2 Prince of Egypt AH-- AH-- AH-- AH-- HEBREW SLAVES DELIVER US SEND A SHEPHERD TO SHEPHERD US AND DELIVER US TO THE PROMISED LAND DELIVER US TO THE PROMISED LAND! DELIVER US! YOCHEVED SCENE 2 PROMONTORY - EIGHTEEN YEARS LATER and, now two young men, sit in their chariots on a promontory overlooking the desert and the outskirts of the city of Thebes. So... we race our chariots straight down the edge of the cliff into town. Good luck keeping up with me, brother. (looking down nervously) Uh, Moses... isn t the path down the cliff pretty... steep? Sure is. So don t go off the edge. It s a long way down. So let s see, then we go around the marketplace... (gaining confidence) It s faster to go through the center! Of course, I ll be way ahead of you by then! All right, Ramses, through the center of the marketplace - and around the Temple of Horus. (aghast) But the High Priest will be there! That s the best part - can you imagine the look on Hotep s face? Of course, if you re too scared to race... First through the royal gate wins!

3 Prince of Egypt All right, on the word dust. Dust? As in eat... my... DUST! (confused) ( lashes his horses with his whip on dust and races off. whips his horse and is off as well. They race side by side, as the sights along their route flash past.) AND WHEELS OF THE CHARIOT SPINNING BARRELING DOWN FROM THE LEDGE WE KNOW THE BEST WAY OF WINNING IS KEEPING CLOSE TO THE EDGE WHOA! - OBSTACLES COMING SO QUICKLY YOU ALWAYS ARE NARROWLY SKIRTING DISASTER THERE'S ONLY ONE THING THAT'S BETTER THAN GOING SO FAST - AND THAT'S GOING FASTER! COME ON, YOU FOOLS YOU'RE HORSES, NOT MULES! YOU'VE GOT TO GO EVEN FASTER! (They race on into the MARKETPLACE) AND THUNDERING INTO THE MARKET ON A MAGNIFICENT STEED

4 Prince of Egypt SINCE THERE IS NOWHERE TO PARK IT MIGHT AS WELL PICK UP SOME SPEED WATCHING MY BACKSIDE GET FURTHER IN FRONT OUGHT TO PROVE TO YOU I'M YOUR MASTER! I WOULD GIVE UP AND ADMIT YOU'RE IMPRESSIVELY FAST - EXCEPT THAT I M FASTER! (There s the SOUND OF NUMEROUS CRASHES from behind them. looks back.) So much for the marketplace! It s in ruins! Next target -- the temple! Maybe we ll be lucky and Hotep won t be there. I m counting on him being there! AND WE'VE GOT NO EXCUSE BUT WHY WORRY, SINCE THERE IS A RACE TO BE RUN? AFTER ALL, WHAT IS THE USE OF BEING A PRINCE - IF YOU CAN'T HAVE A LITTLE FUN!? That s right! AND WHY NOT HAVE A LITTLE FUN!? (A short distance in front of them, HIGH PRIEST HOTEP and his PRIESTS are conducting a solemn ritual. A clay figure of HORUS stands on an altar. HOTEP wraps a cloth around the figure.)

5 Prince of Egypt Moses? ( leaps onto the marble block and seizes the GUARD s whip as he raises it for another blow. The startled GUARD turns and sees looming over him. Do you dare to disobey me? (He raises his hand to strike the GUARD. The GUARD cowers and loses his balance. Screaming, the GUARD falls backwards, toppling off the marble block and crashing onto the stone below. AARON rushes to the limp, still body.) He s dead! AARON (Everyone freezes, uncertain how to react to an Egyptian prince killing a guard. Then runs off.) SCENE 12 THE EDGE OF THE DESERT has run to the edge of the temple complex. The desert stretches before him to the horizon. He stops exhausted, hands on knees. runs towards him from the construction site. Moses! What are you doing? I killed that man. I committed murder. It was an accident! I saw it. The man fell. I m responsible. Either I leave or I must be put to death.

6 Prince of Egypt Don t be ridiculous. He was just a guard, one step above a slave. Someone so far down the pyramid of ma at, we can t even see him! A prince of Egypt can t be punished for -- But I m not a prince of Egypt. What are you talking about? There s no royal blood in my veins. I was born a... a Hebrew. A slave. ( laughs.) (CONT D) Ask Father and Mother if you don t believe me. I m a Hebrew! ( recoils, as he reacts.) (in a low voice) If that s true, no one must ever know that. I can t keep it secret. Of course you can. We can. You ve had a shock. You re not thinking straight. Come back with me now. I can t run away from the truth. (He pulls his arm free from grasp.) You re running away right now! Listen to me -- I am the son of Egypt - the morning and the evening star. If I say day is night, it will be written. And I say you are innocent. I say you are my brother. I can t stay where I don t belong.

7 Prince of Egypt (NEFERTARI looks to.) Seti the Second. HOTEP In the name of Amun-Ra the Father, Horus the Son of Isis, and Kneph the Spirit of the River Nile, I name you Seti the Second, heir to the throne of the living god Pharaoh Ramses. (He scatters water from another bowl over the BABY's head.) PRIESTS AND ATTENDEES MIGHTY PHARAOH QUEEN NEFERTARI SETI THE SECOND LIFE! HEALTH! STRENGTH! LIFE! HEALTH -- (As the MAID carries the baby out of the room, a commotion erupts from the back of the room, as GUARDS shout at unseen intruders.) GUARDS (ad lib) Stand back! This is a royal celebration! You cannot enter! Halt! Stop him! ( bursts into the throne room, followed by TZIPPORAH.) I m here to see my father, the Pharaoh. ( stands up and crosses to the edge of the royal platform.) What is this? There are no strangers allowed in the throne room! ( steps forward, flanked by nervous GUARDS. TZIPPORAH follows, a short distance behind.) But I m not a stranger. ( rises, gazing in disbelief at.)

8 Prince of Egypt It can t be... Everyone said you must be dead. Moses! ( bolts from the throne and runs to. They embrace.) Ramses. It s been so long. And... you were sitting on the throne. I am Pharaoh now. Then Father... ( nods.) And Mother? (CONT D) She... She s... different than when you left, Moses. She rarely leaves her chambers. She never really recovered from Father s death. ( is silent for a moment. notices TZIPPORAH.) (CONT D) Isn t this the Midian girl who escaped? You brought her back for me, just as you said you would! Unbelievable! You kept your promise! What promise? TZIPPORAH (icily, to ) (to TZIPPORAH) It was a long time ago. (to ) Ramses, Tzipporah is my wife. HOTEP Excuse me, Your Majesty, I am compelled to remind you Pharaoh Seti banished Moses from Egypt for life. Hotep, you re still here.

9 Prince of Egypt HOTEP I will always be here, serving the gods. You, on the other hand, will soon be gone. (erupts with fury) This is my brother! He s come back from the dead, and I am going to welcome him back into my family. NEFERTARI Ramses, you can t! He pretended to be a member of your family, then ran off after killing an overseer and married a slave! TZIPPORAH I was never a slave! In fact, I m more of a princess than you are. NEFERTARI (burning) I m descended from five generations of Pharaohs! Nefertari, I think... TZIPPORAH There are ten generations of high priests in my family! There s no reason... How dare a desert savage speak to... NEFERTARI (TUYA, leaning heavily on a SERVANT s arm, walks slowly and painfully into the throne room.) TUYA Is it true? Has my Moses come back? Mother?... Mother! (uncertain at first) (HE runs to TUYA and embraces her.)

10 Prince of Egypt AARON Look, there s your brother the Pharaoh floating down the Nile! (He points to the royal barge floating down on the Nile, with and the other royals on board.) AARON (CONT D) Go join your family on the royal barge! HEBREWS YOU RE NOT ONE OF US! SCENE 25 THE BANKS OF THE NILE runs towards the bank of the river. Ramses! TZIPPORAH Moses, no! Why are you doing this? Ramses broke your deal. We re free to go! No, I m not. I m one of them, whether they accept me as one of them or not. I m going to fight for them. (calls out to the barge) Ramses! Is it true? Did you go back on your promise to me? The Pharaoh does not give promises. HOTEP NEFERTARI How dare a subject talk to his king like that! You ve broken your word. Why did you do this to me? ( rises up in anger.) To you? I m not the one who ran away, leaving his father to die in mourning for a lost son. I m not the one who left his brother alone, thinking you were dead. I m not the one who turned his back on the family who rescued him from a life of squalor. A family who loved him like one of their own. Why did you do this to me?

11 Prince of Egypt This isn t about you, Ramses. Everything is about me! I am Pharaoh! Guards, seize him! (GUARDS leap off the barge and start trudging through the shallow waters towards. The HEBREWS have noticed the commotion and approach the river.) Moses, run! MIRIAM AARON Miriam, keep out of this. We ll all be in trouble because of this mad man. (The GUARDS reach and grab him. TZIPPORAH starts running towards.) Take your hands off of my husband! TZIPPORAH You ll regret this decision, Ramses! I won t forgive you for this! ( plants his staff into the water to anchor himself against the GUARDS. The water turns red around the staff. Rapidly the red spreads, until the entire Nile has turned to the color of blood. The GUARD stops, paralyzed with fear. Everyone freezes in their tracks, disbelieving. MIRIAM puts her finger into the water and tastes it.) It s blood! MIRIAM GUARD 1 Blood! The river has turned to blood! (The GUARDS start to beat a frenzied retreat.) Guards, go back!
