Luckily, th 2012 Nw Hampshir Jwish Film Fstival is coming to town March 17-25, just in tim to hlp us ushr in spring. Th Fstival kicks off with th Opning Night Gala at th Currir Musum on March 17 and continus with scrnings at svral wondrful vnus throughout th stat. Anti-Smitism in Nw Hampshir? Rcntly I was laving th wondrful Dli Night hld by th Tmpl Adath Yshurun Brothrhood, and I was gt- K. At first, I thought that it was a snowball. It was wt and dripping. It was thrown from a moving car. It turnd out to b an gg. What a surpris. I calld th polic, not with any hop, but to alrt thm in cas thr ar additional incidnts of this typ. Thy said it was probably kids. Thy wr probably right...but thr is mor to th story. It turns out that th Fdration has bn ggd bfor. and thr hav bn othr incidnts. Last yar, a small swastika was found on th Fdration front stps. I also hard about a swastika that was paintd on a Manchstr city strt. Anothr was found on a park bnch in th Laks rgion. Also last yar, a Jwish collg studnt s room was vandalizd. Jwish itms in his dorm room wr dfacd or dstroyd. In ach cas, authoritis suggstd that it was just kids. Mayb it was, but that dos not disprov th xistnc of anti-smitism in Nw Hampshir. W hav sn clarly anti-smitic rants in Nw Hampshir nwspaprs. But of gratr concrn is what is said to our childrn. Rcntly, I hard about a Hbrw class whr studnts would hid thir Jwish idntity from public school classmats bcaus of fars of harassmnt. This concrns m dply. If young popl fl th nd to concal thir Jwishnss, what dos this man for thir futur idntity as Jws? Nationally, w har that anti-isral sntimnts ar oftn thinly disguisd anti-smitism. Thr hav bn svral incidnts whr politicians and clbritis around th world blam Isral for all of th problms in th Middl East. Clarly this is inaccurat and short sightd. What happns if things gt wors? Throughout history, Jws hav bn scapgoatd for th world s problms, and virulnt anti-smitism has bn th rsult. Today, Jws can stay in hotls, doctors can join mdical staffs, and bing Jwish dos not appar to b a barrir to mploymnt. Th troubling issu of a nuclar Iran lads to possibl scnarios that could mak anti-smitism much wors. If Iran follows through on thrats to clos th Straits of Hormuz, will Jws b blamd, with incrasd anti-smitism to follow? If Amricans ar attackd by Moslm trrorists, will Isral and th Jws b blamd? W nd to b awar that anti-smitism has bn with us through much of our history. I hop that w do not s it in Nw Hampshir, but if it occurs, I hop that th Fdration is notifid. W will continu to monitor and rspond. W hostd Ziva Kainr, an artist from Hof Hacarml who visitd Nw Hampshir in 2009, for a Shabbat dinnr. Sh told Linda that sh was mor than wlcom to us hr studio whn w visitd.
