14 April 2017 Good Friday 5 PM 6:30 PM As you enter, please quietly prepare for worship Reflection My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning? Psalm 22:1 Who is this Christ, who interferes in everything? Rainer Maria Rilke, The Workman s Letter Shame tears my soul, my body many a wound; Sharp nails pierce this, but sharper that confound; Reproaches which are free, while I am bound. Was ever grief like mine? George Herbert, Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one s life for one s friends. John 15:13 Welcome Prelude 1

Call to Worship from Isaiah 53 He took up our pain and bore our suffering. He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. Hymn When I Survey The Wondrous Cross Words by Isaac Watts, Chris Tomlin; Music by Lowell Mason, Chris Tomlin When I survey the wondrous cross, On which the Prince of Glory died My richest gain, I count but loss, And pour contempt on all my pride See from his head, his hands, his feet, Sorrow and love flow mingled down Did ever such love and sorrow meet? Or thorns compose, so rich a crown [Refrain] Oh the wonderful cross, oh the wonderful cross Bids me come and die and find that I may truly live Oh the wonderful cross, oh the wonderful cross All who gather here by grace, draw near and bless your name Were the whole realm of nature mine, That were an offering far too small Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all [Refrain] Prayer of Approach Melissa Moore 2

THE HANDING OVER OF JESUS First Reading Mark 15:1-15 Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, made their plans. So they bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate. Are you the king of the Jews? asked Pilate. You have said so, Jesus replied. The chief priests accused him of many things. So again Pilate asked him, Aren t you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of. But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed. Now it was the custom at the festival to release a prisoner whom the people requested. A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising. The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did. Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews? asked Pilate, knowing it was out of self-interest that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead. What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews? Pilate asked them. Crucify him! they shouted. Why? What crime has he committed? asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, Crucify him! Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified. Meditation Musical Reflection To Make You Feel My Love Solo: Haven Sink Words and Music by Bob Dylan 3

THE CRUCIFIXION OF JESUS Second Reading Mark 15:16-32 The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. And they began to call out to him, Hail, king of the Jews! Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him. A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross. They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means the place of the skull ). Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get. It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the Jews. They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left. Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, come down from the cross and save yourself! In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. He saved others, they said, but he can t save himself! Let this Messiah, this king of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe. Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him. Meditation 4

Prayer of Confession Haven Sink Almighty God, we come before you humbly confessing our sins. Forgive us for wandering from you, neglecting to love you with all our hearts, even mocking you in our words and ways. We marvel, O Christ, that at just the right time, when we were still powerless, you died for us. Though being in very nature God, you shed yourself of glory and became obedient to death--even death on the cross. You suffered for our sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring us to God. Thank you for your saving work that rescues us and makes us whole. Give us the grace now to follow you faithfully and to adore you fervently, O lover of our soul. In Jesus name. Amen. Silent Confession Hymn Jesus What A Friend Of Sinners Words and Music by J. Wilbur Chapman Jesus! what a friend for sinners! Jesus! lover of my soul; Friends may fail me, foes assail me, he, my Savior, makes me whole. [Refrain] Hallelujah! what a Savior! Hallelujah! what a friend! Saving, helping, keeping, loving, he is with me to the end. Jesus! what a strength in weakness! Let me hide myself in him; Tempted, tried, and sometimes failing, he, my strength, my vict'ry wins. [Refrain] Jesus! what a help in sorrow! While the billows o'er me roll, Even when my heart is breaking, he, my comfort, helps my soul. [Refrain] Jesus! what a guide and keeper! While the tempest still is high, Storms about me, night o er takes me, he, my pilot, hears my cry. [Refrain] Jesus! I do now receive him, More than all in him I find, He hath granted me forgiveness, I am his, and he is mine. [Refrain] 5

THE LAST WORDS AND DEATH OF JESUS Third Reading Mark 15:33-39 At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani? (which means My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? ). When some of those standing near heard this, they said, Listen, he s calling Elijah. Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. Now leave him alone. Let s see if Elijah comes to take him down, he said. With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died, he said, Surely this man was the Son of God! Meditation Prayer for the World Blake Thomas Because you so love the world that you sent your Son to die for her, we pray to you, Lord. Through the power of your Spirit, set your creation free from its bondage to decay. You have called us to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly before you. We confess we are often indifferent to the injustice around us and allow other things to crowd your priorities out of our lives. 6

You, Lord, defend the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and love the immigrant, poor, and oppressed. Give us the compassion to do likewise and to treat everyone with the respect and dignity they deserve because they are created in your image. You have called us to be your light wherever there is darkness, a city of hope and healing in the midst of the city of Houston, and to seek the peace and welfare of this great city. Make us, O Lord, an instrument of your peace. Weave back together the fabric of this beautiful city wherever it has unraveled. Help us to see our work as a calling you have given us to love and serve you. Build culture through us that our labors might be a benefit to others and be pleasing in your sight. Help us not to be consumed by our own difficulties, but to be sensitive to those suffering around us. Pour out your compassion on those who suffer from illness, grief, financial, vocational, relational, psychological and other forms of distress. Give us the grace to care deeply for the spiritual condition of those you have placed in our life. By your mercy, help us to build a church for others, that many might experience the peace and joy of knowing you, whom to know is life eternal. 7

Musical Reflection Erbarme Dich, Mein Gott Soloist: Callie Denbigh Words and Music by J.S. Bach English Translation: Have mercy, My God, for my tears sake; Look hither, Heart and eyes weep before thee bitterly. HOLY COMMUNION The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. Prayer (followed by praying together): Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory for ever and ever. Amen Words of Institution Let us proclaim the mystery of faith. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. O Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, Have mercy upon us! O Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, Have mercy upon us! O Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, Grant us your peace! Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us. Therefore, let us keep the feast. The gifts of God are for the people of God. 8

Communion is for all those who long for strength to follow Jesus. If you choose not to receive, simply remain in your seat. If you wish to receive communion, please come forward when your row is released. Take the bread, dip into the cup and partake. The wine is closest to the bread. All bread is gluten free. Hymn Oh The Deep Deep Love Words and Music by S. Trevor Francis Oh, the deep, deep love of Jesus, vast, unmeasured, boundless, free! Rolling as a mighty ocean in its fullness over me! Underneath me, all around me, is the current of thy love - leading onward, leading homeward, to that glorious rest above! Oh, the deep, deep love of Jesus, spread his praise from shore to shore! How he loves us, ever loves us, changes never, nevermore! How he watches o'er his loved ones, died to call them all his own; how for them he's interceding, watching o'er them from the throne! Oh, the deep, deep love of Jesus, love of every love the best! 'Tis an ocean vast of blessing, 'tis a haven sweet of rest! Oh, the deep, deep love of Jesus -'tis heaven of heavens to me; and it lifts me up to glory, for it lifts me up to thee!
