Gabriel says that it must happen in rder t refine, purge and purify the rest until the end The rest refer t the rest f Israel S the death f sme f the faithful was intended t push ut apstasy in Israel It caused the apstate within Israel t cme int line with the cnservatives This purge was s pwerful that it kept Israel rthdx until the end times Over the millennia, the peple f Israel have remained largely true t their law in every generatin since that time While there have always been apstate Jews even until tday, Jewishness was frever assciated with bserving the Law Judaism has never since reverted t the widespread apstasy f past ages Here again we see a type fr the last days with the antichrist In the last days, the Jewish peple return t a state similar t the time befre Antichus The Jewish peple will have becme largely apstate Apart frm a small rthdx minrity, mst Jews tday d nt practice the Law in any meaningful way And f curse, the temple service is nt pssible tday But because f the rise f the antichrist, great war will break ut And in the midst f that cnflict, there will be martyrs As we read in Revelatin speaking f hw Satan attacks Gd s peple in the time f Tribulatin Rev. 12:17 S the dragn was enraged with the wman, and went ff t make war with the rest f her children, wh keep the cmmandments f Gd and hld t the testimny f Jesus. And then the result f this turmil in seen in Revelatin Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Daniel f 22 Rev. 6:9 When the Lamb brke the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the suls f thse wh had been slain because f the wrd f Gd, and because f the testimny which they had maintained; Rev. 6:10 and they cried ut with a lud vice, saying, Hw lng, O Lrd, hly and true, will Yu refrain frm judging and avenging ur bld n thse wh dwell n the earth? Rev. 6:11 And there was given t each f them a white rbe; and they were tld that they shuld rest fr a little while lnger, until the number f their fellw servants and their brethren wh were t be killed even as they had been, wuld be cmpleted als. These martyrs serve Gd s greater gal f purifying Israel during Tribulatin As the prphet Zechariah explains Zech. 13:8 It will cme abut in all the land, Declares the Lrd, That tw parts in it will be cut ff and perish; But the third will be left in it. Zech. 13:9 And I will bring the third part thrugh the fire, Refine them as silver is refined, And test them as gld is tested. They will call n My name, And I will answer them; I will say, They are My peple, And they will say, The Lrd is my Gd. The Tribulatin leads sme f Israel t be cut ff But thers will be refined and call upn the Lrd Furthermre, in preparatin fr this time f purging, the Lrd will prmte the rise f cnservative, rthdx Judaism in Israel In the last days, Gd will supernaturally prvke Jewish desire t fllw the Law accrding t prmises given in Malachi Mal. 4:4 Remember the law f Mses My servant, even the statutes and rdinances which I cmmanded him in Hreb fr all Israel. Mal. 4:5 Behld, I am ging t send yu Elijah the prphet befre the cming f the great and terrible day f the Lrd. Mal. 4:6 He will restre the hearts f the fathers t their children and the hearts f the children t their fathers, s that I will nt cme and smite the land with a curse Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Daniel f 22 T bring Israel back t a bservance f her Law, the Lrd will bring an appearance f Elijah the prphet As Malachi explains, Elijah will restre the hearts f the fathers t their children This means giving the mdern descendants f Israel the same heart fr Gd s law that their ancestrs had And cnversely, the hearts f the children will return t where their fathers hearts were This is a descriptin f Israel returning frm apstasy immediately befre the great and terrible day f the Lrd That s a reference t Tribulatin This is the end time Gabriel mentins in v.35 The natin f Israel was brught back int a degree f rthdxy by the actins f Antichus It required the intense evil f such a man t unite the peple f Israel in fllwing their Law That gd wrk resulted in lss f life even amng the gdly, but it als rescued Israel frm apstasy fr a time And then in the last days, a new revival will be needed And s anther terrible despicable man will be required The Lrd will permit the rise f the antichrist s He may use this ne t bring Israel back int the bnd f the cvenant As we read in Daniel 9 earlier And nw in chapter 11, we transitin t the far term prphecy cncerning the ne Antichus pictures, the antichrist himself Dan. 11:36 Then the king will d as he pleases, and he will exalt and magnify himself abve every gd and will speak mnstrus things against the Gd f gds; and he will prsper until the indignatin is finished, fr that which is decreed will be dne. Dan. 11:37 He will shw n regard fr the gds f his fathers r fr the desire f wmen, nr will he shw regard fr any ther gd; fr he will magnify himself abve them all. Dan. 11:38 But instead he will hnr a gd f frtresses, a gd whm his fathers did nt knw; he will hnr him with gld, silver, cstly stnes and treasures Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Daniel f 22 Dan. 11:39 He will take actin against the strngest f frtresses with the help f a freign gd; he will give great hnr t thse wh acknwledge him and will cause them t rule ver the many, and will parcel ut land fr a price. This passage sunds at first as if we re still talking abut Antichus In fact the narrative is s subtle that it s easy t miss the break One clue that we ve mved t events f the last days is fund in the final mentin f an appinted time in v.35 That reference is a clue that we ve jumped ahead in time starting in v.36 Furthermre, the cntext f this passage makes it clear that we re talking abut smene else The events f this passage have n parallel in histry s they must still be future That s ur secnd clue that we have transitined t the ne Antichus IV pictures: the antichrist We re lking int the final f the 70 sevens frm Daniel 9 This future king will d as he pleases in a future day, meaning n ne will challenge his pwer In particular, he will magnify himself abve every gd everywhere We knw that Antichus called himself a manifestatin f a gd but he still acknwledged ther gds as well In particular, we nted earlier he wrshipped and sacrificed t Zeus And we knw that Antichus culdn t d everything he pleased, especially where Rme was cncerned But this king will declare there is n ther gd abve himself And in the prcess he will speak mnstrus things against the true Gd As he des these things, he will prsper but nly until the indignatin is finished 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Daniel f 22 The indignatin refers t the state f suffering fr Israel during this time This perid f judgment fr Israel has been decreed and must be accmplished Then in v.37 we find that this man will have n regard fr any gd wrshipped by his fathers which means his predecessrs S he will nt have a religius past He will nt be an avwed fllwer f any religin himself Instead, he will assume the rle f icn This is the mment at the middle f Tribulatin we discussed earlier when the antichrist is resurrected by the pwer f Satan Frm that pint frward, he declared himself t be gd and the wrld will believe it based n his miraculus resurrectin He will als have n desire fr wmen This line has intrigued many Bible students and led t sme unhelpful speculatin It simply means this man will shw n interest in nrmal human sexual relatinships The reasn has nthing t d with his sexual preference but rather it s essential t his claims t being a messiah Gd has n need fr a human sexual relatinship Jesus had n interest in wmen, s the antichrist cunterfeits this quality f the Messiah He frges rmantic interests t prject himself as a Messiah Then in v.38 Gabriel says this man will hnr a gd f frtresses, a gd his fathers didn t knw I believe this gd is the same ne called a freign gd again in v. 39 This gd is hnred by the antichrist s reign and rule Even as the antichrist calls himself gd, he likewise reflects glry upn a strange gd wh wasn t wrshipped in the same way befre 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Daniel f 22 This relatinship sunds similar t the relatinship between Jesus and the Father Jesus Christ is the name abve all names He is Gd And yet He als hnrs Gd the Father S here again, the antichrist cntinues t cunterfeit Christ As we learned in ur earlier lessns, the antichrist will be resurrected at the midpint f Tribulatin by the pwer f Satan Rev. 13:2 And the beast which I saw was like a lepard, and his feet were like thse f a bear, and his muth like the muth f a lin. And the dragn gave him his pwer and his thrne and great authrity. Rev. 13:3 I saw ne f his heads as if it had been slain, and his fatal wund was healed. And the whle earth was amazed and fllwed after the beast; Rev. 13:4 they wrshiped the dragn because he gave his authrity t the beast; and they wrshiped the beast, saying, Wh is like the beast, and wh is able t wage war with him? The beast here is the antichrist, and the dragn is the serpent f ld, Satan Ntice that Satan gives his pwer t the antichrist And then after the antichrist is resurrected, the antichrist causes the wrld t wrship bth the dragn and himself Here we see a cunterfeit Trinity emerging in the time f Tribulatin The antichrist seeks t be a messiah and Satan is his freign gd wh is wrshipped because f the false messiah The nly Persn missing is the Hly Spirit, and the false prphet and his freakish speaking image serves that purpse Then in v.39 we re tld that this king will shw hnr t thse wh hnr him He will parcel ur land fr a price, cntrlling cmmerce and the ability t prduce fd Revelatin cnfirms this behavir in the antichrist f end times 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Daniel f 22 Rev. 13:15 And it was given t him t give breath t the image f the beast, s that the image f the beast wuld even speak and cause as many as d nt wrship the image f the beast t be killed. Rev. 13:16 And he causes all, the small and the great, and the rich and the pr, and the free men and the slaves, t be given a mark n their right hand r n their frehead, Rev. 13:17 and he prvides that n ne will be able t buy r t sell, except the ne wh has the mark, either the name f the beast r the number f his name. The antichrist will cntrl cmmerce with a mark that he assigns t all humanity Only thse wh take the mark can buy and sell, the parceling ut f land fr a price And thse wh fail t take the mark are beheaded accrding t Revelatin 20 Finally, Gabriel describes hw this man cmes t his end Dan. 11:40 At the end time the king f the Suth will cllide with him, and the king f the Nrth will strm against him with charits, with hrsemen and with many ships; and he will enter cuntries, verflw them and pass thrugh. Dan. 11:41 He will als enter the Beautiful Land, and many cuntries will fall; but these will be rescued ut f his hand: Edm, Mab and the fremst f the sns f Ammn. Dan. 11:42 Then he will stretch ut his hand against ther cuntries, and the land f Egypt will nt escape. Dan. 11:43 But he will gain cntrl ver the hidden treasures f gld and silver and ver all the precius things f Egypt; and Libyans and Ethipians will fllw at his heels. Dan. 11:44 But rumrs frm the East and frm the Nrth will disturb him, and he will g frth with great wrath t destry and annihilate many. Dan. 11:45 He will pitch the tents f his ryal pavilin between the seas and the beautiful Hly Muntain; yet he will cme t his end, and n ne will help him. Similar t Antichus IV, the antichrist will fight neighbrs Ntice hwever that this king is fighting bth suth and nrth, which means again this can t be Antichus IV fr he didn t fight himself The mst likely explanatin is that these pwers are the three hrns that the antichrist uprts after his resurrectin These kings tried t kill the antichrist at the midpint f Tribulatin 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Daniel f 22 S after he s resurrected, the antichrist seeks revenge by attacking these kings Accrding t Gabriel, the antichrist will succeed in mving thrugh these natins and subduing all f them, just as we learned in Daniel 7 And als like Antichus IV, the antichrist will make a special pint f invading Israel, the Beautiful Land Just as Antichus tried t destry the Jewish peple, s will the antichrist place special emphasis n eliminating Israel The enemy s fcus n destrying Israel is directly related t Israel s rle in Christ s Secnd Cming As Daniel s prphecies have taught us, the Messiah returns t put an end t Gentile rule and t set up a Jewish kingdm But what if there are n Jews left? What if the enemy has succeeded in wiping ut the Jewish natin? Then Jesus Secnd Cming wuld be thwarted, r s Satan thinks Therefre, Satan has always made it his gal t remve the Jewish peple frm the earth He has been wrking thrugh varius means ver the millennia t end the Jewish peple And nce Satan is indwelling the antichrist, he will turn his full attentin t that gal In vs we als learn that his cnquests will fell many surrunding natins But all the natins we hear are neighbrs t Israel...why dn t we hear f ther areas n the earth Because by this time in Tribulatin, very little f the earth remain inhabited The judgments f Tribulatin have destryed mst f the earth, leaving nly the area we call the Middle East Within this small space the antichrist perates 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Daniel f 22 And he defeats his enemies in all directins except fr a few key areas These areas, all east f Israel, are spared by Gd fr the purpse f preserving a remnant f Israel Edm, Mab and Ammn all refer t land east f the Jrdan In this area, the Lrd will preserve a prtin f Israel in prtectin in the desert Calling Israel a wman and the antichrist indwelled by Satan a dragn, Revelatin 12 describes this defense f these territries Rev. 12:13 And when the dragn saw that he was thrwn dwn t the earth, he persecuted the wman wh gave birth t the male child. Rev. 12:14 But the tw wings f the great eagle were given t the wman, s that she culd fly int the wilderness t her place, where she was nurished fr a time and times and half a time, frm the presence f the serpent. Ntice Israel is held in safety in the desert fr 3.5 years, the secnd half f tribulatin They are held in a place called the sheep s pen, r btzrah Mic. 2:12 I will surely assemble all f yu, Jacb, I will surely gather the remnant f Israel. I will put them tgether like sheep in the fld; Like a flck in the midst f its pasture They will be nisy with men. This place is in present day Jrdan, s the Lrd will spare these places frm the antichrist t prtect the remnant f Israel Finally like Antichus IV, the antichrist will plunder many yet in the end he will be defeated in battle In v.44 we re tld that the antichrist will be drawn int battle with rumrs frm the East and Nrth These rumrs draw him and his allies int battle against Jerusalem and the last frtress f Jews in the city Unlike the Jews held in safety in Btzrah, these Jews are unbelieving yet rthdx 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Daniel f 22 It s these last remaining Jews wh must call ut fr the Lrd t bring abut His return T prevent that utcme, the antichrist camps his army west f Jerusalem, between the hly muntain and the great sea He will attack the city n the western side There he meets his end as a result f Christ s Secnd Cming Christ cmes thrugh the east gate f the city, leads the ppulatin ut f the city t safety Then he fights the antichrist and destrys him Our study tnight desn t permit me time t walk yu thrugh the entire battle that takes place at this pint Our Revelatin Bible study will fill in thse gaps But fr nw it s enugh t knw that Gabriel fretells the end f the antichrist in the battle fr Jerusalem Fr as we learned, the antichrist s death is the last act f the Age f Gentiles 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.
