With regards to law and legal issues, a lot can be said about this one verse 2/22/ of 7
1. sceptre is about authority 2. lawgiver is about when a contract/covenant is formed 3. foot (regal) symbolizes regalia, royalty i.e. stuff of kings 4. Shiloh is an epithet about the Messiah But I want to focus on the prophetic nature of this verse. In this verse Jacob is giving a prophecy that did not happen until well after Jacob s death. Therefore it s important to identify it s beginning. This seems fairly obvious to me about when it starts which will be with King David. This verse also says until Shiloh come which would indicate this prophecy has an end. This also seems obvious that it was the work of Yeshua. I say it s obvious to me because I claim the salvific work of Yeshua. In summary, this prophecy has a beginning AND an end. Going forward, I would like to map this out in a timeline and then ask some (hopefully) provocative questions. Exploration What is the significance of this verse as it relates to being a sovereign, specifically to the House of Israel and the salvific work of Shilo / Messiah. My passion is law, and being a sovereign is paramount to this topic. Before going any farther let me define that word and give some commentary. Sovereign Defined 1 A chief ruler with supreme power; one possessing sovereignty. (q. v.) It is also applied to a king or other magistrate with limited powers. 2 In the United States the sovereignty resides in the body of the people. Vide Rutherf. Inst source: Bouvier s 1856 Law dictionary Commentary Bouvier s was the legal dictionary used by the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) which recognizes the legal status of a sovereign under the law form established in America (see Declaration of Independence, CGUR) A king and a Sovereign can be thought of as being the same in that a King performs the function of a sovereign. A king has subjects that he is suppose to act righteous towards and look out for their welfare (chief among them blessing s and protection) If you have a King ruling over you, you are not the sovereign, he is. If you give up possession of sovereignty to someone else that person is now the sovereign. It s yours to loose and if you care about remaining the sovereign, then you need to take steps to keep that from happening. see #2 Goal of this article To be a sovereign is the destiny of Israel, so I want to try to convince you how to be a sovereign according to Torah, i.e. the power and authority of Torah. Investigate the legal ramifications of the 1st coming of Messiah and to consider strongly that this is what our focus should be. What I mean is, have we done all the things that we should be doing right now. Have we, who have identified as the House of Israel, fully leveraged and taken advantage of our destiny and the authority in his first coming. 2/22/ of 7
Timeline 1. YHVH prophecies to Jacob kings shall come out of thy loins ; see Gen 35:10-11 # The Shiloh prophecy is given Gen 49:10 3. YHVH shall be the FIRST King of Israel YHVH shall reign (malak H4427) for ever and ever. Exo 15:18 4. Israel enters into a sacred contract with YHVH at Mt. Sinai. Exo Before the covenant is complete there was the Golden Calf rebellion and the tribe of Levi takes the authority of being the first born. Effectively becoming the Sovereign vis-a-vis the rest of the tribes of Israel. 6. The generation that made the Exodus from Egypt and where 20 years old or older were judged by YHVH as the wicked generation and stayed in the desert until all died save two Joshua and Caleb. Effectively they received a Bill of Divorce. 7. The next generation who were not judged received a renewed covenant from YHVH see Deu 6 as servants of YHVH, they retained the legal status of Sovereign vis-a-vis the world (at least the land of Canaan) And he (YHVH) was king (melech) in Jeshurun, when the heads of the people and the tribes of Israel were gathered together. Deu 33:5 see Deu-33-and-34 # A lot of history happens but eventually Israel requests a New Deal with YHVH in that they ask for a king like the Canaanites 1st Samuel chapter 8 Note, Shaul is the SECOND king of Israel. It could be said that Shaul is the First King patterned after 1 Samuel Chapter 8 At this crucial point, the individuals of Israel are not the sovereigns. This NEW DEAL replaced (or greatly modified) the covenant with YHVH 9. A lot more history happens and bad behavior causes the House of Israel to slip into idolatry 10. YHVH hates Idolatry as a result God gives a Bill of Divorce given ONLY to the House of Israel Get over it! you can look it up, it s in the Bible and everything! see Hos 1 and Jer Israel is now divided into two houses, House of Judah and House of Ephraim (aka Israel) 12. Even though the House of Israel is divorced, YHVH makes a promise to restore them Jer 31:31-35 especially Jer 31: Yeshua stated twice that he has come but for the Lost Sheep of the House of Israel. re the Timeline, consider these thoughts 1. The House of Israel (along with Judah) was in covenant with YHVH and therefore retained the legal status of being a sovereign. 2. The House of Israel was given a Bill of Divorce therefore losing their sovereign legal status. 3. The authority and legal status was renewed to those from the House of Israel who have accepted the salvific work of Yeshua which took away the Bill of Divorce. 2/22/ of 7
4. Question. Where in the timeline to these people resort to. What s the legal status of Judah? 1. If Ephramites fully exploited their sovereignty, could it be that that is what provokes Judah to jealousy? 1st coming of Messiah All of this timeline is within the first coming of the Messiah (according to Christians). 1. How does this relate to each of the two Houses 2. Final Thoughts Riddle. Q. How can you be both a sovereign and servant at the same time? A. The key is to understand that there are two jurisdictions the heavenly realm and the earthly realm. Irony Torah defines what a sovereign is which is the role of a King and which is the destiny of Israel (a kingdom of priests). The only way the House of Israel, who was cast out by YHVH, and given the Bill of Divorce and who was saved by Yeshua is to become a servant of Yeshua. Q. What about King David? A. instead of yearning for a earthly righteous king to by your sovereign, why not yearn to be a righteous sovereign and leave the kingly business to your heavenly King YHVH? Review Q. How does a sovereignty answer this question Who is the first King of Israel? The renewed covenant with Judah In the key verses in Jer 31 that I have relied on (verse 33-35) I emphasized the point that it says only the House of Israel NOT Judah. ToDo A discussion of this is definitely warranted, but beyond the scope of this article. End Notes Verse references Jer 31: relates to BOTH houses 31. Behold, the days come, saith YHVH, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: 32. Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith YHVH: 2/22/ of 7
Jer 31: relates to ONLY the House of Israel 33. But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith YHVH, I will put my law ( ) in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34. And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know YHVH: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith YHVH: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. Gen 35:11 - El Shadai, Kings shall come out of thy Loins 11 And God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins; Isa 33:22 For YHVH is our judge ( H8199 our judge,), YHVH is our lawgiver, YHVH is our king ( מלכ H4428 our king;) ; he will save us ( H3467 will save). John 4:22 - for salvation is of the Jews Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. Joh 4:22 More Questions 1. Torah law form is the contract/covenant given by YHVH at Mt. Sinai to Israel. When they accepted this contract/covenant the Torah was formed. A major maxim of mine is that there is 2/22/ of 7
nothing more powerful than your right to contract. Unlimited contract belongs to the sovereign, so when the sovereign cuts a contract a law based on the contract is formed. You can t become focused unless you define your goals/mission statement. I think of a Mission Statement as more corporate where as a Goal is more individual and small steps. The Mission Statement drives the Goals. The Mission Statement of Israel is has already been defined by God and therefore fixed. It s used by business as a reality check to make sure that the goals that have been enacted or being consider can be defended by the businesses mission statement. Even though this is a worldly / secular analogy, I would say that it is a good analogy. The trick is to identify what the business of God is, if you do that then your good to go. The Goals or a corporate body are implementational details to achieve the mission Statement. My personal goals, which are very much in alignment with the aforementioned corporate mission statements and corporate goad are Mat 5:18 Other tags (key words): 1. Gen 15: covenant of the pieces {? Also YHVH telleth thee that he will make thee an house. 12 And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever. 14 I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity ב ה ע ו ת ו, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men: 15 But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee. 16 And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever. 17 According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David. Comments This still fits with the thesis for this article. Yeshua, the seed of David, King of kings, whose salvific work gave the capacity for the two houses to become echad, terminated the reign of kings established in 1Samuel chapter 8 (of which King David is a type). From the time of entering the land until Israel was ruled by earthly kings, the nation was ruled by judges. B With Saul, the Shiloh prophecy begins and it ends with Messiah almost 2000 years ago. Interesting how 40 years after his death, burial and resurrection, the Temple that being talked about here in this chapter (2Sa 7) is also destroyed (suggesting that the two have a relationship). B A Biblical judge (Hebrew: שופט shofet, pl. שופטים shoftim) was "a ruler or a military leader as well as someone who presided over legal hearings."[1] These judges appear most often in the Book of Judges, which is named after them. Kenneth Kitchen argues that following the conquest of Canaan by Joshua until the formation of the first Kingdom of Israel and Judah (ca BC), the Israelite tribes formed a loose confederation. No central government existed in this confederation; in times of crisis, the people were led by ad hoc chieftains, known as judges (shoftim).[2] see also Judges-Period-of- ISBE, article # /22/ of 7
