Unsteady? God's Word provides firm footing. No one is immune to the trials and tribulations of life. Even followers of Christ face difficult days. Wouldn t it be great to know we have a constant source of strength and encouragement to depend on, no matter how difficult life may become? Here s the good news a constant source of comfort, encouragement, strength and promise is available. God has given us His Word to help us navigate this exciting and sometimes challenging journey called life. The Bible is filled with promises that come directly from the heart of God to encourage us no matter what we might be facing. Through those promises, we can see how connected God truly wants to be to His children. God s promises reveal just how much He loves us. God never promised this life would be free from trouble, but He did promise to walk with us every step of the way. With God on our side, we can stand strong. 4 God provides all we need, and we can use His provision to meet the needs of others. We support each other through our persistent prayers. Our relationship with Christ and His bride, the church, will continue throughout eternity in the new home He has promised. Others may not seek God, but we can pray and intercede on their behalf. Our persistent and loving prayers can open doors to an encounter with Christ. Helping you move from where you are to where God wants you to be. This is your passion for your class or group. Yet helping different individuals each take their next step to grow as disciples is challenging. The Transformational Discipleship Assessment (TDA) is a quick and easy tool to help you discover how you and the members of your group are doing in eight essential areas of discipleship. The TDA provides next steps to help your group move from where you are to where God wants you to be. The assessment is online which allows each group participant to take it in the comfort and privacy of their home, office, or even on their mobile device. 6 The Point God is faithful in every circumstance. The Passage Psalm 89:1-2,5-8,15-18 The Bible Meets Life We ve all been left hanging by a failed promise. I ll always be there for you. We ll have your vehicle repaired by Friday. It won t hurt a bit. The repairman will be at your house by noon. Some broken promises can t be avoided. After all, when we make promises we don t know about traffic snarls or sudden illness. Whether the broken promise is a slight irritation like a friend forgetting to call you back or a devastating blow like a shattered marriage vow, when we experience enough broken promises we may begin to question anyone s ability to remain faithful to a promise. The good news is God never forgets or neglects His promises to us. God will always be by our side, and we can count on His unwavering love for us. Psalm 89 recounts God s faithfulness and serves as a reminder that gives hope in the most hopeless of situations. The Setting Psalm 89 is a lament. The first section of the psalm (vv. 1-37) praises God for His faithfulness and power. The psalmist recalled the covenantal promises God made to David and his descendants that David s throne would be established forever (2 Samuel 7:4-17). In the second section of the psalm (Psalm 89:38-52), the psalmist appealed to God to remember His covenantal promises and act in faithfulness to rescue the psalmist (God s anointed ruler) from his enemies. 7 What does the Bible say? Psalm 89:1-2,5-8,15-18 (HCSB) The holy ones (v. 5 In the Old Testament, holy ones is a reference to angelic beings. In the New Testament, it refers to believers, who are called saints (literally, holy ones ). Hosts (v. 8) Hosts is another term for armies. The heavenly hosts are the armies of heaven. Horn (v. 17) A horn is a symbol of power taken from the animal kingdom. In biblical poetry and apocalyptic language, horns are used to symbolize persons of power, usually kings I will sing about the Lord s faithful love forever; I will proclaim Your faithfulness to all generations with my mouth. 2 For I will declare, Faithful love is built up forever; You establish Your faithfulness in the heavens. 5 Lord, the heavens praise Your wonders Your faithfulness also in the assembly of the holy ones. 6 For who in the skies can compare with the Lord? Who among the heavenly beings is like the Lord? 7 God is greatly feared in the council of the holy ones, more awe-inspiring than all who surround Him. 8 Lord God of Hosts, who is strong like You, Lord? Your faithfulness surrounds You. 15 Happy are the people who know the joyful shout; Yahweh, they walk in the light of Your presence. 16 They rejoice in Your name all day long, and they are exalted by Your righteousness. 17 For You are their magnificent strength; by Your favor our horn is exalted. 18 Surely our shield belongs to the Lord, our king to the Holy One of Israel. 9 10 minutes STUDY THE BIBLE Psalm 89:1-2 Notes 1 I will sing about the Lord s faithful love forever; I will proclaim Your faithfulness to all generations with my mouth. 2 For I will declare, Faithful love is built up forever; You establish Your faithfulness in the heavens. ALTERNATE QUESTION: What are some everyday reminders of God s faithfulness? DISCUSS: Question 2 on page 16 of the PSG: When have you experienced the blessing of faithfulness? (Note: Answers may include faithfulness exhibited by parents, friends, and family, not just faithfulness shown by God. This question focuses on what we stand to gain when we and others remain faithful to our words and commitments.) ENHANCEMENT: Bring your group s attention to Pack Item #3, Book of Psalms poster, to give some background information about the Book of Psalms. Filled with hymns and prayers, the Book of Psalms gives us a glimpse into the struggles and faith of the early believers. READ: Ask a group member to read aloud Psalm 89:1-2. RECAP THE PSG (PAGE 16): Psalm 89 is a refreshing reminder of the greatness of our God. It also highlights the closeness of God. Knowing that God is sovereign and powerful and that He s ready to put every one of those attributes to work on our behalf should make us shout for joy. In our culture, we re bombarded with superficial relationships that are readily tossed away over seemingly insignificant conflicts and misunderstandings. But God s love for us will never end, no matter what we might do. The psalmist wrote in verse 1 that he would forever tell the world of God s faithfulness. The Hebrew word for faithfulness used in this verse is emuwnah, which means firmness, fidelity, steadfastness, steadiness. In other words, God s love will always remain strong, will always remain steady, and most importantly, will always remain. TRANSITION: The next verses exclaim how even creation itself attests to God s almighty power. 20 SESSION 1

THE POINT God is faithful in every circumstance. Psalm 89:1-2 Commentary God s faithfulness is a cause for praise. The writer of Psalm 89 is identified as Ethan the Ezrahite. Ethan was a Levite connected to the reigns of King David and King Solomon. The psalm is termed a maskil. While the exact meaning of the term is uncertain, it is thought to be related to instruction or wisdom; therefore, a maskil is a psalm of wisdom or instruction. This type of psalm was used in worship. Verse 1: God s faithfulness is a cause for praise. Line A (the first part of the verse) is spoken about the Lord. Line B (the second part of the verse, beginning with I will proclaim ) is spoken to the Lord. The key idea in line A is the Lord s faithful love. Faithful love is a two-word translation of a single Hebrew word which has no one-word equivalent in English. Sometimes it is translated loving kindness, mercies, loyal love, steadfast love, covenant love, or great love. Because the word has been paired with faithfulness in several psalms, faithful love may be the best two-word translation available to us. Since the word is plural, it can be translated acts of faithful love. God s faithful love is a ready cause for praise. In the Hebrew text, the words I will sing come at the end of line A. This placement emphasizes that the singing is in response to the Lord s faithful love. Certainly the Lord s faithful love is forever. But the forever in this verse refers to Ethan s commitment to praise the Lord forever with singing. The key idea in line B is faithfulness. Faithfulness refers specifically to acting rightly in one s relationships (trustworthiness, integrity). Everything the Lord does in relationship with people is right and just. Such awesome faithfulness is cause for praise. Not only will Ethan sing forever, he will make known the Lord s faithfulness to everyone. The use of faithful love, faithfulness, forever (or eternal), and to all generations is very similar to what is proclaimed in Psalm 100:5: For Yahweh is good, and His love is eternal; His faithfulness endures through all generations. Verse 2: The same pattern is utilized in verse 2 as was employed in verse 1. Line A speaks of the Lord s faithful love which is built up forever. Built up means that the Lord will act in faithful love forever. Line B addresses the Lord. Establish means to make secure and lasting. The Lord s faithfulness is a certainty for time and eternity. In the heavens could refer to physical creation as a whole. If that is the case, then line B describes God s faithful love as trustworthy like the sun, moon, and stars are faithful in the courses in which the Lord has placed them. More likely, heavens refers to the abode of God. Jesus called this heaven My Father s house (John 14:2). The abode of God is in a realm of existence outside our physical world. This is clearly the heavens referred to in verses 5-8. Regardless of which of these ways one interprets heavens, the Lord s building up of faithful love and establishing faithfulness in the heavens are magnificent cause for us to praise Him. BIBLE STUDIES FOR LIFE 21

10 minutes STUDY THE BIBLE Psalm 89:5-8 Notes 5 Lord, the heavens praise Your wonders Your faithfulness also in the assembly of the holy ones. READ: Ask a group member to read aloud Psalm 89:5-8. RECAP THE PSG (PAGE 17): One evening as I was driving home with my family, one of my children yelled from the back seat, Look at that moon! The moon that night was larger and significantly brighter than I had ever noticed before. It was a super moon, a rare event that occurs when the moon makes its closest approach to earth, causing it to appear as much as 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter. 1 That night, the heavens gave abundant evidence of God s handiwork and His power for all to see. SAY: Psalm 89:5-8 shows us that the universe declares God s faithfulness even as it declares His awesome power. The heavens call His people to celebrate God s glory and power; His faithful love should also be a cause of great celebration. ALTERNATE QUESTION: Creation proclaims God s faithfulness. How can our lives do the same? DISCUSS: Question 3 on page 17 of the PSG: What is the connection between God s majesty and God s faithfulness? RECAP THE PSG (PAGE 17): Even the majesty and beauty of the universe pale in comparison with God. Verses 6-7 clearly state that nothing can compare with the majesty of God. The heavens declare His faithfulness and praise Him. The angels have witnessed it and sing of Him. The world was shaped by His very hand and gives witness to His greatness. DISCUSS: Question 4 on page 18 of the PSG: When have you felt a strong sense of God s majesty and power? SAY: In everything God does, He acts with faithfulness and strength SESSION 1

THE POINT God is faithful in every circumstance. Psalm 89:5-8 Commentary God s faithfulness is celebrated in heaven. Verse 5: In verses 5 and 8, praises are directed to God. In verses 6 and 7, praises are declared about God. In verse 5, those praising God are initially identified as the heavens and secondly as the assembly of the holy ones. The heavens means those who dwell in heaven that is the cherubim, seraphim, and all other angelic beings. The phrase the assembly of the holy ones is in parallel position to the heavens. Accordingly, it also refers to angelic beings. In heaven, the angelic beings praise the Lord for His wonders. Wonders are miraculous acts of God that cause viewers to gaze in amazement. Such wonders cause even angels to be amazed. The angels also praise God for His faithfulness. The parallel placement of faithfulness and wonders provides insight into the angelic praise. The Lord uses wonders in faithfully upholding His promises. He is awesome in His faithfulness and awesome in the performance of His wondrous actions. Verse 6: This verse employs dual questions which require the same response. Obviously, there is no one in heaven (or anywhere else) who compares to the Lord. Those in the skies are the same individuals as the heavenly beings. The literal meaning of heavenly beings is sons of the mighty or sons of God. In the New Testament, sons of God refers to people who become children of God by spiritual rebirth and adoption. Christians are sons and daughters of God. But in the Old Testament, this term applies to angelic beings, who are sons of God through their creation by God (see Job 1:6; 2:1). Because no heavenly being is like Him, only the Lord is worthy of worship. Verse 7: The presence of the Lord elicits holy reverence from the most powerful of the angelic beings. In verse 5, we saw the assembly of the holy ones, which was the gathering of all the angels to worship the Lord. In this verse, the council of the holy ones refers to a smaller group of angelic beings who serve on a heavenly council or assembly over which the Lord presides. Verse 8: Like verse 5, verse 8 is addressed to God. Here the psalmist called God, LORD God of Hosts. Hosts is another term for armies. The heavenly hosts are the armies of heaven. The Lord is commander of the armies of heaven. There is no one strong enough to lead the armies of heaven other than the Lord Almighty, the Creator, Sustainer, and Judge of all the creation. The psalmist asked the Lord a rhetorical question similar to the two questions in verse 6. Certainly, there is no one strong or mighty like the Lord. Then the writer declared to the Lord that He is surrounded by faithfulness. This is most likely a reference to the faithful character of the Lord to always use His might for right. In everything He does, He acts with faithfulness and strength. BIBLE STUDIES FOR LIFE 23

10 minutes STUDY THE BIBLE Psalm 89:15-18 Notes 15 Happy are the people who know the joyful shout; Yahweh, they walk in the light of Your presence. 16 They rejoice in Your name all day long, and they are exalted by Your righteousness. 17 For You are their magnificent strength; by Your favor our horn is exalted. 18 Surely our shield belongs to the Lord, our king to the Holy One of Israel. READ: Ask a group member to read aloud Psalm 89: RECAP THE PSG (PAGE 19): Up to this point, the psalmist had declared the importance of celebrating God s love and faithfulness. But what good is talking about the love and faithfulness of God if you ve never experienced the love and faithfulness of God? In verses 15-18, we see that when we trust God s faithfulness and choose to live in His presence, we will experience great comfort and joy. When we choose to follow Him, He exalts us and imparts His righteousness to us. God did all this for us through Jesus Christ. In His faithful love, God sent Christ to forgive us, redeem us, and bring us back to Him. ALTERNATE QUESTION: What can God s followers expect because of His loving faithfulness to them? DISCUSS: Question 5 on page 19 of the PSG: How can we actively increase our trust in God? DO: Divide your members into groups of three or four people each. Within each small group, direct members to take turns sharing aloud their responses to the activity on page 18 of the PSG. Abide in Him: How can you choose to rely on God s faithfulness in the following situations? Choose one. You re preparing to make a career or life decision. You ve made a poor choice that led to sin and regret. You ve prayed for months for a specific request with no affirmative answer. SAY: As followers of Christ, we re given the great privilege of knowing His joy, walking in His presence, and being exalted by His righteousness just as He promised. 24 SESSION 1

THE POINT God is faithful in every circumstance. Psalm 89:15-18 Commentary God s faithfulness is experienced by His followers. Verse 15: Beginning in verse 15, praises flow from the people of God. They are blessed because they know the joyful shout. This would be a shout calling Israelite worshipers to come rejoice at one of the feasts. Such shouts were precursors of the great shout of the archangel when our Lord will descend from heaven at His return (1 Thessalonians 4:16 17). This may also be the shout of genuine, heartfelt worship (literally, praise the Lord ). Verse 16: The first result of a lifestyle blessed by God s gracious presence is rejoicing that lasts continually or all day long (see Philippians 4:4 7). Such rejoicing is specifically in the Lord s name. The Lord s name represents His faithful character and His trustworthy actions. All that He does is in accordance with His faithful character. Verses 15 and 16 note the following cycle: joyful worship leads to daily living in God s favor which leads to rejoicing and with it the desire to worship again with God s people. 1 The second result of a lifestyle blessed by God s gracious presence is being exalted by the Lord s righteousness. He lifts up those who please Him in their walk. This was true for the Israelites and it s still true for believers today. Verse 17: The third result of a lifestyle blessed by God s gracious presence is experiencing His glorious strength. The Lord s strength is described as magnificent, referring to the awesomeness of His glory. Our Lord s strength is transcendent, both in beauty and power. In the second half of this verse, the psalmist changes from describing the people of God in the third person ( their ) to including himself with the first person plural our. He uses our three times consecutively. The first our is used in association with the word horn, an image taken from the animal kingdom representing power. In Hebrew poetry and apocalyptic language, the word horn often symbolizes a person of power, usually a king (see Psalm 75:10). It follows that our horn means the powerful king of Israel, representative of Israel s strength. The Lord God exalts the king who serves in His favor. Verse 18: The second our is our shield. Shield is another reference to Israel s king. The king s duty was to be the defender and protector of the nation. Because their shield belongs to the Lord, it is clear that the Lord is the true defender of His people. The king was both an agent and symbol of that protection. The third use of our is in relation to our king. Belongs is understood to apply to both lines of the verse. Verses 5 through 8 mention holy ones or angelic beings. In the New Testament, there are many holy ones or believers. But there is only one Holy One of Israel. That One is the Lord God. The king belongs to Him. He is to be a great servant of the Lord. 1. John Goldingay, Psalms Volume 2: Psalms (Grand Rapids: Baker Academic, 2007), 675. BIBLE STUDIES FOR LIFE 25

5 minutes LIVE IT OUT SAY: God s faithfulness means that we can place our trust wholly in Him. Notes GUIDE: Lead group members to consider the responses to the Bible study listed on page 20 of the PSG. Note God s faithfulness. Make a list of two or three ways you ve seen God express faithfulness to His promises, His people, or His character. Keep this record and add to it as you experience God s loyalty. When you need encouragement, look back at this personal history of God s work. Practice faithfulness. The more you get to know God, the more you should reflect His ways to the world around you. Pay close attention to the commitments you make; do what it takes to keep them. Share God s faithfulness. Know someone going through difficult times? Share with them what you ve personally experienced or learned of God s unwavering faithfulness. Wrap It Up SAY: Psalm 89 declares the faithfulness of the One who knows every circumstance you ll face this week, next month, and next year. Dive deep into His Word and watch how He keeps every promise He makes there. 26 SESSION 1
