1 Book of Psalms Psalm 26 Passing the Integrity Test Another title for this psalm would be Doing Right When You Have Been Done Wrong. One of the most difficult things in life is to endure the attacks and false charges of your enemies. Jesus said, Matthew 5: Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. 12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. When people say false things about you, what should you do? Rest with a clear conscience. Rejoice that God will eventually reward you and remember that God will have the final word. A clear conscience makes the softest pillow. The historical background for Psalm may be the time of Absalom s rebellion. David wanted God to vindicate or clear him from the false charges of his enemies. One common theme in all three psalms is the focus on public worship. David mentions the house of the Lord in these psalms because worship was very important to him. 1. Vindication (vs. 1) David asks God to establish his innocence. David has walked in his integrity and he prays that God would acknowledge that. Judge me means vindicate me or declare me innocent. Integrity doesn t mean that David was sinless. His life was blameless, not perfect. He claims to be innocent of the charges his enemies made against him. When David said, I shall not slide, he means that he trusts God without wavering. The Hebrew word means to slip, slide, totter, or shake. In spite of how he was mistreated, David was going to trust the Lord so he would not lose his spiritual footing. 2. Examination (vs. 2-5) David invites God to search and test him. This prayer for God to examine his life is a bold request. How many of us are willing to pray like this? Psalms 139: Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: 24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. David asked God to examine his heart and mind. He knew that God could see what no one else could see. Jeremiah 17: The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? 10 I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings. Three different words are found in verse 2. The first one, bahchan, means to examine, prove, scrutinize, make a thorough examination. The second word, nahsah, menas to test, try, prove, make an intensive test. The third word, tzahraff, means to refine, smelt, test. Twenty-two out of the thirty-two times it is found in the Old Testament, it has to do with refining gold or silver, removing the impurities and dross. David invites the Lord to make a thorough search, an in-depth examination of his inner being (heart and mind), and to melt and refine all the impurities out of his life. David is confident that God will find him innocent for these reasons: A. He focused on the Lord s covenant love He looks at his circumstances through the lens of God s love. B. He walked in God s truth David followed the truths of God s Word to guide him through the maze of life. God s children are to walk (live) in truth. It is not

2 enough to know the truth. We must practice it. 3 John 4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth. C. He refused to run with the wrong crowd David refers to vain men (vs. 4, idolaters), and dissemblers (hypocrites). He mentions the congregation of evil doers and the wicked (vs. 5). He speaks of sinners and bloody men (vs. 9, bloodthirsty men). You can always find people who will encourage you to get mad, get even, and take matters into your own hands. David proved his integrity by separation from these kinds of people. Psalms 1:1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. 2 Corinthians 6:17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you. 1 Corinthians 15:33 Be not deceived: evil communications (companions) corrupt good manners. 3. Determination (vs. 6-8) While David separated himself from sinners, he loved to gather with other believers for worship. David prepared himself to worship God with a clean conscience. David loved to worship and therefore he loved the sanctuary. Can you honestly say that you love the house of the Lord? Psalms 122:1 I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD. A. He desires to have spiritual purity Clean hands means a clean conscience. We wash our bodies before we come to church, but do we cleanse our hearts? 2 Corinthians 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. The word picture David used was familiar to the Jews (Exodus 30:17-21). The bronze laver or washbasin was used by the priests to wash before they approached the altar to minister and offer sacrifices. If they failed to wash, the Lord would kill them. B. He desires to offer specific praise He has so much to be thankful for. David didn t know the song, Count Your Blessings, but he agreed with it. This hymn was written by Johnson Oatman, Jr., and was first published in a hymnbook in He began writing hymns in 1892 and averaged 200 songs a year and 5,000 during his lifetime. Among them are Higher Ground, No, Not One, and The Last Mile of the Way. It is impossible to be thankful and complaining at the same time. Are you humbly grateful or grumbly hateful? In his book, Table Talk, Martin Luther wrote, The greater God s gifts and works, the less they are regarded. In other words, we tend to appreciate God s blessings in reverse proportion to how many we have. A starving man is more thankful for his morsel of food than a rich man with his banquet table of rich food. If the birds only sang once a year, we would all pay close attention. But because they are singing every morning, we don t even bother to listen. As we think of that, it seems even more remarkable that David was deeply grateful because he had so many blessings as the king of Israel and could easily have taken them for granted. C. He desires to enter the sacred place This was God s home on earth, a true sanctuary that was set apart for Him. David was determined to worship. For him it was not a ritual or a habit, but a passion and a priority. Psalms 27:4 One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple. Psalms 65:4 Blessed is the man whom thou choosest, and causest to

3 approach unto thee, that he may dwell in thy courts: we shall be satisfied with the goodness of thy house, even of thy holy temple. Psalms 84:10 For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness. Worship must be a priority of every Christian and every church (see Heb. 10:23-25). 4. Redemption (vs. 9-11) David asks God to show him mercy instead of punishment. He asks God to redeem (Heb., pada, rescue, deliver) him from trouble. The Hebrew word was often used to refer to Israel s deliverance from Egypt. 5. Confirmation (vs. 12) The last verse of this psalm is a statement of confidence and a vow of praise. David is confident that God will allow him to stand against the enemy. The term an even place comes from the Hebrew, meeshore, which means level or plain country. It carries the idea of a place that has a broad view rather than a low place in a deep gorge. David said that he could see his life and problems from a clear perspective, even from God s perspective. He saw things from God s point of view. LASTING LESSONS: Live with integrity so that you have a clear conscience Maintain your integrity at all times and at all costs. Trust God to honor and reward your integrity. Living a life of integrity is a must. Would you be willing to ask the Lord to examine your life thoroughly? Are your public life and your personal life consistent? What changes do you need to make so that you can have real integrity?
