1 Third Grade Objectives ART Extends art vocabulary to include the terms: abstract, visual intelligence, proportion, wedging and scoring. Identifies the elements of line, shape, space, color and texture, the principles of repetition and pattern and the expressive qualities of mood and emotion in art prints. Makes connections between visual art and other disciplines. Studies the abstract artwork of Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, Marc Chagall and Wassily Kandinsky. Studies the life and work of Georigia O Keefe. Interprets aspects of the Biblical account of Christ s birth with drawing. Draws the outline or silhouette of a person, animal or object and shows objects getting smaller as they are farther away. Learns the relationship of drawing to eye hand coordination. BIBLE Understands that God spoke and creation began, that sin ruined this creation, and that God had a plan to restore people s relationship with Him. Studies Adam & Eve, Noah and the Tower of Babel. Understands Abram s faithful obedience to God and God s covenant with Abram and Isaac. Traces how God worked in the lives of Jacob and Joseph and used even negative events to further His plan. Recognizes the fulfillment of God s promise of a great nation as completed in the stories of Moses, the plagues, the Passover, and the Exodus. Recognizes God s guidance and revelation of Himself in the Law. Understands God s expectations for worship by studying the building of the tabernacle. Recognizes God s provision for His people and intolerance of sin during their years in the wilderness. Sees the victorious results of obedience and renewal of Covenant in the book of Joshua as the Israelites conquered and settled in Jericho and Ai. Practices corporate prayer daily. Reviews the Gospel message, emphasizing the problem of sin, Christ s death and resurrection, our need to accept what Christ did and God s promises to us. Demonstrates awareness of missions by using world maps to pray for missionaries, ministries and countries around the world. LANGUAGE ARTS Reading and Literature Recognizes characters choices as being God honoring or not. Develops a biblical worldview through which to critically analyze literature. Appreciates God s blessings of reading resources and the physical abilities to read. Understands and applies the alphabetic principle through the third letter of a list of words. Identifies consonants: single, blends, digraphs in initial, final and medial positions. Identifies vowels: short, long, digraphs, r controlled, variant and schwa. Uses plurals, verb tenses, possessives, comparatives and superlatives appropriately. Uses contractions, compound words, prefixes, suffixes and root words appropriately. 2 Identifies and determines meaning of words and sentences by applying the definitions and principles of antonyms, synonyms, homographs, homophones, multiple meaning words, context clues and content area vocabulary. Understands and identifies cause and effect with the aid of graphic organizers. Draws logical conclusions using higher order thinking skills. Monitors own comprehension. Recognizes literary devices such as rhythm, rhyme, pattern, alliteration, onomatopoeia, narration and point of view. Develops an ability to be a motivated, purposeful, and self reliant reader. Writing and Grammar Recognizes the power and authority of God s Word specifically in the creation of the world (Genesis 1), and the Word became flesh (John 1). Uses biblical truths as a foundation for understanding and expressing ideas. Understands and writes narrative, expository, fiction, non fiction and descriptive pieces. Designs paragraphs with a beginning, middle and end. Selects a focus and structure and writes a draft addressing a purpose. Uses a variety of types of sentences and sentence structures. Understands own voice and uses consistently through a piece of writing. Revises, proofreads, and polishes writing by improving word choice, coherence, voice, progression of ideas and conventions. Identifies and uses direct and indirect objects, adverbs, pronouns and contractions. Correctly spells some frequently used, irregular words. Correctly spells words containing Greek and Latin roots, suffixes and prefixes. Listening and Speaking Understands God s protection of us through the guidance of Scripture to encourage one another and build each other up (I Thessalonians 5:11). Listens effectively in both formal and informal situations. Asks questions and responds to questions from the teacher and peers in the classroom. Develops the conventions of conversation. LIBRARY Uses the online catalog to locate materials. Develops an awareness of the various genres such as mystery, adventure, fantasy, biography and realistic fiction. Evaluates various illustrators and their styles and learns the distinctions of the Caldecott Award. Accesses pre selected web sites, navigates pages and uses links to find pertinent information. Understands the purpose of a bibliography. Collects information from various sources for research. Uses simple note taking techniques. MATHEMATICS Understands place value through 100,000. Knows the terms factor, product, addend, sum, difference, dividend, quotient and divisor. Adds with carrying to 100,000. Subtracts with carrying to 1,000. 3 Adds and subtracts dollars and cents. Checks work using inverse operation. Memorizes multiplication tables for numbers Learns different strategies for multiplication. Learns several strategies to solve problems and determines the best strategy. Converts measurements to one unit. Identifies angles, geometric shapes and 3 D geometric shapes. Reads, completes and compares graphs. Determines lapse of time. Finds fractional parts of a whole number. Recognizes equivalent fractions. Computes math problems mentally using all four operations. Uses a calculator to compute with all four operations. Estimates to check work. Understands the multiplication of God s people, Israel, and the fulfillment of his promise to Abraham that they would be a great nation (Exodus 12:37, Numbers 1). Appreciates God s organization and individual care of his people (Numbers 2, Joshua 13 21). MUSIC Performs ensembles using Bible verses and proverbs (idioms). Sings on pitch in a light, head voice. Understands God created us to sing praises to Him, with excellence. Reads a melody line (the names of notes) on a treble music staff. Sings in rounds and partner songs, using balance and blend with no competition. Learns folk dances and the exercise of working as a team. Plays rhythm patterns and improvises on Orff instruments. Continues identifying instruments of the orchestra by sight and by sound within major pieces of music. Learns vocabulary terms such as promenade, swing your partner, sally down the alley, note names, folk music, spirituals, measures and time signature. PHYSICAL EDUCATION Develops an understanding of the need for warm up, exercise and cool down activities. Sets personal age appropriate health related fitness goals. Learns the rules of team sports such as soccer, kick ball, dodge ball and softball. Applies the concepts of team work and sportsmanship to games and activities. Begins to see competition, sportsmanship and teamwork through scriptural truths. All students will participate in the National Association for Sport and Physical Education tests twice a year according to grade level standards. Recognizes divine order and power in the universe (Eph 3:20 21). Understands God as faithful creator (Genesis 1, Psalm 8, Psalm 136). Identifies and distinguishes among the nine planets, moons, asteroids, comets and stars. Explains the cause of seasons and day and night. Describes the moon s phases and identifies what causes eclipses (lunar & solar). Understands that magnets have two poles and can both repel and attract. Measures the change in force between two magnets. Understands and constructs open and closed circuits and electromagnets. Recognizes God s accuracy in passing down measurement instructions for Noah s Ark (Genesis 6) and the Tabernacle (Exodus 25 28). Defines and identifies properties of matter and its forms. Uses balances and masses accurately. Uses a ruler accurately to measure, draw and compare lines to the nearest centimeter and millimeter. Reads a graduated cylinder to the closest milliliter, recognizing the meniscus. Recognizes that we are made in God s image (Genesis 1) to be creative beings, who can discover and use simple machines. Defines, identifies, and builds simple machines, including a lever, inclined plane, wheel and axle and pulley. Understands that God has commissioned people to care for his creatures (Genesis 1). Categorizes the five groups of animals with backbones (fish, amphibian, reptile, bird and mammal) and the six groups of animals without backbones (sponges, jellyfish, worms, mollusks, spiny skinned, and jointed legs). Understands that God has created animals with specific features so that they may function and survive. Understands that animals of the same species can mate and reproduce via eggs or live birth. Defines and identifies sources of energy along with its forms, uses and transformations. Understands the water cycle and the changes that occur in evaporation, condensation and precipitation. SOCIAL STUDIES Uses maps to understand Biblical stories such as Abraham s journey and the Exodus of the Israelites. Makes, interprets, and reads maps, graphs and charts (cities, legends, compass rose, coordinates). Defines and identifies landforms (plateaus, mountains, hills, valleys). Recognizes the need for missionaries around the world (Acts 1:8). Understands what communities are, the three types of communities and how they work together. Understands the Christian citizen s responsibility toward government and our citizenship in Heaven. Identifies major people, objects and events in American history (Declaration of Independence, Revolution, Constitution, Washington, Jefferson and Franklin). Diagrams and defines the three branches of U.S. government (Executive, Judicial, Legislative). Identifies our nation s capital and major government landmarks. Understands that God uses difficult situations to refine us (Job, Hebrews 12). Explains that the Jamestown settlers were the first European settlers to build a community on Powhatan land and understands the hardships they faced. Orders historical and personal events chronologically in the form of a timeline. Identifies and describes major Chicago landmarks (architectural, geographical and historical).
