2 teshuvah prepares believers FoR messiah s appearing I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet (shofar). For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 1 Cor 15:51-52 Blow the shofar at the new moon, at the covered time for our feast day. For it is a statute for Israel, an ordinance for the God of Jacob. Ps 81:3-4 Teshuvah is a Hebraic concept which means literally response or return. Repentance and renewal of faith are only one phase of teshuvah. Isaiah said: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the man of iniquity his thoughts; and let him return unto the Eternal and He will have compassion on him, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon, Isa 55:7. The turning away begins with the realization of having sinned. At times, that realization and confession of sin are enough to bring God s forgiveness. When King David confessed to the prophet Nathan, I have sinned against the Eternal One, the prophet reassures him: The Eternal hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die, 2 Sam 12:13. David demonstrated his greatness by renouncing royal dignity and pride in his confession of sin. Realization of guilt is not enough. The sinner must also forsake his way. He that covereth his transgressions shall not prosper; but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall obtain mercy, Prov 28:13. Philip Goodman states, the Talmud draws a distinction between those motivated by teshuvah me-yirah, return out of fear (of punishment), and teshuvah meahavah, return out of love (of God). Of the former, their intentional sins are accounted as if they were unintentional; of those who return out of love, their intentional transgressions become like merits. The concept is that the human personality is capable of regeneration and renewal. Thus Teshuvah is an experience of transformation. When performed out of fear, it lessens the burden of sin but does not give victory over the sin. Teshuvah undertaken out of love accomplishes a fundamental transformation, in which healing and purification are complete for the baal teshuvah, the man who returned. Revelation consummates our Father s story. It is the only Prophecy that carries a promised blessing for reading, hearing and obeying. While the prophecy addresses the Church, Israel and the nations, the Church is the first focus, portrayed by seven assemblies arching seven ecclesiastical periods. Since seven denotes spiritual completion, each Assembly plays a major role. The messages to the seven Churches given to the Apostle John are in the order a traveler would visit them and in that order each represents one historical epoch of the Church Age. While prophecies in the Seven Churches/Assemblies were written to believers of the first century, and record the history of the Church Age, they are also written to each believer today for our hearing, learning, repentance and applying. suggested guidelines FoR daily prayer times Repentance--the Focus of teshuvah PREPARATION: Paramount to Teshuvah is dependnce on the Holy Spirit to guide the leader and participants. The Prayer Guide is designed for group or individual prayer. Each Church/Assembly is presented with background to prepare for effective repentance and intercession. Prior to the daily prayer time, suggested material for that day should be read. Daily Prayer begins Day 2, Aug 16. (p. 45/46) THE SETTING: For a group setting, the leader(s) should set forth the order and guidelines deemed needful. For an open group setting, it is beneficial to review important points regularly. Corporate prayer is most effective when prayers are brief and focused on the subject. It will benefit the individual and the group if the leader sets the time frame of each session. WORSHIP: Scripture, musical selections and prayers of worship and thanksgiving. PERSONAL: Meditation, repentance and intercession may be done privately in a period of silence only, or the personal time may be followed by an open session for those who feel the need for prayers of agreement. FAMILIES: Usually prayers for family are done privately. Korean style praying can be used--the group prays simultaneously aloud for a specific focus. CHURCH: When seeking to cover large segments and focuses of the Body of Messiah/the Church, Korean style praying is effective, allowing the group to offer multiple prayers of repentance and intercession simultaneously. ISRAEL: Repenting that the church has failed to stand with Israel or honor our spiritual parents, may our repentance be accepted and our intercession effectual for Israel s leadership, all Israelis, the IDF and Israel s intelligence. Intercede for the major role Israel plays in the end times, for safety and for the LORD S Glory. U.S./NATIONS: For leadership, national and local; repenting for the abominable sins filling our nation and the nations; praying, I Tim 2:

Other epistles are written and sent in the speaker s absence. However, the seven Assemblies portray the Savior walking among His Church as Judge, engaged in a solemn act of inspection/decision. These two chapters of the Apocalypse are Messiah s very last corporate Words to His Body. J. Sidlow Baxter comments on the central truth symbolized by Messiah amid the lampstands: Surely we are meant to get a vivid, moving impression of the Christ in heaven operating through the Church on earth...equally clear is that of the Church on earth functioning for the Christ in heaven. seven signifies completion Messiah began His Church with twelve Apostles. Ephesus means desirable. It is the first of the seven Assemblies and known as the Apostolic Age. However, when John receives Revelation in 96 A.D. of the twelve he alone is left. When Messiah gave these seven messages to John, they were prophetic. Nearly 2000 years later, history affirms the seven messages and stands as a witness to the Messenger, the Messiah. H.A. Ironsides states, Seven churches were chosen because seven in Scripture is the number of perfection (completion). Dr. Henry Morris points out, The churches are arranged in a logical geographical order beginning with Ephesus, the closest to Patmos where John first heard the message; the Savior proceeds clockwise through to the seventh, Laodicea, which is the very order of the historical record of the church age. Theodore Epp writes, Each letter to a specific church describes dominant characteristics of a particular period of church history. historical setting affects the early church FatheRs at ephesus Nero was suspected of starting the great fire in Rome. To divert suspicion from himself, he accused the Christians. Thousands were put to death in the most cruel ways, among them Paul and possibly Peter, A.D. Tenth Legion under Titus, the Roman General, destroyed the Temple in Jerusalem in 70 A.D. inflicting great persecution on the Jews. Domitian in 96 A.D. instituted violent persecution against the Christians on the charge of atheism (probably refusal to participate in emperor worship). Domitian exiled the Apostle John to the isle of Patmos. Death of the Apostles Within years after the death of Christ, the Jewish Apostles had died except John whose death is not recorded; hence, leadership of the Church shifted to Gentile believers. *For Sunday 9.16, please read pages

Blessed is the one who listens to Me...Prov 8:33-34 personal preparation: John 15:4; Matthew 5:24 Our Father, I acknowledge that I do not see myself as You see me, that I fail to abide in You. Please cleanse me of sins committed against You and help me to know transgressions I have committed against others so that I can repent to them and to You. CHURCH: We confess and repent for the sins of neglecting to obey You and Your instructions expressed in Rev 1:3, neglecting to read the Book of Revelation aloud, failing to believe Your blessing is on those who obey Your Word. For believers eyes to be opened to our Savior s instruction to read Revelation aloud, privately and corporately; Pastors and Spiritual leaders to have a fresh understanding and desire to read aloud Revelation with their congregations. prayers of thanks: Thank You for hearing our prayers. Thank You for Your love for the Church, Messiah s Body. ISRAEL: Isaiah 51:1-2 Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness, you who seek the LORD: look to the rock from which you were hewn, and to the quarry from which you were dug. Look to Abraham your father and to Sarah who bore you. We confess and repent for the sin of neglecting to give honor to Abraham / Sarah and their descendants, our Spiritual Parents in the faith. prayers of praise/thanksgiving and intercession: Thank You for showing Yourself faithful through Israel. Pray the Church will awaken to the debt we owe to the Jewish people who gave us the Scriptures. NATION: Psalm 33:12 We confess and repent for the sins of neglecting Your Word and neglecting to fear and obey You. That spiritual leaders and believers hold steadfastly to truth in these treacherous days that are unfolding in our nation. We repent that most scholars treat Rev 2:4 from the position that believers at Ephesus had begun to wane in their love and devotion to Jesus/Yeshuah. However, You revealed that the Church Fathers turned from the Hebrew language. Thereby we lost understanding of Your Hebraic ways. prayers of thanks: Thank You for revealing the importance of the Historical Overlay for Ephesus that we might awaken to the true meaning of Your Rev 2:4 correction. ISRAEL: Exodus 4:22-23 Then you shall say to Pharaoh, Thus says the LORD, Israel is My firstborn son, and I say to you, Let my son go that he may serve Me. We confess/repent for failing to know that Israel is Your firstborn Son, that we would think that You would forget One so dear to Your heart. prayer of praise/thanksgiving and intercession: We praise You for calling Abraham and for Your love for Israel, Your firstborn Son. Pray the Church will see that the LORD S love for Israel is everlasting. Jer 31:2-3 NATION: Genesis 12:3 For anti-hebraism and anti-semitism regularly manifested in our nation from the highest office to college campuses. We repent for failing to fear and obey You. We pray You will awaken our national leaders to Your Word and Ways. Our Spiritual leaders and believers to be a voice of righteousness holding steadfastly to truth concerning Israel and the Jewish people in our nation. We repent that Christians fail to esteem the Jewish people who were entrusted to bring Your Word and understanding of the Hebraic writings to the nations. prayers of praise/thanksgiving and intercession: Thank you for revealing Your Ways to Hebrew scholars, Rabbis/sages. Pray more spiritual leaders/christians will see the value of studying the Hebraic writings. NATION: Galatians 6:7 We repent that anti-hebraism and anti-semitism are regularly manifested in our nation. We repent for times our nation has sought to control Israel and Your land. Pray that our political leaders might experience a spiritual awakening, that the fear of the LORD might be imparted to them. Please forgive us. prayers of thanks: Thank You for Your correction, exposing the misunderstanding of Rev 2:4, not that the Early Church Fathers love for Jesus was diminishing, but rather that they left the love they once had for Your Language, Ways and People. ISRAEL: Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit...discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. We confess and repent for the sin of anti-judaism, for Christians failing to esteem Your Hebraic language and Judaic ways given to us through Your Hebraic (Jewish) people. prayers of praise/thanksgiving and intercession: Thank You for preserving Your Hebrew language. We pray You will continue to bless Israel as You have since establishing them in their land in NATION: Ezekiel 16:49 For pride, excess food and prosperous ease, leading us to greater offenses as we turned away from Your Word and Ways (Hebraic laws). For President Obama that he might seek the LORD and be given understanding of our Father s Hebraic ways. Pagans worshiped the sun god; hence, one week day was named Sunday, setting it apart as their day of worship. Their decisions were made to disconnect believers from the Hebraic/Judaic day of worship, Shabbat, the 7th day. prayers of thanks: Our Father, thank You for bringing light and truth to the mystery of Rev 2:4, revealing the Early Church Fathers abandoned the love that the early Jewish and Gentile believers had for Your Language, Ways and People prior to their leadership. israel: Exodus 19:5-6 You shall be My treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; and you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. Rev 1:11 The words of Him who holds the seven stars in His right hand, who walks among the seven golden lampstands. Rev 2:1 If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened; but God has surely listened and heard my voice in prayer, Ps 66:18-19; Job 1:5 Praise be to God, who has not rejected my prayer or taken his love from me! Ps. 66:20 corporate Reading: Ephesians 3:14-21; Revelation 2:1-7 Oh the breadth and depth of our Father s love to extend His blessings to the Gentiles through His Hebraic connection, the Messiah. Yet, like the Early Church Fathers, we chose our ways causing a disconnect to His Hebraic Ways. personal preparation: Revelation 2:4 Our Father, since I have Your entire revealed Word to read, I confess my sins against You are greater than the Early Church Fathers who did not have personal copies of the Scriptures. I repent for failing to take responsibility for my sins. CHURCH: We repent for the sin of being casual about the Seven messages given to the Apostle John on the isle of Patmos. The messages You sent each of the seven Assemblies, You also sent to each member of Your Son s Body. Forgive us for disconnecting from Your urgent messages then and now. prayers of thanks: Our Father, thank You for revealing the depth of our disconnection with Hebraic Truths, Your Language, Ways and People. ISRAEL: Numbers 23:9 For from the top of the crags I see Him, from the hills I behold Him; behold, a people dwelling alone, and not counting itself among the nations! We confess and repent for failing to daily thank You for drawing us, the Gentiles, to be joint heirs with Israel. Please reconnect us with Israel, Your First Love. prayers of praise/thanksgiving and intercession: Our Father, thank you for our heritage. We ask that You will awaken our Spiritual leaders to Your Hebraic Ways and reconnect the Church to our Spiritual Parentage, Abraham, the Father of the circumcised and the uncircumcised, Rom 4:9-12. Our Father, we acknowledge and repent for the Church being one of the greatest offenders propagating As members of the Church, we acknowledge, denounce and repent of all forms of anti-hebraism / anti-semitism wherever we the Church have initiated or spread lies and committed vile acts against the Jewish people in our past history or at this present time. As we NATION: Jeremiah 18:9 For the deception that we Americans made this nation great. In our pride we are failing to see You as the One that lifts up and brings down. For a spiritual awakening across America causing believers to wake up to our spiritual state that we are poor, wretched, blind and naked. Smyrna, the second Assembly means myrrh. Myrrh had to be crushed to emit its fragrance. Smyrna, the suffering Church, is titled the Persecution Age. This epoch was a time when many believers were experiencing martyrdom under Domitian s cruelties. Messiah reveals Himself as the One Who is the First and the Last, which identifies Him with the Father s Eternality stated in Rev 1:8. He encourages these suffering believers with words of Hope, that He was dead but now Alive. As the Smyrna believers faced possible death, they had His Words of encouragement to reinforce their commitment. the applications of the seven letters, complete and personal 1) The letters were written to seven Church Assemblies of believers located at Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea. 2) They are for every believer from Pentecost, to the close of the Church Age. 3) They are prophetic of the seven periods that foreshadow the entire Church Age. The distinct manner in which the Savior reveals Himself to each Assembly fits the spiritual and mental needs of that congregation. Each of the seven is written as a personal message, sealed and stamped. They are our Savior s last Words and command our attention. Seven times He entreats His Body to hear His message. In his book, Revelation, Dr. Charles Ryrie states, These (seven) churches were representative of all churches at that time, as well as those of subsequent generations. The letters to the Corinthians, though written to the church at Corinth, concern the church everywhere and at all times, 1 Cor 1:2. Rev 2:12 pergamum the imperial age REPENTANCE FOR THE SINS OF THE CHURCH pergamum: begins day 13, thursday, aug 27 - day 19, wednesday, sept 2 Rev 2:4 correction continued FoRwaRd to pergamum. pergamum, the church of imperial power Pergamum has two meanings: marriage and elevation. It speaks of the time when the church was elevated to a place of power and married to the world. Through Satan s seductive plan, the Pergamum era is known as the Imperial Age when the church and state were united under Constantine and his successors. When John experienced the amazing encounter and was given Revelation, the believers were a persecuted remnant in the mass of humanity. Satan s power play at Pergamum turned this remnant of believers, now called Christians, into the religion of Rome. With one stroke of the pen Christianity became yoked with the Roman state executing great power and authority over mankind but Satan s particular interest was centered in the persecution and ostracism of the Jews. pergamum, the seat of satan s throne Pergamum was where Satan s seat (literally throne) was located. Some scholars feel this may have been an expression used to refer to the gigantic temple of Zeus at Pergamum. Others think that it more likely refers to the fact that Pergamum was probably the greatest center of pagan religion in the world at that time. Dr. Henry Morris in his book, The Revelation Record summarizes insights from Alexander Hislop s famous book Two Babylons. He states, Hislop gives documentation to show that Pergamum had inherited the religious mantle of ancient Babylon when Babylon fell in the days of Belshazzar. The priests, who had kept the secrets of the ancient mystery religions centered at Babylon ever since the days of Nimrod, were forced to migrate at that time, transferring what amounted to the headquarters of Satan s religious system away from Babylon north and west of Pergamum where it endured for several centuries in that great center of evolutionary pantheistic paganism. Still later it moved to Rome. If Hislop s analysis is correct, Satan s throne becomes a very literal description of the invisible principalities and powers centered at Pergamos. messiah the two-edged sword Messiah is revealed as a two-edged sword which is the symbol of the Word of the Lord, the assurance of judgment on the basis of absolute truth. He rebuked Pergamum for holding to the teachings of the Nicolaitans, control over the people and Balaam, a prophet for gain and an anti-semite. Balaam sought to entice Israel to commit sins of sexual immorality and idolatry so Israel would come under divine judgment. In the Pergamum period, Christianity was forced upon society, hence the Church was filled with pagan worshippers who brought with them their pagan thoughts and ways. Thyatira means continual sacrifice. H.A. Ironsides states, The great fundamental error of the church of Rome--the sacrifice of the Mass. The Roman Catholic priests declare that, in the Mass, they offer a continual sacrifice for the sins of the living and the dead...it is a denial of the finished work of the Lord Jesus on Calvary s Cross--the one, only, and all-sufficient offering for the sins of a guilty world. In the seventh century, the Bishop of Rome was first regularly recognized as Christ s vicegerent and the visible head of the church. Thyatira is the longest of the seven letters and is the longest of the seven Church periods, A.D. The Catholic Church takes the reigns of leadership over the Church and is responsible for the most severe persecutions of the Jewish people equaled only by Hitler s final solution. Thyatira was the age of the Crusades, the expulsion of Jews from France, Spain, Germany and Austria and the Spanish Inquisition. Hundreds of thousands of Jews were slain during these dark years of Thyatira. The Lord commends Thyatira for their love, faith, service and perservance, that were better at the end than earlier. However, He comes with eyes as a flame of fire and burnished feet like bronze to indict and judge the Jezebel spirit. The Jewish people faced forced conversions, baptisms, humiliating ridicule such as wearing visible badges to single them out as a rejected people. The ghetto was first instituted by the Church. They faced death and expulsion at the hands of Church leaders, the Crusaders and Inquisitors. Preaching and teaching brought emphasis on the Blessed Hope, the premillennial return of the Lord. Church members began to respond; revival and new life emerged out of the dead orthodoxy of Sardis. new life experienced The literal interpretation of Scripture and teaching on the imminent return of the Lord naturally illuminated the prophecies and the important role Israel has in the Biblical text. These vital subjects coming to the forefront ignited a worldwide move of the Spirit. Men with great vision and conviction took center stage: George Whitefield, John Wesley, Jonathan Edwards and later, D.L. Moody, John Nelson Darby and Charles Spurgeon. As the Spirit sent these chosen ones forth, revivals swept the continent and spread virtually throughout the world. As a result during this time the great missionary movements were born and powerful missionary societies were formed. The missionary fire broke out through men like David Livingston, Hudson Taylor, David Brainerd, William Carey, Jonathan Goforth. Before this movement a remnant had carried out missionary work, primarily accomplished through the Moravians. Though they were secure materially, they were actually dependent and in need of fresh water. Their water came from two sources. One source supplied icy cold water, the other very hot. However, by the time they each reached Laodicea through the stone-walled pipes, both were lukewarm. As prophetically revealed to the Apostle John, the condition of the Church at the close of the Laodicean Age will be lukewarm. The people in the Church will be instituting their own ways, ruling and determining right and wrong. As our Savior so faithfully spoke, commending and correcting the other six Assemblies, so He speaks forthrightly to us, the Church of the Laodicean Age.
