The Sanctuary TYPE ANTI-TYPE TYPE

I hope you will enjoy this presentation of The Sanctuary: TYPE / ANTI-TYPE. TYPE. The whole Bible was written for our admonition, Christ is the Logos, and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.

He is the Veil (Door) to the Throne of God. It is through Him symbolically that every phase of type had been met. His life and death (Antitype) fulfilled all the requirements of Type.

My friend, He is our living and eternal Sanctuary.

God s s Ideal Sanctuary THE SANCTUARY A TYPE OR SHADOW Moses had gone up to the mount to receive the Decalogue, the Ten Commandments, which God had personally spoken to the people in the hearing of them all. (Ex. 20:1-17) 17) Here he was with the Lord forty days and forty nights. (Ex. 24:18)

Speak to the children of Israel, that they bring Me an offering: of every man that giveth it willing with his heart ye shall take My offering.... And let them make Me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them.

According to all that I show thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so shall ye make it. (Ex. 25:2-9)

And look that thou made them after their pattern, which was shewed thee in the mount. (Ex. 25:40)

While in the presence of God, to Moses was revealed all these plans of God concerning the building of the sanctuary, and its appurtenances. One thing is very remarkable about these commands of the Lord to Moses in the construction of this sacred edifice.

This is, everything was to be made after a pattern.. (Num. 8:4) It will be noticed in the scriptures quoted that God specifically points out to His servant Moses, that everything must be made according to this pattern.

What was true of the sanctuary erected by the command of Moses, was equally true of the one that Solomon built. David, after recovering the ark from the Philistines, had a great desire to build a permanent residence for the Ark of God.

Even though God would not allow David to build His sanct- uary, God did, in His great love for David, reveal His plans for the sanctuary.

Then David gave to Solomon his son the pattern of the porch, and of the houses thereof, and of the upper chambers thereof, and of the inner parlors thereof, and of the place of the mercy-seat,

and the pattern of all that he had by the spirit, of the courts of the house of the Lord. All this, said David, the Lord made me under- stand in writing by His hand upon me, even all the works of this pattern. 1 Chron. 28:

Further evidence that there is a temple in heaven, with an ark in it, and the law deposited in this ark are seen in the book of Revelation. John s s taken there in spirit. Let s s look at his inspired comments:

And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament. Rev. 11:19

And after that I looked, and behold, the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in Heaven was opened: Rev. 15:5

And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God, and from His power; and no man was able to enter into the temple, till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled. Rev.15:8

Approaching the Most Holy Place

The Ark of the Covenant. The first article of furniture which was commanded to be made.

It was made of shittim-wood, the acacia of the East. The chest was overlaid within and without with pure gold. A very beautiful crown adorned its top, and in its four corners were rings of pure gold, in which were placed the staves made of the same wood, covered with gold and used to carry the ark.

The Ark Dimensions

The next article made was the mercy-seat: And thou shalt make a mercy seat [of] pure gold: two cubits and a half [shall be] the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof. (Ex.25:17)

At each end of this mercy- seat Moses was commanded to make cherubim. (Ex. 25:18-20) 20)

When this was completed, God would make the place on the mercy-seat between these cherubim, a sacred one, and would sanctify it with His personal presence.

And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim's which [are] upon the ark of the testimony, of all [things] which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel. Ex.25:22.

This position on the mercy seat would represent the throne of God to the people. Whenever God wished to meet the people to give them commandments, or for any other reason He desired to speak with them, the glory of the Lord, the Holy Shekinah, would be manifested at this place between the two cherubim.

THE HEAVENLY CHERUBIM AND MERCY SEAT (ANTI-TYPE) TYPE) As with the ark and the law, so with the cherubim and the mercy seat. The real cherubim and mercy seat, the antitypes of the earthly, were in the temple of God in heaven; for there the real throne of God is established. There He has the seat and center of His government.

We can read concerning these truths from the following scriptures: The Lord is in His holy temple, the Lord s s throne is in heaven. Ps.11:4 Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel.... Thou that dwellest between the cherubim, shine forth. Ps. 80:1

The Lord reigneth; let the people tremble: He sitteth between the cherubim; let the earth be moved. Ps.99:1 The Lord hath prepared His throne in heavens; and His kingdom ruleth over all. Ps.103:19

And Hezekiah prayed unto the Lord, saying, O Lord of hosts, God of Israel, that dwellest between the cherubim, Thou art the God, even Thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: Thou hast made heaven and earth. Isa. 37:15,16

The Ten Commandments and the Ark

And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony [were] in his hand: the tables [were] written on both their sides; ; on the one side and on the other [were] they written.

And the tables [were] the work of God, and the writing [was] the writing of God, graven upon the tables. Ex. 32:15,16

In the ark was to be placed the testimony which God would give Moses. Ex. 25:16, And thou shalt put into the ark the testimony which I shall give thee. What this testimony was, might be of interest to discover, for there is much importance attached to this fact.

We find that The Testimony referred to, which was placed in the ark, was the Ten Commandments. The word testimony is from the Hebrew word,"עדוּת a-dus, a meaning evidence, proof, witness.

Therefore, the Decalogue, the Ten Commandments, the Law of God, was ever to be to the people, God s great evidence, proof, or witness. witness.

The Old Testament records three times the words Ten Command- ments : : Ex. 34:28, Deut. 4:13, and Deut. 10:4. It was to testify who the true God is; it was to be proof of His mighty power; it was to be an evidence of His authority as the only, true God.

You can read in Psalm 40, the following prophecy: Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.

Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book [it is] written of me, I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law [is] within my heart. Vs

Whom this prophecy refers to is explained by the Apostle Paul: Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: In burnt offerings and [sacrifices] for sin thou hast had no pleasure.

Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God. Hebrews 10:5-7

Was not His heart a safe and secure place for the law of God to abide? Did He not prove to the world who the true God was?

Christ once said: And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. John 17:3.

Was not His life a living witness as to who the true and living God was, and of His character? Oh, precious Ark of Safety! In Him is a sure and blessed Ark of Rest and Security! Psalm 144:2

My friend, God could place His law in that heart, for He knew it was safe. 1. It would never be betrayed. 2. It would never be forsaken. 3. It would never be misrepresented. 4. It would always be preserved.

Lets take a moment and do a comparison in scripture of the Law of God and His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ.

What Christ did with God s law, is what He will do in every soul who will trust Him. His heart sighed and cried for them, that He might shelter them in the bosom of His heart.

O O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, [thou] that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee,

Matt. 23:37

How He longed to free them from all their burdens of traditionalism, form, and servitude; but no, they would not receive Him!

The Ceremonial Laws and the Ark

The Ceremonial Laws We have looked in detail at the Ten Commandments. God spoke them and then wrote them with His own finger, on two tables of stone, enduring and unchanging. God gave Moses instructions that they were to sacredly reside, preserved inside the ark, under the mercy seat.

Now let us look at what the ceremonial laws pertain to, and where its location was to be. This was written by Moses, as dictated by Christ. Point one, it was written by Moses in a book.

Point two, we can see that, being in a book, it was not permanent. Point three, what was its purpose? They were the typical system of sacrifices and offerings established that through these services the sinner might discern the great offering, Christ.

We can see that the ceremonial system was made up of many symbols pointing to Christ, to His sacrifice and His priesthood.

This ritual law, with its sacrifices and ordinances, was to be preformed by the Hebrews until type met anti- type in the death of Christ, the Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world.

Then, all the sacrificial offerings were to cease. My friend, this was the law that Christ took...out of the way, nailing it to the cross. Col. 2:14

Let s s look at Col. 2:14 in detail Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

Now, go with me to Deut. 31:24, 26 and let the Bible interpret itself. You will see who wrote it, where it was located, and that it was against them.

Deut. 31:24, 26; And it came to pass, when Moses had made an end of writing the words of this law in a book,, until they were finished,... Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee.

Please note the next two slides, they plainly illustrate Col. 2:16,17. All of these feasts were considered holy days, and they were called sabbaths. But they were different from the weekly Sabbath, they had a special purpose.

Every seven years some of them fell on Sabbath (Saturday) in the weekly cycle. This was called a High Sabbath day. An example of this, the Passover Feast the year Christ died. (John 19:31)

The Meaning of the Ark

What lesson was to be taught by the Ark of the Covenant and its contents? It is well known that an ark had been used at different periods in the history of this world prior to this time.

When the Lord was to bring a deluge upon the world, He commanded Noah to build Him an ark for the saving of himself and his house.

The flood took them away

When Moses was born, and it was expected he would be drowned according to the command of Pharaoh, his mother secured an ark, and hid him therein. Exodus 2:3

In this ark he was afterward discovered by the Egyptian Princess, and his life was saved. Thus, we learn that the ark was a symbol of protection, safety, care,, and preservation.

The next article of furniture we have a record of is the table of shewbread. (Ex. 25:23-30) 30)

This table was made of the same kind of wood as was the ark, and was covered with gold as well. A border around it was also made, and a crown of pure gold. At each of the four corners of the table a ring was made of pure gold for the golden covered staves, by which it was to be borne from place to place.

The Table of Shewbread

There were various dishes required to furnish this table, the spoons, bowls, and covers were all made of pure gold. No alloy, no admixture of any kind.

We can see there must have been something very significant about the purity of all these objects because of the precision which was demanded by the Lord in their making.

THE BREAD OF THE PRESENCE Upon the table was to be placed the shewbread. The words in Hebrew, Le-hem Ha-poim, means bread of the presence, instead of shewbread, as we have it translated.

The directions for making this bread were given by the Lord, even the exact amount necessary for baking the loaves. Just so many loaves were to be baked each time; no more, no less. The twelve loaves were to be renewed every week, and to be placed upon the table in two stacks, six in a stack.

On the Sabbath day the bread was to be brought in fresh, and to be eaten only by Aaron and his sons. It must also be eaten in the Holy Place. It must not be eaten outside of the sanctuary. The table was never to be empty; it must always be supplied with the twelve loaves, and was designed to be as a memorial. Lev. 24:5-8

The Practical Application of the Bread The bread here represents Christ who is the Bread of Life with which He feeds the people. The reason it is called the bread of presence is because it is He who always is in presence of God.

For the bread of God is He which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world... I am the Bread of Life. John 6:33, 35 I I am the Living Bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live forever. John 6:51

This the Jews ought to have known; for the priests and rulers acknowledged that the Messiah was to come from Bethlehem. Micah 5:2 The Hebrew word; בּית לחם bayth leh -khem, or Bethlehem, means House of Bread.

אפרתה אפרת 'ephra^th 'ephra^tha^h ef-rawth', ef-raw' raw'-thaw From H6509; fruitfulness; Ephrath, another name for Bethlehem; once used in Psalm 132:6 perhaps for Ephraim; ; also of an Israelitish woman: Ephrath, Ephratah.

But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, [though] thou be little among the thousands of Judah, [yet] out of thee shall he come forth unto me [that is] to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth [have been] from of old, from everlasting. Micah 5:2

Therefore the prophet predicted that the Messiah was to come from a place known as the house of bread because He was to be as a Shepherd, who should feed the people. See Matt. 2:6, margin.

The Lesson of the Twelve Loaves Beautiful thoughts too are suggested in the manner the loaves were placed on the table and the purity of the dishes to be used in the serving of the bread. Nothing must come in contact with the food served on the table which had any adulteration or defilement. Everything must be without mixture.

The fact that there were but twelve loaves suggests the twelve tribes which the Lord separated for Himself, for whom He labored, whom He came to save. (Acts 26:7)

Not only the twelve tribes in the flesh who were instantly serving God are intended, but the twelve complete tribes of Israel were included also. (Gal. 6:16) (Deut. 32:8, 9)

What of the twelve apostles? Was that a coincidence? I think Not. I believe they were part of His new and better way. He told us that He was the Chief cornerstone.

I believe they were to be the nucleus of His new Spiritual Israel, (His Church) to teach others what He had taught them. Were they not commissioned in serving the Bread (Christ)? Is it not our commission also?

Every true child of God He carries upon His soul; and with Him these twelve spiritual tribes shall ever rejoice when they go no more out forever from the Father s s presence. (Rev. 7:4; 14:1-5)

My friend, the true Israel are those who are born of the Holy Spirit. (Rom. 9:6-8) Those who are redeemed by His blood; who are saved through His precious salvation. For them He gave His life, upon which they might feed. (John 6:54, 55, 63)

The Candle Sticks

One other beautiful article of furniture was the seven-branched golden candlestick. (Ex. 25:31-39) 39) Made of one piece of pure gold, with its knops, its bowls, it branches, its glittering shaft, all very delicately and cunningly inwrought with figures and flowers.

What a beautiful appearance it must have presented when lighted by the high priest. When completed it weighed nearly two hundred pounds. It was almost five feet high, and nearly three and a half feet wide.

Special oil was necessary for its use. (Ex. 27:20) It was to be lighted every evening by the priest at the time of the burning of the incense. (Ex. 30:8)

The object of the candlestick was to give light. It must be lighted every day; have a constant supply of oil, it must have its wicks trimmed each morning; and great care must always be taken, that it might never become useless.

Christ The Light Bearer How naturally this suggests to us Christ, the Light-bearer to the world. (John 8:12) He came to give light.

The oil of divine grace was constantly replenishing in His soul, and He was ever careful to have the light of His life free from everything impure and defiling. (John 8:46)

Yes, the Messiah as the light- giver, was very vividly and forcibly taught by this seven- branched golden candlestick.

An important lesson from this candlestick is taught by the apostle John, when Christ had revealed to him the antitypical candlestick in heaven, of which the one on earth was but a shadow.

And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks; And in the midst of the seven candlesticks [one] like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle. (Rev.1:12,13)

Thus, when John saw the seven golden candlesticks in heaven; the Savior said they were illustrative of the Seven Churches. But what is the mission of the church? When Christ was on Earth, He said He was the light of the world. When He was to leave, He told the church that it was to be the light of the world. (Matt. 5:14)

Jesus Christ is the Light-bearer to the world, to every individual soul that will come; His oil of grace, the Divine Spirit,, is needed to feed the light; His blessed and precious Word only,, will do the trimming. (Heb. 4:12) This thought is brought out in the parable of the ten virgins. (Matt. 25:1-10) 10)

The Altar of Incense

The Golden Altar Still another interesting article of furniture in the Sanctuary was the altar of incense. (Ex. 30:1)

This too was made of shittim-wood, the top and sides being covered with pure gold. It also had a crown of gold, and rings were made at its corners for transportation. It was about three feet high, one and a half feet long, and about the same measurement in width.

The object of the altar was to burn the sweet incense therein every morning and evening.

A special compound was prepared which was burned each time, morning and evening, giving out a very sweet and fragrant perfume. (Ex. 30:34, 35) It consisted of equal parts of stacte, onycha, galbanum, and frankincense.

In the vision that John was given in Revelation, he tells us of a very beautiful golden altar he saw in Heaven. Let s s read his description in Revelation 8:2-4; 9:13.

And I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets.

And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer [it] with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne.

And the smoke of the incense, [which came] with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel's hand.

And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God. Revelation 9:13

In heaven, right by the throne of God, stands a golden altar, the true altar of which the earthly was a type. This incense, however, was added to the prayers of the saints of God, as they were offered up by an angel.

We are told that the Spirit makes intercession for us with groanings which can not be uttered; and then our petitions before God are made acceptable by their presentation through the Spirit.

How God Accepts Prayer What a beautiful truth this altar was designed to teach, as sweet incense, amid the volumes of smoke, ascended heavenward, giving off its rich perfume and delightful fragrance.

The Lord would have His children learn, by the altar of incense, that through the precious merit of Jesus Christ, your prayers deposited in that most blessed Spirit of God, would also ascend to God amid the impediments and stammering of imperfect human language from the lips of a man.

The Vail of Separation

The Vail of Separation Just in front of the Ark, the Lord commanded Moses to hang a very beautiful curtain, made of blue, purple, scarlet, and fine- twined linen, to be designed with embroidered figures of Cherubim. Ex. 26:31, 32

This was to form a partition for two places, called respectively the Holy Place, and the Most Holy Place. Ex. 26:33

Into the Most Holy Place no soul was permitted to enter at any time on pain of death, except the High Priest, and him only on the Day of Atonement or (Yom Kippur), Tishri (Oct.) 10th. Lev. 16:2

Even then he must be clothed with special garments, and must pass through a process of purification. Lev. 16:3, 4

Heavenly Vail: Open and Shut Door As we think of these two places in the sanctuary, and the vail or door made to separate them, we can appreciate the statement which the Revealer (Christ) gave to John in Revelation 3:7, 8.

Revelation 3:7, 8. And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith He that is holy, He that is true, He that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;

I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.

Having already seen that all the articles of the earthly sanctuary were but shadows of the heavenly, the vail or door which separated the two apartments must be a shadow or type of the same thing in the heavenly. Hebrews 9:8,24.

A Helpful Lesson From The Vail One very precious practical lesson from the vail we can indeed appre- ciate, when we remember that the way which gives us an entrance unto God, the Father, is by the Vail, which is to say, His flesh. (Heb. 10:19, 20) Yes my friend, He, Christ, is the Door. (John 10:9)

He is the Vail, and through this blessed and precious Vail, we can come before the mercy- seat into the presence of God. (Hebrews 4:15, 16)

TYPE ANTI-TYPE TYPE

Advantage To The Church To Study The Levitical Laws If the Jews could only have the veil of unbelief removed from their eyes, (2 Cor. 3:15,16; Romans 11:23.)

and see the meaning of all the sacrificial system, how perfectly and completely it was fulfilled in Jesus Christ and His ministry,

what a wonderful power and marvelous light, by the illumination of the Spirit, might be given to the world.

Then, should not the church of Christ today study these grand truths; see what is written in Moses and the law; and find out what the book of Leviticus teaches?

Repeatedly Jesus said that Moses had written of Him. (Luke 24:27, 44) His whole life and work was conta- ined in the law of Moses, as well as the books of the prophets.

There is no offering, no sacrifice, no service, no phase of the priest- hood but what all find in Him great significance, and much importance. Blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear. Matt. 13:16
